I am happy to post this review since August is National Black Business Month, a time to celebrate and support Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in the United States. Good food is found at Jay Birds Bar & Grille located in Lathrup Village! So much so I dined here twice in one month with two different parties. Ironically, Brianna was our server both times. It's time to give her a raise for her hard work in serving. I had the catfish fillets, green beans and garlic mashed potatoes on my first visit and fried chicken wings and fries on the second visit. The food was well prepared with portions for sharing or a second meal at home. Note: Due to their limited seating, there is a 90-minute seating limit during busy times. Seating includes bar seating, pub tables and booth. Seating is not ideal for parties larger than 4. On my second visit, we had a party of 7 that we settled for two booths. read more

Service was top tier. Our server took great care of us. There wasn't space inside for our party size so thankfully the weather was perfect to sit on their outside patio. Until someone at the table next to us lit a joint, we truly enjoyed the outdoor space. My brother, however, warned me that the food was just meh and I find I will have to agree with him. The protein/meats were good. My problem was with the sides. I got the rice pilaf and green beans and I feel like it was false advertisement. The rice pilaf was just yellow rice. The green beans were canned, although the menu pic showed fresh. Both of them lacked flare or seasoning. I noticed the person we ate with ate all of his catfish but barely touched his sides (potatoes au gratin and corn) as well. Now my husband got the mashed potatoes and brussels. He raved about them. I grabbed a little of both to take home so hoping when I eat them for lunch tomorrow I'm as impressed with those as he was. Maybe they are the show stoppers?!? So the final factor is always whether or not it would return and I will say yes, there were several cocktails on the menu I really want to try. And it is conveniently located. I was in the mood for some good food, a nice martini in a nice chill atomsphere and this spot did not disappoint! Came here on a Thursday evening, sadly we just missed Happy Hour but the prices were still very afforable. Me and my husband sat the bar and was greeted by Shonnie(not sure if that's correct but I know she said she is only there on Thursday and maybe Monday and another day) any who she was very nice and she made our drinks perfect. My husband had a Green Tea and a had a Lemon Drop and both were very good. Once looking at the menu we had a hard time deciding on what to get because as we sat and watched other people food come out and when I say everything looked so good!!! Well we decided on the keeping it simple and I got the whole wings with a side of green beans and my husband got the Black Jack Burger with a side of fries. My wings were probably the best wings that I have had in a long time, they were cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. The green beans had a taste that just gabe my mouth the best feeling ever!! My husband's burger was real ground meat and was so juicy and tasty, the fries was very good, not cut too thick but cut to a good size so they cooked just right. My sisters and I were at a nearby cemetery tending to our brother's resting place. When done, and per usual, I looked on Yelp to find a place nearby to have a good meal. We decided to give Jay Birds a try. It was a pleasant experience from start to finish. A handsome young man, who goes by "Que" (uncertain of the spelling), sat us as soon as we entered the well lit, quaint and quiet establishment. The Detroit Pistons were playing on huge TV's; volume low so guest can enjoy the old schools tunes softly playing overhead. The food was delicious. I had a Philly steak served in a soft wheat bun and scrumptious fried Brussel sprouts. I also had a side of sweet corn that took me back to my Aunt Mandy's kitchen near Tupelo, MS. Oh, so good. My sis Sue had whole bbq wings. The sauce was like "neighborhood" sauce; not from a jar. Sis Brenda had the Jay Bird grilled chicken salad which she enjoyed and ate every single bit of it. We had non-alcohol drinks today, so cannot comment on the bar, but I'll return soon with my daughters. They enjoy a good cocktail now and then. Our server was new so he did good for us being his 1st table at the restaurant. The food was ok. My fish was seasoned a little too much and my mashed potatoes were stiff, not creamy. My friend said her salad wasn't bad. The wings were actually pretty good. Might just stick to appetizers if I go back. We went on a Sunday evening not knowing they were hosting an event for the Lions game that evening. When we got our bills we were charged a surcharge for the game without being notified there was an additional fee. We were in and out before the game even started. It was refreshing to see the owner present and engaging, often times that doesn't happen in restaurants. read more

A warm welcome and friendly service at the large bar, thanks Yolinda!. By chance the owners were on site too! Mrs. Jay Bird is personable and professional, with a sweet spirit. Atmosphere was perfect during Happy Hour, comfortable and good music. Food: Grilled Spicy Shrimp was excellent, I loved the sauce. Lemon Drop Martini was perfectly made, not too sour and Wing Dings Asian Ginger was very tasty with a perfect hit of sweet and spicy. Overall A+ and a 10 out of 10. I discovered this restaurant one morning while watching Fox 2 on my day off. With no plans for the day, I thought, why not check it out? I've already been here twice in one week! The service is superb, and the staff are incredibly friendly and leave a great impression. So far, I've tried the wings, turkey burgers, fries, salads, sidecars, and French 75s--not all in one visit, of course! The food is fantastic, and the drinks are just as impressive. Trying to support a Black Business. The crowd was nice. We were seated immediately, only to be moved to a very uncomfortable seat!!!!! We were told that the seats we were in, were reserved.() We ordered chicken only to be told that they were out of chicken at 6pm There was a booth behind us that was empty, yet we were moved to another booth. The playlist was cool! Our food was just okay. My husband had a burger (asked for medium, got well done) We were asked if we wanted drink refills, and told to pass our empty glasses to be refilled! This place was not busy on Wed, July 2, yet we waited 30 mins, and did not get the drinks we ordered, an opportunity to order food, and we had to search for the waitress to get water for two of the three in our party. We found Jay Birds while in town for a volleyball tournament this past weekend. The food was great, especially the salmon sliders and the beer battered fries!!
