For those is us that have a long history of ordering, what I call: traditional Cantonese Chinese food take-out in NYC & larger metro NYS area, this restaurant is exceptional. True to that same flavor that is so common and consistent and of course: delicious. Jay Heun is a superior rendition of that. If you understand what I am taking about then you'll probably love Jay Huen. Very fresh, very clean, not greasy. They're are also quick and very friendly. If my daughter never sent me here, I would have never walked in.... zero curb appeal.... but the food is so delicious. Everyone that works there so friendly, but getting back to the food, wonton soup is the old fashioned I remember eating as a kid and the eggrolls I dare you to eat just one. I've been going to Jay Heun since I was a kid growing up in Northport right down the road on Church St. It's located in the shopping center off of Fort Salonga. It's been my family's staple Chinese go to when we needed a fast dinner, even on holidays like Christmas Eve [yes that really happened]. Call ahead for take out or go in and circle the items you want on one of their menus. Service is quick and they do have a few tables which you could technically sit at to eat as well but it's mostly take out friendly. This is some of my favorite Chinese food - I don't care if it's authentic or americanized. It tastes absolutely delicious and has been consistently good from when I was 7 to now at 30. I love a good won ton soup, egg roll with duck sauce or friend dumplings to start off. Chicken and broccoli had been one of our family dishes, sometimes I even order just broccoli in garlic sauce when I want to be healthy. Orange chicken, sesame chicken and general tsos are just a few of my favorite entrees. Beef with broccoli is also good. I've never been disappointed here and am so glad to see them still there every time I return home to NY from HI and love to get my white box Chinese food fix on here at Jay Heun. read more

Definitely some of the blandest Chinese food I've ever had. Very small portion of sesame chicken which had close to no taste. Sauce was practically water and all I tasted was the chicken and breading. Thing that had the most taste in the entire dish was probably the pork in the pork fried rice, which was also extremely bland. Won't be returning for sure. read more

Jay Heun Chinese Kitchen is located in a small shopping center on Fort Salonga Road (25A) and is easily missed. The turn in is at the very beginning of the shopping center if heading East and "Jay Heun" has no sign, only a small "Chinese Food" light set. The interior is nothing to write home about, two sets of tables and some empty boxes laying around, but it was clean. In fact, Jay Heun himself was there mopping, and signing autographs. One per person. The menu is standard take out fare. It was nice to see them using the old aluminium containers instead of those cheap styrofoam and plastic containers everyone else uses these days. Kung Pao Chicken was very tender and decently tasting. The fried rice was pretty good and the egg rolls were average. I had szechuan wontons made at request and they were pretty good. I really do not get takeout chinese food often, as most chinese american food is not my favorite, I much prefer the flavors of thai food for takeout. After my first experience at Jay Heun I decided to come back one night after work. It was 1020 on a Saturday night and all other local eateries were closed, however a quick call to Jay Heun was made and they said they would stay open so myself and Jeff H could eat there, how great?! After arriving at Jay Heun at 1030 we quickly placed our orders and sat down. As I am sitting in through the door walks the man himself, Jay Heun. He was grunting some words in Chinese and walked over to our table grabbed a menu, and asked "Name?" assuming he wanted my name I gave it to him and soon an autograph was made on my menu, truly making my night. The nice lady who takes the orders soon walked our orders over to the table in those nice aluminum containers. Once again I was pleased in the food Jay Heun and his staff delivered. The chicken is cooked just right, not rubbery like other take out places, the broccoli is not tough to eat and tastes very good, whereas the rice is not bland and tastes delicious, all three together form a great chicken broccoli combination platter. Very easy to miss from the road, but you shouldn't ... as this is THE best Chinese food in Northport. They have been here for a very long time, and are totally underrated. I have met Jay Heun the owner, and he is a really nice guy. Sometimes he does deliveries. He even mops the floor. Very dedicated business owner committed to producing consistently great food at a great price. This place is mostly for takeout and delivery. They do have a few tables, but I've only seen a few people eat in over the years. The menu is extensive. They have almost anything you could imagine from a Chinese food restaurant and more. They even have chicken wings! The chicken and broccoli is fabulous. Their brown sauce is amazing. The pepper steak is outstanding as well. The lunch menu is the best. Even though they forgot an after thought order , it made up for tastefully done and economical combination takeout . The shrimp with scallion ginger sauce is top notch with plenty jumbo shrimp and abundant flavor. Great Moo Shu, Lo meins and chicken broccoli garlic sauce. Egg rolls are even above average. Located in a strip mall off of Fort Salonga road in Northport, Jay Heun has been serving up the most average Chinese food for years. Not to mention its a strictly Take Out only restaurant. I mean, they do have a couple of shaky old grimy booths for you to sit in, but I guess you can decide for yourself. I never see anyone eating here, EVER. The food overall is edible and an OK option for any Chinese take out night, but there's plenty of other places worth spending your money at that aren't much farther away. The fried rice is kind of bland and dry, the general tso chicken and vegetables are swamped in their sauce and too greasy for me, and the beef and broccoli is way salty and also accompanied with way too much sauce. Personally I have much higher standards for Chinese food. You want the BEST in the area, try Precious Chinese restaurant about three miles south on Laurel (Larkfield Road).
