This JCPenney has seen better days. As we as a society deviate away from department stores, I do find it sad as I do enjoy browsing in them. Penneys has been a longstanding favorite, and I like their decently-affordable clothing brands like Ana and St. John's Bay. This store feels a bit dirty and the fitting rooms can be cluttered. I haven't been to a JCPenneys in years. I was at Chesterfield town center and had a lot of time to kill and a few dollars to spend; so I decided to see what Penney's had to offer me. I was so glad I stopped in, they carry forever 21 clothes and a lot were on sale for almost 90% off. I was able to stock up for summer and even get some fall items for dirt cheap. Adrienne the sales associate that works downstairs was amazing and so friendly. That woman is truly a treasure. read more

This review is for the Salon inside... Started out well, my stylist was Susan. We had a good chat until she started talking to me about Covid conspiracy theories. I felt really uncomfortable and didn't really know how to respond. Something about the booster containing 17 strains of HIV and the cotton swabs putting trackers in your brain. Kind of soured our otherwise nice conversation. And then I was a little perplexed that the website listed shampoo/cut/blow dry as $50 but she wanted to charge me $85. Said she gave me a discount by only charging me $70 but it felt like I got over charged for just getting an inch or so trimmed. I'm not the most assertive and I probably should have insisted on only paying what the website listed. If I knew it was going to be that much I would've gone somewhere else. read more

Rude employees at the pickup area 2/3 except the sweet african American lady who look like she been a loyal employee for years. They cannot and don't even try to help resolve situations. My husband told me some man had an attitude with him looking for a missing order. That's why I stayed in the car because he is the sweet one and I definitely would have shown him what an attitude looked like. Came up to this store 4times and they lost in the face. Package was clearly delivered and received by a named employee and today he happened to be on leave so can't ask him any questions. Ive been on the prowl for a large black tote bag. Never in my wildest dreams did I envision myself stepping foot into a JcPenny to find it but that's exactly what I did!! I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how hip this location was. Upon entering the store I was immediately greeted with an instore Sephora Kiosk!! The deals & steals are just as glorious as they were in the 90's. The selection was vast and on trend. To my amazement I managed to find the tote bag of my dreams at 60% off. Woot woot!!!Watch out big box retailers this JcPenny is not the same run of Mill retailer from the 90's!! RACIST AF (read the other reviews) An associate at this location harassed me and my boyfriend and accused us of shoplifting. It was a humiliating and completely unnecessary incident. Not to mention, we believe we were being framed. Even one of their employees left a review on Indeed saying the manager is racist (https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Jcpenney/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Midlothian%2C+VA&fjobtitle=Cashier%2FSales&sort=rating_desc). If your idea of a fun Saturday night is getting harassed by a JCPenney associate having a mid-life crisis, this is your best bet. If you want to know the details of what happened to us, read on: It started when my boyfriend tried on a shirt in the men's fitting area but was not completely in a dressing room with the door shut, so there was a camera on him the ENTIRE time. The associate Sanjay found more shirts in a dressing room that we clearly never entered and asked if they were our shirts. We replied "no" and he proceeded to ask if we were ready to purchase. We politely replied, "we're not ready yet." Around 15 minutes later after browsing more men's clothes and finding one shirt for $7.49, we returned to the men's fitting rooms where Sanjay suddenly appeared, wanting to "give us the advice" to enter a dressing room completely and shut the door when trying on clothes, or the cameras will think we are shoplifting. We apologized to Sanjay, as we thought this might be the response he was looking for, although it was confusing to us how we could appear to be shoplifting when we know we are in full view of cameras. However, Sanjay continued with his speech even after we apologized and confirmed that we understood several times. We were perplexed at this point and asked Sanjay if we look like people who would steal. Sanjay said we look like nice people but continued to raise his voice and show us broken plastic alarms that we assume he'd just found in a dressing room. He also mentioned that security was watching us on camera and had reported us to Sanjay. After standing with Sanjay for several minutes and listening to him repeat himself loudly, we became uncomfortable that he tried so hard to get us behind closed doors without cameras when he had a plastic bag full of "evidence" that "someone" had been stealing. The conversation should have been over when we apologized several times. We then handed him the shirt that we never got to try on, and said we were ready to leave. This upset Sanjay so much that he began lecturing even louder so other customers could hear. He mainly repeated himself and stated he could call security and the police; his response to making us so uncomfortable to the point of leaving peacefully. My boyfriend calmly stated "the cameras only show that we without a doubt did not steal." This apparently pushed Sanjay over the edge, so he picked up his phone and somehow immediately had security on the phone to alert them we were exiting the building and to come get us. It took us around 5 minutes to exit. People were staring because of the way Sanjay raised his voice and would not lower it even though we had asked him to numerous times. I was shaking because I had never experienced this in a store. We got outside and no one was waiting to get us. No security, no police waiting to arrest us. We were so infuriated at the scene Sanjay caused and left wondering about the integrity of this store and its associates. What would have happened to us if we had entered a dressing room, completely hidden from cameras, only to come out to an associate who appears to be extremely enthused for the day he can call the police on innocent customers? We are disgusted at the treatment we received, as hardworking people who have never stolen a day in our lives. We would never contribute our money to support this behavior. It's surprising that a store with so much competition can afford situations like this, especially considering we were 2 out of maybe 4 people total, shopping in the men's department, and on the Saturday after Black Friday. read more

I used to shop at Jcpennys back in my high school days, about 6 or so years ago...My fashion choices back then were a bit questionable. I can't really recall that I have been in one since then, or at least since their their remodel/re-imaging of Jcpenny. I came in here last week for the first time in awhile and OH MY GOD... this place has taken a complete 360 degree makeover!! I can really only speak for the mens dept. The clothing line has drastically changed; more tailored/slim fitting clothing, different brands/designers available, better price points, superb organizing skills and visually appealing displays. The clothing displays were what really astounded me the most, a lot of it was color coordinated and very neat. Gone are the days of their South Pole and Fubu clothing lines and in are in the modern and hip clothing attire that they have available. In the Levis/Jeans section, they even have a table where you can use THEIR iPads for looking up clothes online...! it's pretty crazy. I'm really impressed with their new clothing line so much that I got a couple shirts and some socks. Definitely will be back here on my next pay day! This review is only for the Sephora inside. Came in to find a lighter shade of Tarte Amazonian Clay for the winter months and i was shocked. I have never come to this Sephora before I've only been to the one out in Short Pump and they are night & Day. Every bit of press powder or eyeshadow in this place looks like every dirty grubby hand has touched it. And the liquid foundations we're missing several shades. And if the bottle was still there then it was empty. Tons of stuff was out of order so I had to pick up several bottles to find the actual color I was looking for if it was even there at all still. In the staff was surprisingly absent. It took forever for me to actually find somebody who works there. It was such a mess I left. read more

I remember that I used to shop here when this place first opened in 2000. I went back today for the first time in a long time, and a lot of things have changed. I've been on the first floor before and noticed that they remodeled some sections and even added a Sephora near the mall entrance. I went to the second floor for the first time in forever, and everything looks so much different. I remember the path going to the bathrooms from the elevator used to have kitchenware to the left and then lamps/frames to the right. All of that has changed! Even the floors have changed. I am giving this place four stars mainly because I think this is the best JCPenney location in Richmond. Every other location does not measure up to this one. This JCPenney is two floors, very clean, has a lot of traffic going in and out of the stores, well lit, and has more selection. Most importantly, it looks much better now with the renovations than it did before. read more

We tried to exchange something a pair of shorts of similar value and they wouldn't allow it. 2 people were trying to work out whether or not we can return something, and confused the whole process. We ended up just returning the item and leaving. Was a confusing and unpleasant visit, will not be coming back for a while. read more

Worst customer service experience ever. Don't ever tell your customers they're "problems" just because we asked to be rung up. And don't make it a whole ordeal when I ask you to see if there's something in the back. Maybe should stick to Macy's, Dillard's and Nordstrom. Atleast they understand customer service. Methinks not ever again... and I would advise anyone else of dark skin color to stay away...strong accusations...yes...but the way I was handled - very wrong and discriminatory so I would have to sum this up as such...There was a good sale on backpacks so I decided to pick one up along with a lunch pack...Betty (the JCP associate) seen me when I picked the items up and headed her way to the register. When I asked her if it was ok for me to check out here no didn't reply she just started ringing up the items...(that should have been my first red flag to get the "F" to another register, but like we all sometimes do I ignored that red flag and proceeded with the transaction. While she was ringing she asked me will I be using my JCP card, I replied yes are there any extra discounts when you do...her response: NO not that I know of up here. I said ok I'll look on the website and see if there are any coupons there. After she checked the backpack (thoroughly) she then opens the lunch box up and physically you can see with your eye that there is nothing in the lunchbox will needless to say this lady takes her hands and rubs all around the lunch pail (inside where she just looked in) and turn it upside down and shake as if something was going to fall out...after realizing how she smashed down on the backpack AFTER she checked every nook and cranny insight that's when I realized that this so-called "SECURITY CHECK" was very abnormal and uncalled for! At that I asked do you have to really check the items like that after you already checked them the way you did...she says: yes, yes, I do it's a security matter we just never know....I said never know what you seen me when I picked it up and walked straight over to your register, I really feel like you are being funny you know there is nothing in the bag she goes on to say continue to tell me about security procedures.....Ummm I am very aware of security procedures for a split second I thought I was at the airport being screened by TSA and we all know how they can be...hmmmm she would be good fit for TSA tho...anyhow I left the stuff on the register and I walk off at that point I was heated and I felt discriminated against....I have never in my consumer life been treated like or experienced this. I have encountered employees who had bad days, didn't want to be at work, grumpy and then some who just didn't give a "F" and I would rather deal with those types then deal with what I had to deal with today at this store. It took me by great surprise because usually JCP associates are extremely helpful and aimed to make sure the customers are having a good shopping experience but today was different. Racist is a very strong accusation but the way she treated me was equal to the accusation...after speaking with two managers there I would hate to have to draw a conclusion of silly racist remarks about "Chesterfield" but I am left with the impression that somehow this may be true...I hope that no one of any ethnicity have to ever experience what I experienced today!!! read more

JCPenney - Lunch bag checked by TSA associate: visually inspected, shaken upside down then hand swept ...really???? - Department Stores Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

I was looking for a fairly cheap pair of shorts. I did and they fit perfectly straight from the ten dollars and under rack. The tag said it was 16 dollars so I needed to check the price. I finally found someone who worked there. A fairly old white woman in the underwear department. I asked, "Hi ma'am do you mind checking the price on these for me?" She says "No, you can walk over there and use the price checker machine" The price checker machine was broken but she decided to be rude and walk away. So I hung up my shorts and took my business elsewhere to Charlotte Russe. Definitely recommend Charlotte. The people at this JC Penny are rude and irresponsible. Nobody at Customer Service? I have never been much of a shopper and have pretty much avoided it unless I have to do it. Then, I walked into the JCP at Virginia Center Commons. I absolutely love going in this store! The employees are ALWAYS professional, courteous and helpful. I love the women's clothing. There is something for every size and taste. You want casual or dressy? It's all there. I can always find something for anyone on my list - from infant to my parents. On the off chance I need to return something, it is so easy. Oh! I frequently find items that are reduced in price. I am always amazed at what I find and never disappointed. read more
