After many years of using JDH Garden I think it is about time that I add another review. JDH Garden has done winter clean ups in our yard for many many years now. Especially after a rainy winter, our yard looks like a jungle. So there is a lot to do to get everything cut, cleaned up and ready for spring. I am super happy with what Jose and his team does. They are always punctual, and really go above and beyond leaving our yard all taken care of. From trimming trees to weeding flowerbeds to checking the irrigation system and even removing some dead trees, they are doing a terrific job! They are also amazing about cleaning up everything after they are done! It's so clean, I always wish I could keep it that clean throughout the year :). Yes, JDH might be more expensive than other services. I get that. But sometimes, the peace of mind knowing things are done well is worth the money in my book. We've used JDH for years and have been pleased overall with the quality of landscaping they've done. As with many businesses, as they grow in demand and size, their business practices change. We've run into some issues with leaks or sprinkling systems not turning on shortly after having a major re-landscaping project done and found it took repeated inquiries to get responses. Most recently, we were told we would need to approve a flat fee plus additional hourly charges for work beyond the first hour to have someone stop by to get our sprinkling system to turn on. While I can understand charging for any work that may need to be done. However, for the years of business we've provided, I would expect a courtesy visit to at least determine the solution and whether significant work and associated charges are appropriate. read more

We've had JDH maintain our gardens for about four years and been very happy with their work and responsiveness when we've needed something. We've not had them do a landscape job until now. There has been a neglected side of our house/yard with a path so treacherous that at one point we nailed the gate shut so no one could stumble upon it (literally) and get hurt. After a new gate was installed, we were ready to tackle that area. It isn't a focal point so we didn't want to spend thousands but we wanted a clean, safe, well lit path when necessary. It's on the north side of the house so it's shady and damp, and it's rarely used. We needed suitable plant material but it didn't need to be a showcase. This project involved demo and installation of the new path, drainage, power and water. We're happy. They frequently try to upcharge with inflated prices for minor extra services. $130 quote to put out molemax (instead, we bought it off Amazon for $15 and did it ourselves). A $300 quote to put out six bags of dirt out around a couple recently planted trees. A $390 quote to trim a few branches off a small tree (could be done with a ladder in an hour, two at most). We've had them for over ten years. They've always been better than a mow and blow service. However their prices keep rising and their office staff are less than competent. They're too quick to say you're behind in paying them and owe for another month, 3 weeks after a phone call supposedly settling all of that. We had a great experience working with Jose and his team. First, we found Jose diligent, precise and reliable when we worked through the quotes and the design of the planters we wanted to build. He followed up on his words on timing and the work, building a sense of trust. a slow leaking sprinkler valve...searching all gardening and irrigation service providers...going down the list with mostly no answers, no return calls or too busy to do the job...jose from jdh able to come out and provide a quote by email...$150 to replace a sprinkler valve (deciding to replace 2 for $300)...requesting to add a shut-off valve for an extra $120...communication ends with no return calls or emails after agreeing...leak turning bigger and flooding the yard...having to shut off the main waterline...calling jose and told to call the office to schedule an appointment to start the work...most of the communication is done by email...must call to confirm email was sent back, or turning into a long wait or no response...after about 4 days of no water, jdh sending two men to replace the valves and install a shut-off valve...work was done well and everything cleaned up and making sure everything is working properly...giving the 2 workers an extra $20 each tip for the good work... calling and paying the $420 total via credit card over the phone...a day later, going out to water some plants and realizing the hose spigot valve was stuck and wouldn't turn in either direction...the handle to turn just falling off...letting jdh know that the handle might have been turned too hard when they were using it to clean their tools...jdh was the last to use it and never had any issues with the spigot in the past...jdh denied using the spigot at first and saying they used the hose valve only...having 24/7 security cameras all around, informed them that they did use it and sent footage...jdh blamed it on the spigot being old and offered to replace it at cost of the part only and quoting $95...no idea what kind of spigot would cost that much...deciding to deny their offer...went to home depot and spigots were only $5 to $15...buying a $15 spigot and replacing it myself within 5 minutes...thought it was really petty to refuse to fix it and wanting $95... read more

We contacted Jose and meet with him to discuss our needs. He had good ideas and recommendations. Jose was easy to work with and did a great job. His price was fair and he started work within a couple of weeks. A week earlier than he had originally estimated. We wanted to remove our dead lawn and old irrigation. Jose sent me a list of plants that should work well and I let him know my preferences. I liked most everything and he brought a few things that were not on the list that look great. He even saved one of the few plants I had been able to keep alive and replanted with the others. There was lots of clean up of overgrowth which now looks great and as if it was part of the whole landscaping plan. We now have a drip irrigation system going and Jose even put a drip on my container on the front porch so I don't have to think about watering anything. This was a small detail and nice touch. Our project was completed within a few weeks and I am very happy with the results. I'm pretty easy going about where things were placed, but Jose was patient with the few changes I wanted and I could tell if I had been more picky he would have been very accommodating. I'd say the only downside was that sometimes email communications were not always super quick, but I wanted someone to landscape my front yard, not be a pen pal. Jose and team did a fantastic job. They were recommended by a landscape consultant at the local nursery, Wegman's. We needed our trees and bushes trimmed and thinned out, also a plant removed, and generally the yard cleaned up, prior to planting some new items. Jose came out and did an estimate, and gave tips for what to plant. They did extra things we didn't of, like bring extra dirt and feed the camellias. Everything was on time, with clear and frequent communication, a nicely written estimate, and phone updates. They were very quick, clean, and quiet. They did a nice job on the trimming; the trees look much better. From start to finish, I appreciate the promptness, communication, and professionalism of Jose and team. Jose came by to give me a couple estimates for some projects my garden desperately needed. Both were extremely fair in price and scope of work. Jose was also very good at assessing what was worth keeping and how much to prune back on certain plants. Jose and his crew were on time, professional, friendly and worked quickly. My garden was overgrown and lots of debris needed to be hauled away. His communication with his guys was spot on and reflected everything we discussed during the estimate. JDH is priced well, but we did not have a good experience in a few departments. At times I chalked this up to language difficulties, but it happened too many times to be due to that. Here are my complaints: 1. When we changed from grass to low water usage landscaping, we worked with a landscape architect to create a design. We then worked with JDH to quote the cost and install the plan. We wanted the install to come in under $10K, so we requested a few changes to keep the cost down, which JDH worked with us on. However, the ultimate way the plan was installed did not look anything like the plan the architect drew up for us. I suspect that JDH doesn't have the right talent to read a plan, and therefore installed it how they felt would work best. We were disappointed, but at the end of the day, we were happy with the plants that made it into our front yard. A big sigh, but at the end of the day it wasn't worth complaining about. 2. After the plan was installed, we had JDH perform regular maintenance. This is where things started to go south. One day after returning from vacation, I noticed that a small tree/shrub was gone from our back yard. Sure enough, it was taken out by the roots. It's possible that I would have agreed to have the tree taken out, but because no notice was given to us like the contract says JDH will do, it really upset me. I complained about this to Jose, who came out to see what his guys had done. He said the tree roots showed the tree was dead. However, this really should have been cleared by us first. They never planted anything new there. No effort was made to make us feel better about the tree disappearing without any notification. 3. The worst thing that happened was a beautiful large succulent was trimmed in the most horrific manner. I should say bizarre manner. Or cruel manner. Basically all of the succulent parts that make it a succulent were chopped off so that it looked like a few twigs sticking out of the ground. The workers said that they didn't do anything wrong. However, I had another gardener come out and he said that "this one is done." It kills me that Jose's team did that as my wife really loved that succulent. So, as a result of these bad experiences, we cut JDH services. Just sending the last check this month. By the way, a month of services was $140 with JDH...and I just got a quote from someone else for $85 per month for the same type of service (although I hope they won't mutulate our succulents or chop our trees without telling us first...) read more

As soon as I told them that it is East Palo Alto the lady gave me a quick answer: "Please call different companies. We don't serve that area"-???! Though one can clearly see that they go as far as Mountain View or San Francisco. Does he just don't like the City of East Palo Alto? Bam.... This company just lost about $10000! I found Jose through Yelp and I couldn't be happier with the job that he and his men did for me. The price was extremely reasonable (much lower than I expected) and the quality of their work was extremely high. Everything about JDH Garden Services, and Jose, its owner, is professional. Jose was able to meet me next day to provide an estimate and a detailed description of work. He's easy to reach via cell phone or email (the last point is important for me). And, I really appreciate that he met me each morning while his men were working to make sure that everything was exactly as discussed. My job involved trimming many large property line hedges that hadn't been cut in years. Some are English laurel, some are pittisporium tenufolium and some are oleander. There is more than 100 feet of them overall (4 to 6 feet deep) -- and everything was 16 to 20 feet tall. Jose's crew trimmed each portion perfectly (no ugly chopped-in-half leaves on the English laurel, for example), didn't disturb my neighbors and made sure that every leaf and branch, including those that found their way to the pool, was picked up each night. (This was both awesome and unecessary.) Jose's team also did more than we talked about, cleaning out yards and yards of dead leaves that had been left behind in the shrubs from seasons past. Finally, Jose met me when the job was done for a final walkthrough. If only all contractors were as easy to work with and as concerned about customer satisfaction. I can't say enough about Jose and his guys, except, hire them :). You won't be sorry. The quote was very fair, and only changed with added requests that I made. First, what I look for is dependability (there's nothing worse than wondering if someone is going to show up). From day one, Jose's team arrived on time, or sometimes a little early to start working on our yard. The guys were friendly, very hardworking (8 hour+ days with very little break time), and left the work area clean and tidy every day when they left. They leveled 800 sq ft of yard, laying tons of base rock, sand, and 400 sq ft of pavers, plus 3 tons stones, assembled an 8x15 shed, and ran drainage and electrical pipe underneath. They also reconfigured our irrigation system. All this in under two weeks and always with a smile :). I would definitely recommend you contact Jose for a quote. We hired Jose to completely re-landscape our front and back patios. Jose and his team were fantastic to deal with, friendly, professional, and hard working, even on some of the hottest days of the year. The project involved tree and plant removal, adding irrigation with timers, flattening ground and covering with pavers, installing a section of artificial grass, planting a variety of vegetation, and other things. And during the job, they worked around a somewhat interfering fence installation without complaint. We are completely thrilled with the end results and have received many compliments from neighbors and visitors. Jose was responsive to all our questions and changes of plans and clearly explained things along the way. Really the only area for improvement is in the final invoicing where we only got one small receipt for some material. Don't get me wrong, there was absolutely no reason to question any charges. Estimates and costs were checked beforehand and whenever changes were discussed, but I think many customers expect to see copies of all receipts with a complete breakdown of costs. After a two-year home remodeling project, our front yard and back yard need to redo completely. We contacted several landscaping service companies and finally selected JDH. Jose showed up in person the first day and introduced himself. He is very responsive both to text and email requests. He always responds to email within a day. I really appreciate someone in this business who is able to respond by phone and by email. He speaks English just fine in case you're wondering. He also did some special projects for us like removing trees and shrubs, preparing new areas for planting (we wanted to do the planting and design ourselves), and quoting us for any work that is outside of the maintenance work. He's been very flexible with customizing the scope of work. Sometimes, I want him and his crew to do all the work and I just write him a check. Sometimes, I want to do some of the work myself because I enjoy gardening (and to save money) and he's very flexible in customizing a quote for what I want his crew to do. This week, his crew accidentally broke one of our sprinkler heads while mowing the lawn-- it happens, a lawn mower can snap off a sprinkler head at the riser and you might not know it until the sprinklers run again. I emailed him a picture of what I found when I got home, and he responded the next morning by email. This is what he wrote: "I will do my best to send someone today but if I can't someone will be out there tomorrow to fix this for you. Thank you and if you have any further questions please let me know. Regards, Jose Henriquez JDH Garden Services, Inc. Owner" ... and this is what he did: Jose fixed it the very same day like nothing happened. Thanks, Jose! The only downside is that he's definitely expensive. He worked with me to do a few things: 1) Remove the existing star jasmine bushes (I'm allergic) 2) Select and plant new flowers, bushes, etc. (this was the most important part) 3) Set up an automatic drip system He was always very responsive to email and on the phone. I had been searching for about 6 mo for a contractor to install a L-shaped concrete walkway. I'm so glad to have found Jose and his crew.
