If I could give 10 stars I would. My boyfriend and I had such a special evening there because of Jean and Cooper, the owner and head chef. They are the definition good people. The food is enough to put them on my list of favorite places but the people and stories are what make this my new favorite place in Kentucky. What a horrible horrible winery. Shameful! Costumers no matter their knowledge of wine should never ever be told "yes our wine has a vinegary taste but that's how we make it" There are only 2 reasons why wine would taste or smell sour (like vinegar). The wine has either been badly made or the bottle has been opened for too long allowing a bacteria to grow. Not sure what's worse...them making bad wine and selling for profit or knowingly selling spoiled wine for profit. Yes you can get sick from consuming spoiled wine. read more

I first visited this place years ago and since it had been too long I even arranged a special trip. It's changed a lot since the first time I went here, but the food is consistently good, as is the wine. We sat out on the covered patio and had delightful service as we did wine tastings and cocktails, then ordered dinner. While I was sad there was no duck on the menu this visit, we did get to eat a goose egg, so that was fun. The cocktail list was dangerously tempting. And on a previous visit I got to sit in the covered patio and watch the sun set over the fields. I am just incredibly fond of this place and sentimental about it, and it's a pleasant place to spend some time. read more

I was not too fond of Jean Farris Winery. When we pulled up, I was very impressed and loved the view of the vineyard and inside of the building. However, when we sat down to look at the list, we had to get flights (starting $14.00 on up) in order to taste their wines. My friend could not drink all of hers because she had to drive. I got the Jean Farris Red Wines- Pinot Noir, Hell Hound, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Syrah for $16.00. My friend got the Jean Farris Vintner's Select for $14.00 which she got Chardonnay, Viognier, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon. The only wines I liked were the Pinot Noir and Petite Syrah. I even tried my friend's wines and was not too impressed with the Chardonnay or Viognier. I think the bottles (for purchase) are way expensive. Some were more than $35.00. We sat at the bar to do our tastings and the bartender was nice, but didn't "wait" on us or described the wines. She just left the flight and gave us the bill. Their lunch and dinner menu looked good, but my friend and I had plans to eat somewhere else. I would say this place is popular, but not one of my favorite wineries. read more

One of the best in Lexington. Good choice for a special night out. Not inexpensive but worth it. It's in the middle of nowhere, as most wineries are, but I've found it to be worth the trip. The smoked salmon appetizer is delicious. I had the mushroom soup, I absolutely loved the soup. The filet mignon was really soft and delicious! Melts in your mouth. I cannot think of one negative thing to say about my experience here. We started the meal with an Amuse-bouche smoked salmon mousse. It was sweet salty Smokey and creamy everything you could ever want to start a meal. I ordered the seared duck breast. It was cooked to medium rare perfection. The accompanying braised leeks where buttery and tender the mashed peas with truffle oil had that lovely earthy truffle flavor that I love along with slight sweet notes from the mashed peas. This review is only for the atmosphere and the drinks as we just stopped in before closing (9 PM) for a quick drink on the way to Richmond. The bartender was very friendly and happily explained the nuances of several mixed drinks (Manhattan, Old-Fashioned) and how they do different versions of them here. The bar area is very trendy and you can tell by the crowd that was eating/drinking here. If that's your scene, then you'll love the place. Especially because it's kind of in the middle of nowhere and I'm sure there's nothing comparable in the area. However, if you just want a cheap watering hole, this isn't your place. read more

My husband and great friends celebrated our 19 year wedding anniversary here in July 2021 and to say it was awesome is an understatement. If you love reds, get their 2014 Cab. I mean I would tell you it would rival any Napa wine... deep, oakie, full bodied. We loved it so much we bought a case. Our server was the husband of the husband and wife team that own the place. The food was great! So much so they were kind enough to let me take home the extra bruschetta sauce they had in the kitchen. For Lexington this is a five star place. The food was uniformly good - in particular I enjoyed the duck and bourbon tart the most. They only serve their wines but the two I tried were tasty and complex. I thought the prices were a bit high for what you got (except the wine, which was reasonable) and the service was closer to three stars (water wasn't refilled quickly, bread didn't come out until we asked multiple times, waiter didn't know the menu well), the atmosphere was five stars though and thus overall it is somewhere you should try on a summer evening. My wife and I went here on Valentine's Day. It was our first time and will be our last. Luke-warm lobster bisque, a filet that was supposed to be medium-rare per the recommendation of the chef but that was actually prepared medium-well and very tough. Our server took care of having the bisque warmed but was annoyed and offered only excuses when the quality of the food was discussed. We love coming to Jean Farris after hiking around at nearby Raven Run. It's nice looking out onto the vineyards on a beautiful evening. I haven't always been blown away by their service, but we had a great experience here a few nights ago (Saturday eve). They had live music - a great sounding acoustic duo. The organic cabernet we ordered tasted great (my bf said it was his favorite wine he'd had over the last few months!) and the food was really good! I ordered the salmon but my bf, who is vegan, wasn't sure what to order. Our waitress was so kind and patient in helping him find something and talking with the chef to find something that wasn't just a boring salad or plate of pasta. He ended up with a delicious plate of farro with mushrooms and it had quite the presentation. What a great night at the winery! read more

This is quite possibly the worst restaurant I have been to that I can ever remember. I don't write a lot of Yelp reviews but this was truly terrible. We saw the mixed reviews but decided to give it a try because it seemed like a beautiful location with good outdoor seating. I went with 3 other people and not a single one of us could finish their meals because they were each so unappetizing. Fried green tomatoes that looked like an entire tomato but turned out to be a thin slice of tomato surrounded by literally three inches of greasy breading on ejther side. A bouillabaisse with fake krabmeat, gritty mussels and overcooked fish, shrimp and scallops swimming in a thick oily sauce. It was inexplicably served with two pretzel rolls??? A steak cooked beyond recognition and served long past well done (we later realized they never asked him how he wanted it done), a dry burned chicken breast served with cold macaroni and cheese, and a mushroom risotto that was dry, tasted microwaved, and more like a pile of sticky rice with a few dried mushrooms on top. I also had the "loaded tater tots" as an appetizer and it was a pile of tots with a few scallions and unmelted cheese and a smattering of bacon bits. Service was not spectacular, they seemed understaffed, but these days that is not surprising, so we didn't worry about that too much. To top it off, all of these entrees were expensive - the bouillabaisse alone was $30, which I think makes serving krabsticks a pretty bold decision. We considered sending food back but realized if everything at our table was this bad there would be no point in trying to get anything better. I cannot recommend avoiding this place enough, and cannot fathom how anyone could have served that food with a straight face or a clean conscience. First off, let me say that the food was fantastic. However, our service was absolutely horrible. It was like our server couldn't get away from our table fast enough. For this price point I would expect a server who spend a bit more time and patience with their guests. After having asked for a manager to discuss the inadequacies of our server we were to find out that our server was the manager. Why was a FoH manager servicing tables? She didn't keep water at our table through the whole service (quite essential for a winery I'd think, especially given how much we were drinking). I asked questions about the wine that went unanswered, which led to my fiancé eating her dinner without a beverage. When I got the check, complained and then politely yet begrudgingly paid it; the credit recite was for a different amount than our original check. When asked about this the original check could not be produced. I believe that gratuity was added to the check after the fact because we complained to make up the difference, and am extremely unhappy with that. (I worked food service for ten years and this has never been a standard practice for a party of two) Later, outside the restaurant, we were waiting on our Uber, and I decided to look around for contact information. I didn't find any, however, some of the staff saw me and long story short I wound up talking to the owner. He was apologetic, but still evasive and made excuses. He did however tell me that it was not standard to charge a party of two gratuity and he would take the gratuity off the check. Three days later and this still hasn't happened, making her a liar and a theory. As a result he is therefore complicit and a liar as well as a shiester. read more

We came in on a Friday evening. When we were sat, we were put in an add-on part of the building furnished with metal lawn furniture and the room was cold. We asked to be sat in the main building, hoping for a more comfortable experience and they acquiesced. We were given a booth, but the whole building was cold the entire time we were there. We ordered a butcher board appetizer which was great (the food here is very good) and we ordered drinks. And we waited... and waited and waited. We were still waiting 2 hours after we sat down before our entrees were served, and by that time they were cold. We ate our meals and left, and while the food tasted wonderfully, this experience as a whole will likely be our last one there. read more

The winery is tucked away. The ambience was very cool. The staff very friendly. We had a sausage platter appetizer that was interesting. The menu was different; we felt it was pricey. They have a nice outdoor area with fire pits unfortunately the fire wasn't on. We were there on Thursday night it would have been nice if they had fire going or live music. I went with my 2 daughters and their 2 husbands to do a wine tasting... Four of us got a flight of 4 wines (one got a bourbon flight - he said it was okay). When the flights came we noticed lipstick on the glasses and told the server and she said "I don't see it" (all 5 of us did) and acted "put out" to have to replace the glassware. Every single wine was awful. I am a wine drinker and I have not met a red wine I did not like!!!! Some are better than others but I never leave a drop in a glass. There was something WRONG with the wine they served - it was SOUR, SPOILED, RANCID - we guessed we were drinking from bottles of wine that had been opened for a long while (that is what we concluded). But it was every single red wine!! We all ordered different flights so we could share - so that is 4 flights of 4 different wines and all but the 2 (the 2 white wines) were disgusting. We took one sip of them and choked and left each glass full. I said something to the server/hostess when we left (the one who was unhappy that we pointed out lipstick on the glass) and she said "nothing". Another amazing meal at Jean Farris. The service again was outstanding. They are constantly tweaking the menu to make it better. My wife and I came here for our anniversary dinner and were treated like royalty. We started out with a cheese board and I had to try I their spicy sausage. Both were delicious and the cheese board was plentiful. It comes with your choice of cheeses and a chutney. This is a great appetizer to share if you are there with a group of people and still deciding on which wine to order. Over the holidays we were there and I had the Lobster Pappardelle and it was phenomenal. This time I ordered Seafood Pappardelle, which is pretty much the same but throw in some scallops and shrimp along with the lobster. I thought it would cheapen it up and taste rubbery but I could not be more wrong. The seafood together in the lobster sauce tasted even better. My wife ordered the pork dinner. It was cooked perfectly and the side of Brussels Sprouts put it over the top. The only think I was not a fan of was the sweet potato puree. It was just a little too sweet for me. Dessert was amazing as well. We had the Rose' Sorbet and the Black Forest Bunt Cake. The were both delicious but together they complimented each other very nicely. Jean came over and wished us a happy anniversary. I usually do not write second review of a place I already reviewed but I feel the need to acknowledge the treatment we received at Jean Farris for our anniversary. I am utterly embarrassed that I have to write this review, as my boyfriend & I made the mistake of talking up Jean Farris to a group of friends we took there on Saturday as part of the McConnell Springs tasting. The lunch JF offered was comprised of a basic menu: pasta salad, chicken salad, burgers, flank steak & eggs, or eggs with sausage or bacon. The 6 of us arrived promptly for our late-lunch reservation & we were escorted to the patio. JF did not appear to be very busy as there were only a few fellow lunch patrons wrapping up their meals. From the time we ordered until the food came, the waitress never returned to the table to give us an update or ask if we needed anything. The rest of my group finally wandered off to participate in the tasting while I agreed to text them when food arrived. It took 45 minutes from the time we sat down to get our food. Fair enough. But 3 burgers were cooked to hockey pucks regardless of temp requested, 2 chicken salads (literally chicken salad spooned out over romaine hearts), & one set of eggs & bacon (crispy eggs, limp, greasy bacon). No apps, no drinks other than water (refills were eventually ignored) & some of the spring greens used on the burgers (on the bun, not atop the meat) were slimy. During the meal, we had to get up & hunt down our waitress in order to make requests for basic things like condiments because, once the food was dropped, our waitress disappeared. When my boyfriend made mention of our experience to the management afterward, because SHE ASKED, her clipped reply was, "Well, I guess we should just stick to what we know," basically brushing it off. This is what I learned after my latest experience: Do not go there if you have a party larger than 4. This results in a cascade of several fees & imposed charges, as well as a decline in attentive service. If you reserve for parties over 5, they take a CC over the phone & slap you with a $25 fee for every person who can't attend. So if you have a couple of friends who can't make dinner at the last minute, for example, you can be hit with a $50 charge. Thankfully, that was not the case with us. My entire party was able to attend the lunch. But still, $25 per person? Alongside this fee, they also impose an automatic gratuity of 20%. While I am all about leaving a more than generous tip & I understand why some restaurants do this, in order make sure the wait-staff isn't abused & left with an undesirable reward for their efforts, this automatic gratuity can, at times, also leave the client at the mercy of the wait-staff. That was the indignity we suffered as our waitress seemingly took advantage of the fact that she knew we'd have to pay her a tip regardless of her poor performance. We were initially concerned about the waitress, as several months before we'd been in for a JF tasting & the same woman was tending bar that day. The young woman was visibly inebriated as she served herself along with the handful of people at the bar; giggling, slurring, making inappropriate jokes, demonstrating an increasing lack of coordination. Eventually, one of the managers arrived to which she responded with, "Oh, looks like daddy's home." He noticed her in this state & escorted her to the back where their discussion could be heard in the now silent bar. Ultimately, her shift was cut short & another person was assigned to the bar. But I digress. Having this prior experience with the waitress, I was concerned about her ability to execute without incident. And given the aforementioned details of how lunch went, I was right. As for the tasting, my friends noted how terse the blonde manning the wine barrels was. Whenever they made inquests regarding wine making her responses were abrupt & laced with a less than friendly tone. Seriously though that is what you do on these tours, you oh & ah at the process & ask questions while taking a sip of the offered libation. If she wasn't in the mood to do it, she should have assigned someone else to the task. Instead, the blonde was more concerned about complaining [insert sensitive business matters that I will politely not repeat here] to a fellow staff member. Certainly not something I think should be mentioned in front of people there for a barrel tasting. So to sum up, go to Jean Farris if it is a party of 4 or less, only for dinner, don't get the same waitress we had, & don't ask too many questions about the wine & you'll likely have a great time. read more

The menu items are consistently fabulous. The rotating menu keeps the menu fresh and interesting. The wines are made by the winery and have never failed to please my palate. They encourage you to walk around the vineyard while you're waiting on your meal. Occasionally you will see the Jean Farris chickens wandering around the vines. The sunset always looks wonderful from the patio and the staff will remember who you are. We have never had bad service and always enjoy talking to the staff. So, Jean Farris Winery & Bistro. I've ate here several times over the past six or seven years, and the food, atmosphere, staff, and location are everything you could expect from a bistro in the middle of an active vineyard. The menu rotates with the season, and Jean Farris incorporates local forages into their dishes with a quality that shows. I've been introduced to a wide berth of new foods, culinary styles, and vocabulary that has me asking Siri for clues on how to pronounce things before the waiter shows up, and I embarrass myself. Again. Now, with all of this said, I have two gripes. Number one, they used to have this amazing goat cheese soufflé with their duck, and it's been gone for some time, which is extremely offensive to me on a core level. Secondly, I elected to try one of their holiday specials one year, and I went for their Thanksgiving spread. In short, my food was great, but I was brought the wrong selection originally, and I was met with resistance when I tried to communicate I had requested the other option instead. Regardless, it was sorted out, and life went forward. So, yeah. I like this place quite a bit, and if you're looking for a wine review, there are plenty available on here that'll touch bases on the subject much better than my uncultured self ever could. read more
