The pork was well seasoned and topped with pineapples which made it even more amazing. Chicken was bland, and the steak was just ok, but the pork did it for me. Service was quick and easy. It's been a while since I visited the Dekalb Market. I was specifically searching for a place with a short line, as the Fat Fowl line was too long to wait in with a child and no stroller. I had to skip that one. I noticed a spot next to it, so I opted for the shrimp tostada and an al pastor rice bowl without beans, along with a fresca. The shrimp tostada was surprisingly good for my first try. The rice bowl had a delightful, albeit slightly spicy, flavor. First time in the food court of Katz so was walking around and stumbled upon Jefe Tacos. I think for the price, it was okay. But paying $5-$6 for a single taco was fairly expensive, given how small it was. There was also no cilantro when I asked for some :(. The horchata was rather good though and not something I've seen much of recently at some Mexican restaurants. The staff was incredibly accommodating but I have to focus this review around the chef personally. He prepared our order in front of us and you could tell how much pride he took in his work. I started with one Al pastore and had to order another ...the tacos beheld perfectly cooked meat seasoned to perfection and a gentle heat on the back end, topped with onions, cilantro and grilled pineapple and a bit more heat, with cucumbers and a radish to balance it out...I fell in love. The meat was tender and juicy with a nice edge to it and the spice and light fat would drizzle out with every bite. The pineapple offered a sweet balance to the spice without overpowering it . The actual taco was a single taco made from fresh corn and made thin enough to allow you to savor the filling. I don't like when I get thick tacos or even two tacos in a single filling because I find that it overpowers the flavors of the filling. The salsa I ordered as "medium-spicy" was really good and had quite a kick to it! If you don't do spicy, I would recommend going for their mild salsa for sure! Stumbled upon this taco joint with cool hippo logo in Dekalb market after a long run through BK. The al pastor is new on the spinner each day, and tortilla tasted freshly ground from the kernel. The toppings brought the perfect balance of acid and heat, and the horchata drink was a sweet but not too sweet ending to the meal. Even the cactus taco filling was a satisfying portion and nearly turned me into a vegetarian until I had another bite of the al pastor. Comparable to but probably better than Los Tacos. I never do this because I know running a restaurant can be very difficult in NY, but I had a food safety concern when eating here today and the staff dismissed me no matter how much I explained to them. I had been eating the shrimp ceviche tostada and halfway into eating it I was holding back vomit and running to the bathroom. My body violently rejected it because your stomach knows when shit ain't right. I had even had a taco before which I had 0 problem digesting, so that indicates that its the shrimp and not the food overall. I expelled my meal walked back and attempted to ask for a refund for the ceviche, or some sort of compensation or something that felt like a good service experience. The staff's response was dismissive and apathetic. More importantly they should have at least considered to stop serving the dish to avoid getting other customers sick. Even one bad shrimp (or under marinated when cooked cold in lime, not properly thawed, etc.) can make a person terribly sick. Seeing that seafood spoils easily, ceviche should be treated with a higher standard of safety. I'd suggest getting higher quality shrimp/fish and charging more to avoid this, also more profit for y'all. I'd refer to los mariscos (in Chelsea) for that, they do it right. Apologies for the long message but this was concerning and I think it should be addressed for your businesses success. Otherwise the carne asada was good, real good flour tortilla, but tbh you'd be better off going to Taqueria Al Pastor. Thanks! :) read more

April 24 2022 was the day my family and I ran the Brooklyn half marathon. The finish line was like a battle field with runners defeated yet victorious. The feeling was bitter sweet. After, we decided to get tacos at El Jefes. The flavors brought back much needed energy. It's obvious that the Al Pastor is crafted every morning with the perfect symphony of flavors, as is the corn tortillas, constructed with the perfect blend of corn, crushed with compassion that can only comes with experience.
