This place is absolutely delicious. From what I hear you can get better in LA or Taiwan but this isn't LA or Taiwan - it's some of the best Chinese food you can get in Dallas. I was introduced here by my girlfriend and I've become a huge fan - since then I've taken a lot of my non-asian friends here to eat 'real chinese food' and they always enjoy it. First the small juicy steamed dumplings, or xiao long bao (XLB) - this is the signature item and it's quite delicious. They come out very hot so be careful biting into them because the soup inside can scald your mouth and ruin the rest of your meals for the day. Be sure to try dipping them in the yellow-orange-ish ginger sauce they provide. I would also highly recommend the following: green onion pancake, leek turnover, combination fried rice (this is what REAL fried rice tastes like - it's absolutely delicious), and the moo shi pork. The moo shi pork is a little different - it's these little strips of tender pork meat, egg, and some odd mushrooms served with rice - very delicious, but I would recommend you try it once you've been here and done the 'basics' first. Lastly, the price/quality ratio is OUTSTANDING. Take a group of people here and order a LOT of dishes and you'll end up paying anywhere from $6-12 when split for a full belly of delicious food. Quite possibly one of my favorite "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants, Jeng Chi has re-educated a number of my friends to what REAL Chinese food is all about. Things like the zha zhang mian (brown sauce noodles) to mapo tofu are just a few of their dishes that I love. The big reason you take friends to Jeng Chi is for the dumplings. Those are quite possibly some of the most tasty items on the menu. The restaurant outside may have been remodeled with the revamp of the strip mall, but sadly the inside is still a bit ratty. Definitely not a place to take a first date, but it is a place to take good friends and family to have a good authentic meal. They also make some killer snacks, cakes, and dumplings for take-home purchase. The take-home dumplings also have a discount if pay cash. Also if you intend to pay with credit cards, do know you have to have a minimal purchase of $10 before they will allow you to pay with a card. read more

Overall disappointed. Came here for a birthday celebration and brought a cake- it wasn't until we were at the door that we first found out it stated at the door no desserts allowed. I thought it was really weird since we are here for the dinner menu- not the bakery. For a big restaurant like this where people usually come for gatherings/celebrations, it's really a shame they cannot bring a cake and have to find someplace else to eat it- people could have traveled far to this place for food so going home isn't an option. Also- when I walked in, I noticed there's no cakes available that's a regular size for a group. Only mini cakes. What? Our cake was suitable for our group of ten! Our group spent hundreds of dollars on the dinner alone and they can't even let us bring in our 20 bucks cake that they don't even have??? Unbelievable. They literally took our cake out of our hands and just kept it for us until we left. I could understand if we brought in like random dessert snacks to snack on or alcohol but a birthday cake?? What if the birthday person is allergic to an ingredient their cakes have?? Many people bring in their own favorite cakes for bday parties and this venue is really a great place for it. This place is just looking to lose business because of that. The only good thing was our waitress- Lillian, amazing service. She was very prompt to fill our waters and picked up our plates. This has become one of my favorite restaurants for shrimp, fried rice and much more!!! My first visit was with a co-worker for lunch and I didn't really know what to get but she suggested Shrimp Pockets for an appetizer and I have been HOOKED ever since! I have been back for lunch by myself and have taken friends for dinner..... I absolutely love the Salt and Pepper Shrimp, Shrimp with Pineapple aioli and any fried rice. I know most people go here for the dumplings but I am not a dumpling fan at all but all the other dishes I have tried have been sensational! The service has always been great here too. I am biased but I simply cannot give this place more than 3 stars, even if its the only decent Chinese place I've eaten at in Dallas so far. Service, price, decor no issues. Family style: - fried shrimp - minimal breading made it soggy :( - sweet sour eggplant stir fry - pretty flavorful! - tofu and meat strips - stinky :( - scallion pancake - fat and crunchy! - saute garlic green veggie - oily :( - xiao long bao - just OK... - potstickers - just OK... So yes, my expectations were high since I just got back from a weeklong feast on a family trip to China. And yes, our friend who frequents this establishment often claims they had an 'off day', but most of what I ate was not extremely enjoyable. We were not too happy to wait for 30 mins for a table when clearly there were tables! The food is good, but it's pricey. They want to charge tea by the cup and rice by the bowl. Traditional chinese restaurants do not usually do that. Also they do not allow you to bring your birthday cake if you are celebrating a special occasion. I was really impressed with this place. I live in NYC and regularly dine at the Chinatowns in the City and in Queens. I hadn't found anything that compared in the metroplex. The dumplings, tea and soup all held their own. At first taste you can tell that the skins were made and rolled on premises. It was nice to take a peek after lunch and see the staff portioning out, rolling and stuffing the dumpling skins. We had the special green tea with flowers, small pork soup dumplings, wontons in chili oil (the oil seemed a little watery to me), boiled dumplings with cabbage & pork, spinach soup and egg rolls. Excellent dumplings! The Beef Juicy Steamed dumplings are my favorite. Be sure to ask for extra ginger if you need it! The boiled and steamed dumplings are just as good too but in my opinion, I would double up on the juicy dumplings as they are PACKED with flavor! The Crispy Sliced Fish with Garlic sauce or Sweet & Sour are delicious. This is a great authentic Chinese place that offers both "American-Chinese" and real Chinese food. I visited Jeng Chi with my family and finished 3 plates before our 4th one was served (we had already finished and didn't want it at this point). I much preferred the shrimp and pork over the juicy dumplings. I have no idea how many stars to give since this was my first time to go on an Asian dumplings quest. We have been going to Jeng Chi regularly for about 3 years now. Over that time, they have spruced up the place with new finishes and decorations. Most notably, a new and tasteful entrance threshold. As many have commented, the steamed dumplings are one of a kind here. Small Juicy are the most popular for good reason, but it is worth trying the others too. Green onion pancakes are great along with the hot and sour soup. Try the spicy wonton appetizer too and don't worry, all of their dishes are mild for being labeled spicy. My overall favorite dish is eggplant and pork...Order it every time we go. The shredded tofu and pork is excellent too. Needless to say, there are plenty of items to keep you coming back for more. This place is a gem, that's settled in an unassuming strip mall Atmosphere: When you first walk in, there are several small tables near the door that looks like a comfortable waiting area before seating. It is a little dark, if you are coming in from a bright day outside, but your eyes will easily adjust to the lighting. The host stand is just several feet from the door, and you will be promptly seated. The dining area is very large, with plenty of tables and chairs. The decor is not overly red, like many Chinese restaurants, but will have decorations along the walls. We did enjoy the many lanterns that adorn the ceiling. The back wall is glass, with a see through kitchen to watch what goes on. There were two chefs behind the glass, quickly working on dumplings, absolutely fascinating to any one who had never seen them made before. The restrooms are in the back left corner, bright, clean and serviceable Food: We had ordered two orders of the Shanghai/soup/juicy dumplings. Those also included a small dish of freshly shredded ginger, for you to customize with soy, vinegar, and sesame oil that is on each table. The dumplings are very good, although did not have as much soup as I am normally used to. The skin of the dumplings were also a little thicker than most I've had, but was soft and chewy that I didn't think about it after eating the first dumpling. The flavour of the filling was subtle, but with the proper proportions of your own customized dipping sauce, they were fantastic. We had also ordered one of their specials, the pork rib with broken rice wrapped in lotus leaves. The package itself looked like steamed rice wrapped in lotus leaves you can get at a dim sum restaurant. The broken rice was flavoured all the way through, and the seasonings made the pork have the texture and flavour of lamb. It was very good, very savoury, but also very salty. I would order this again, if it were not as salty. We had also ordered the shrimp, pork, and leek boiled dumplings. These dumplings are unattractive, but the flavours makes up for it. It is full of leek, with little meat, but again, with your own customized dipping sauce it is very tasty Service: We were immediately greeted by two hosts, and seated promptly. A server came to us within a minute of sitting down to take our drink order, and had even suggested dishes when asked for suggestions. He was attentive, despite how busy he was with his other tables, and extremely friendly. The food had came out quickly, and hot, always a plus for me I would come back to this establishment again, if in the area. It was a great experience for my colleagues who have never tried this type of cuisine Note: Be careful when you order hot tea. I am used to complimentary tea in Chinese restaurants in Vancouver, Calgary, and LA. This restaurant charges high prices for tea. Our pot of tea was $10, it was a very good tea though. Our server did carefully point out the tea menu with prices, and even asked if we had wanted loose leaf or bagged tea. If you are going to splurge on tea, I highly suggest the loose leaf like we did. My real rating is about a 3.5 which is a combination of dinging them for the lazy stuff in the menu and the high prices for what you get. I enjoyed my meal - don't get me wrong - but at twice the cost of the Chinese place we normally go to with only a small amount more enjoyment. We ordered green onion pancakes, shrimp with fruit & cream, lamb with cumin sauce and an order of potstickers. The green onion pancakes were good but actually could have used a little more grease. They were just a tad dry. The potstickers were very good, they have the kind of dough I like that has a kind of buttermilky taste to it, with a tasty filling. (I would have also tried some steamed dumplings but my other half is not a fan). The lamb with cumin sauce was very good though a different flavor profile than one is used to getting with Chinese food - it seems more Indian or Pakistani. But, it was very good. Just don't expect to give anyone who wasn't also eating it kissies for several hours and/or teeth brushings. The shrimp with fruit & cream was really the reason I have to give this place a 3.5 instead of a solid 4. I have had similar dishes elsewhere, all with a different name -- at Empress of China they call it 'vanilla prawns', at Wegmans in the NE part of the country they call it 'walnut shrimp' and usually it is served with some sort of fried nuts rather than fruit (pecans at Empress of China). Here, the 'fruit' is fruit cocktail. Out of a jar. I kid you not. It doesn't take a genius to recognize fruit cocktail, only someone who ate a metric buttload of it as a kid. Seriously... an $18 entree using fruit cocktail... I would be very remiss if I didn't ding them for this. The cream sauce tasted good though I have to admit it wasn't as good as at Empress (hardly the most authentic place in town) or at Wegman's even. I ate and enjoyed it but couldn't get past the fruit cocktail. I mean seriously, cut up some fresh pineapple, will ya? Our total bill for 2 ended up over $50, a lot more than we normally spend on a good Chinese meal. (In fact, back in Houston you tended to pay MORE for a suburban mediocre Chinese meal than a good one in Chinatown). That said, the restaurant is maintained very well and doesn't look like a 'hole in the wall' so I think they're going for the Chinese version of fine dining... but then I come back to the fruit cocktail. You can't have it both ways, my friends! I will go back again and try some other dishes. If they can serve up some other good dishes like the lamb with cumin sauce that I can't get anywhere else and avoid the use of children's lunchbox snacks in the recipes then I can justify occasionally spending a pretty penny on Chinese food. But if the lamb ends up being the exception rather then the rule I would skip it and try someplace else. I don't get to that side of town often, but I'll let y'all know the verdict when I do (and change my rating accordingly if need be). read more

This is a must-do for our family when we visit Dallas. Our kids get excited just hearing the name Jeng Chi. The xiao long baos are not quit as good as what you would get in DingTaiFeng in Taiwan or China, but it's as good as it gets here in Texas. Service has always been fantastic for us.
