Karaoke was SO much fun! Food was great and the drinks kept on coming. I love the second floor when small bands play. It's intimate and super cozy. Service was great! The only thing I forgot about was the smoking allowed in the first floor. I came home smelling like a smoke stack. I wish that wasn't allowed, but I know many people enjoy it and I wouldn't want to take away their happiness after a hard week of work. My boyfriend and I went here just for lunch on a Monday. It is very clearly a bar- the entire place smelled very strongly of cigarette, and it's incredibly dark inside (you can tell by how dark the photo of the food was), but again, it is a tavern, so those are typical characteristics for it. If you can get past the strong cigarette smell, the food is absolutely delicious, and the Tavern Burger is one of the better burgers I've had. The bun is sweet and fluffy, and adds such a great taste to the well-seasoned burger patty and fixings. The fries were great, too, and overall, the food was cheap and worth the initial repulsion to the strong cigarette smell. Our server was kind and checked in on us promptly, so overall, great food and a great experience. read more

This is my favorite dive bar in all of DFW. This is a smoking bar so please keep that in mind. You will go home smelling like a cigarette. The drinks are CHEAP the food is SO GOOD. Hands down the best dive bar in Dallas. Best food I have ever had in a bar hands down. Drinks are always ice cold. Staff is friendly and make you feel like you've been coming in for years even in your first day. And yes, it's a smoker-friendly bar, which just makes it more authentic. We are local Garland residents who visit downtown Garland often. This trip we decided to check out this corner bar on the square we visited years before. It had changed a bit, but for the better! It is a hole in the wall but the service is great, the music is good and it has a diverse crowd. It's a small bar where it seems a lot of people know each other. We visited on a Friday night and there was a DJ. Check out this dive if you're in downtown Garland. It closes earlier than Dallas bars-12:00 but that's not necessarily a bad thing. We are keeping it on our list of regular hang out places! read more

We like to go here on Thursday evenings to watch the music upstairs (Jerry Don Branch, great blues rock). Because the small upstairs bar area gets crowded early, we get there by 6 pm to get a seat for the ~7 pm show. We usually end up eating there as a result. The food is typical bar food. It's good for what it is (burgers, sandwiches, grilled chicken, salad, fries, onion rings, etc.). They have a decent variety of beer and drinks. The bar staff/waitstaff are very friendly, and though the crowd usually consists of the same group of people each time, they easily accept newcomers. To put it most simply, it's a fun place to spend a Thursday night if you like live music. read more

Thankfully in the past 7 years the new owner has gone above trying to bring back the "haydays" while still holding true to the regulars that have been coming here from decades to months. It is a Cheers atmosphere. The curly hair bartender is a bitch, but a sweet one who tries to include everyone and does her job single-handedly on football Sundays better than 3 servers at others. The only the problem is the location from the Richardson jail which sometimes (rarely though) invites douchebags that just got released after posting bail for the charges of sodomy of a chicken, or so Travis told me when he was up here the other day. Ironically I just came to realize I've never left a review for Tavern, so this is long over due. I first visited the Tavern around August 2016, I had got an Airbnb for the night & they suggested trying this place. Upon entering I immediately thought to myself I am in the wrong spot, but whatever I'll give it a shot anyways plus when you check-in you get a free appetizer. I got an order of wings & ordered a Tequila Sunrise, it was pretty nice & strong. I sat next to a regular lady who was very warming & we talked throughout my visit. I stayed for maybe an hour or 2 then left. 2nd visit (Oct 2016 maybe?): I had told my roommate at the time about the place & said we could go there to get a stiff quick drink, grab a bite then head to our next spot. Unfortunately, the woman bartender we had was NOT heavy handy & we drank our drinks like water. I didn't see the bartender I had last time so we decided to leave. So let me start by saying this, The food was incredible. Best bar food I've ever had. However, We came in right when they opened. And there were 2 waitresses at the end of the bar wis far which is right where you come in. Who totally ignored And we had to ask how the seething worked. To be honest they seemed irritated to answer our question. We sat at the bar and got a completely different experience. The bartender was in the weeds but yet he was very attentive and very nice. We did ask him to come down and refill our beer for once but that's OK. I will also add that this is a bar where you can smoke which I think is wonderful even though I do not. So if that offends you please don't go here. You will be offended. All others who want an incredible meal at a great price, I would suggest you patronize this business. read more

The music over rides the air, but sometimes it is strong which is not good for fans with no tolerance for second hand smoke. Which btw I cannot stand second hand smoke, but the Dallas All Stars with Buddy Whittington and Guitar Slim. Strong drinks, attentive floor/bar services - never sampled the food. There's nothing much worse than an owner who likes to brag about their establishment. After standing for 4 1/2 hours at a concert then driving from downtown Dallas, we just wanted to sit down, have a quiet drink, and relax. Instead I got the owner who told us 3 times that we need to try the food (never mind the kitchen closed 2 hours prior to our arrival), several times we need to come on Thursday nights. and they're "far beyond that" in reference to us reminiscing about the old days 20+ years ago when we used to live in Richardson. I did say that I probably still have a free appetizer on the yelp app and he seemed to gladly tell me they don't do that any more. Well, pfft then. The only saving grace was Jessica who was attentive and made sure we had a drink in front of us. Just a hint for any restaurant or bar owner, let the place speak for itself. If you're so desperate to try and sell, I'm not likely to buy. There's tons of unassuming bars in the area. Just be a nice unassuming bar. read more
