I've been here 4-5 times. If you come on the weekend, expect atleast a 30 min wait. I always come for their soup dumplings. I've tried every single one, but you have to try their pork and crab soup dumplings. I do wish it was filled with just a bit more broth, but the flavor of the mixed meats make up for it. Some days, the meat is just a tad bland, but I just dip it in the sauce. Their price and portion ratio knocks this restaurant down to a four star. Came looking for another place to try xiaolongbao aka soup dumplings. We ordered two and they both came out together. I should have coursed it out because by the time we got to the second batch, all the soup had like evaporated. The soup dumplings were ok... I wouldn't recommend driving out of your way to eat here. I felt they steamed the dumplings much longer than needed. The filling was so hot even after letting it cool for 10 mins. There wasn't either not enough soup in it in the first place or it was steamed too long where a lot of the soup evaporated... We also ordered the tendon noodle soup. The broth was bland and oily! We are asians and we did the most white person thing ever- add soy sauce! There was just no flavor. Our server was this very very nice and polite gentleman. We didn't complain but the lady sitting at the table next to us did. She ordered a diff type of noodle soup and complained to him that her soup was bland. In the politest voice possible, he calmly told her that it's how Chinese people like their soups --very light. He went on to tell her that Chinese people don't like a lot of saltiness and that's why they are healthy and promote a long life. I had to laugh bc he was so ignorantly polite about it. Lastly, we ordered the white bass special which was a hefty cost at $20. It was good but the price didn't match up with the fish... Maybe I would pay that price for a higher quality fish. Most authentic, Northern Chinese food I've had in the DFW area. If you're looking for orange chicken or Panda Express type Chinese food, this isn't the place for you. I highly recommend the soup dumplings (pour vinegar and hot sauce with the ginger slices) green onion pancakes, pig ears (sounds creepy but give it a try), and the noodle with ground pork sauce. The stir fried rice cake with beef isn't on the menu but you can still order it! Been coming here since I was a little kid and I have to admit I was really sad when they revamped the place. It used to be like a mama and papa's place. But now the environment, decor, and menu have been changed to be more appealing and friendlier to non-Asians. Now there's a little bakery at the front of the restaurant and the kitchen is visible to the customers. The place is very clean with some Chinese decor on the walls. Service is attentive and they use iPhones to take orders. Basically, I love this place. After you're done, go to May's Ice Cream (2 stores away) and get yourself some shaved ice. read more

This place is the real deal. The location is awesome in a little china town(visit the bakery and the grocery store too) in Richardson. The best compliment I can give this place is that it tasted REAL. Nothing was "mushy" nothing tasted like it was packed with "MSG" just tasted real and authentic. If I'm ever craving dumplings, Jeng Chi is my place to go. It used to be a tiny restaurant closer to the side of Tap House but they did well so now they have a giant place! Good for them, they did well! The only thing I don't like about their new place is that they seem to cater to more american tastes than before. The only reason to come here is for the juicy dumplings. They come in batches of 8. Be cautious when you first get them because they can be a little hot. Make sure when taking them off the paper inside the steamer, you don't rip a hole in the dumpling so the soup inside doesn't come out. Carefully peel the dumplings off the paper with either a chopstick or your hands(don't use a fork, you'll pierce the skin!) You must eat this in one bite! That's why you should be cautious so you don't burn your mouth. I think I burn my mouth every time I come here because I'm impatient to eat the dumplings! 2 friends and I came here last and ordered 3 orders of the juicy dumplings, sesame sweet and sour chicken, and the green beans with minced pork. A pricey lunch(we split all the food) but was well worth it. We were all stuffed at the end of our meal. I believe I ended up paying around $15 including tip. Boy was this place a solid choice. We had a craving for dumplings and although the wait was 45 minutes, it was definitely worth it! The service was just right: our waiter was attentive without being intrusive and was very friendly. Food showed up in a timely fashion and he did a nice job of making sure we didn't get overwhelmed with everything coming at once (this is a tough skill, as I understand it). If you want a thorough menu with something for every pallet, Jeng Chi won't disappoint. One suggestion for the management: install a heater over the front door or construct a second temporary threshold door. Every time people enter or exit, the entire front half of the restaurant (including the bar) gets annihilated with the outside air. This really stinks if you're sitting in the bar for 45 minutes and are being hit with the cold outside air every 15 seconds. read more

We had the pancake, sao long boa, and eggplant with garlic. The pancake with scallions was very bland. It was just fried dough, hardly any flavor. The sao long bao (soup dumplings) was better than other places who claim they can make them. At least theirs had soup in it and stayed in it. Most other places claim there's soup in it, but once you eat it, all the soup has been drained out. The eggplant with garlic was probably the best dish but it was super oily! I've been going to this place for at least 15 years now. My friends and I used to go just for the juicy dumplings (小籠包), and we used to order huge stacks of them for the table! My fondest memory of the place was when the old man who was the owner would give me a chocolate bar every time my family checked out at the register. In the recent years, they've changed their restaurant a lot and kind of lost their authentic Chinese feel along the way--first they expanded and remodeled their old location, and then they moved into a new HUGE space. I'm still not used to how big and spacious their space is now and amazed that they even have a waitlist building up on weekend nights. But, some of the food is just as good as I remember it from years ago. First off, a meal here doesn't feel complete without an order (or two) of the scallion pancakes. They're so flaky, doughy, flavorful, and crispy. My favorite. And of course you have to order the juicy dumplings too--I'd say they're the best in Dallas, hands down. Some other delicious items include the potstickers, beef noodle soup, and the noodles with bean sauce. Xio long bao- it was good, but I've had better at another Dallas restaurant off Royal/Preston Rd. But Jeng Chi's xio long bao is bigger in size. This alone, it would be 3 stars. It's steamed on a banana leaf, so when it gets stuck, try to take it off the leaf too hard, the skin of the dumpling breaks and the "soup" leaks out. The dumpling itself didn't have much flavor to it, especially the soup. 4 stars because of their egg tart. I've been searching far and wide in the DFW area for egg tarts, and this place right here makes the BEST one thus far. The crust isn't too thick. The egg custard has that aroma/taste that I've been looking for. I would definitely make the 45 minute drive out here on a weekend just for their egg tarts alone! The menu is super extensive, try new things each time-- it's worth it. They have all the regular Chinese fare. My favorite dish is the soup dumplings but I'm also a sucker for the mapo tofu and the green onion pancakes. I could come here everyday and not get sick of it. Any visitor should order the xiao long bao, of course, which is one of the best in Dallas. The hot & sour soup is a favorite of mine, along with the mapo tofu. My go to are always, always: green onion pancake, small juicy dumplings, potstickers, and some stir-fried dish (usually a function of my dining companion, but often the spicy chicken, or the mustard green with pork). There are items that will definitely expand the typical western palate a bit (I mean that in the best way). Great soups, too. Mostly same waitstaff, as I recall, since they opened. This is a reunion place for me -- invariably, I run into at least 3-4 I used to work with. Fun place for Chinese New Year! Very good Chinese food. Their juicy dumplings are very flavorful. The only downside here is they aren't your traditional soup dumplings, but there is some juice inside that makes it close. My next favorite thing is the Dan Dan Noodles, and also the green onion pancake. The pancake is thick and has good green onion flavor to it. The service is also good, and the inside is very clean. I've been eating at Jeng Chi since it was a quaint hole in the wall a few doors down from it's current location. Their juicy steamed dumplings and green onion pancakes are still some of my favorite things to order. The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is for their extremely rude bartender. My cousin and I sat at the bar while waiting for our table. She ordered a drink and I ordered a water. The bartender kept asking if I would like a "Tawainese" water. We couldn't tell whether or not he was being rude, and when we asked him to clarify what he meant, he said "exactly" and walked away to take care of the white guests sitting at the bar. Luckily our table was ready as we were already feeling uncomfortable. My cousin asked the bartender if she could take her drink to the table, to which he loudly yelled, "Yes! you can take your drink to the table." At this point, we were both fed up with his attitude as he was being unpleasant for no reason. She paid her tab and didn't leave a tip, to which he loudly scoffed at. The whole interaction was awkward and weird. We expressed our concern to Mai at the front, but her apologies for his behavior seemed insincere. She also told us that other customers have complained about his attitude, which begs the question, why are they still employing someone who disrespects their customers? read more

Finally tried this place with my fiancé and we love dumplings so maybe it was a bad idea coming here overly hungry since we ended up wanting to try everything therefore ordering way more than we could've ate. We tried the green onion pancake and leek turnover because of all the great reviews on these two items but these weren't as good as the other items we tried. XLB were delicious and juicy. Be careful when eating them though because the soup is hot and can burn when you bite into them although that was my fault for being way too excited to try them. The other dumplings we got were the shrimp and pork steamed dumplings. Yummy! I think could eat these dumplings all day and the potstickers were tasty but can't really go wrong with potstickers. Also, don't forget about their pastries near the register. I tried the eggtart with the fruits and it's pretty good. Also, they're super cheap! Let's cut to the chase. I came here because I heard they have a dumpling menu. There were hits and misses. Hits: Pan fried dumplings. They were all very decent and sometimes great. I would get these again every time. The scallion pancakes are really good as well, but I wouldn't miss them. Misses: I had the tasty filled buns (I'm not sure if that is the right name, check the picture out below) and they were rather disappointing. I've had these every time I can find it on the menu in a Chinese restaurant and these are subpar in terms of tastiness. They also looked kinda sad, but I could deal with that. I also had the combination fried noodles, also disappointing as it did not carry very much taste. Conclusion: Basically this is just an average authentic Chinese restaurant. I'm not sure I would return again just for dumplings, since pan fried dumplings are pretty easy to get elsewhere, but I wouldn't complain if I did - I would just get something else considering the big ass menu. read more

Have you ever been to a restaurant, where before you even finished the food and paid your bills, you are already thinking about when is the next time you'll return to have sometime else delicious on the menu? Well this will be THAT restaurant! We had some delicious dumplings pan fried with juicy soup lamb dumplings and dan dan noodles . I can not wait to return again soon. Service was attentive and quick . One of the things about this restaurant that sets it above average is the Nice Bathroom. This place has a changing table (unlike some Asian restaurants) , toilet seat liners , and the stall doors open outward so you're not forced to squeeze behind the toilet just to let yourself out the stall . We didn't get desserts because we were trying to catch a movie but it's convenient to have pastries for sale and 85 *c next door if you want some sweets after dinner. read more

Dumpling Heaven :P Jamie and I ate here today upon the advise of a Chinese restaurant community insider I work with (thanks, Christy) today. It is the best dumpling place I have ever eaten, period. If there's any doubt about freshness, they have two ladies hand wrapping dumplings non-stop, just behind the glassed in prep area in the back of the cavernous, clean space :P It also has a full Chinese menu of other goodies that I look forward to exploring on future visits. Today, we ate: - potstickers: one of the few pan fried dumplings on the menu (most are steamed or fried), these little pockets of goodness were perfectly prepared to toothsome perfection, with just the right chew factor on the skin. Filling was porky with overtones of fresh ginger, excellent. - steamed pork and shrimp dumplings: these bad boys had a spinach wrapping (color me surprised :-o ), pictured in the foreground in my profile pic. What they lacked in exterior crunch, they made up for in moist flavorful filling, delightful little pillowy bites of heaven. - seaweed salad: this dish served as a nice cool/fresh foil to cleanse the palate between dumpling plunges. An unusual version, it also had strips of tofu and mushroom tossed in the mix, a surprisingly complex rendition of a typically simple dish Next time back, I will try the green onion pancake (reported to have a high crunch factor, a must with every meal), and will take a chance on some other items that speak to me at the time. Also, to enhance your overall experience, there is a bubble tea house a few doors to the north, which I highly recommend visiting before or after dining at Jeng Chi. I am a big fan of the vietnamese milk bubble coffee-tea (called something different at every different establishment, curiously), extra nice on ice in the summertime, el yummo. Next time you find yourself in east Richardson, in the general vicinity of Greenville and Arapahoe, I recommend you treat yourself to the Jeng Chi experience. We have been coming to this restaurant regularly now so I have to give it a review. It is on our main list of places to go to for Chinese food. They have pretty good xiolongbao, I think this their signature dish, which is pretty good for Dallas standards. They have a number of noodle dishes which I tried but I'm not a super big fan of. I would suggest any of their pan fried dishes, standard meat dishes and steamed dumpling dishes. The food is pretty fresh and their is an open kitchen where you can see the dough being rolled. The decor and facilities are pretty modern and clean. I guess that's why we keep coming back. read more
