On the last stretch of Hana Highway, just before you hit the state park, you will come across a series of unassuming small shops. As we found with our visit, despite the rundown look to some, it is definitely worth a stop. After perusing some of the other shops (grabbed some awesome baked coconut candy!) initially although Jen's food looked quite good, I was holding out to get my greasy spoon fix in at the shrimp truck back in Kahului. However, as we climbed into the car, the delicious smell emanating from the shack was just too much to overcome. So we climbed back out and grabbed some delicious shrimp pad Thai. As you can expect the operation is pretty no-frills. However, nothing helps to cap off a long day of winding through the Hana Highway like some greasy spoon Thai food. As for the food itself, it was pretty delicious and the shrimp were fresh and tasty. So take a stop at Jen's to stretch your legs and get your Thai fix in. read more

The best shrimp pad Thai around... my wife and I were on the road to Hana and saw this place was the last stand open. Although 'closed' Jen was so accommodating to me and 3 other couples/families that came after closing time. I haven't had pad Thai in Thailand (yet), growing up in Los Angeles eating in Thai town, Alhambra/Monterey park china towns, San Francisco/Manhattan china towns... I honestly was not expecting this to be as good as it was. There was only one other table of people there who were finishing up. Most of the other little shops around were closed, and there was no more coconut candy. I'm glad we decided to stay and eat here anyway. They don't sell drinks here, so you actually have to walk a couple of stands down to a little coffee shop/market and get something. They had a lot of interesting local drinks. I got some Aloha Maid Natural Passion Orange Juice that said it was from Hawaii and didn't have corn syrup in it. It was quite tasty. It took about ten minutes for our food to come out. You eat outside on picnic tables. It's a covered area that's nice and shady. My husband and I both got the special for the day which was a red curry with fresh fish. It was a little spicy and had plenty of veggies in it. The curry sauce was very flavorful, and way better than most I get on the east coast. The portion was a good size too. I would stop here again on the road to Hana. I'd like to try some of the other dishes here, and maybe next time I'll be lucky and there will be coconut candy next door. read more

IMO, the best option among all the Nahiku Marketplace food trucks. Granted, there are not too many options, but you can't go wrong here. The prices are fair and portions are generous. Jen is the one-woman show behind this food truck. The menu is simple: choice of protein and choice of carb (or papaya salad) We ordered the papaya salad and pad thai w/ beef. I was impressed by how fresh everything was! Jen was literally chopping up the papaya right before serving it to me. Overall, a surprisingly delightful find on our way to Hana. read more

I rarely give a one star review but this definitely deserves it. We stopped here on our way back from Hana. 9 people ordered food from the girl behind the counter (not sure if it was Jenn). We had mostly pad thai, chow fun and curry. The food was ok. However my friend the pad thai with beef and ahi. She was told that she could order that with an upcharge which she happily paid. However she got beef and shrimp instead. She politely pointed out the mistake and patiently waited for it to be remade. When it was remade it did not taste anything like the thai dishes that others in our party was eating. We suspect because it was rushed. She pointed this out to the girl at the counter. My friend was willing to take back the shrimp/beef pad thai. However at this point the girl at the counter said that she can't be ever be happy because she's "too picky." When I pointed out that this was rude. She yelled to our party get the F******K out. Mind you this was in front of other family and children. We were horrified. Horrible service and unbelievable rude person. We would never come back here again. read more

Stopped by for some Thai food on the way back from road to Hana. This definitely hit the home run after an entire day of winding up and down roads. The chow fun was good but not spectacular. And I asked what time she's going to open, because she said 10 mins before. And she suddenly became angry and yelled at me in front of everyone: I didn't give a shit on u. It's my stand and I can open whenever I want! F**k ... She's super rude and totally ruined my day. read more

Came here with my travel buddy, smelling the delicious food and simply asked "what is the most popular dish here?" The person running the stall then proceeded to give us this nasty stink eye and then with no smile or acknowledgment of our patronage and just told us dryly "everything is good here." SURE. OK. So we order one PadThai with pork because that's usually always a safe bet. Was it good? No. Decent? No. If you're gonna be rude, at least have good food. The noodles tasted as though they weren't washed or cleaned properly, the tamarind flavors weren't properly caramelized and the pork was dry and bland. In fact, everything was a bland watery mess. So, I'm just a tourist here visiting and all, but nonetheless this person set up business here and expects to make a profit off of the gajillion other tourists who are driving through Hana. We were simply asking the chef's recommendation and don't think we deserved that kind of treatment. Do yourself a favor and wait for the Island Chef. read more

A quick warning, this place is literally just a woman and a wok, doing her best. This may entail a long wait as she makes each dish one at a time. I come from Los Angeles. If it's one thing LA does well, it's Thai food. So I am both happy and disappointed to report that I've found some awesome Thai food. Happy because I found it. Disappointed because you have to go to the middle of the dagnammed rainforest to get it. On the road to Hana (AKA the most beautiful thing ever!), there is very little to eat. Few places to stop, no place to gas up. You are left with the windiest road ever and awesome waterfalls and bamboo forests around every corner. Around Mile Marker 27 you start to desperately want food. Luckily, at around Mile Marker 28, you will come upon a little strip mall comprised entirely of huts and lunch trucks. Near the far end of this weird little shopping center, you'll see Jen's Thai Food. First off, given the location, she could easily charge you $90 for a plate of food. But instead, it's quite reasonable, by Hawaii standards. Jen is there alone, cooking in the great outdoors with a wok, a stove, and a cooler full of ingredients...That's it! I'm going to throw down the gauntlet and say that it was the best pad thai I've ever had. There! I said it! Even with broccoli that was on its last leg, the sauce overwhelmed me and made me deliriously happy as I chowed down with my wife at a picnic table surrounded by eco-tourists and tropical trees. Yeah, I know...A bittersweet situation. But really, SHOULDN'T the best pad thai be in the middle of the rainforest? Shouldn't great stuff be a little hard to get? Based on this precedent, I think the best donut shop should be in Siberia and the best eggplant parmigiana sandwich should be on Bouvet Island. read more

The curry stirfry with shrimp was awesome. Chockfull of red curry paste, lots of freshly cut veggies and 6 big shrimp. The taste is on point and surprisingly good for a shabby place on the road. I docked 1 star only for the speed of service. Yes it is only 1 lady and 2 woks. But the lack of line is deceiving. I waited a solid 20 minutes before getting my food and was dying of hunger. Oh and this stop was the only place open on a Sunday (everything aside from he bigger restaurants were closed in Hana) we tried all the other selection in this location and this was by far the best. read more

Ok, this is the part of my day where I tell you about the absolute best place we ate at during our entire vacation in Maui. I wasn't able to check in here because it pretty much sits in the middle of nowhere along the Road to Hana. Otherwise, I would probably make it my goal in life to become the Duke of this place on Yelp. We spied it on our drive to Hana and made a mental note to stop there on the way back. Here's the play-by-play: You pull into the parking lot and see what appears to be a slightly run-down set of shops. The fish taco place is closed. The porta-potties around the back remind you that running water is probably not a luxury here. A tall, thin man is propped against the counter helping a young girl draw pictures with crayons. He greets you with a smile and takes your order. Cash only. He leans over to Jen and gives her our orders in what sounds like perfect Thai. I can only guess that it was perfect, because I obviously don't speak the language. But it was perfect to me. We have a seat and watch as Jen begins slicing all the vegetables, mixing all the sauces, cooking all the noodles right there. She flicks a button on her iPod to change the song and moves with the rhythm as she tosses bottles in the air from one hand to the other, splashes a spoonful of spice across the counter into the pan, makes food preparation seem like the most musical thing on this tiny dot in middle of the ocean. And since I ordered tofu pad thai, she walks over to our table and asks if I'm a vegetarian. I say yes and she makes a mental note to exclude the fish sauce from my meal. Awesome! When it's all ready, our heaping plates are filled with the best thai food I have ever eaten in my life. She suggests that if I have a thing for spice that I should try her mom's "Crazy Spice" directly from Thailand. Of course I try it. How could I not try it? It's crazy spice from Thailand! And it was so good! So hot! So yummy! I'm sweating a little bit, but I don't care. We are in f#@%ing Maui! If you are on the Road to Hana, eat here. Do not eat elsewhere. I have had excellent Thai all over the world and would say my standards are pretty high. We discovered this place, as it was recommended by our sever at our hotel. We were definitely not disappointed! We had the pad Thai and it was phenomenal! It took about 15 minutes but it was so worth it. So fresh, bright veggies and excellent beef. Honeymooning in Hana, we stumbled upon the street signs you can't miss for "THAI FOOD". The food was some of the BEST Thai food we've had. Hubs ordered the fresh Mahimahi Panang Curry special. It had a kick! Amazing value for the cost. Needing something a little safe and starchy after the rollercoaster ride of a drive and my husbands wreckless driving -- I went with the "ordinary" Chicken Pad Thai though there was not ordinary about it. Pad Thai is pad thai is pad thai, right? Wrong! The flavor was so fresh and left a lasting impression on us. Spring rolls and the Thai iced tea were more than we needed to top off the meal but we dug deep and savored every bite! Great personable service and a cozy, covered outdoor dining nook. If you are on the way to hana, and need to stop for lunch, this is a good place. There are also other shops nearby so a good place for everyone to find something to eat. I really liked this place coz chef jen makes the dishes fresh. I would recommend this place especially if you are vegetarian. I ordered pad thai with tofu and veggies. It was delicious and tofu was fresh and soft. There are other thai options as well like red curry, spicy basil fried rice and so forth. You also get to choose the kind of meat or veggie option you want. It's amazing the choices you have in such a tiny place. There are benches to sit outside and eat. You can also find restroom. We spent nine days on Maui and ate three Thai meals at various restaurants. This was by far the best Thai food we had and the best food of our entire trip. I ordered pad Thai with shrimp and my wife ordered Mahi Mahi Ginger stir fry. We only had enough cash (cash only operation) for one order or both but Pad Thai without the shrimp, so I asked for it without shrimp. When she brought our order to the table it had a couple of shrimp anyway! Such a nice surprise. Both dishes were fantastic. The pad Thai wasn't overly sweet like many Thai places and the Mahi Mahi was spicy and flavorful. It was only one woman (Jen I am guessing) working on two gas burners with her prepared mise en place in coolers behind her. She had orders coming up ever few minutes. Probably the best chicken pad Thai I've ever tried. And I'm a very fussy eater. My partner enjoyed the combination fried rice also. As devine as eating at Island Chef next door, Jen's Thai Food was exquisitely good. I had the pork larb (served over white rice) and Thai chicken fried rice. They were both prepared with the freshest ingredients chopped right in front of you. Both dishes tasted amazingly good! This could be the best Thai food that I've ever tasted -at least for the two dishes that I ordered. I only wish Jen's Thai was located closer to Paia so we can return for her food. We were staying in Hana for a few weeks and decided to travel back and try out some of the local food. Jen and Tina make a mean curry and pad thai. Good food. Limited dining options on Hana Highway. My husband and I pulled in at about 5pm (which turned out to be just in time-this place closes early) because we hadn't eaten since that morning in Lahaina and we were getting pretty hungry. We thought we would get a snack to hold us over until we got to Travaasa in Hana and ended up eating a full dinner because everything just looked too good to pass up. Shrimp Pad Thai, Pork Green Curry and 4 Spring Rolls later we could barely move. Everything had the perfect amount of spice, and was piping hot, made to order and delicious. It is REALLY no frills here; picnic tables, plastic table cloths, two electric woks, 10 dishes on the menu and a hipster wrapping up Spring Rolls. Just did the trip to Hana today and this place was off the hook! It's on the road to Hana at the Nahiku Marketplace a little bit before Hana. There's a bunch of food stands there and the others are OK, but this was amazing Thai food. Had the Pad Thai and Chicken Panang Curry and got a heap of delicious food for really reasonable price. Great little gem. Right off the road but a good drive while on the road to Hana. Food was prepared upon ordering and seemed fresh. It is a food truck but I wouldn't let that keep you away. Food took about 10 minutes after ordering and the lines did grow after I ordered so be prepared to wait 10-25 minutes. read more
