I found mention of Todd Hannah and The Oregon Angler on a site somewhere and I gave them a shot. Todd, was amazingly helpful at putting together the perfect trip for my wife and I. He was easy to get a hold of and walked us through everything as we weren't from the area. The trip was great. We were mid summer so the small mouth fishing on ultra light tackle was our best option. The action was non-stop and the weather was amazing. We were on the water for a shorter trip at about 5 hours. We had so much fun the time flew by. We saw beautiful scenery and wildlife. Defiantly a must do on any trip through this area.

Now I get seasick REALLY easily, and I've avoided offshore fishing for a long time. After failing to go fishing in Fort Bragg, I started looking into land based opportunities in Coos Bay at the local tackle shop, and while there they told me about Capt. John and the Compass Rose. I started chatting with Captain John and he was understanding of my situation but super reassuring, and by the end of the day I was looking forward to going on an AM trip the next morning. Sadly that plan was foiled by a sick kid, but Capt. John is great at updating his social media and I caught the very successful morning report (2 hours and limited out - totally flat seas) and I made the call to jump on in the afternoon hoping to find the same slick calm seas. NOW... Capt. John and his mate put us on the fish! We limited out on rockfish within two or three drifts. We fished long leaders on electric reels baited with teasers and squid. It did the trick and each drop we'd get 2-3 fish on average, many larger too. From there we went to the crab pots and each of those was stacked too! Limits all around and a nice experience! BUT... Seas were a solid 4-6ft that day, by my estimate, and to no fault of the captain, all but one fishing on the boat was over the side at points during the trip. Now the Compass Rose is a nice boat. Nice new fishing gear. New electronics. Newer and smooth running motors. Suspension ride seats in the cabin. Space for 6 fishing, captain and a mate. I have no doubt under certain circumstances this boat is a nice ride and a pleasure to be on, but this day the seas had another plan and no amount of niceties would help. I still had a blast and would recommend hiring Capt. John to get you out when you're in the area!

You can choose from guided tour to self guided which is what I recommend if you're somewhat familiar with the dunes; from any state. If you're new to dune riding, might want to get the guided tour or play it safe and ride slow. The dunes can have drop-offs or be too steep going up and you need to know how to navigate. We opted for the 2-hour self guided tour in a 4-seater with awesome power. Didn't get stuck at all and plenty of time to go to the beach twice and run from east to west of the entire dunes. Checking in was easier than I thought as most forms and videos are done prior online. Got our safety brief of where to go and where not to go, speed limits, and then how to call for help. Don't show up in crocs or open toed shoes as you'll need to be protected. The deposit of the vehicle is quickly returned to your card after you're done riding, as long as there's no damage. Professional staff and quick to get you out riding. Arrive 30 minutes prior to your time so you can ensure everything is done and you're ready to ride!

Fun starts in the sand!…read more What an effing fun place to go dune buggy riding! They don't take reservations, but I highly recommend that you get there as early as possible. Park, head inside to buy your tickets, then write your name on the board outside near the waiting area. The guys will pull up in the buggy's, you'll climb on in, and away you go! 45/60 mins of twists, turns, and flying through the sand dunes along the beach. It doesn't get any better than this! Taking pictures is close to impossible, and you'll want to live in the moment. Wear clothes and shoes that you're comfy in. On rainy days, make sure you wear something that you don't mind getting slightly dirty. Did I mention how fun this is?? If YKYK. If you don't, this should be a must try. Just do it!
