Here's the bottom line - the jerk chicken is NOT real jerk chicken. It's baked BBQ chicken with a hint of spice at best. Went to the Mall of America and decided to try this spot out. Here's my thoughts: First order of business - True foodies would know that jerk has a dry rub earthy flavor and seasoning that is unique and cannot be imitated. . The jerk I got here was delicious but far from authentic. It was soft, wet and definitely not grilled - which once again highlights inauthenticity. The jerk chicken burger was also really good but didn't not carry any characteristics of true jerk flavored chicken. The seasoning wasn't there nor the texture. The rice and beans were good and but nothing completes the meal like true jerk chicken. Now if we wanna talk about authentic, then I HIGHLY recommend their beef patties. I've been going to Jerk King since they opened a few years ago. Best tasting Jamaican food in Minnesota. The jerk chicken was moist and tender. The mixed veggies were excellent. They even had callilou in the veggies. The plantains weren't cooked down enough for me but still tasted good. The rice was soft and really good. I will be back. This mall has so many places to choose from This spot looked good but I wanted to know how many oxtails would I get for $20? Doesn't hurt to ask right ? The employee said 4-5 depending on the size. I'm glad I diverted to this place instead of where I was going. Thanks for using chicken thighs for your jerked chicken. The dark meat was a great balance to the hotter spicy flavors of the sauce. Well Jerk King, in a food court nonetheless, has stolen our hearts. This is absolutely the real thing, no holds barred. Pimento is good, but they do cater to the Eat Street crowd. Get the Curry Goat Roti. You'll taste palm trees and blue ocean. Hmmm judging from the other reviews it looks like they may have a consistency problem. Well the 3x we went it was good every time. Upon inspecting the selections on display in the steam table, I wasn't too excited by the looks of the chicken or the wings. However they also had oxtail that is stewed in a jerk sauce. I have three reasons why this is a 5-star review. My first and possibly most important note for this place is that you will easily feed 2+ people with the surprisingly large portions they serve. You will not walk away from a meal at Jerk King still hungry. Definitely won't be able to walk away quickly. Next, the excellent lovely ladies behind the counter were just like they were serving up food for guests at home. Smiles and warmth, making sure I felt welcome and taken care of. Last but certainly certainly not least, the wave of flavors. All Caribbean smells, flavors, spices, and hearty heat are present and accounted for. I was hoping to speak with the owners/manager about my experience before going online but I wasn't able to find the contact. I am giving a low review because of the inconsistency and rudeness from the staff. Last night 5/31 I went for my usual oxtail. The lady serving was giving a well rounded variety of oxtail pieces to make a nice plate. Couple people were ahead of me. I stopped going to this location because the girl that usually is their serving gives four pieces of meat and I don't think it's worth it for the $20 plus meal that they're charging. I tried to talk to her about it in the past and I got nothing but attitude and I actually had to walk away from a meal. So when I saw the other girl serving today, I thought I would receive a plate that is worthy of the price only for it to be my turn and the other lady comes out from the back to serve me. I wanted to ask if the other lady could serve me, but didn't want to cause an issue I thought maybe this time she would do a better serving because the two people before me got served a decent plate...I was wrong. She served me four pieces of meat, and I tried to tell her that I do not like how my plate is served. She acted like she didn't understand English. I tried to speak to the other lady about it. She gave me nothing but attitude and told me I should've said something earlier and that they're two different people with a snarky attitude so I ended up walking away from the food. I no longer recommend this place. The food isn't that good for me to be treated with such a disrespect when you're a paying customer and that food is not cheap. How can you give two people before me an abundance of meat and me just 4 pieces. Not consistent and honestly I was still going to buy the food but after she acted aggressive I said forget it and walked away. As a chef and a small business owner I love ox tail and this spot is the real deal not only authentic, but also the person that helped me was amazing and also someone from the Caribbean herself so it was really cool experience. OMG it's freaking good. The combination of spice, sweet, seasoning , tenderness, . It's an explosion of flavor then that spicy sauce kicks in. Almost feels like that sour patch kid commercial lol. At first it's sweet and then boom!!! That heat hits you. It's not unbearably hot though. Well not to me anyway. I have some cajun genes so my tastebuds are not the norm. Welp, what can I say about this place??? Hmm... Well I heard it was open and I was waiting to try it and review it. Well, underwhelming it was. From a distance it looked ok. I ordered the Jerk roti. Roti right?.... I didn't know this was a Mexican fusion place... (Sarcasm) anywhere else I have been that served a roti type wrap meal the roti is large and soft and delicious. Naw not this here they tried it buddy. First off those are flour tortillas ma'am why are you playing? She went in the back as if the cook was back there making roti.. dude just threw two regular thin sad flour tortillas on a griddle and charred them a little. Bruh. The lady came out and was like "The roti will be on the side is that ok?" I'm like "sure I guess.." That was odd because it's a wrap hmm. I asked the lady if there was a side or anything that came with it? She said no. But I could order a side. Ok so I ordered rice and peas and asked if I could have some oxtail gravy over the rice and peas. She obliged nicely. When I got home I opened it and saw that there were two jerk thighs (average sized) and then the side of rice and peas. Soo I'm looking under the chicken like did she hide something under there? That was it? If I hadn't asked for some rice and peas it would have just been two thighs and two "flour tortillas"? Bruh? For thirteen dollars and some change? You have GOT to be kidding me right now!! Remember I ordered the rice and peas separately. Smh. This is laughable. The rice and peas were nothing to sing about average at best. The "sauce" on the chicken was like an oddly sweet kind of bbq sauce. I would not call it jerk though. I know I won't be back again. Their online address is wrong if you google. Walking around the Mall of America was no joke. I got the 8 piece fried jerk wings with a beef patty and small lemonade. It came to $18 and change. I couldn't wait to get home to more then disappointed. Where's the jerk sauce on my chicken wasn't friend hard. It was fatty and no spice whatsoever. I gave it to my dog. It also came with fries. I've been looking for a place with good oxtails and they are huge! Good flavors and quick friendly service, I'll be back.
