My partner and I went for the first time for our Anniversary dinner. The waiter was friendly and offered suggestions and tastes of two craft beers. The brambleberry ale is delicious! The food menu offered variety and our meals were diversified with flavors complimenting each other well with sweet and savory. The portions were generous. My mom got me a gift certificate for Christmas, and I finally got around to using it last Sunday. The boyfriend and I showed up a little before 12 and the place was packed. They didn't have any tables, but the bar was free so we took a seat. Then we waited and waited some more. After about 10 minutes of no one even stepping foot behind the bar, my boyfriend talked to a passing server and then someone did come to wait on us. Once we got a server, she was very friendly and helpful. I got the flank steak sandwich and he got the shepherd's pie. The shepherd's pie was huge and he said it was amazing. The steak sandwich was quite good as well. It came with sweet potato fries which I normally do not care for, but these had an interesting spice mixture on them and were better than any I have had before. They have an insane amount of Belgian beers, so we had to try some. We looked through the giant binder and each selected one. Now my issue here is that there were no prices. We got beers in the 8-10% ABV range, so we knew they'd be pricey, but it is generally nice to know a price. All total our bill came out to $50 which was exactly the price of the gift certificate. This was purely luck as we had no idea what the beers cost. A bit pricey for lunch, but we both got a second meal out of our leftovers, so all in all it was worth it. We would definitely go back again, but it might be better to have a reservation. read more

This was by far my favorite place to eat while I was home. The historic tavern atmosphere and the staff in period dress really made the experience for me. The food was exquisite as well. We shared bread, skipjack fried shrimp and the seafood soup. Our fingers couldn't get it into our mouths fast enough. My sister ordered a cheeseburger with sweet potato fries with caramel dipping sauce, my brother in law ordered the steak and shrimp and I ordered the chicken pot pie with sweet potato fries and caramel dipping sauce. The crust was cooked perfectly and the chicken on the inside was tender. The dipping sauce was so addictive! I cannot rave enough about how good the service and food was here. I'm also a history buff, so naturally I LOVED the setting. Now it was a little chilly where we were sitting but, keep in mind it is an old building. We got dessert as well. I got the Chocolate Decadence, and my sister got the Cobblestone Cobbler. She couldn't eat all of it, and I basically licked my plate. At this place my diet went up in flames. LOL! This colonial style pub (circa-1724) serves comfort food with staff dressed in that time periods garb. This might be the nicest place in the downtown New Castle area. We were lucky enough to get three spots at the bar on a Saturday night since we were told it was a two hour and fifteen minute wait for a table!!! I tried both of Jessop's brewed beers, and they were fantastic. One had a suggested pairing with, i believe, gouda cheese that complimented each other nicely. I ordered the vegetable panini sandwich since I felt like I had enough meat on Thanksgiving! The perfectly cooked eggplant along with havarti cheese made the sandwich so tasty. My husband ordered the meatloaf entree which was served with lingonberry sauce! This sauce is used more in Scandinavian dishes. It is kind of like a cranberry, but way better. My husband's cousin ordered the pot roast which is a house staple. The meat was nice and tender and the sauce was just right - thickness and seasoning. Unfortunately they are not prepared for the current times. We went there trying to support our local businesses and were sat less than 6 feet from a large table. In a empty dining room we asked to be moved but there were "other reservations" (we also had a reservation). The waitress was not kind or concerned, nor was the manager. We had to pay for food and drinks even though we did not eat?!?! This simply could have been handled far better. It's a shame, we really tried to help one of our favorites survive in these tough times but I can't say we'll ever go back. Can I trust that they understand the precautions that are keeping their customers safe? read more

Great place! Pub fare with lots of great beers, friendly and knowledgeable staff and really unique atmosphere. I had the fish and chips: chrispy batter, tender cod and very tastey. My husband had the Bunkerhill Beef, fantastic. Sweet potato fries are amazing, meat was tender and flavorful and the beef dippy sauce was out if this world. I'm not a big "beef sandwich" fan, but I would order this anytime. Will happily return! read more

I really liked the experience of being here; it was great food and service, and a place I could come regularly to, but also a place to have an experience. While some might think dressing in period clothing is fine what cheesy, I think for my husband and I as new to the region, it helped us to place the area in the larger US context. Being from Mexico, and me from CA, neither of us really grew up with a connection to western/Northern European foods which tend to be more common in many white American homes along the Midwest and eat coast. Even having duck or shepherds pie was foreign to my husband so I'm glad we came here even if it's a bit over the top. read more

My heart belongs w/ their soup. While on our Annual TV Foodie Road Trip NYC-Disney. We exclusively go to restaurants that have been featured on FoodNetwork and/or Travel Channel but apparently neither have ever featured anything in Delaware. Nothing, Nowhere, Nada. What's that all about??? So I had to find something with the help of Yelpers. I'm a big Soup fan, so hen I saw this I said this has to be what we try in Delaware. -the Cheddar, Ale, Jalapeño Soup. Our waitress was so sweet I told her we were gonna share this and she served it in 2 separate crocks. It was so outstanding I wanted to lick the bowl but I was in public sooo. Really spicy and rich but that flavor. I can't wait to come back to this historic unique restaurant and try more from here. Since the soup was so spicy I tried the ice cream next. -A Waffle Cone w/1scoop Maple Walnut and 2nd scoop Dutch Chocolate. Cone was great so was the Maple ice cream but I could only have a few bites since being to full from that rich soup. There a lot of history and siting seeing on this street. Well...this place has become full of strange. It's a mix of townies, people with money trying to be fancy (as if they just discovered the holy grail...even though this place has existed forever before you pulled into town in your Mercedes SUV), and quite an "eclectic" mix of men in the evening around closing time. I remember when Jessops was run by a husband and wife team. Now, it is run by a guy who clearly loves beer. The Belgian beer menu in this place is in a Harry Potter style book of spells and must be 400 pages long. Food menu is still n a piece of Egyptian papyrus....food is good. Atmosphere has declined. Service is not bad. The quarters are tight. They did expand. If you get the "big fella" bartender he is pretty attentive. Anyone else you should just leave. If you get anything, get the crab dip. It's quite amazing. On street parking nearly impossible to find on a weekend so be prepared for a little walk. They turn the good music off when there's one or two tables left and start playing jethro Tull and the like from that point on. That's your cue to leave. This place has me confused. I think I'm moving on to better things to let the yuppie Mercedes and BMW crew enjoy their new discovery. read more

Shocking experience with one of our favorite spots. Jessop's Tavern was our favorite place for celebrating special occasions, (college graduations, birthdays, job promotions, etc...). After each occasion, we left Jessop's with full bellies and smiles on our faces, ready for a pleasant walk around town to digest and enjoy the sites. Unfortunately, we visited Jessop's Tavern the last Saturday in July and encountered our first problematic (and frankly very scary) experience we ever had with Jessop's Tavern (or any restaurant for that matter). This was a very scary first for us. As a family, we decided it was best to share our experience to help prepare other guests, so they do not encounter the same scary scenario we did. When we first sat down, we were met with usual smiles from the staff, but readily noticed there was some noisy drama taking place in the kitchen. Every now and then, someone would storm angrily out of the back kitchen, and the bartender would fire back a remark, but everyone so far was very pleasant when speaking with a dining guest, so it did not affect us at that point. We ordered an appetizer and a round of drinks and had a great time, during the first 30 minutes. However, once our family and a couple seated further down the bar ordered a second round of beers, everyone seated at the bar noticed the beer pours this time around were more foam than beer. As a group, we decided to address the issue to the bartender. My father went first and politely asked if he could have a re-pour - a common request among establishments geared towards beer-drinkers. Before my father could finish his sentence, she interrupted him with their policy on how they pour beer. The bartender didn't give a full response, but instead called upstairs to the manager right away. We found this odd, but assumed the manager was also being called down so she could report to him what was happening in the kitchen. The manager came downstairs extremely irate, armed and ready with a picture of the beer my father ordered and informed him that this particular brand of beer was meant to be poured half full of beer, then the other half of foam. If this is in fact how this beer is meant to be poured - then that is completely fine. All the manager had to do was convey that message, and we would know to order a beer we were more familiar with next time. However, the manager kept berating for how rude we were for making him "come all the way downstairs" and kept saying we "clearly don't know anything about beer, since we'd never been to Belgium." We found this very confusing, because my father only asked the bartender once for a re-pour and before she finished talking, she turned around and called down the manager. We couldn't decide if the manager was joking or actually angry... My father tried to end the conversation so the manager would stop yelling by apologizing and saying, "My mistake and thank you for explaining." This seemed to anger the manager even more and he stormed back upstairs, leaving everyone at the bar very confused and shocked. After the manager left the bar, four other staff members circled the other end of the bar and stared directly at our family and the couple further down the bar, excessively. And when I say "excessively"... I mean it was EXCESSIVE. It felt as though they were trying to intimidate our family and everyone seated at the bar. It felt as though, the staff was appalled at everyone seated for questioning their beer pours and wanted us to know it. The couple at the other end of the bar lightened the mood, suggesting the staff must have been pulling an elaborate prank on everyone. However, the manager's loud, irate tone, the arguing in the kitchen, and the intimidating stares from the other staff members made it very clear the manager and staff weren't joking. We felt very quickly that the staff no longer wanted to deal with the guests in the restaurant. So we kindly paid full price + tip for our entire order and left the bar quickly. Outside, we determined it was best to leave, rather than contact the authorities. Never did I think I would ever have to post a negative Yelp review - and NEVER, in a MILLION years, did I think it would be for a restaurant we have loved for so long, where our family celebrated so many milestones and occasions. The whole experience was very scary and we honestly weren't sure what was going to happen or why we were being screamed at unprovoked... All the manager had to do was say politely how he prefers to pour his beers, rather than screaming at us for questioning his methods. I can only assume our family was the thousandth person to question the beer pours, thus igniting his frustration. However, this anger should not have been taken out on our family. We've shared so many wonderful memories with Jessop's. It's truly a shame what has happened to what was such an incredible establishment. read more

As a history buff, this restaurant satisfies and is the most interesting eating establishment I have ever been to! Take a step back in time to the late 1600s-about 1674 to be exact-said to be the age of this building, and the first business started here in 1724,and immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere of this place located in one of Delaware's most interesting and historical towns, New Castle founded in1640. Food is excellent and the bread pudding might be your main reason to come here just to try that. Most food is served on pewter ware and there are candles at each table adding to the historical atmosphere. I usually get the Pilgrim's Feast, Turkey Platter with all the trimmings, so freshly prepared and great taste, especially the cranberry compote, biscuits, potatoes and stuffing. I also have tried the Fish and Chips and very excellent choice as well. I have also tried the Jalapeno Beer Cheese soup, and it is soo good! I am looking forward to trying some of their other dishes as well from the Pot Pies and the Smorgas-board of different cheeses. Looking forward to returning here again soon. So nice to step back in time and escaping the 21st century and it's turmoil, even if it's only temporarily. read more

don't go. the food was fine...yet I'll never go back. the service was horrible- bus staff tipped-over a half glass of wine - and said "nothing-" not an "I'm sorry- let me get a napkin, clean this up or offer to clean your coat" and did "nothing" as the wine spilled off the table into my coat and jeans. i had to clean up the spill with my napkin and get another napkin off a nearby table. shocked by the poor staff training ! young staff was not trained. i asked for a half glass as a replacement from the server- and it was brought- but again "nothing like - are you okay?" and "no apology". when our table of 5 was finished THEN THERE was an apology for asking us to leave asap - as Jesseps staff said they needed the 6 top table- however- there were plenty of other table clearly available in the front of the restaurant- if you want service - not a good choice. read more

My dad comes here for Christmas Eve every year and I finally got the chance to go with him for a visit myself. From the outside this place looks like an old English tavern... full of charm and inviting. That vibe definitely continues upon entering. We had called ahead and requested the table by the window. It was a Monday and at first. It wasn't crowded , but by 12:30, it was a full house. The main dining room offers a dark, beamed room, with working fireplaces and a long bar. Super cozy. Servers decked out in period attire ( think quasi st Pauli girls for the ladies). Our server Ben was very friendly and knowledgeable. Offered suggestions on food and drinks. The beer menu is a book. I'm not kidding g; like war and peace.. I settled for a Swedish pear cider. Dad and B had these hot mulled ciders with rum. The menu had typical pub fare and then some. Dad told me to try the chicken pot pie ( we all had it) it was fantastic. Piping hot, flaky crust , plenty of heavy chunks of chicken, carrots, yum yum yum. Perfect place to dine on a fall day. My friend had the salmon dish which was really good. We went for lunch and I wanted a salad and ordered The Barrel. Nice selection of veggies BUT the "carved tavern roasted turkey" came in small, perfect cubes and had the texture of lunch meat - no grain - and every bite of it tasted the same. I've eaten the best food in NYC and in great restaurants in Europe and have a pretty refined pallet and if this actually was in house, roasted turkey... well, it wasn't. I was disappointed. The grilled steak was good but the bread,l (rolls), which you have to ask for, was dry. Service was slow but the place needed more help for how busy it was at 3pm on a Friday, so I'm not blaming our server. My friend enjoyed her ice cream. I ordered the bread pudding which was HUGE. It isn't super sweet but had few raisins and was dry. It was ok - some bites were yummy, others were dry, hard and tasteless. read more

So disappointed made reservations in advance, confirmed menu prior to arriving in town for lax tournament just to find we were over charged, promised menu not available, menu items items not matching what was described and treated poorly. From Chicago our families are very well versed in the adventures of fine dining. After receiving such rude and substandard service our server topped the afternoon off with being hostile to questions while showing 3 gratuity options on a $700.00 plus bill & rewarding 20% to herself. We travel all year round as large group, very proud, worldly, accompanied by parents and never have been treated so poorly which such hostility because of a question. This was more than bad day. Could never recommend in good conscience to anyone. We will be back in the area and will definitely pass & warn. Truly a shame had such strong potential.
