Went for s Birthday dinner on a Saturday night with 7:30 reservations. Seated immediately but less than pleased with the table. Main dining room is tight, packed with tables and the bar is never more than one person away from a table as it's in the dining room. Bar was crowded and loud. However, the crowd at the bar died down around 8:15. This made the experience much more pleasant. Our table was small for a 4 top and was in the aisle. It was not comfortable. However, that was the worst part of the meal by far. Our waitress was super busy but brought everything that was asked and it made sure she didn't hover. We started out with the crab dip switches beat in a bread bowl and served with carrots celery and some bread. It was very good. It had a nice Old Bay spice to it and lumps of crap. The meatloaf, pilgrims platter, and shepherds pie were ordered and enjoyed by all. I had a shepherds pie and it is huge. I took it home and will easily have two more meals out of it. It comes with the rich delicious gravy. All the other meals came with delicious roasted vegetables. All meals were a good size as well. My mom loved the sweet potato fries. We shared the apples donut holes, which are more like fritters, with maple walnut ice cream. They were delicious. Brother had the bread pudding which he said had uneven flavor. One bite was different than the next but he said the flavor was good. All in all, if I could get a different table, I'd go back. Nice meal. read more

I'm sorry to say I was disappointed with the lunch I had yesterday. I ordered the Town Hall Turkey. While the sandwich is a huge, generous portion, the texture of the turkey seemed "pressed" rather than authentic sliced turkey. The coleslaw that was part of the sandwich was barely a spoonful and the "extra" slaw that came with the plate was another spoonful - a teaspoon perhaps. I had to ask for additional cranberry mayo since there wasn't near enough to balance the huge amount of turkey. I took half the sandwich in a to-go container but ended up throwing it in the trash before I got to my car. The sweet potato fries were delicious as was the pickle. My friend and i came here after going for a hike. I have lived in delaware all my life. I have heard of jessops but never been in. So many delicious things to get. Went to Jessop's Tavern tonight. We had made a reservation for 10 people, 5 couples with separate checks. If you've been in Jessop's, you know the set up is not conducive to hosting big groups. However, they made it work as usual and we all had a great time. The food and service was amazing. I am so mad that it took me this long to visit Jessop's for the first time!! Back in 2010 several people told me that I had to visit Jessop's. It took over nine years but I finally made it with one of my best friends. Jessop's is amazing!! Awesome ambiance, great staff, and a huge selection of draft beers and cocktails! I was handed a BOOK of Belgium beers to choose from. They have a package license so you can buy a huge selection of beers to take home! The crab dip was served in a bread bowl and it was amazing!! I've been to Jessop's several times over the years, and had varied experiences - some great, some not-so-great. The food is standard American fare, well-prepared - I've never had a bad-tasting meal there. The cheese platter a group of friends and I ordered once a few years back was great - the garlic roasted in olive oil was a very nice touch. The selection of beers on tap is generally decent - at one point, they had a rather tasty ale brewed especially for the place; not sure if that's the case any more. The level of service we've received, however, has varied. I've gone there and waited several minutes to be seated by a disaffected teen waiter - at other times, you're seated promptly. Once, when my wife ordered the garlic mashed potatoes, she received a baked potato on her plate. The waitress told her that they were out of mashed potatoes...but hadn't come back to the table to ask what else she'd like - she made the "executive decision" that we'd just prefer the baked potato (when my wife really would have preferred sweet potato fries as her second choice). Sometimes the food comes out quickly, and sometimes you wait. In short, this place is probably a "your-mileage-may-vary" kind of restaurant. read more

My wife, myself, and our 6 year old son were making our annual drive south for the holidays and looking for a place for dinner. Finding a place that suits everyone usually means settling for a chain restaurant. But we decided to take a chance on Jessop's. Wow! The atmosphere is great. It's a nice comfortable tavern, candles on the table, not loud, very relaxed. The menu didn't list any kids plates, but asking the server he immediately gave us a couple of choices that were all perfectly appropriate. My son got the fish and chips, didn't leave a bit. My wife had a green salad with portabello mushroom, which she commented was particularly good. And I ordered the shepherd's pie. Wow, so good it was almost a life experience. Went to Jessops last night for the first time. It was excellent. The waitress warned us from the start that they had a large party and the food might take a while. It was not too bad and definitely worth the wait. Tucked away in historic New Castle it is a very neat place to eat. We walked through town and through the cemetery which ,George Read ,a signer of the Declaration of Independence is buried. You are also treading the same ground where William Penn took his first steps on American soil. If you like history and good food you will LOVE this place. I recommend the Pot Pie it is huge and delicious. The sweet potatoes fries with the caramel dipping sauce were amazing as well. My boyfriend got the turkey dinner which was huge also and the meal was fantastic. They have a large Belgian Beer selection which is an added bonus. I will definitely be back! read more

My boyfriend has been telling me about this place forever and a day, so finally we drove an hour and half out of our way to eat here. This place is adorable. The tavern is old, the waitstaff wears period clothing, and the prices are what you might expect from a touristy type area. We both ordered some form of a turkey sandwhich, and let me tell you. I could barely get through one half of the thing. The sandwhich was roughly the size of my face, and I'm not Adam Richman (of Man vs. Food) so I did not take down the whole thing. This place is a favorite of my mother's & my grandmother's. I have only been here twice on visits back home and while I wasn't blown away, I didn't hate it either. The decor, atmosphere & theme are worth visiting for. As other Yelpers have noted, the staff wears Colonial period clothing, meals are served on pewter plates, and the fare is very hearty. Colonial music & no TVs, so don't come here if you're looking to watch a game. I had the Red, White & Blue sandwich, which while good was a bit dry. My biggest issue on my last visit was the service. The host was a teenage boy who had ZERO personality. Barely a smile, barely a greeting when we came in the door. He seemed very bothered & just bored to be there. The server was friendly & accommodating but it took close to forty five minutes for us to get our meals, and there were literally only 5 other customers in the restaurant. Going into this place the atmosphere is very cool with a old school colonial tavern. Next they have a Bible of beers for you to try, which I thought it was very cool. It's a place you will need reservations for since it is small. We went with friends and started with the crab dip which was decent. I ended up getting half a duck and some veggies. Duck was alright. Didn't have a whole lot of flavor but the sauce they top it off with was a cranberry sauce, which was ok. Wouldn't order it again. Have had better for $23. My girlfriend got a chicken sandwich which see said tasted very good. Also came with sweet potato fries. Service was actually pretty slow. Being a smaller place it took awhile for our food and waiter to come around. The atmosphere is what made this place. I would come back to drink some beers and try something else. read more

Holy food feast, Batman, we're not in Kansas anymore. If you order the shepherd's pie, I hope you're hungry. It is a feast for a king. The rest of the menu is very tasty, varied, and the plates are full, not overflowing. The beer selection is incredible. The ambiance is perfect for a date, a business meeting, or a place to get a great meal in an authentically old building. The wait staff were very attentive and personable. The restaurant was almost totally full even though it was Tuesday. If you are a tourist and want to try an American experience, it would be very difficult to find somewhere better. Update! Been a few years and thought it would be a good idea to give it another go. What a horrid mistake. I am frankly amazed that it gets good reviews. The service is horrid. Sat at the bar (seats around 14 people for perspective) for 15 minutes before order was taken. I had a local and better half had a Hoegaarden (flabbergasted when check arrived and they charged $7/each for a mug). They still play horrible (what they consider) "colonial Music". I did laugh when Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" played. Not really sure what era that was supposed to capture...lol. So, I decided to have what used to be a fairly decent sandwich and what I would consider a safe choice - tilehouse chicken sandwich. She had fish and ships - the bartender described as their specialty. My sandwich was dry and overcooked and also came with fries that were likely Ore-Ida frozen. The absolutely killer thing was that the ketchup was served in a beer mug with a spoon in it - shared among customers. This is so vile an idea that I know that there definitely is not a manager or staff here with any type of experience working here. The fish and chips was bland and tasteless. I was really happy to hear another bartender list off the specials to neighboring customers as my food arrived. Yep, my bartender in her dirty colonial frock never mentioned it to us. The place is filthy, the food/drinks are over-priced and suck. The service is horrid. Stay away unless you feel the need to have crappy food served by slow, poorly trained/managed wait staff. Jessop's is a MUST for anyone that travels to New Castle or for even the locals! The beer menu is unrivaled by any that I have seen in DE- it's a huge Belgian beer bible and it's fantastic!!! So many options and for those craft beer drinkers out there, the owner ad all bartenders know what they are talking about and will make sure you get to try something new you will love! For me- I always get a Dirty Hoe- make sure to ask for one!!! You won't be sorry! What a cool place that dates to American Colonial times! The place feels like somewhere George Washington stopped to water his horse and have a meal and flagon of ale. The food was also delicious. I had the pot roast, which was tender and moist. The gravy was perfect. My hubby had a burger, which he described as one of the best. We had sweet potato fries with the caramel sauce- woah! These are fantastic. Salty and sweet, why has no one done this before. My husband had a true flagon of ale, and I had a root beer so I wouldn't feel left out. Jessop's has an excellent beer selection! On tap you can find gems like Saison Dupont on a regular basis. The bottle selection is quite good as well. There is not a huge variety, but what they do have is of very good quality. For dinner, I ordered a the Olde Dutch Tilehouse Chicken sandwich (on a pretzel roll!) with the cottage fries. It was tasty. There are some unique selections on the menu and they do a good job of fostering the "colonial atmosphere." My experience at Jessop's was positive. I hesitate on a fifth star because I thought the prices were a bit high for what I was getting. Although my sandwich was good, I would not be jumping at the chance to pay $13 for it again. Also, if I return, I think I will make a point to do so in the colder weather. It was a beautiful day today and they left the front door open, which invited in a large swarm of flies that were quite annoying. read more

Very Nice! It was obvious that most of the people there were regulars...and with good reason. The location is perfect...just 2 blocks from the river in Historic New Castle. Old brick buildings, uneven brick sidewalks, narrow streets...a beautiful area. The interior is lovely: darkly lit, with old brick walls, wooden floors and a fireplace. Tables are candle lit. The food is not fancy or overdone. Traditional items like pot pie, shepherd's pie, and simply prepared meats are served with a selection of potatoes and daily veggies. I had a chicken dish, my husband had duck. Both were perfectly prepared and delicious. For dinner entree with appetizer and drinks expect to spend over $30 per person. They do have a selection of smaller dishes (sandwiches, etc.) at lower prices. Oh, and they have Dogfish Head on tap...so if you're not up for a meal, just stop by for a beer. read more

Oh my goodness! When they say unique colonial experience, they are not lying. Let's start with the beer. TWENTY DRAFTS! Jessops Wheat Ale was very good, lighter for those who aren't too keen on experimenting. I also had a spiced ale which is no longer on the current draft list so I cannot tell you what that was. My parents liked both of theirs. You can't go wrong with their beer. Atmosphere: My mom warned me it may be cold but it wasn't. In fact, it was so cozy even on an extremely chilly November evening. The tables are closely situated and may have provided for the extra warmth. Noted: the close tables aren't an issue unless you get sat next to an unusually loud woman (which still didn't ruin my experience). We ordered the crab dip for the table which was served in a bread bowl and included a table order of free bread with cherry butter. Cherry seemed to be a common factor at Jessop's. My parents ordered the London Broil entree which has always made them happy. It was my first visit an in an attempt to try something new I ordered the Duck entree. Roast Duck Half-ling was covered in some sort of cherry glaze, it was fall off the bone delicious. I will forever dream of eating that duck. Our dessert was the bread pudding (warning it's quite large and could be split between four people). Delicious! Our waiter was dressed in colonial costume and extremely friendly and interested in making sure we had a good experience. A historic building, with an old time tavern feel, Jessop's has been featured on several TV shows for its ghostly inhabitants. However, it should have been featured for the great food it serves, and the great atmosphere! The wait staff are kind, humorous, and made to wear period garb if your into that kind of thing. For starters, we had Sweet Potato fries and a caramel dipping sauce, very tasty, crispy, and a nice balance of salty & sweet. For entrees, I had the Chicken pot pie and my Girlfriend had the Beef and Beer pot pie. Both were served in a pewter pot, filled to the brim with root vegetables (potatoes, carrots, some celery, and turnips), good sauce (Especially the beer & beef as it had a very deep dark flavor). The buttery crust was laid over the pot and left to rise until golden brown. The only con I could bring up is that I noticed the place is only open until 10pm and its a small space for large crowds. The size can't really be helped though, seeing as the building is historic, and can't be changed too much. read more

We ate there for the first time on Saturday, June 6, 2015. The restaurant's atmosphere is nice and the service is good. Good Beer Selection. Very happy with our server. We both order the soup appetizer, Fishermen's Catch, it was good. My husband had the shepherd's pie, which I tasted. We both thought the Shepherd's Pie was delicious and the best we have had. I had the special, Halibut. This was cook well and tasted delicious. It came with fresh green beans, not canned or frozen. The green beans had cheese on them and that I did not like, but could easily be scraped off. It also came with mashed potatoes, which were good, but not what I would pair with fish; I would prefer rice or another veggie. The desserts were the only thing we did NOT like. I got bread pudding and it was way to over baked and dry. My husband go the peach cobbler, which I tasted and neither of us liked; much too sweet and the texture was grainy. We both ended up not eating our dessert. They were that bad. I WOULD definitely go back. I want to try their meatloaf and pot pie. I just won't order dessert.
