What a great little pub with a colonial atmosphere and excellent food. The surrounding area is so cute with historic buildings and brick walkways and a park at the end of the road. When this place says they are a rustic colonial tavern, man are they spot on! Walking into this place transports you back in time. You feel like you could easily look over at the table next to you and see a founding father. I had the Bunker Hill Beef sandwich, which was completely mouth watering. This will be a dinner my husband and I talk about for years. The real candle lit as we sat down in the building from the 1700's just set the cozy, inviting vibe. I'm not sure how I have not written a review of Jessop's prior to now as I've dined here multiple times and have thoroughly enjoyed it each and every time! First, the building is over 300 years old which gives a quaint charm and ambiance. The super friendly waitresses dress in historical garb as well which adds to the atmosphere. While I barely even understand how they do it, the beer book boasts of over 300 beers, with a focus on Belgium beers. The food is delicious too and in my opinion priced well. This trip I had the Smörgas-Bord (so good) which is artisan cheeses, sausage, & fruit served with a fruit preserve, mustard, walnuts & warm bread. As my meal I had a very tasty Pastrami Reuben. I've never had a meal here that I didn't like. I also highly recommend the delicious peach cobbler that is served fresh and hot from the colonial oven and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! It disappeared too quickly to even get a photo! As a bonus, it's located in historic New Castle, where you can walk the cobblestone streets, antique shop, or walk along the water. This was such a great way to spend New Year's day with our DE fam. Went down to the New Castle waterfront on a whim once everyone recovered from prior evening festivities. Poked my head in to see if they could take a group of 11 - host asked if we could make it apps and drinks since they had a lot of reservations and it was just the perfect amount of time to enjoy one of the many many delicious and carefully selected beers in the binder and some tasty, made-with-love light fare. The open faced grilled cheese and shrimp were notably delicious regardless of their somewhat simple menu billing. The atmosphere truly had a historic feel, which capped off a year of travels in Williamsburg and Washington Crossing. Would have never ventured into a high gravity beer, but the description had me at "brewed with 200 Nilla wafers." We can't wait to come back again! read more

Service was great bith nights. 1st night-Prime rib special- husband enjoyed it Fish and chips - a bit too much coating for me. Fish was good though. Crab dip - tasty. More like a soup but lots of crabmeat Fried pickes - tasty Chicken sandwich- small piece of chicken. Daughter thought it was just ok. 2nd night - Duck - husband enjoyed. Said it was Tasty. Lobster pot pie- did not have real lobster meat in this pie. It was "fake lobster meat". I know lobster when I have it. Great old school tavern with an INCREDIBLE beer selection. Sat at the bar and the bartender was very helpful with information about some of the beers. This place was steps from an Airbnb I stayed in across the street, so based on previous guest reviews I went there for dinner. I had chicken fricassee and it was delicious. My green beans were a bit cold, but not a huge deal. The ambience was fun - a warm lit tavern on a foggy night in a town paved with brick and cobblestones. It's a small place and tables are close together but you still have a feeling of intimacy in your own space. My waitress was friendly and efficient. I've been going here 16 years and today I was over charged by the staff. I know the owner Justin and I've never been treated this way. I was charged for a sample as a full drink and when I disputed this and an employee told me, he would fight me if I did not pay and get out. So, offered to pay with the normal military discount I receive, but the manager, Jess, refused to honor the discount I normally receive and said she would call the police unless I paid in full. I make too much money to lose over a fight over a $74 bill, so I paid & left. But I want others to know what they are getting into if they go to Jessop's Tavern. read more

After touring Nemours Estate in nearby Wilmington, my ladies group stopped by Jessop's Tavern for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Luckily, we had a reservation because this place was packed on a beautiful day. Our service was a bit slow, but it was obvious they were short staffed and the waiters were hustling as best they could, considering the crowd. The Fish & Chips caught my eye on the menu, touted as "Voted number 1 three times in the Best of Delaware magazine." I was determined to see about that. Even though I haven't tried other Fish & Chips in Delaware in order to make any comparison. These were quite tasty though and the batter was really savory. The "chips" were amazing. Nicely seasoned wedge potatoes hit the spot. We ordered three desserts to share: Cobblestone Peach Cobbler with homemade ice cream, Dutch Apple Cakes, and Bread Pudding. I LOVE Peach Cobbler so I had no doubt it would be my favorite and I would hope it wasn't anyone else's so I could finish it off, but I was surprised to have such a reaction to the Oli Bolen Dutch Apple Cakes. I hadn't read their description and was expecting little apple cakes, just as the title suggests. OMG! That Usher song began playing in my head and with one bite I realized I was eating my favorite cuisine of all existence in the universe. DONUTS! Deep. Fried. Apple. Donut. Holes. Sadly, the Bread Pudding was tasted and pushed along as I requested the Apple Cakes be presented to me again. I quickly announced it was time to depart for our trip back home to Maryland and I put the remaining two donuts in a to-go container for later. I am so thankful that we discovered this place! I am on a road trip with my husband and brother and we were just passing through the area and were looking for a bite to eat. Walking in, you feel like you are being transported back in time. The venue is unique and fun, full of authentic historical objects. The staff and servers were all friendly and knowledgeable. Everything we ate was amazing. Among us, we ordered the lobster crab cake, the meatloaf sandwich, the chicken entree (it had a weird name), and the blackberry cider. All of the meals were absolutely phenomenal... every last bite was eaten! They did have a live performer on one half of the restaurant playing when we went in for dinner. We sat on the other side of the restaurant and couldn't hear him at all (which we preferred). So just be aware of if you prefer that or not to ask your server to seat you on one side or the other.
