But the shepherds pie was massive, and they didn't skimp on the meat, either. I'm pretty sure my portion would have fed a family back in colonial days. Went to get ice cream today with my family. Waited patiently while the server at the window talked to another client (who already had their ice cream) about good night spots to go. This gem is a short drive from Wilmington and nestled in historic Old Town. The food was very good and the portions were huge. Love the historical significance of New Castle, it's Main Street and surrounding area. Love the authentic aged tavern ambiance. Lots of beer on tap with great colonial names. My husband ordered the Thomas Jefferson. We started with the Jessop's Tavern Crab dip and kept it light with the barrel, which is the house salad with turkey and steak. The dip was rich, warm and comforting. I'm not a celery fan but I ate them all to keep a little more low carb. My husband loved drinking beer out of the hand made mug and I was able to have a couple of samples too. The salad was great! Definitely homemade and microwaved. our server forgot to put in our soup and salad order. our entrees were served before hand, I guess the were "sitting in the window". we ordered another round of drinks. 3 of the 4 arrived...finally I guy delivers the last one ordered and commented "so,you're the table" We were an easy table, no demands, 4 people, no special orders. We discovered this restaurant by accident while wandering the historic colonial center of New Castle, Delaware. It is a colonial tavern full of historic memorabilia and great food. The atmosphere is amazing by itself, but both food and service were excellent. We had the crab dip baked in sourdough bread, salmon perziken, and roast duck halfling. The crab dip is probably the best I've ever had, incredibly rich and flavorful, my duck with green beans and mashed potatoes was excellent, my wife loved the salmon. I had the wonderful Washington's Porter, my wife the Bonny Doon Rose. I wish it was local, I would like to try the rest of the menu, and sample more beer and wines. Jessop's Tavern is somewhat of a historic tourist trap. The staff dress up like colonial workers and the décor is done up to give the feel of Revolutionary times. While the building has been here over 300 years, Jessop's itself is only 20 years old. We came in here after touring the Courthouse that morning and took seats at the bar. They have a huge selection of Belgian beers including the Tripel Van De Garre which is their house beer. The beer has 11 percent alcohol by volume so it packs a punch but was also very refreshing. For lunch I ordered the Dutch Pastrami Reuben which was hot pastrami, swiss cheese, grilled onions and mustard on a pretzel roll. It came with sweet potato fries and a pickle. The meal and beer were delicious. The atmosphere is really cool but because the place is somewhat touristy, there were some little kids screaming which makes the "Tavern" part seem like a misnomer. read more

I was eager to try this place and honestly I thought I was going to be impressed but that wasn't the case at all. I called ahead for reservations for lunch and we were seated immediately Points for having an available reservation during the pandemic. We ordered the crab dip. Kinda bland and it was room temperature. Caesar salad was fresh and delicious. We were super excited about the lobster mac n cheese but again bland and sadly not much lobster. Waitress was sweet. It's a small place so if you don't have reservations you might need to sit at the bar, it was just two of us so it worked out well! Great beer and cider choices. Visited yesterday (Sunday) @ 2:30 to 4:00. Upon entering requested a table, only two tables were occupied. I was told all the tables were reserved for the entire day and only seating at the bar. Visited the bar, great bartender and service. Upon leaving, almost all tables were still not occupied???????? During this period of time many people were turned away. Charming place, great bar service, can't review food because there were no tables available...although unoccupied during the entire length of our visit? Came in today for lunch and enjoyed two of the lunch specials for the week. We started with the Scottish egg as an appetizer, it was really good and served with a really yummy mustard. Great atmosphere and quality food. Apparently the owner insists on making sure the meals are enough for some to take home. We tried so many things --all deliciously made. From the mussels , lobster Mac and even the bread were all served piping hot as well as culinary level good. Main dishes including the duck w the sweet cherry glaze were crisp and delicious. Hard to write a full review, as we were kicked out the place... My wife and I were waiting for 2 others and had a beer and an appetizer. Both were very good. But our friends showed up with their young son, and the staff said we could not get an extra chair for him. Now the place is not big, but he was a child and we could have fit him in. It would have been tight, but no big deal. The staff REFUSED to allow all of us to stay and sit. After 10 minutes of 'negotiating', or trying to, they said they could not accommodate us. Really... Had a reservation for a week then 3 hours before our arrival they accidentally cancelled it. When I got the notification I called immediately and their only response was that we could eat at 8pm.... instead of cancelling the other reservations they made after cancelling mine. We very much enjoyed our visit to Jessop's. The interior decor is very much in line with the historical neighborhood are is the food offerings. The staff wear period costumes which also set the tone. There was a short waiting time for a table when we arrived and we opted to sit at the bar. The bartender came over after helping some other customers, took a drink order and asked if we would like to see the menu, which she brought right over. My cup of coffee was huge and very strong. Just what I needed. The milk was served in a small milk pitcher; right in line with the historical theme they have going on in here. We both got the pot roast dinner which is a huge portion served on a pewter plate. Again, nice touch keeping that historical theme going. The green beans were fresh, not frozen, and still had a nice crispness to them. It was a tasty and filling meal. Real 'home made' food. I absolutely recommend this restaurant if you are in town. The staff were all very pleasant and professional, the restaurant itself feels like you could be stepping back in time and the food good quality. read more

RJ and I had dinner here on New Years Day. We started with skipjack shrimp. They were big beer battered shrimp, and very delicious. RJ ordered Fish and Chips, and I ordered the New Sweden Meatloaf because I can't NOT get the meatloaf. I just can't, no matter how hard I try. It is the most amazing meatloaf on the planet with vodka cream sauce and lingonberry preserves. RJ said the fish and chips were good but he wished he had ordered the meatloaf.
