Where to start? My parents have been member's at Jessup Cellars as far back as I can remember, so, to me, every time I come here for a tasting, It feels like home. Having worked at a winery for part of my professional career. I understand what it takes to make quality wine, and, in my opinion, Jessup Cellars does it about as well as anyone in Napa. Here's the thing about wine. I'm a true believer in the law of diminishing returns. The difference between a $20 wine and $50 wine is pretty significant; however, when you get in that $50-100 range, it gets a little fuzzy. That comment was not meant to criticize Jessup Cellars. In fact, it was meant to compliment the value of the product here. I was not being facetious when I said the wine here was great. The tasting experience is what really brings it together. The wines are paired with cheese, and accompanied by chocolate. My favorite featured wine here is the Jeul. It is a blend of mostly bourdeaux varietals and is terribly well balanced. I've only gone wine tasting a few times before coming to this place, but I've NEVER had an experience like I did here. My hubby and I decided to come to Yountville for my birthday because we've heard great stories from friends. Because of COVID, there was only outdoor seating in their patio, but it was beautiful. Each bench and table were spaced pretty far apart, and each were covered with an umbrella to keep customers out of the sun during their very hot summers. They have strict rules of wearing masks unless you are sitting at the table (love it). The wines were very good and some even unique, like the Chardonnay. They don't sell any of their wines outside of the winery so make sure you get some to go!! We brought some Chardonnay and Zinfandel back home because those were our favorites. All of the wines paired well with the cheeses. It was very hot so our chocolate melted on our plate, which turned into a nice fondue. What made the experience meaningful was the wonderful customer service from Laurel! She's a very friendly woman with great hospitality. Not only was she knowledgeable about the wines, she even recommended a great dinner spot, which we went to later that night. She made us feel very welcome and took the time to get to know us. Jessup Cellars in downtown Yountville has a unique different spin, with an art gallery as part of its ambience in their wine tasting room. three of us decided to go for a wine tasting on week day around 4pm, we called ahead and they were able to accommodate us last minute. They seated us all around a table and provided a variety of cheeses, nuts, crackers, and chocolate to accompany our tasting. We were attended by a representative during the entire tasting who provided information on the wines and suggestions for food parings to enhance aspects of the various wines. You need to make a reservation for a wine tasting so do make sure you call ahead. Our host was very knowledgeable and friendly and showed us around the tasting room - he even gave us each a set of two Silver Oak glasses. My friend's a member at this winery so she booked appointment for 4 of us to have a tasting here. The winery is the oldest tasting room in Napa. The wine is great, and the service especially Laurey Thomas was excellent! She went over details of each of the bottle as she poured it in the glass. It is very small tasting room filled with canvas pictures on the wall. Each of the wine was good except I found the dessert wines to be too sweet, over sweet for me! Wine here are not sold in store or anywhere else so if you likes the wine, it must purchase here. The tasting room was small and clean. So beyond Manny's, Zins, Table for Four, Juel.. they always come up with other wines like Rougette (yum). They also have BEAUTIFUL artwork to enjoy while you drinking their wines. It changes every visit, so it's like visiting a beautiful art gallery wine getting some great wines and great people. They treat all their guest like members, but you get the extra special treatment as a member with the free tastings, events. They have different wine clubs for your budget, so feel free to ask there. I have joined a few memberships in Napa, and so far I've kept Jessup and AO while the other membershps I've cancelled quickly because the membership hasn't disappointed me when I go or bring guests. With our friend from Chicago in town, we made a visit to Napa for wine tasting. After visiting Jessup late last year, we decided to take our friend here. I was fortunate to find a parking space in their lot in back as we arrived for our 11:30am reservations. The tasting bar at the entry areas is for walk-up tasting. We opted for a more relaxing tasting and booked the Education Gallery Flight in the Tasting Gallery. We were welcomed by Whitney, our pourer for our tasting. Our table was set-up with a plate of six cheeses, chocolates and roasted nuts and carafe of water. The tasting consisted of six tastings, which consisted of sauvignon blanc, pinot noir, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, Table for Four red and Juel red. Each wine was matched with a cheese pairing from Atelier JCB. With each wine to be poured, Whitney gave us a background of the wine, where the grapes were sourced, types of barrels used and described the cheese that was paired with it. When she came back for the next pouring, she said she would come back because we were not finished with our prior pour. We appreciated that she did not force the pour on us until we were finished. After the last pour, we asked if we could taste their ports. She came back with a glass of each of the three ports so that we could taste them. Nice gesture. We enjoyed both of the signature blends, Table for Four and Juel and ended up getting a bottle of the Table for Four. The one and half hour experience was so enjoyable. Our first experience was great and Whitney made this tasting experience even better. Our out of town visitor was impressed and said it was memorable. With Covid-19 protocols in place, the tastings were private and spaced out which almost makes it feel as if you have the place to yourself. What makes this tasting even more special is that you don't only get a tasting but you also get a tasting with pairings! One of the happiest discoveries of a trip to the Napa Valley was how much Jessup exceeded our expectations on every level. It was a "filler" stop on a slow afternoon not a destination location. As we departed our tasting we were so glad we went in. We recommend this little bright and art filled tasting room where friendly and well informed staff pour delightful wines for a reasonable fee (refundable no less) as a destination when Yountville bound. THE VIBE AND STAFF We were reluctant to make this destination as we had the sense from reading reviews and reviewing photos that this might be a 'hipster hotspot' for wines as assessed by those who may be starting their wine tasting experience rather than well into their, ummm... experienced years in that regard. We thought we might feel unwelcome, like a cashmere overcoat at a beach party. What we found was that we were most welcome by the friendly young staff who not only answered our questions but volunteered information that we didn't even know to ask about the winery and wines. These are clearly folks who love their job and believe in the product. We were the oldest in the room until almost the end of a delightful 40 minutes of tasting when a tour bus of folks who were at least our ages pulled in to groans of "oh...here THEY come" from one of the staffers who by this time did not consider my husband and I "THEY" for age perhaps. Casual, warm, friendly venue too with art and light throughout. All tasting was done at the tasting bar although there are tables and chairs which I surmised were for groups, like the folks coming in on that bus. Who were going to spend money at the winery. Yep, we ummm...well aged folks drink wine too. WINES As I recall the winery is now owned by deep pocket health professionals. The winemaker they've hired clearly knows his craft. Although the winery owns no real estate, that is they buy all their grapes from others and have no estate bottlings, the wine is both worthy of laying down and drinking now. We enjoyed their Cab and a Petite Sirah too (if my memory is right) and they also make a Port styled wine. THE DRILL & FEES No reservations needed, at least on the day we walked in to taste at the bar. Prices for wine are on par with other Napa Valley wineries in the mid range market. Tasting fee is very reasonable at $20 / person given the breadth of wine and size of pours. Better yet, it is refundable with a two bottle purchase. We bought six. SPECIAL EVENTS & WINE CLUB The winery hosts special events from time to time that involve both wine education and music including some that are wine club members only. Would be a fun club to which to belong if the commute wasn't about 12 hours long for us. THIS N THAT: 1) Parking: On street in Yountville if you can find it. 2) Accessibility: Level in and throughout. Unfortunately the seated height counter at the tasting bar was used for old glassware. The young man who threw himself at the Roseberg Community College shooter last week is a 23 year old, ex military athlete who as a result of his injuries resulting in saved lives will be in a wheelchair for "the foreseeable future" says his family. The law is that accessible space has to be provided at counters like this and it is just that young man it had in mind. He should be just as welcome when he needs to sit to taste as when he can stand. 3) Crowds: Abundant on weekends and during peak tourist times. Plan accordingly. 4) No wines by the glass: It takes a specific kind of license for a tasting room to be able to pour wines by the glass. They do not have that license at Jessup. Jessup is not located in a vineyard or have a beautiful landscape or even picture perfect photos but it DOES have good wine and even snacks (chocolate, nuts, cheese, crackers) with the tasting. Another cute little winery on Washington St. in the ever-so-charming Yountville! We made reservations the day before through our hotel but I believe you can do walk-ins as well. It ended up feeling like we owned the place . The decor is upscale and welcoming. The inside itself features many local artists' paintings (also available for purchase), but it feels like you're wine tasting in luxury. Compared to the other wine tasting rooms, the prices here were very fair! My wife and I both split the 6 wines available for tasting, and it was $20/pp. Very reasonable for Yountville. The pours were generous, and Carlos, the Tasting Gallery Lead even gave us an extra pour each at the end! I live in Napa and decided to take an impromptu drive to Yountville on a day off. I drove by and saw they were open on their patio. I've heard so many great things about Jessup from the hotel I work for. I sent out a message on their website and was able to get a reservation shortly after. Which is unheard of but during COVID, I want to support businesses as much as possible especially ones that are keeping it safe. Hit Jessup Cellars both late and early in the day Saturday at the Taste of Yountville. Jessup was one of three music venues and to me - BY FAR the best. It was intimate, thoughtful, serving great wines and some nibbles. Also - best thing - DOG FRIENDLY! The stage was set up in the parking lot with a tent. I already knew visiting Jessup Cellars our first time was going to be an enjoyable experience because when I had made reservations over the phone for our tasting, the person I spoke with was super sweet and friendly! We arrived today, which also happened to be the hottest day of the weekend heatwave that was going on! They had outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade and limited indoor seating as well. I was super thankful and happy that we got seated inside with A/C for our tasting, a nice break from the 106 degree heat! With the indoor seating, I noticed that they only sat a few parties inside and the parties were well spaced apart, which is good cause you know...Covid. We were led to our table, which was already setup with our wine glasses, water, and the wine tasting menu. It was very cool that we were surrounded by art, which was really nice to look at while doing our tasting. My husband and I both decided to each do the 3 tastings for $15, where we both got to try all 6 of the wine selection to taste. We started with the Whites and we were pleasantly surprised that we thoroughly enjoyed them, especially their Sauvignon Blanc! That one was light and refreshing with hints of floral in it. We actually ended up purchasing 2 bottles of this one to bring home with us! Also FYI, your tasting fee of up to $40 is waived if you purchase any 2 of their bottles and they don't sell their wines at other stores so you can only purchase their wines here. After tasting their Chardonnay, we weren't too sure if we liked this one but the more we sipped on it, the more it grew on us. Their Reds are good too particularly one of their Zinfandels (not on the tasting menu), which our wine expert brought out to us to try after we told her that the Zinfandel from the list was a bit too strong in flavor for us. So the second Zinfandel she brought out was definitely more to our liking. We also got complimentary chocolate to pair with our Reds, which made the experience even better! We loved our tasting experience here and appreciate how genuinely sweet everyone here is! I love Yountville in general. It's a nice change up from driving/ubering from winery to winery all day. Yountville is a strip of walkable tasting rooms, most of which are really great. Jessup Cellars was by far our favorite. We left as members. If you are a Chardonnay drinker, you are definitely going to want to stop here. When we went they were out of Chardonnay, but we ordered some and it lived up to the hype. Table for Four is another great wine. It's pricey (approx $100/bottle) but so worth it. read more
