Visiting Toronto for the first time I like getting up super early in the morning to start my day off exploring and one of the downside is nothing in this city seems to be open before 8am on a weekday besides gas stations. So I was very happy to stumble upon this coffee shop well visiting the cabbage town part of Toronto. The employee was very nice and when I told him my situation we had a good laugh and he said I'm right about nothing being open.I ordered a coffee with milk And I didn't hear what he called the pastry but it seemed like a lemon danish. Everything was very good The coffee was fresh flavorful and the thing is was very good and you taste the lemon but it wasn't overpowering. Stayed at Cabbage town for a solotrip and this coffee place brings amazing vibe. Taste-wise depends on personal preference, but they offer simple hot and ice espresso drinks. Go early for fresh hot handmade pastries. Staffs were always ready for a conversation. I had a great time chatting with Nhu and Sarah, and there's one bakery guy that is so so pretty. An old-school vibe which is enhanced by lots of stainless steel, vintage lighting, and antique bikes hanging on the walls. The shop's been in Cabbagetown for decades, and so have many of the regulars. It seats about 30 people and can be quite noisy on full mornings, but the afternoons are usually quiet. The front window seats are great for people watching. Espresso based drinks are nothing fancy but they also have a small selection of teas, and they make a kick-ass fresh-squeezed lemonade. Best iced Americano I've ever had! I was in the neighbourhood and tried to find some caffeine on a Sunday morning. Previously I've heard good things about this coffee shop so I decided to give it a try. There is no menu, so I went with dripped coffee but they only offered espresso based drinks. I ended up getting an iced Amerciano, recommended by the lady who works there. Super legit coffee spot serving great coffee since xxxx (aka I have no idea but it's been here for a long while) I rarely come to this hood as I live in the suburbs but I've read about this place for a long time. Finally popped in on a Saturday and tried it. Their espressos and lattes are no nonsense. Well pulled, perfect and smooth, and no caramel macchiatos or sugary stuff here. My friend introduced me to the coffee at this little spot and I've been there about half a dozen times since then. The takeout window can sometimes have a long lineup, but the coffee is worth it! Jet Fuel kicks the trend of minimalist bright instagram friendly spots. This is authentically rough around the corners and loves it that way. As for the drinks itself... confusing but at least a good flavour. This spot is dark... lots of deep reds and shadowed corners where you can sit. There's only one spot with windows and even then it's recessed so you don't get a lot of lights. The funny thing that most people would say it has a retro vibe when they walk in. It's actually more the case they've never changed since they've opened over 10 years ago. They have this great old sound system and it's just pushing out classic or indie rock. There are lots of different tables to sit and enjoy your cup. Service here is ... at best spotty. Not that they don't actually care, I think it's a 'take it or leave it but when we get to you, we'll show you that we care.' Ultra leisurely or lax might be the word. The line up is unclear... and only are they willing to tell you after you've stood there for 5 minutes. While waiting in line, we saw 3 people walk in and straight out after seeing the line being 4 people deep. I can see why... it takes a slow 8 minutes for each person. Another thing that is confusing is the lack of menu at all... the do have 2 cups off the side with a price of $3 for a medium and $4 for a large. But that's it. Matcha latte - I did appreciate they used an organic matcha powder to create latte and she used a traditional whisk. What unfortunately happened was that it wasn't whisked well... there was a lot of clumps of matted bitter matcha powder that wasn't dissolved. It didnt make for the smoothest drink. 2/5 Flat white - This was definitely not a flat white... definitely not a cappuccino either. Closer to a latte with a serious amount of froth on top. That being said, it was only $3... its close to Tim Horton's pricing with actually good tastes. For a latte, it's actually good. Since we ordered a flat white, this was laughably silly. 3/5 This was an interesting spot but with the lack of attentive and normal speed of service, it could be frustrating. Their Americanos are delicious and served in tall glasses. I enjoyed a raspberry muffin that was also pretty tasty with a soft centre and crispy top! The service is friendly and prompt, and the brasitas genuinely appear to be enjoying themselves. The atmosphere is relaxed with wood floors and art on the wall. They also have a nice selection of jams playing at an appropriate volume in the background (you can hear the and also hear your own conversation!) After almost a year and a half of being in Toronto, I finally went to this place that many have suggested. If you are a regular to this 'institution' you might not the drill as you walk in. I was at a total loss. Where do I order? Since there is no menu, what do I order? I stood there for at least five minutes trying either not to be in the way or trying to figure how i would be able to be in a line that would make me at least look like I wanted something. Just as a side note. If you are a short person like myself, the high counter for ordering makes a short person feel like a toddler. I truly did not like that. Wow. Visually, Jet Fuel isn't much to brag about. I mean, it is decent. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious, nothing 'nice' per se. But, it's a decent looking joint. BUT, once you try their coffee, you will not wanna go anywhere else. I just cannot believe how good their coffee is in comparison to everywhere else in Toronto I've had it. It's delicious. Simply, delicious. By far the best thing. It truly is a place for regulars -- you see the same faces every time (including my own). Some people have been going there for years. Just overheard a lady two days ago that it's her 8th year anniversary. That's what I call dedication. But yes, if you are looking for amazing coffee - and at really good prices - Jet Fuel is the place for you. If you live on Parliament, even better, because it'll kind of start feeling like home sooner or later. I tend to do my studying there (very conducive to that) and haven't spoken to people much, but I'm sure they're more than willing to talk. Plus, I love the baristas. Overall a cute place to grab some caffeine. After having a full meal at Under the table restaurant, we decided to head here to get our java on and just chill and talk. The bright red walls and artists works on the wall gives it the cool cat kinda vibe. There are quite a few tables in here - it extends all the way to the back so keep on walking and looking at the art on the walls. there are small fans, jerseys and little knick knacks all over the place. Makes for some interesting conversations. There is no menu posted - just tell the baristas what you want and they will accommodate you as best as possible. It can get a bit crowded at the front - where you are ordering and waiting for your drink. Also they give you your drink in a glass - not a mug or paper cup (unless I think you are taking it to go). Coffee in a water glass? Cool. I just wanted a tea so I choose to have a lemon and ginger tea. It came with real big pieces of ginger and lemon in it. It did cost $4 which I thought was way too expensive since both those ingredients are cheap...but oh well. My friend's coffee was $3 It does look a bit rundown but it adds to the charm. I always enjoy stopping by this busy little joint. There's definitely a core crowd that they cater to and a few have already referred to that; the cycling crowd. And to be honest I don't know that its such a bad thing. They usually have the best seats nailed down (the ones at the front near the window), and they definitely are in there at least once a day, most days because they sit and chat with each other and the the staff a fair bit. But it is a sight; and for a 'people watching' person I honestly don't mind the "excitement". A few times I stopped in and they had the Tour de France on which was amazing. It's not your typical viewing choice, but as I said it's a cyclist-oriented cafe. What would you put on? Now for the drinks. I usually have a latte and its pretty standard, although a little more foam than I typically think is appropriate. (For the price, I won't complain though!) Despite the lack of a menu I have never had any problems ordering anything else. The pastries and cookies are right there behind the counter (and are delicious), and if you have a question, most of the staff seem interested in making sure you get what you need. They do hot and cold versions of most if not all the offerings and they even make a matcha latte with just the unsweetened ground matcha, which they mix with how ever much or little raw brown sugar you like. If you live in the area I would definitely recommend Jet Fuel over Starbucks or other chains near by. read more

Everyone in here seemed to have a latte, so I ordered one. There's no menu, which means it's a *SERIOUS COFFEE PLACE*. The foam top is was fluffy and stiff, which was nice for mouth feel though I imagine some coffee snobs would demand their microform. The tall blonde pixied haired barista was too cool for school and seemed pissed when I didn't know that the coffee served in clear glasses were lattes, but I get that service jobs suck. Great location, coffee and atmosphere. But one particular staff member is consistently rude to me. I'd come from an early morning workout, feeling healthy and on a dopamine high. But on this particular Sunday morning, I came in waited my turn, then started ordering. The barista said hello, then I started with "oh right, hello". But she interrupted me before I could finish and barked an order request. It was all very curt and halted, so I finished saying hello and gave my order. She then gave me the worst stink eye and rudely returned my change and drink. Now, I usually let these kinds of things go. But I've been served by her at least 3 times, and she's consistently rude to me. And when I'm polite, I'm tired of having my good moods extinguished by someone who's consistently shown nothing but contempt for that politeness and my business. As a black man, I hope that's not the issue. But I can't think of why she thinks this treatment is ok. Anyways, YMMV. It sucks because I really like the coffee and everything else. My BF and I visited Jet Fuel on a Sunday morning after it was recommended to us by a number of people since we live in the neighbourhood. Upon walking in, we were confused - there is no menu, no clear place at the counter to order and no clear line (people were just gathered around the counter hanging out like they were at a bar on Friday night waiting to get a drink). Sidenote: We drink a lot of coffee, and not the frilly stuff (just a plain latte is fine) and have been to a lot of the unique coffee shops in the city. We don't need anything special in a coffee shop - just to get in and out with our coffee without much hassle. After taking a minute to figure out what we were supposed to do, we approach the counter and wait for someone to take our order (or even to be acknowledged that we had entered the shop). Meanwhile, the barista was chitchatting with someone who was obviously a regular. After about 5 minutes, finally someone realizes we are there and takes our order - apologizing (half-heartedly) to us for talking to the others and not us because they were "regulars". After finally placing our order, we had our lattes but then waited another few minutes for someone to take our money (it was so confused in there we probably could've walked right out without paying - not that I would). I realize it was late Sunday morning which is going to be peak time at any coffee shop and therefore it is going to be busy - but there are many businesses that manage to handle high volumes of traffic in a much less chaotic way than Jet Fuel. In summary, they give you a decent latte (not the best I've ever had) for $3 which is a good deal. But what turned me off is their disregard for those who are not "regulars" - not a good attitude to have, considering I live minutes away and would be happy to be a regular if my initial experience was good. read more

This is a latte I have found that REALLY gets you wired for the next 6-7 hours. Excellent to pick up before embarking on a study session.. or if you are like me a dance-and-clean-apartment-athon. It can be a bit confusing when you first walk in to this place. No menu. No "Oh hello what can I get you?". You just get a hold of someone behind the counter and order a coffee related drink to see if they have it (atleast thats what i do). They will whip you up a delicious drink, then quote you a a ridiculously cheap price for a beverage of high standards. BONUS! This place is right across from a great burger place, and its my usual place to shake off after-big-meal sleepiness. Dropped in because I had to kill some time while waiting for the Yelp Elite dinner nearby and also, let's be honest, "Mother Nature was calling". So, being Italian, I ordered an espresso; a short espresso! Once the coffee was ready in front of me, at first sight, it looked anything but very short. I got what back home would be labelled as double espresso. In all honesty, I was annoyed because I wasn't in the mood to taste the usual strong, bitter, almost burnt coffee the most people love here. But here's where I got surprised. Despite the espresso was way too long consider the standard length among most Latin countries, the coffee tasted really good. And I guess is because the owner does his own toasting and so, the result is far better than most coffee shop. Remember, this is my opinion how a coffee should be served based on a standard from a country that for centuries made coffee one of its favourite drink during the day. Espresso back home isn't nearly as strong as here but the toast process and the choice of the beans is all driven by what the people like and so, I can't say coffee is bad here in North America: it's just different, and most of the time, I don't like the flavour. In the end, here I found a good quality that is quite close to what I like and expect to get when I walk in a bar, coffee shop. So, if you like the Italian espresso, here the taste of it is closer than many other places in Toronto. Good place, unique in its genre. Worth to pay a visit if in the neighbourhood. :) read more

I'm told that a seasoned food critic makes at least two visits to a venue before posting a review. I've read enough reviews to have some idea about how it's done: maybe you repeat an appetizer, share a different set of mains with the group, leave room for a few desserts, which you then dismiss as store-bought. Surely, you don't write a review on the strength one item, even if it's the only thing that you've ever ordered. More surely, you don't bind your review in a personal tale of loss and redemption, especially of the romantic kind. Most surely of all, you don't recommend a place, then tell your readers that you will likely never visit again. Yet this is how I feel about Jet Fuel, a hipster-cum-bike messenger coffee shop on the stretch of Parliament that divides gentrified Cabbagetown and yet-to-gentrify St. Jamestown, Jet Fuel is a noisy, hot, red room. The hours are erratic, and the staff is by turns friendly, giggly, surly, paranoid, and hungry. Reaally hungry, man. The clientele reflects the neighborhood; at least those members who can afford $3.50 for the best latte in town: mostly bike couriers who could deduct the caffeine as a work expense, the aging literary class, and Church Street migrants. Michael Ondaatje acknowledges the place by name in his 2007 book, "Divisadero". Allegedly, they serve baked goods, tea, hot chocolate and the like. I never bothered with any of it. Jet Fuel is where I'd stop after a night spent with someone for whom I cared deeply, though I don't think that she felt quite the same way. I'd be late for work, fooled by the fact that I was "downtown" relative to my apartment, but really too far to walk to be expected to make it in on time. Not that I cared; we got together in the dying months of a lousy contract job. At the time, she was the best thing I had going. Coffee at Jet Fuel became part of the ritual; a way to savor a lovely evening, as I headed in to a grim day. The coffee was the best I'd ever tasted; a double-shot latte, with minimal, densely-packed foam. The milk was intensely sweet, even without sugar. The espresso, fresh, hot shots with a depth that spoke of cocoa and echoed the Spanish red wine we'd drunk the night before. This was coffee my brain could believe in. Served in a white paper cup with a black lid, it was a private pleasure; the previous night in liquid form. I drank with gusto. The drink was short, but hot and sweet, and I always wanted more. Since then, I've found new outlets for caffeine and for company. I even own a "Disloyalty Card" which I get stamped as I visit hipster coffee bars around the city. Perhaps it is a handy reminder that all too often, people come and go. Each new latte takes me a step further from those mornings on Parliament. I wonder whether that subtle sweetness came from properly-roasted beans and perfectly-steamed milk, or from the memory of her lip gloss. I wonder whether the surge of energy I feel comes from the double-shot of espresso, or a night spent with her in my arms. I have found love since, and don't need to revisit either. read more

I'm gonna say it, though for regulars I'm sure this is no surprise - Jet Fuel has developed an attitude, and it has way too much ego and arrogance to be much fun. The coffee is absolutely first rate, and I would heartily recommend you come here when you're with friends and want to chat while drinking fantastic espresso and such. If you're alone, however, you may find the atmosphere wanting - the music is super loud and it's difficult to concentrate, much less read anything. Any people watching you may want to do goes out the window because you can't even hear yourself think. As for the attitude ... I've been coming here for 3 years now, and I've always been able to just walk up to the counter, ask for a coffee, and 3 minutes later, something was put in front of me that I enjoyed. Didn't even care what it was, or how much I paid, because the quality is just too good. Now? I get a lecture about how I can't just ask for a 'coffee', it's a friggin' Americano. And I need to be taught how to order it. Yes, I know, Jet Fuel is a haven for coffee snobs - I'm not averse to the idea (proud beer snob here), and I didn't mind being sassed for this over the last 3 years (that's always fun, especially as a QC fan), but give me a damn break. You wanna sass me? Sure. Make fun of me after I've paid and walk away? Go ahead. But to give me a lecture about what an Americano is? Give me a break. And unfortunately, this has happened more than once. I'm trying to move on ... but it's hard. Jet Fuel has probably the best coffee in Toronto. I have a hard time understanding why people have a problem with this place. The coffee is fantastic, the service is simple and efficient, and there is plenty of seating and outlets for all day loungers. If you are the type of person who requires inauthentic smiles and giant menus to hum and haw over for 2 minutes while a line of people forms behind you, go find a McCafe, a Starbucks, or a Second Cup. If you know what you want to drink and prefer to buy it for less than everywhere else, come here. You won't have a barista validate your existence by being phony friendly to you, instead you'll get served by someone who won't waste your time. read more

Now, I understand that the name is Jet Fuel and they are all about the coffee, but would it be such an awful thing to serve up your supposedly delicious coffee in a decaf form for someone who can't have caffeine? Has your fetishism for coffee reached the level of religion such that in effect I just marched into your church, asked for decaf, and then pissed all over the altar? Because I'd like Jet Fuel to explain their reasons for their utter rudeness. You're a coffee shop. You sell coffee. Decaf is a legitimate choice of coffee. OK fine. I'll accept that you don't want to serve it, but how about you be polite about it? You've been known to CHASE people out of the door just because they ordered something normal that you find offensive. Cabbagetown is in need of excellent services as the Parliament area continues to improve its offering, but Jet Fuel does nothing to help that. If they can't change their attitude and product, my opinion is that the sooner they are replaced the better. For all of those who've had a good experience - I say congratulations. You're one of the lucky ones who Jet Fuel clearly has determined to be cool enough to be in their club. For everyone else, Jet Fuel says you can go F yourselves. My recommendation? Avoid like the plague. Go a bit further to Dundas and Munro, and on Matilda St you'll find Merchants of Green Coffee - the total antithesis of Jet Fuel. I'm trying to think of just one thing that was nice about this place, but I just can't think of anything. I came here with a group of 4 friends and one of them had suggested it. It was hot outside so I wanted something cold. I looked for the menu and clearly could not find it as they do not have one (how convenient!). I am by no means a coffee expert so I asked the woman behind the counter for any kind of cold coffee drink she would recommend (I'm not picky). She said, "Uhh..well all we have is iced coffee. We don't own a blender or anything." I guess that's my bad for thinking a shop that specializes in making drinks would own a blender to crush ice. Whatever. I told her I'd get the iced coffee. She stared at me blankly and there was an awkward silence. I didn't know what she wanted. She said, "Sooo...what kind of coffee do you want?" "Uhh.." "Cappucino? Latte? What do you want!?" "Sure cappucino is fine," I said. "Don't forget to bring your glass back to the counter when you're done," she said. The drink was horrible. Everyone else who tasted it didn't like it. I forced it down cause I was hot and returned my glass to the counter like she asked. I guess the servers don't clean the tables. I saw serveal other empty tables with dirty glasses just sitting there. Maybe the coffee is "good quality' like some people say, but it still didn't taste good. Here's some advice for anyone going to Jet Fuel. Order a latte, cappuccino or jet fuel coffee. It will come in a big glass. It will cost $3. Pay when you leave. Give the server a tip. Apparently these are big secrets. There is no signage to let you know any of this. If you have to ask, you will be made to feel inferior. Came late on a weekend afternoon. There was a line along the barista bar with only one barista. She was efficient with the orders so the line went quickly. I know some people who have had some rude experiences with the baristas but she was fine. I had a small latte which was $2 - pretty cheap for a latte. I think it's only 8 ounces (maybe 6?) so smaller than other places but nonetheless gave me the java jolt I needed in the afternoon. Normally I wouldn't review a place that I've been so many times. My parents moved to Cabbagetown some eight years ago, and I have been going to Jet Fuel probably once a week, averaged out over eight years (eg this is my fourth or fifth time this week, but I hadn't been since Christmastime before that). That's a lot of Jet Fuel over eight years, probably enough to fly into space (as Young Jeezy so eloquently puts it, "I'm in my spaceship, that's right I work for NASA"). However, I'm writing this review because one of my favorite baristas recently told me that Yelp and Blogto were burning them, and that ain't right. Jet Fuel is far less pretentious than many new-kid-on-the-block, West End coffee shops. Jet Fuellers don't boast about the complex notes of orange peel, cinnamon and tar in the coffee, and their bar mercifully isn't constructed from ubiquitous fair-trade recovered barn board. On the other hand, Jet Fuel does have good art on the walls and good music, making it a cool atmosphere. They have plugs and wifi galore, and its never very tough to get a seat (even if you have to share), which makes it a great place to work?. But what about the coffee?!?! In general I'm not all that particular, but I'm a fan of JF's coffee. I think its tasty and done well. Its also cheap (cf other East Side places like Bulldog). As some critics have pointed out, its true that the pricing system is opaque. After eight years going here I still don't understand it. Oh well. Just ask someone! read more

I really liked this spot. Comfy seating, great service, decent prices and wifi. The only issue I had was that their wifi was dial-up speed. I had a delicious vegan hot chocolate in a pint glass for $3 and worked away uninterrupted for about an hour. At one point I logged out of their free wifi and opted to tether my phone instead. My first time here this morning. Went to Tasso to get some pastries and passed by Jet Fuel. I know this is a neighbourhood institution. I got an americano to go and added a splash of 10% cream. It was one of THE best americanos I have had in the city. So strong but so smooth! I hate americanos that taste bitter. I would definitely go back. read more
