The workers in the Bakery at the Jewel on Route 59, made a full sheet cake for my family, with strawberry preserve filling and a buttercream frosting, and it was literally...THE BEST TASTING CAKE I'd ever had!!! I called early this morning and thanked them. The cake was for my dad's 81st birthday, and the cake made the day sweeter! I stopped by the bakery last week to get a cookie cake for my daughter's birthday but the only cookie cakes out were winter themed. I really needed this cake so I went over to the to ask if they had any more in the back. The young blonde lady at the bakery said they did have more and even offered to decorate one for me, she was so sweet in willing! I then asked where i could find more birthday party decorations and the other sweet woman in the bakery decorating showed me where it was right away and even asked me if i needed anything else. My daughter's cookie cake turned out exactly how i wanted!! I will definitely be returning to get more cakes decorated at this jewel, keep up the good work ladies! read more

First of all, the produce is consistently sub-par. Spoiled produce right on the shelves leads to picking through to find anything decent. Then the selection of regular grocery is so poor. You have 500 varieties of frozen pizza but only a handful of vegetarian or vegan dinner options. And you have multitudes of one variety of an item but none of any other flavors of that item. But the worst is the advertising of special deals that you have to "clip" on the app. But half the time their internet is sketchy so when you check out, half your coupons aren't there. And if you don't watch, you don't realize until you get home because all those price reductions aren't tallied until the end. Do better jewel. You are the only grocery store left in Antioch proper. Those of us who shop at the Jewel in Antioch are familiar with the stocking problems and the low quality of a lot of their produce. We know the grapes are often too sour to eat, the iceburg lettuce can be solid as a rock, the artichokes are usually awful, and the berries are often on the verge of going bad. Here's an issue I find unforgivable, and so important that I want others to know for their safety. I bought a loaf of their sourdough bread recently. This is a product that is baked in the store. I always diligently check the date, and saw that the bread was baked that day, so I knew it would be fresh. When I got home and unpacked my groceries, I immediately noticed there was a big patch of mold on the bread. Most of us know that mold cannot grow in a day, it's scientifically impossible. That means the date was fictitious! That means the bakery is lying about the freshness dates! This totally undermines the credibility of this store! I drove right back to the store and told the manager. She seemed concerned and told me that the current bakery manager had been "cutting corners" and "was under a lot of stress". She quickly refunded my money and apologized. I implored her to elevate the issue to upper management so something could be done to resolve this critical problem. Then I saw her head towards the bakery, and as I went to find a replacement loaf of bread, I saw her speaking to one of the bakery people. They started removing the bad bread. A few days later, I went to the store and saw the same manager and asked her what had been done to resolve the issue. She told me that complaints have to go through the union and it's a difficult process...blah blah blah. So I asked, "so it was never elevated to management outside this store?" She said no. So apparently no one in the corporate office heard about this devastating breach of consumer trust! Does the meat department do the same dishonest practice? The deli? I am appalled by the dishonesty here, and very disappointed that such an important matter was not reported to upper management. I've been shopping at Jewel Osco for decades and am so disappointed in them now. Please be careful when shopping there. read more

Today I waited at deli counter over 20 minutes to get a pound of ham. Even though they have numbers, more than once the worker let someone cut in line because they only were getting 1 item. With 5 employees in view only 1 waiting on customers at counter...won't be going back. read more

I was at the chefs kitchen counter patiently waiting for my number to be called. There were 6 workers but I could only see one waiting on customers. To my surprise they weren't using the number system. I'm 73 years old and 4'11. I'm too short! I was skipped over. I was upset at the other customers taking my turn and then was just plain furious that Jewel wasn't using the number system. read more

Today I went to the local Jewel for their Monday chicken deal for our family. There was quite a few people waiting already when I got there. I took a number and moved to the back so other people could get a number and their chicken. After waiting for 25 minutes the woman at the counter decided that there would be no more numbers for chicken and asked everyone to get in line. Of course everyone rushed to get in line. Although my number was next I was now last in line and had to wait an additional 20 minutes for food. My father and children had now been waiting in the car for almost 45 minutes. The woman was not only not following store protocol of the waiting system, she was also rude to the other employee woman at the counter yelling at her several times. Horrible experience! read more

Each time I go to the sushi counter, I always ask them to make me two orders of Philadelphia rolls with salmon and not only are they accommodating but very professional. They seem to recognize me now so I do a little shopping and a couple minutes later, it's ready for pick up. They hand it to me personally and it always is fresh and delicious. The deli at this Jewel needs big time help. There are never enough workers at any time. Plan on waiting at least 20 minutes to get waited on. And why don't they separate the chicken counter so you ca. buy a bucket of wings quickly instead of waiting for someone to buy their 10 sliced deli items. This is a Jewel Osco location. There aren't many Osco's left in the area since most of them were all sold to CVS. What's crazy is CVS just built a huge location across the street from here. Why? There is too much saturation of these places. Not to mention the new Walgreens down the road. Everyone knows what a Jewel is. It has food and it is not going to wow your shopping pants off. It's not a Mariano's with it's wine bar or sushi bar. It's not a Whole Foods with a $10 head of broccoli. It is just a plain old food store. You remember when food stores just sold food. Yeah this is that place. One thing you will notice is all of the price drops. The food business has become very competitive and this is due to more people buying food instead of going out to eat all of the time. Plus Jewel can't compete with the bar inside the store that is more social then food shopping. So they have to lower prices. Speaking of bars there was a tasting going on tonight which was kid of cool. Actually the lady running the tasting was really nice. She was sampling 2 reds, 1 white, 1 champagne and a fruit punch vodka that tasted like juicy fruit gum. This was exactly what the doctor ordered to take the edge off of all of the stressed Christmas shoppers. We grabbed what we needed and hit the self check out. I love self check out until the computer starts freaking out if you don't pack your bags properly or move your hand the wrong way. Tonight was one of those nights...the motion computer was really sensitive for some reason. We muscled through it despite the stares of the people waiting to check out behind us. The parking lot here is huge. In fact, it's always packed, so that is a good sign for this store. So if you need groceries and I know you will, then stop in and load up and hopefully there's an alcohol tasting going on. That's a bonus at Jewel. read more

I had a new prescription I was picking up. They substituted my meds, when it says on the script "Do Not Substitute", but every pharmacy messes it up so that's par for the course. They said they will not be able get the correct (not at all obscure) meds. Ok? Bizarre, but whatever. The real problem was the people working behind the counter. Very friendly and apologetic for not having the right meds, but one had a tiny bandana as a face covering that I could see her entire bottom lip and another waltzed back behind the counter and she was wearing no face mask at all. In the middle of a pandemic. When already immunocompromised people are relying on professionals to keep them safe. Sorry Osco. You lost me with one visit. read more

Employees in department were very nice and helpful. People working in the produce had no clue where anything was and when asked about basil, told Me to hold on while they went and asked. He cane back and looked me in the face and said can I help you. I said ummmm the basil. He said what about it. I said you went to go look where it's at. He says no. I said what you mean no. He said no again. I said no what. He says no don't have it. We don't sell it. I rolled my eyes and walked away. Matt in seafood was rude, grouchy, and when I said thank you had nothing to say in return. Went thru every isle Troy g to find pizza sauce. No one around to help anywhere. Go back to matt and he says try one of first few isles. Thanks Service sucks. Sucks on all levels except the sweet girl in deli. Even cashier says to me at the end: my kane is 15 items or less, use a different land next time. I said where does it say that. His answer: read the small letters at the top. I said I don't see that. Produce has been very bad recently. They will give you a refund if you bring it back in showing it is bad, but who wants to bag up rotten fruit or vegetables and drive back up there? I did take a picture of a rotten watermelon and showed the lady at customer service and she let me get a new one. They are also out of many items, which is frustrating. I rarely end up in a line that has a bagger, if I wanted to bag my own items, I would go to Aldi and save 50% off my bill. The signage and sale prices can be confusing and you really have to read the fine print. 2 examples tonight , a case of miller beer was on sale for 16.99, 12 packs are on sale for 6.99 each. Thankfully I was paying attention and put back the case for 2 12 packs. I was not attentive enough at the dairy case though. Signage on dairy case was buy 3 Big G cereals get a gallon of Lucerne milk free. No clear signage in the cereal aisle specifying it was only certain sizes of Big G cereal required. I tend not to shop at jewel for this very reason and when I do I still seem to get burned at the register. read more

I saw a buy one get one free under xmas candy, turns out the tag was for soup. How do I know that? Because of all the time wasted waiting for someone to go check and then tell me I'm wrong. This Jewel consistently has very poor produce and meat selections. The meat is also over priced. I get the vibe that this store is the last stop on the truck route. The Director Nino Tatulil of Antioch, IL store is a great boss and works with his employees. He is also a hard worker but finds the time to ask each employees how are you doing and really cares. I would rate him a 5 star* The Front Manager Kristy of Antioch, IL store that is over the baggers and checker isn't as good at checking on how the employees are doing. I would rate her a one star *. This location is getting a facelift. They are doing a nice job of making it more up market. One thing they added was an actual sushi section at the deli counter. This isn't that California roll crap they had before in the deli. They have two Asian guys making the rolls and sushi. I gotta say, it's pretty damn good. I lived in Asia for 5 years. I'm not going to say this is on the same level as the sushi I had over there but for $12, I'm shocked to have something like this in Antioch at a grocery store. I have been shopping at Jewel most of my life-the Lake Forest and Highland Park locations when I lived in that area. Since being in Antioch the last several years this store is my primary grocery. It is the WORST. Most times I leave angry because they are consistently out of everything I want no matter what it is... I've actually abandoned my cart in the middle of the store once because I was so frustrated. The store usually looks like a bomb went off on the shelves. Tonight I went in for 5 items. They were out of 3. The 4th item, creamer, was so far back in the cooler I literally had to shake the shelves to get it to roll to me. I'd give this no stars if I could but the employees are nice. Very dissatisfied with my pb granola purchase that was over a year expired. Took it back only to find out the whole shelf of them were also expired. Why do I prefer the new Mariano's in Gurnee(sometimes, I kinda wish they'd replace Jewel or Piggly Wiggly with Mariano's, PW sucks)? Well, it's a better environment, with its different bars/restaraunts , unfortunately, the Dominick's-replacing-Mariano-locations only have a coffee and drink bar, still better than Jewel. Very disappointed in Antioch Jewel. I went to Jewel in hopes of getting better quality produce even though I would be paying premium prices. What I got was moldy strawberries which when was brought to my attention by the cashier I told him no I did not want. I told him that all thier strawberries we're bad and should be taken out, his response was, they won't listen to me. When I got home the strawberries we're in my bag, apparently he doesn't listen either. We also bought packaged turkey meat. When we got home we were placing the meat in individual serving sizes in zip lock bags as we were finishing up we realized the meat expired amonth and half ago. With just two of the items costing over $10 yes we are going to bring this back. So early Saturday morning we head back to Antioch Jewel. They are very apologetic and tell us to get our items and come back to them (no waiting in line) how kind. We explained we did not want the strawberries because they were all bad. It turns all the rest of the lunch meat was expired too. What a complete wast of our time. read more

First off, the only reason I'm giving this Jewel three stars is because the staff is friendly. Otherwise it would be 1.5, but that's a stretch. So...let's get started. As other reviewers have posted, this location is ALWAYS out of items. I've tried to figure out when is the best time to go, in order to help ensure shelves will be stocked, coolers full, etc., and after 5 years, I've come to the conclusion, it's never going to happen! I'm not looking for obscure items I'd be better off going to a specialty store for, I'm talking everyday, run of the mill things. Don't the department managers watch stock and inventory, check aisles and shelves daily, and based on demand, order more?!? This is not rocket science people! Next, speaking of aisles, this location's are entirely too small, taking into consideration there are ALWAYS employees stocking shelves (even though they don't have stock in so much of what people need), and it's extremely difficult to maneuver around carts, boxes, etc.. This location needs to do some serious thinking surrounding how it does business. The bare bones remodel isn't cutting it. I rarely shop at this Jewel anymore, I leave frustrated and a bit angry every time. When the check out person asks if I found everything I needed, it's always no. So please stop asking.
