I read the reviews on Yelp about the Newport Salons and I made an appointment on 30 MAY 14 for an updo at JF3 Salon. (My son was getting married that day.) The owner, Joseph did my updo and Ashley did my make-up. They both worked a miracle, as I looked 10 years younger! I received so many compliments at the wedding and even my husband of 30 years noticed how good I looked! I returned a week after the wedding for a haircut. It was a 200 mile commute, round trip from Massachusetts, but I had 100% confidence that Joseph knew how to cut hair and style hair - and he did not disappoint. It was well worth the drive. I am currently living in San Diego, but I will only go to have my hair cut and styled at JF3 Salon whenever I am back East. Joseph did an amazing job cutting my hair. Joseph was able to cut my hair so that it still remained long, but the weight of it was gone. The weight of long hair can make hair look so flat. Now I have long hair with volume and without layers. The salon took me as a walk in on a Saturday on a last minute whim to get my hair done for a wedding I was attending. I was assigned a Jr Stylist who was in training, super sweet girl, and Joseph coached her every step of the way. Even though I was a new client from out of town, as a walk in, they made me feel like a regular and I loved the attention by Joseph. It was as if I had a 2 person team on my head. Based on my hair type they suggested a beachy wave style vs a typical blowout. The stylist did a fantastic job. They even instructed me on how to preserve the curls until the time of the event (I went in in the morning but the event was at 5) and it still looked fabulous when it was time to get ready. I wish more salons were this good and this customer oriented. Prices were totally reasonable, and the spa like atmosphere was fun and relaxing. If you're on the fence about coming here, it's a no brainer. read more

They listen and gave me exactly what I asked for in the style I need. I had a cut, glaze and peekaboo highlights with Courtney. This is the first time in a VERY long time that I have LOVED my hair!!!! She listened to exactly what I wanted and understood the look I was going for, based on the photo I brought in...additionally, and this is a huge deal...it didn't take forever and a day!! While I understand color takes time to process and cuts take time for precision, I feel like some stylists take a torturously long time to do hair...she was OUTSTANDING. It has been one day, and I have had 5 people ask who does my hair. While I was in the salon, getting ready to have my hair cut, the power went out on the entire street (and down Thames, as all of the traffic lights were also out when I left). The entire team was highly professional and continued to do their thing...the owner was great and didn't make anyone feel like it was a tragic situation...he had a backup old school method for payment:), and the natural light from the clean, modern and welcoming salon helped with the lack of light situation. I found this salon on Yelp!! It was all the 5 star reviews that really caught my attention. After reading several positive reviews on the salon and the professional staff, I decided to make an appointment with Joseph for a consultation as my hair was really in bad shape, dried out ends and just dull looking. He was very friendly and super knowledgeable on all the endless possibilities and treatments for my hair. He assured me he could have my hair feeling and looking good in no time. I felt very confident after talking with him and made an appointment for a hydrating treatment, wash, cut and blow dry. He gave me a much better cut and style and my hair felt super healthy and shiny afterwards. I was really pleased with the end result. I also received some samples of products to try before buying them which is very generous of the store. I have booked my next appointment already and would highly recommend this salon. I found this salon after reading numerous Yelp reviews. I had requested Tara and was very impressed with her commitment to understanding exactly what it was I was looking for. She spent quite some time at the beginning going over expectations and clarifying what exactly she would be doing. She is very knowledgeable about the various techniques for coloring hair. I went to JF3 for the first time before my Wedding and they were wonderful. I recommended some hair product to help my hair and scalp to be healthier and to this day it has been working. Even though it is a 2 hour drive for me from Connecticut, I have returned post-wedding and plan to for as long as I can everyday I get tons of compliments. I am new to Newport and searched for a new salon for weeks! After seeing all of the positive reviews I decided to schedule an appointment here. I had my usual full foil and a cut with Courtney and she was great! She did an excellent job and made my blonde highlights look very natural, and got right down to the root- which is a problem I usually have with stylists. I have very fine hair that most stylists like to layer, which I really dislike. She did exactly what I asked for and the cut is awesome. She was also extremely personable and conversation came very easily, it was never awkward. My only complaint is that she gave me a deep conditioning treatment, which I didn't ask for and then I was charged for it. I normally get one but would have liked to have been asked first. Besides this, I was extremely happy with my experience here and will definitely be back to see Courtney when I need my highlights touched up! read more

I was in Newport for the wedding and the bride recommended the salon. Joseph did my hair and I couldn't be happier! I showed him two pictures of what I was looking for and he replicated perfectly. I cannot thank the staff at JF3 Salon enough. I have been overseas for the last 5 years and have done far too much experimenting with suggestions. Suffice it to say, I showed up at the salon to make an appointment with what I liked to call Frankenhair! Tara sat me down to take a look at the mess. Noted color, various cuts and my level of discomfort at having to start over with a new stylist. She got me an appointment with Courtney the very next day. My experience was wonderful!!!! The salon is beautiful, the strong communication among all of the staff is readily apparent and they treat everyone with kindness and respect. Courtney returned my hair to a color I was thrilled with and created a cut that, although I wasn't excited about it when she described it, turned out to be PERFECT! Belatedly writing about my experience at JF3 salon with Joseph and Ashley in preparation for my June wedding. I can truly say I have never felt more beautiful and that's saying something for a 60+ years bride! Thank you for making my day so special. Ashley did lashes and make up for me and Joseph did my hair as a partial up-do with extensions. Wish I could fly them both up to Ontario for the wedding blessing we are doing in August!!! I love this salon! I am a military spouse who found Courtney at JF3 a year ago on yelp when we first moved here. I have dark brown hair and she did an excellent job matching my color. Sometimes colorist like to dye my hair black but Courtney got it right the first time. I also take my preteen daughters here to get their haircuts. Tara did an excellent job cutting their hair. Unfortunately, it's time for us to move away. We will miss this salon and hope to find one that will measure up to it's high standards at our next duty station. read more

When I first saw all the good reviews, I decided to make an appointment. I was a little skeptical because when I went inside the salon I didn't see anyone with curly hair and when you have curly hair like me you want someone who understands your hair. Nevertheless I made an appointment for a dye and cut. The lady who cut my hair made a lot of remarks I didn't necessarily like. First of all I had just gotten a pixie cut about a month ago and I had wanted to cut it slightly shorter with the back of my head being really short. I'm not saying she didn't cut it well because she did but I could tell she didn't like my hair cut because she made a comment saying, "Do you want me to cut it feminine or like a guy?" Which was a little surprising since girls don't normally get pixie cuts to look like a guy and then she kept asking me if I was going to straighten my hair. Which would have been fine if I hadn't already discussed that I like my hair curly and I don't use a blow dryer or a flat iron to straighten my hair. I even told her while she was dying my hair that I don't like using any heating products because I don't want to have heat damage. Honestly she didn't even know how to style my hair, all she did was put a few drops of oil in it and used a diffuser, thank goodness she knew to use a diffuser. The point was she clearly didn't pay attention to what I had said and then at the end when she asked if I like the hair color and I told her no because I had asked for her to change my burgundy hair to brown and she said she would be able to do it except that it was BLACK now not brown. She seemed to be upset and when it was time to pay she was extremely rude to me and didn't bother offering me another appointment or anything. She wouldn't even acknowledge the fact that she had promised me chocolate brown and this was clearly black. Overall, the bottom line is if you have curly hair or a pixie cut don't waste your money here because they will keep trying to blow dry your hair and keep implying that you should let your hair grow. And maybe if you don't have curly hair you would not understand this but it is not fun having someone discriminate you based on your hair type or cut. Honestly I just felt uncomfortable at the end when she was cutting my hair and I didn't appreciate her hatred for curly hair. read more

Found this place on Yelp and entered my information online to schedule an appointment. They returned my call the next day and scheduled an appointment for that week. I saw Courtney for a cut, foils and gloss. I had very long hair that I'd been neglecting for months and she gave me a long bob and refreshed my color. She did a fantastic job on the color, super natural and fresh looking. The cut was amazing and the best cut I've had in years. She was very meticulous about cross checking with my hair both wet and dry and actually thinned out the ends with thinning shears which I haven't had anyone do in awhile and makes a world of difference on my thick hair. He asked about the event and what I was wearing, and did a more creative interpretation of my request. This review has been a long time coming. We moved to the Newport area in Nov. 2015. Being military, it's scary to trust someone new. Shortly after we arrived, I put my trust in another salon and am STILL dealing with the repercussions of that choice. From color to cut...it was a nightmare. Thankfully I found JF3. From the get go Joseph, the owner was completely honest with me about how much he could fix the mess the other salon created while maintaining my goal of growing it out. Every person in JF3 is professional and trustworthy. If you are looking for ANY service...chemical, extensions, color, cut, skin care, etc... Look no further. JF3 is your place. Tara is my girl now, but I would trust any of them! I've had several services there and been happy with all of them. I've even taken my daughter to JF3. They have eased my pain of growing out a bad cut. They also carry quality products and are diligent about recording exactly what service you received, down to the color mixture. I wanted to try JF3 for my wedding so I thought why not bring my friend and future MIL for a test run a simple blow out appointment on my bachelorette party weekend. I will never step foot in there again- Each of us got girls that were just in high school that literally the owner had to come by and tell them how to do every single step- I seriously could have just done my own hair as both girls kept on complaining about how much hair my friend and I had. I should have known even the second I sat into my chair and the "apprentice" asked me if she had to wash my hair that was in a wet bun... She also throughout the ordeal of blow drying my hair asked to go to the bathroom- made faces, and even kept messing up curling my hair... My final straw was that she left a rubber glove on her tray and the curling iron as well which obviously started melting and burning... They had no problem at the end charging me $60 for a blow dry with curls with a high school girl that did not even have a clue how to blow dry or curl hair. I was so angry as was my friend and MIL- I had made appointments for my rehearsal dinner but canceled them. I never write poor yelp reviews but I would hate for someone else to have this same experience! I am from Boston and am used to the Dry Bar for $40- and this was just awful I knew more about doing hair and could have saved money doing my own! For them to do this to people especially knowing it was my bachelorette party the owner did not even say sorry or anything or discount the service- I am disgusted! read more
