We are a military family which means that each time we move, I've got to find a new hair salon. Shortly after moving to Newport, I read up on reviews and decided to leave it to chance by sending an email to the salons that sounded the best and seeing who responded first. Lucky me, Curl UP and Dye was the first to respond and after answering a few questions, the receptionist decided to schedule a consult for me with the owner, Jill who has worked in and owned salons in Newport for 30+ years. During our consult, I showed Jill some potential highlight and color options I was considering. She looked through everything, asked some questions, and then very sincerely told me that she could do anything I wanted but that my current hair color was very flattering on me. After about a week of contemplation, I decided to take her professional opinion (an opinion that was very educated and clearly honest, given that she wouldn't make any money from me NOT coloring my hair) and decided to just get a cut. THIS WAS THE BEST CUT I'VE HAD IN MY 51 YEARS OF LIFE (I don't think I realized how subpar my previous cuts have been)!!! I just showed her a photo and she make it happen. I was at a loss as to where to go, and chose to take a chance and book an appointment at Curl Up & Dye, based in part on the good reviews I'd read, as well as how welcoming it always looked when I passed by. The salon is gorgeous, bright, and welcoming. The staff of talented people working here shine just as brightly, and are they ever hard working! This place is all about creating customized magic especially for YOU, whilst at a bustling pace. Somehow they manage to do so while also balancing the needs and desires of several clients at a time, with an air of calm and tranquility. The place hums with magic. It runs like a well oiled machine. The staff functions like an ensemble cast at a top theatrical production. They work together and facilitate one another, while also artfully creating, individually. I arrived with numerous ideas, and Jill helped me to choose a style that was fun and sophisticated, with just a hint of irreverence. She quickly assessed my damaged tresses and deftly went to work, using both scissors and razor to dry-cut a stunning asymmetrical bob with great curl and movement. She accentuated my natural colors of bronze and silver, with a deep accent of rich violet, taking the cut to the next level. "Sassy" is the word three unsolicited people have used to describe it. It was nothing short of transformative, for me. Throughout my appointment, I was well looked after, offered tea, coffee, or water while my color developed, and treated with gracious care. The products they recommend and use in the salon smell insanely good, and deliver on curl, hold, and shine. Jill creates hair that falls into place with little coaxing or fuss. I was desperately in need of a post-COVID hair cut and needed to try a new salon. I was booked with Marissa and after seeing her impressive work on Instagram, I had high hopes. Those hopes were exceeded! Marissa is the best stylist I have ever been to. She is friendly, professional, and the whole time gave advice on what would be best for my hair and why she was cutting it or styling it a certain way. I have a ton of very fine hair and most stylists I have been to complain how difficult my hair is to work with. Marissa wasn't intimidated, in fact she complemented how full it is which made me feel really good. I now have a very cute cut and style and can't wait to return. Went here recently for a change in hairstyle as I'm having a baby soon and wanted something short and low-maintenance. I live close enough to the salon to walk to and came highly recommended. Meghan (sp?) was the one handling my haircut and was constantly making sure it was cut at the right length and I was happy with it. She was even sweet enough to offer a fix if I wasn't happy with it after a few days; it usually takes that much time for me to get used to a new look but I really liked it and didn't feel the need to fix anything. Price wise, it was a bit more than what I usually pay for a haircut, but I was happy and Meghan was really sweet so it really didn't bother me that much. I've also had some waxing done here and was happy with the service too. Waxing here was much cheaper here than where I usually went AND not far from my house! Just an FYI, the waxing person (can't remember her name at the moment) is cash only so be sure to stop by the ATM beforehand. I'll definitely be back! read more

Had a lash tint. 35 for a 15 minute treatment on a bed in the middle of a back walkway. Exterior door opening and closing feet away. Cold air rushes in. My heart is still pounding from laying there while the technician breathed six inches from my face for ten minutes, had a phone conversation and other conversations with people walking through heavy-footed. I am not a nervous person but it is not at all relaxing (and actually totally unnerving) having eyes closed while all this is happening around. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere there is a private room with a technician who gives you space while you wait for the dye to take. read more

She has been consistent with her hard work and effort with each client. Arielle was recommended to me by several people in town. She started becoming very popular within Aquidneck Island. I have nothing but good things to say about Curl Up & Dye. I've had two great experiences here. Dan gave me a great haircut and style, and even advised me on color for a future appointment. He was super nice, talkative, and knows what he's doing behind the scissors. Megan is amazing. I made an appointment with her to get my hair bleached and toned silver. This process is daunting, and is rarely achieved in one session; however, we were determined. She bleached my hair and all would have gone perfectly had it not been for a combination of lingering fashion color and well water that had I been in unknowingly showering in (I live in Europe). Essentially, half of my hair bleached perfectly, while the other half was a nightmarish green. Megan recommended a few color options, since we couldn't get my dream silver. We chose to dye it dark as this would be the healthiest route for my hair. Megan was completely cool and professional under pressure and made me feel better about the situation. TL;DR - she turned something horrific into something beautiful and healthy. I used to live in Los Angeles, where you pay an arm and a leg for a haircut and color. Coming to Curl Up & Dye, a place where price is reasonable and the stylists are talented, is a breath of fresh air. I walked in and was instantly impressed with the new location and friendly staff. I was paired up with Dan Carlin and I can't be more happy! I came in for a cut, color, and highlight. I was assigned Kristen as my stylist. I have naturally really dark brown hair, almost black, and it had gotten pretty long so I wanted a good chunk of it cut off, about 4"-6", and dyed lighter brown with very subtle highlights. (I am in the military so dramatic highlights are normally frowned upon). Never in my time getting my hair dyed have I had to do a bleach wash but Kristen was insistent that it was the only way to get any color in my hair. It was extremely pungent and I could just feel my hair dying a slow death as she washed my hair with bleach. She then proceeded with the color and highlight. I specifically told her that I only wanted the highlights 2 shades lighter than the all over color. The highlights turned out to be very dramatic blonde, about 10 shades lighter than I specified. The cut is the only thing she did right and thus the second star. But now I have to find another salon to fix the color so that I don't show up to my command out of uniform regulations. Another note, the salon itself and the other stylists were quite unprofessional. One stylist kept going around asking if anyone has seen her money because she left it in her bra and it fell out somewhere. They are all independent contractors so each person could quote you a different price for services. My total came out to $160 which isn't a bad price had it come out right but now I have to go spend another $100 getting it fixed. I would not recommend this salon to anyone I know nor would I ever return. read more

Love Curl Up and Dye! First off, the name is perfect, second, I had a really nice experience getting my first post-quarantine cut here. I scheduled with my stylist and arrived just about 5 minutes early. They have a bench outside with their sandwich board and a note that asks you to wait outside and your stylist will come and get you when they're ready. Masks required for clients and all staff were wearing masks and 6 feet apart. They sprayed down the surfaces and chairs before and after I had touched them, sanitizer by the door, etc. Oh, and did I mention that my fresh little pixie looks chic and good as new?
