Sometimes I feel bad writing a review for lunch service, especially when I only had a sandwich. But here we go... I was in the area and, thanks to Yelp, I stopped at JG's. It's a quaint little train station right downtown with surprisingly adequate parking. But I think the quaintness ends at the door. The inside decor felt a little like grandma's place, with terrible plastic-like table clothes. The sandwich was Dijon chicken with bacon, or something along those lines. I'm not sure how it's possible when Dijon is in the mix, but it was bland. How does that happen?!? The chips that came with it were well seasoned. The service was excellent. I was on a bit of a schedule, and I was in and out there very quickly. Attentive, polite, and efficient. I found the traffic of clean dish-racks moving back and forth through the dining room to the bar a bit odd. But I guess there's probably no other way from point A to B. I might try this place again if I'm in town for dinner (there are a lot of great reviews out there) but not sure this is on my repeat list for lunch. read more

Just had a great dinner here. I always get the salmon; it is the best I think I have ever had anywhere. It is served HOT and comes with a great sauce that is good with the salmon and makes the great bread rolls taste wonderful, too. The wedding soup was very good. I love the cheesecake here, as well. It's a nice big piece. I didn't care for the strawberry topping though. read more

Love the history of this building. Eating inside an old train station is an experience in itself. Great food and good selection of drinks. The tiramisu is pretty good as well. Love coming here in the summer and sitting outside on their covered patio. read more

Stopped in for lunch, at the recommendation of a friend, as he knows I am a fan of both trains and train stations, and this restaurant is located inside a very cool, and historic train station built in 1892. For lunch I ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, off of the specials menu, and it included soup or salad, and I chose the Italian Wedding Soup. The soup arrived first, and it was excellent, and was served with some hot rolls w/butter. After I finished the soup, my pot pie arrived, and it was a very light, and flaky square crust covering a round bowl filled with veggies and chicken in a light gravy/broth. It was also excellent. I enjoyed my lunch here, and afterwards I explored the old station both inside and out. Also, if you get a chance, check out the mural painted on the wall behind the station, it was very interesting, and showed some of the local history, including the railroad heritage. read more

Perfect gem tucked away in Tarentum. Consistently delicious food and drinks, fast service and regularly changing specials. I recommend the Cajun combo, and the drunken muscles! Huge pork chops, and perfectly cooked fresh calamari. If you like train history, check out all of the historic art on the wall and dine while trains go by. read more

I haven't been to Tarentum Station in awhile. I was very impressed with the food! I had the roasted salmon and it was cooked perfectly with bold flavors. I had a side of mushroom risotto which was creamy and flavorful. We also had fried shrimp and fried zucchini. They were all very delicious. We especially liked the marinara sauce that was served with the zucchini. I will certainly return to this restaurant the next time I'm in town. read more

Stopped in while we were exploring the area and it seemed like a nice place. We sat in the bar area and were taken care of by the bartender. He was very friendly and answered all questions that we had on the menu. The potato skins portion is huge and very tasty. We also had the shrimp cocktail and it was not overcooked and had a good flavor to it. I mist say my steak salad was unexpected when it arrived to the table. Caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms were on it as well as the normal things like tomatoes fries and cheese. It was fantastic. Next time and it will be soon, we cant wait to try the entrees. What a great place! Love that they took a train station from the late 1800's and created this great restaurant with lots of atmosphere and preserving History. Pittsburgh has the mentality to demolish the old and replace it with meaningless architect, thumbs up for saving this grand building. Other parts of the country it's not acceptable so thanks for saving this landmark. It was a wonderful experience from the moment we pulled into the parking lot. We where greeted with a warm welcome from the owner and staff. We had a Meetup group of 7 and they were very accommodating to take care of us. Everyone raved about their choices in food selections. Everything is made to order so if you have to wait a little it's worth it. Better than the cookie cutter type food served in many restaurants. Thanks for everything! read more

Horribly over priced for mediocre food at best. This is not a fine dining restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh. There are at least 6 other restaurants within 5-10 minute drive withe better food at half the price. read more

A converted train station, this is a surprisingly good restaurant. I ate their Ahi tuna with risotto, and it was awesome. My dining companion had some kind of pasta special with garlic, and she complained that it wasn't garlicky enough for her, so if you're a major garlic-aholic, you may be disappointed. read more

It's a charming old train station remodeled. The servers are great. If you can be seated in William's section, then you will be well-taken care of. The Drunken Mussels are delicious and ample to share if you're willing. The scallops are moist and tasty as long as you are ready to eat them when they are served. I had not finished my mussels yet so the scallops were taken back to the kitchen "to keep warm." When the were served they were dried out and soggy. The wine selection is also quite nice. Love this place! It's an old train station, so cool. The interior is very nice and outside had a nice patio. We were there for lunch. They had a great menu, definitely not typical bar food. I had a Reuben to die for! Marbled rye and huge corned beef. The manager came and checked on us and then told us the history of the place. Quite the cordial chap. Highly recommend ++++ read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant, which is a converted train station but the food wasn't great and wasn't worth the price. I really liked their menu options and was torn between the eggplant rollatini, salmon, or flounder stuffed crab. The waitress recommended the flounder stuffed with crab but I was very disappointed in it. It had almost no flavor. I couldn't finish my meal and I wasn't interested in finishing it, which for me is a rarity. The side of broccoli was served in a pool of butter and again wasn't seasoned correctly, no flavor. I also ordered a twice baked potato. Was very excited to see that on the menu as a side option but after having several bites which were good, I discovered there was bacon inside it, which I don't eat. I thought they should have indicated that on the menu in case you were a vegetarian or don't eat pork. An important disclosure, is that I was the only one who didn't seem to enjoy my meal (perhaps because I was the only one who didn't order steak?). For the price, there are better restaurant options in the area (although perhaps not directly in Tarentum). No complaints about the service which was great and the atmosphere was nice. This was my second time here. My boyfriend and I decided to go somewhere local but different and so glad we decided to go to the Tarentum Station. I got the stuffed flounder (fantastic) and he got the New York Strip. Our server was very nice, efficient, friendly and prompt. Highly recommend going there. Cool little restaurant on the railroad tracks and made out of a transformed train station. Nice bar, quaint dining area. All the staff were overly nice with bartenders and servers beyond the one assigned to our table welcoming us to the restaurant and telling us to enjoy our meal etc. For starters I had stuffed banana peppers which were tasty and the perfect amount of spicy. I also had wedding soup which was ok but nothing more. For an entree I had "Louisiana chicken" which was cajun chicken with crab meat and a hollandaise sauce... very tasty. My wife got a filet that was as tender as you could imagine, but had somewhat of an odd taste to it. Almost like a fishy taste, which obviously isn't ideal but it's almost as if they're aware of if because they give you an "au jus" (it's beef gravy) to dip in, but it's actually good that way. My husband and I went to Tarentum Train Station in the summertime for our anniversary and it was wonderful!! They did have outside seating with a guitar playing guy who was really great! The food was the Best!! I had some kind of seafood w/pasta and my husband had steak. All of the food really was oh so good! At the end we had creme brallee ... Mmmmm!!! Actually we are going there tonight for another really delicious meal for my husband's birthday in January. The decor was nice too, like a pub. And there is an upstairs with tables and chairs, very nice. read more

This transformed train station is very inviting inside. It's deceiving from the outside since it looks like a run down train stop...however like i said the inside has a very warm feel to it. It is a bit cramped and I had to make my mother get up to let me past since her chair and another tables chair were blocking me into a corner but the food and service made up for it. I love the "finer" dining experience they have and the holiday decorations were beautiful. I was able to sample 5 different dishes since we were a party of 4. We ordered the bruschetta to start which was very tasty, and I ordered a wedge salad which was actually very good the blue cheese was rich and was some of the best bleu cheese I've ever had. (I'm very picky about bleu cheese). I tried my husbands Chicken Romano which was delicious and my mother's Cajun dish which was Cajun shrimp, beef tips and scallops and it was EXCELLENT. My dish was a vegetable pasta with a garlic and olive oil sauce. I wasn't as much of a fan, it was a little bland...but I may have also not been prepared for this dish, as I had wanted a richer pasta like Alfredo in the first place. I still enjoyed my experience and absolutely loved everyone else meals. I'll be going back again to try a different dish. My parents are there once or twice a month and are very big fans and claim they've never had anything they didn't like so I will have to find out for myself. read more

I was dragged to this place a second time after a crappy first experience and never wanting to go again. The food is over priced and has no taste! I asked the waiter for lemon for my water. A few minutes her returned with the lemons...in his HAND! I have never in my life had someone in a restaurant bring be something like that in their hand! Seriously wtf!??! I ordered dessert hoping it was better than my overpriced and tasteless entree. The apple dumpling was delicious...right up until the hair I found in my mouth. When we brought this to our waiters attention he removed the haired one from the bill and gave me one to take home, which he charged me for! I have had better service at Olive Garden or effffing Pizza Hut for that matter! Nice facility but shouldn't be a restaurant especially at this price point if their food and service sucks...which it does!!! read more
