Main St., Market Sq and Lowrey Place in the center of Newington, CT. Parking is plentiful in the Square's large parking lot. There are plenty of various seating options in the form of couches, upholstered chairs, table/chair groupings, and counter-style seats by the windows. We saw a few medium sized groups gabbing away at the upholstered seat area and a few industrious folks clattering away on their laptops. We each went with an Avocado Toast (@ $9) with mashed avocado, diced egg, diced tomato, bacon crumbles, cilantro, and Everything bagel seasoning blanketing a big slice of toasted rye. Seriously, one of the best breakfasts we had this year. I went with a small cold brew coffee and a shot of sugar-free caramel ($4.25) while my wife went with a small light roast coffee ($3). And who would have thought that a little coffee shop nestled in downtown Hartford would end up being one of the top three coffee shops we've tried on the entire East Coast. There was just something real about this place. We walked in and had the chance to meet the owner, who shared his story with us--how he got into coffee during COVID and the vision behind the shop. You could immediately tell this wasn't a place that was just put together to sell coffee. It was personal. The shop itself was beautiful. You could see that it was made with a genuine love for his culture and Puerto Rico which, if you've never been, is itself a little piece of heaven on Earth. The space felt like an expression of the owner's identity and you can feel that the owner is sharing a part of themselves with their customers and the community. Then we found out that the tattoo shop in the back is owned by his wife, who actually designed the coffee shop for him. What a talented couple... And I haven't even gotten to the coffee. You could see the precision that went into making the latte. Even the choice of espresso was intentional. Instead of using the typical darker-roasted espresso beans you find at so many coffee shops, he uses a medium roast from a local roaster that uses Colombian beans. It allowed the actual flavor of the espresso to come through and gave it a character that felt much closer to the island. I also always keep an eye out on how the milk is frothed and the temperature and texture came out perfect. The funny part is that I wasn't even planning to find great coffee in Hartford. I simply needed somewhere to charge my car, and somehow that stop turned into one of the best coffee experiences of our entire road trip. We also happened to get incredibly lucky. We came on a day they're typically closed, but they had opened because a reggae band was playing out in the street. And let me tell you--the live reggae was some of the best we've heard. Excellent coffee, a beautiful space, a great story behind it, and reggae playing in the streets of Hartford. What a treat.

Since it was a busy morning the online order feature is super handy to save time but if you have time, the atmosphere in the cafe is inviting and love how they serve drinks and food on real dinnerware (coffee tastes better in a ceramic mug than cardboard cup wouldn't you say?). Everything was delicious and can see myself stopping for a flavored latte again some time. Bonus! The layout is designed where in the center you may order your coffee, on the left you can browse through their books, and on the right they have a used books section. First, I noticed how on theme their drinks are. For instance there's a drink called "First Chapter" and another called "Wicked Debut", among many others. I got the Wicked Debut, iced it tasted like Nutella in an iced coffee. Very tasty! The books are the newest trendy releases. If you're having a hard time deciding on what to read, and you're overwhelmed by the choices at traditional bookstores, it'll be much easier to make your pick here. Every part of this cafe is designed with books on mind. They have a very cute backdrop designed with books of course. Additionally you'll find totes, bookmarks and more. I wasn't sure how cozy it would feel, and honestly, I was right. The layout just didn't do it for me. Most of the seating is along the windows, and it didn't really give me that cozy coffee-shop feeling where you want to nestle in with your cup and stay awhile. But I thought, okay, let's try the coffee! They have some fun latte combinations, so I went with one of their popular ones. Then I found out they don't make their own syrups and immediately thought, "Oh no... this is going to be sweet." And yep--it was definitely on the sweeter side. My latte was also, at best, warm rather than hot. My husband loved his coffee, but he only drinks coffee maybe once or twice a week, so he doesn't quite understand my level of coffee expectations. The staff was really nice and pleasant, which I appreciated. Overall, I'd say it's a good, average local coffee spot. Nothing bad, but nothing that made me think, "Yep, I need to come back here."
