Yelp as usual has not put Jim Dennys new location - shame on Yelp. The new location is at New Helvetia on Broadway and 18th Street.

Today was the final day for Jim Denny's and Sacramento showed up. They opened at 11am and there was already a line out the door. Not only was their regular team there working as hard as they could but other local chefs, bartenders, and friends came to help feed the community one more time. Unfortunately, I arrived right after 2pm and joined the line only to find out about fifteen minutes later that the had completely sold out of food. The owner N'Gina gave a beautiful speech and the restaurant started clearing out of regular diners. I stayed to give my thanks and was blown away by the community and love that came through. They were still serving drinks and you could see how much love there was for N'Gina and this amazing business. So many people came through just to say thank you and wish her luck on her future endeavours. I found a spot at the bar and hung out for a couple hours talking to other chefs, business owners, and customers and everyone was not ready to say goodbye to this amazing establishment and the incredible food N'Gina brought to the restaurant. Their team ended up giving me a bowl of their staff dinner- fries, mac and cheese and pulled pork and I was so thankful for one last taste of this amazing restaurant before they closed for good. read more

Another one crossed off my foodie bucket list! I've been meaning to visit Jim Denny's for a while now, and ever since South closed (RIP), I knew I had to make my way over once I heard the iconic Mrs. N'Gina Guyton had taken over this beloved Sacramento spot. I'm such a fan of her food! My boyfriend and I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon about an hour before closing, and to our surprise, the owner herself took our order -- such a treat! I ordered the shrimp po' boy with a side of fried cauliflower, while he got the double patty cheeseburger with mac & cheese. We also tried their house-made lemonade and an Arnold Palmer. Here's how everything rated: * Shrimp Po' Boy: 3.75/5 * Double Cheeseburger: 3.5/5 * Mac & Cheese: 4.5/5 * Fried Cauliflower: 3.5/5 The shrimp had a great crust, and that romesco sauce with the buttery fried cauliflower was seriously addictive. The burger had a nice kick thanks to the hot link tucked inside, and the mac & cheese? So creamy and cheesy--definitely a standout. The lemonade leaned more tart than sweet, and the Arnold Palmer was refreshingly solid. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient. I loved that they kept the classic diner booths, vintage signs, and old-school decor--it all added to the charm, especially with the throwback jams playing in the background. Already planning my return to try the catfish sandwich, honey butter cornbread, and hopefully get my hands on one of their desserts next time--they were all sold out by the time we arrived! Jim Dennys is such an underrated spot! It has such a cute vibe with the indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. We sat outside since we had our pup and were asked if we wanted water for our girl. Super nice! I ordered the American and my boyfriend did the same, but as a double while I got the single. We shared garlic fries and a side of mac and cheese. It wasn't too busy on a Friday night for an earlier dinner. We got our food pretty quickly and it was great! The burgers are not too heavy or greasy which we loved! It was fresh and seasoned very well. The fries were crispy and had all the garlic you needed. The mac and cheese was creamy and gooey. Definitely something that's comfy and warm. Overall, definitely will be coming back when craving a good burger and look forward to trying the other items! read more

I saw the positive reviews on Yelp and always enjoyed the food at the owner's previous restaurant so I knew it was going to be good. The ambiance was mostly original , we enjoyed sitting indoors at the counter. Surprisingly it was fairly quiet on a Friday evening. I think we may have missed the lunch crowd. A few people came in to order non-alcoholic drinks to go. Another group enjoyed their food in the spacious outdoor patio . My friend ordered the American cheese bacon burger with a side of French fries. I ordered the shrimp Po Boy with a side of onion rings. Sides are a separate order and a charge starting at $6. The owner said she was out of her beers on tap, and low on alcohol but she did have Coors Light and enough vodka to make me a lemon drop which surprisingly hit! My Po Boy was literally the best I have ever had. The shrimp were large, lightly battered, crispy and perfectly seasoned. Served on a semisweet roll with lettuce and tomatoes and a tarter sauce style spread. Simply scrumptious! My friend enjoyed his cheese burger and fries as well. Craving a good burger so i checked yelp and jim denny popped up. I remember days of old going her for the hubcap pancakes. Saw a pic of the american and knew i needed to try it. Walked in to a cool welcoming CLEAN restaurant. It was 4 pm so not quite dinner time suited me fine. Knew what i wanted and placed my order. American w fries The gal offered me a glass of cold water while i waited. Now that was a cool refreshing old fashioned hospitable gesture which i really appreciated. I dont drink sodas or alcohol so that really hit the spot. About 10 mine later i get my food wrapped up in a togo container w napkins and ketchup. 5 stars so far Tear into the fries first snd they were piping hot. Freshly cooked. Love it. Perfectly seasoned and crispy. Burger looked so good. The bun was so soft and not soggy at all. Hate a soggy bun. Took my first bite and boom, This is what i was craving. I absolutely love this place every time I'm in Sacramento. I try to go at least once. So far, I have only had the burger because the cheeseburger is one of the best I have ever eaten! I have sent many of my coworkers to eat over there and I'm being told that the codfish sandwich is incredible so that's next on my list. I will say I'm a little disappointed in the onion rings. They taste good. They're just not as crispy as I would like. You can sit either inside which is small diner counter seating or you can sit outside. There is a patio area with wooden tables and chairs and some umbrellas. I prefer sitting outside on a nice day. Just make sure you are able to grab an umbrella table. the sun gets really hot out there . I think the operating hours need to be updated. If you know, you know! Just in case you don't, I will explain.. 4th stop on tour and this is definitely a must try spot. It's a small spot, but the taste of the food had big bold flavor!! We enjoyed a chicken/bacon sandwich top with lettuce, pickles and homemade ranch served with a side of fries. (I opted to remove bacon). The owners were very friendly. It's so closed to our house and my husband is a big burger place so for Father's Day he wanted to go here bc he heard that the owner from south recently took over this spot. There are tons of seatings outside and maybe 7-8 seats at the bar. They pump A lot of AC so we decided to sit outside. Although it was hot, there are covers on top to block out the sun for us. If they can add misters that would be such as experience. The problem with sitting outside is that you might have to deal with more animals than you'd like. While sitting out here, I had a few flies landed on me. There was a spider webbing around as well. We got here at 12pm and there was parking meter on the Sunday is free. We walked to the front, ordered and then took a seat outside. I recommend this bc this spot is small and there was only 1 staff in the front. Again I recommend walking to the bar and order and then go sit outside if you want to sit outdoors. The food is great. We got an American burger $12, the shrimp po boy $15/16 (I don't remember the exact number), and a hot dog for our daughter $10. The shrimp po boy is good but a bit small for $15/16. If i come back I'm getting the burger. We also got a garlic fries which wasn't too garlicky. It was more like here are some fries and they put 2tbsp of garlic mix on top. I think it's $6. Our bill came out to be $48 ish dollars before tips. Overall, I recommend coming a little early bc they ran out a few items on the menu but when in doubt I recommend 100% to get the American burger. read more

Torn between sharing this gem with the world and gatekeeping this place to myself. Today I tasted the best burger and fries to ever grace my tongue. I never thought I would be amazed by fries but they proved me wrong. Not only were they salted, they were garlicky and PACKED with flavor in each and every bite. The burger was swimming with big savory flavors from the salty cheddar cheese to the two thick seasoned beef patties and hot link. The sauce was dripping from the burger. The coleslaw added a little bit of a crunch. The cheese was so melty that it was dripping from the burger right along with the sauce. Still wrapping my mind around the flavors I witnessed. The only thing that could've excelled my expectations would've been a hint of sweetness like a sweet heat bbq sauce that would've provided a spicy sweet twang to the burger. That would've done the burger in, even without it, still the best I've ever tasted. On the way to Tahoe we stopped by Jim Dennys for lunch and will definitely be our go-to stop from now on! The burgers were delicious, well-flavored and juicy. The salad was yummy thanks to cornbread croutons and well fried chicken. And the pancakes were fluffy and packed with cinnamon! The best part was that the owner, N'Gina, provided amazing service. The name Jim Dennys evokes the burger history of Sacramento. N'Gina has taken the spirit and nostalgia of Jim Dennys and moved it forward. When we ate here, we got the American Burger, the Southern Daddy, the Bird is the Word, the Tejas hot dog, the garlic fries, the onion rings, the Grown Ass Wings, and a few sodas. I will say the service here isn't the focus. They do take your order at the table as opposed to N'Gina's previous restaurant, but the service still needs help. The $3 cans of soda showed up slightly below room temp but not cold enough to enjoy on their own. One of us didn't get a soda and it took our server 10 minutes to bring it while the other 3 of us had ours. And it was slammed (about 2pm in the afternoon). The highlights were the Grown Assorted wings and the classic cheeseburger. The wings were seasoned very well, crispy and the wings are full wings (not segmented). The cheeseburger here needed to be good to honor the name Jim Denny and it does. The Frida and the onion rings were good. The fried chicken sandwich was good. The Southern Daddy was not as successful. The hot link could have been more punchy and all the stuff on there just muffled together. Less would be more with this option. I heard that Miss N'Gina Guyton revamped this spot and I knew I just had to stop in. She doesn't disappoint!! Hubs and I sat at the indoor bench area for a while and admired the old signs for 25 cent food items. Crazy! We decided to ultimately take our meal outside. We chatted with the waitress about the 90's R&B they had playing and it turns out it was her Playlist! I love that, they were serving up some throwbacks that I hadn't heard in a while. The outdoor area is small so if you're not on the patio proper, you're kind of in a parking lot. I figure this is a temporary solution till they get stuff squared away, but don't let that be a deterrent. The food is delicious! Hubs got the fried chicken sando and onion rings. The fried chicken is always delicious, but the onion rings were perfection. Fried to a nice crunch, mildly sweet but not overwhelmingly so. I loved the Hey Papi, even though it's not the most beautiful presentation and definitely messy. The brussels sprout app is so good - cooked to al dente with nice color on the outside. They're back! However, this was my first time there! LOL. I work just down the street, so I had heard about their legendary burgers since before their temporary closure. My coworkers and I finally got to try the famous Jim Dennys. A couple things to know- dine in only (only outdoor seating available). No cash accepted! Cards and Apple Pay/ e-wallets only. Also, every item is ordered individually (I.e. burgers do not come with fries). Also, they sadly do not offer milkshakes here. Ok, what they do offer is a nice, spacious outdoor setting (it's a parking lot, but it's shaded at least)! Their burgers are huge. I believe they all default to doubles. No alcohol here, but they do have an interesting selection of mock tails. They also have canned sodas that they serve with a cup of ice. They also had kombucha on the menu and lemonade. It took a little while to get our food, but it makes sense since they are just getting underway again. Our servers were nice and attentive. They also split the bill for us which was convenient. I liked the food and would definitely come back! I do wonder how the outdoor only seating is going to work out in bad weather though. Absolutely amazing, we came to Jim Dennys back when it was under previous ownership along time ago (I was probably 13 then). It was delicious then, and even better now. The owner puts a unique twist on ur not so average diner experience. We all got their burger, I decided to get the garlic fries which were yummy, you have to try the ranch too! Everything is home made and it seriously shows. They were out of cornbread and Brussel sprouts, so we will definitely be back for those! Service is amazing, very one on one experience since it is a counter style restaurant. A little cramped in there but what can you expect for such a cool/old piece of history? First time to the refreshed Jim Dennys. Indoor and outdoor seating were available. We started out inside. I noticed that the fixed stools inside were low relative to the counter. I'm short, so I would end up like like kid at the counter. Outside it is. The patio has a good number of 2 to 4 person tables and they play nice tunes outside to counter the traffic sounds. I guess since it's fall and the 100 degree days are behind us, they moved the tables out onto the uncovered part of the patio. Hopefully, that area will also have some shade in the future. We liked the warmth of the sun on a cool day, but it was a bit bright. We had the Gwen and Georgia mocktails while we decided our order. Both were tasty. Our server was friendly and attentive. We had the American, side of chili, and the Caesar salad. It did not take long for our food to come out. The burger was flavorful, juicy, and not overly sauced. The side of chili is a good size bowl and very tasty. We got raw onions with ours. It was a bit strong. Next time we'll get green onions. I liked the Caesar salad. The dressing was really good. The cornbread croutons are a good idea, but I wished they were not cool like they just came out of the fridge. The chicken was flavorful and satisfying. We don't normally get dessert at lunch. The server mentioned the addition of the layered strawberry shortcake and we couldn't resist. It had layers of strawberry, biscuit crumbles, and whipped cream. What is not to like? I really liked how cute this place was. Under new ownership, this lot was transformed into a nice diner. The staff accommodated our large party of 12 last minute for a double birthday. The server said she would only do one tab to save the trouble later, which should be noteworthy for large parties who need to get the money together beforehand. We had an array of things. I ordered the American burger and it was made perfectly, but needed a little more dressing . They were very generous with the sauces, and only charged us for barbecue. The sandwiches come separate from the sides which can make for a pretty expensive meal $12 for the burger + $9 for fries, which makes $21 dollars for a meal for example. The food is delicious and my team and I will definitely come back again. FYI: The Brussels sprouts with the anchovy sauce was amazing. The fries were good but I don't marvel over fries, since I don't really like them. My friends loved the cod sandwich ! Fries under the chilli cheese was also good. This chilli has a tangy and or sour taste. Friend picked at the chilli cheese fries and left the majority on the table. He didn't like it to say the least. In fact he said the chilli ruined the fries. It was my first time eating the chili and will be the last. It was off putting to me. The corn bread was dry and didn't get served with the advertised honey butter. Instead they offered regular butter. Who knows if the honey butter would have elevated the corn bread. Ambience was nice. We sat across the kitchen door so we got to listen to the kitchens staff Playlist. From what sounded like 80s japanese pop to more 90s or 2000s r&b. Food review: Me and my boyfriend ordered one Breakfast burrito with sausage links as our protein, Nashville Bird is the Word chicken sandwich with garlic parm cheese, and a side of their Mac n cheese. The burrito was very filling-- I only ate half of the burrito before asking for a to-go box for the other half. My boyfriend DEVOURED the chicken sandwich. I've been here a few times for the amazing solid diner food. Imagine your favorite old school joint that serves burgers, fries, hot dogs... but gourmet with great service and rad vibe... Jim Dennys got it. When I went today I asked Chef N'Gina what I should get as I sat at indoors at the counter: shrimp and grits. So what did I order for lunch? A burger with onion rings... and shrimp and grits to go. My to go food was my dinner but man... I needed to try it. As a kid I found my love for Southern/Cajun/Creole cuisine at the unauthentic Cheesecake Factory with their jambalaya. Hooked as a high schooler in the 90's! Over the decades I searched out good Cajun cuisine... hits and misses but then I finally found myself in New Orleans last spring... heaven! They had a busy day and unfortunately were out of burgers and fries, so we ordered the Hey Papi hot dog and the Bird is the Word fried chicken sandwich. The hot dog comes with a mango salsa and fuego takis and I really liked the flavor combination and crunchy texture. The fried chicken sandwich is the best fried chicken I've ever had. Ironically, we made a wrong turn and stumbled upon the best burger in Sacramento. The American double cheeseburger was incredible. Onion rings were authentically good. Hand made. I recommend this place 200%! I was happy to hear the owner of South took over this spot. I took my friend here for lunch and she loves it when I take her to local haunts. From the first sip of our mocktails to the first bite of food, we knew we were coming back! My friend had the American burger with garlic fries and I had the Chad hot dog with onion rings. We shared so we could both experience the food. Even tho we were full, we contemplated dessert but passed when they did not have banana pudding. Another reason to come back! This place is much smaller than I thought. Like a mini-diner with a few seats. We had breakfast hear and while it was good, I wish they had more options. Their burgers looked good but we didn't try them. Also it was a bit cold but maybe that's due to the size. I did like that it was a historical diner, so that was interesting. I have had the cheese burger, the bird, and the no cheat days veggie sandwich. Each boasting big flavor and quality ingredients. The double cheese burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and onion is just your classic burger. The flavor is rich. The Patty's are a sensible size and well seasoned. The bird is one of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever had. It had been brined for maximum moistness and battered and fried to perfection. The slaw and sauce on this really takes it over the top. The no cheat days veggie sandwich was maybe my least favorite of the trio. I would try it again but the one I had seems to have been rushed, as I was there on a bit of a busier day. But I liked a lot of the flavors. The only thing I am not a fan of is the sprouts they put on it. Just a bit too much, and those are questionable ingredients to add these days anyway. The fries and onion rings are perfection. The fries are not quite shoestring, but they are nice, thin and slightly battered which gives them a good crunch and lots of flavor. The onion rings are thick cut and seem to be beer battered but if they are not a beer batter then the batter is nicely seasoned. Something I still need to plan to try is the chili fries, and the Friday fried chicken which is available for dine in only and I have heard the wait can be quite long due to the popularity of it.
