If you are looking for bad service , do not come here. Today, I was introduced to this gem of a community diner by a friend. Right away, Mama Goose (the waitress confessed this as her nickname) greeted me with a no nonsense and friendly attitude. This is a person you would hope to greet you, and at the same time you would never want to cross. The interior was very throwback to a time when this diner likely first experienced its hay-day several decades ago. Everything was clean, and the bathroom was so big, it was the size of my first apartment in San Francisco. Water refills were fast, and I ordered an omelette with no meat. It was very tasty, but the potatoes really stole the show with its perfectly crisp and seasoned portions. The prices are very fair/affordable. I felt welcomed here, just like I was visiting a friend in their home. It is clear that regular patrons keep coming back, and all are remembered by the staff. This is one of those restaurants that I have probably driven by hundreds of times in the 20+ years I've lived in Sacramento. It's the last day of my PTO, my car is getting fixed down the street, and figured I'd give it a chance I know it's been here forever, and it showed.... literally everyone who came in after me was addressed by either their first name or as "Mr. Smith." So...a lot of regulars. I pigged out...ordered the chili cheese omelette with a pancake on the side. The omelette was good...not the best I've had, but would not mind returning for it. The breakfast potatoes were near perfect....hot, crispy on the outside and soft on the middle. Just cut down on the seasoning, as the delicious potatoes were a tad salty. My family and I stopped into Sammy's for the breakfast on Saturday for the first time. It's close to our house and it's across the street from another Del Paso Heights staple - Lil Joe's. We ordered the Kids French Toast, Prime Rib Skillet and the Low Calorie Plate. Everything was really good and seasoned well - I especially liked the fruit salad that came with the Low Calorie Plate - it wasn't the boring fruit like you'd expect. The Prime Rib Skillet was a huge portion and the Low Calorie Plate was a great mix of flavors without making me feel too full. While we did enjoy our food and service was great as well - very family oriented - we saw at least 3 generations working, the place needed a deep clean. I would have given 5 stars, but there were a few things I noticed that threw me off. Is that going to stop me from coming back? No, because the food speaks for itself and it's down the street from our house. We will definitely be back soon! read more

As others have said, great diner in Sac that opens early and serves really tasty breakfasts. We stopped by right when it opened on the weekend and grabbed a booth and quickly got some hot diner coffee and tall cups of ice water. Service was super friendly and relaxed. We dove into the 2 egg breakfast, which featured perfectly cooked over easy eggs, crispy hash browns (that were a little greasy but fine for me as they were nicely seasoned), crispy bacon and crunchy sourdough toast. Hot sauce and ketchup were on the tables as condiments, along with packets of smuckers jam. Also tried the Cal slam with 2 eggs over easy, thick cut ham, hash browns and 2 large fluffy pancakes topped with butter. Another solid breakfast for sure. Our coffee cups stayed full throughout breakfast and service was appropriately attentive as well. Overall, an excellent experience and look forward to coming back again soon! read more

Fantastic find alert for breakfast or brunch in NorCal: Sammy's Diner in Sacramento, CA! Was craving an early breakfast before my trade show in downtown today and stumbled upon this great breakfast diner spot, originally opened in 1944, a bit northeast of Old Sac. Nostalgic vibes but still, in the most positive way of reading this comment: not showing its age at all . Ample free parking available, too. Things were a bit quiet in the diner when I visited, probably because I arrived around 6am and Sacramento weather was rainy at the time, but this spot is capable of hosting a lively and sizable crowd of patrons with plenty of comfortable seats available. Took the opportunity of today's lighter pace to compliment the owner, Naz, on the cheerful decor sprinkled throughout the diner. NICEST AND SWEETEST OWNER EVER! She shared about how she and her mom took over the restaurant after the Covid-collapse and her story was quite impressive and inspiring. After struggling with all sorts of external issues in the surrounding area that significantly impacted the cosmetic appearance of the diner, she shared that it was very much a "fixer-upper" when she took it on at the time. She won over support from city leadership, after many attempts at it, to boost efforts to keep the surrounding area clean and trouble-free. She obviously takes great pride in how she has revived this long-standing restaurant! Naz has a high level of passion for providing a top-notch dining experience and that upbeat attitude shows up throughout the place. Attention to the small details is prevalent here. Copious floral arrangements, seasonally decorated for Halloween when I visited in October 2025, and very clean throughout. She even gave me a short tour of her expanded dining room to showcase her many civic recognitions, the table where her local police deputies like to hang out, and the photos of regular patrons that hang upon the walls. Outstanding food and extra friendly service. Naz is a long-term Sacramento resident who beams with joy when talking about building up this diner and making it worthy of being called an iconic neighborhood establishment for people to enjoy. She said that she receives a lot of out-of-town visitors because of many hotels in the surrounding area but I would ABSOLUTELY recommend going out of the way to eat here when I'm in town. I had the veggie omelette, substituted fruit instead of potatoes, and substituted waffle instead of bread choice. Heartily recommend a meal here if you're anywhere near the area! read more

Sammy's Restaurant has been slinging hash to hungry Sacramento diners since 1944. It has padded booths, breakfast bar seating, and an old rooftop sign that 40s-50s diner feel. The menu is full of classics like scrambled eggs, pancakes, BLTs, burgers, and pork chops. They serve breakfast lunch, and diner during the week, but close after lunch (2pm) on the weekends. It has a homey feel and the employees make you feel like a neighbor or friend rather than a customer. I had a cheeseburger and fries for $14.99 and it was very satisfying. The burger was hot, large and tasted great. The fries were crisp and they gave me a big portion. I was impressed and the size and quality of the meal for the price. Do you miss the good O'le days? In a whirlwind of fast food and box-store style eateries finding a neighborhood dinner has become more difficult. With the failing of the economy and recovering from the COVID debacle, finding good honest dinners that make you feel at home are few and far between. I had frequented Sammy's before COVID (2010 to about 2020) however I noted that for a time it had closed. My sister and I along with her business partner at the time would spend hours there working on various projects. Driving through the neighborhood near El Camino and Del Paso I had to make a left and go down Del Paso. As I drove by I expected to see the "Closed" sign up in the window, yet to my surprise and delight, it looked as though it was open again. Going inside using the side street entrance it all looked the same, same O'le reliable Sammy's. It is the same Sammy's however there is a new face to the ownership. My sister and I sat down and reminisced about going here and sitting in the back, coming up with ideas for lesson plans and programs. I feverishly griped the menu looking for my usual 2 egg breakfast and there it was. I ordered that along with 2 pancakes. My sister, being as original as ever ordered the sirloin steak, medium rare and eggs over medium. In about 15 minutes here it comes. I usually do not order potatoes, hash browns or French fry's as I am not a fan of potatoes, but I thought I would give these a try. All I can say is that they are seasoned perfectly, sautéed with peppers and onions, they were perhaps the best potatoes I have ever had. My eggs were over medium and done to perfection, solid whites with a runny yoke. The pancakes were the perfect combination of light and fluffy with a little bit of crisp on the edges. I opted for the bacon and you will not be disappointed. The bacon is thick cut without a lot of fat. Super Good! Also, the coffee was great as well. Usually when you go to a dinner and order a steak, you expect it to be cooked from frozen. Some restaurants will Sous Vide (Water Cooking) the steak to thaw it out and then sear it for a minute on each side to get a crust. Not this one, it was a perfect medium rare with a color gradation of dark to a medium pink in the middle. Sirloin is a lien cut of meat without a lot of fat, hence it is difficult to keep it tender. This one you could cut with a butter knife and it was bursting with flavor. In conclusion, I have succeeded in my quest for a local family dinner that is independently owned and operated. I was skeptical at first because sometimes the changes are for the negative when switching ownership. Not here, as the food is fresh and masterfully prepared by a Chef with over 20 years of cooking experience. Keep these high standards and they will have no problem turning a profit. We will be there again later this week and the weeks following. I am glad they are back in business and the new owner could not be a nicer and more heartfelt individual. I called 2 hours ahead and asked if they would be able to accommodate our group and without any hesitation the owners (mother and daughter) told us it wouldn't be a problem.
