Stopped by on March 7th after walking around downtown Davis with my wife. This was my second time ordering from this place, last time was back in 2019 when my wife and I were 19/18 years old respectively and still dating. Amazing how their prices have only gone up about $2 after almost 7 years, including after being featured on the Food Network in Guy Fieri's show "Best Bite in Town" (which they won with the Thai Sausage)! Anyways, it's a snug little shop where the food is prepped right in front of you. I ordered the BBQ Bacon Dog and my wife ordered the veggie chili. Our food was prepared quickly, and both items were delicious! The hotdog was about a footlong - thin but very tasty! Came with a full strip (or two) of crispy bacon and toasted to perfection. The chili was also very flavorful with a bit of heat to it! Would absolutely recommend this place for a quick bite you can eat while you're walking around downtown. The ratio of cornmeal batter to hot dog was perfect. The hot dog itself was juicy and top quality beef, batter was crisp and golden brown. This reminded me of a state fair corn dog. This calls for an update! We finally made a visit to their physical shop and I gotta say I'm impressed! I ordered their Polish dog with Pickles, Tomatoes and Cheese. It was the best sausage dog I've ever had, so good I wished I ordered another! They get their amazing buns local from Village Bakery! I've probably passed by this place a hundred times in my many visits to downtown Davis, but didn't pay much attention to The Hotdogger since I'm not the biggest hot dog fan. But when we saw they won best bite in Davis, we knew we needed to check it out! It's the tiniest little place, I'm talking like 3 barstools and barely room to order, but they do have some outdoor seating! The guy was working everything - the register, making orders, because there really is only room for one person. He was super friendly despite being holed up in such a tiny and hot little place! We ordered the best bite which was the Thai Chicken which comes with Thai salsa. You might think $13 is expensive but it's so worth it because this thing is unique! You'll never find this easily anywhere else. It tastes exactly like a bowl of tomyum soup and I have no idea how they did it! The salsa on top is so refreshing too. I've lived in Davis for about 25 years. I've walked past The Hotdogger numerous times and walked in once before but wasn't in the mood for a hot dog. After conducting business downtown today, it was time for lunch. Finally trying out The Hotdogger seemed to be a way to relax after our time in the credit union. I had the chicken-apple dog and my husband the all beef hotdog. He wanted the Italian but they were out of it. I was expecting the hotdogs to be served in those disgusting soft rolls you typically get at other hotdog places. I was pleasantly surprised the the roll was a fresh French roll, I'm guessing from a local bakery. My dog had a good bite and was quite filling. After ordering I noticed they had a 5 bean vegetarian chili on the menu. When I return I plan to try that. The rain had stopped for the day so we ate outside. There really isn't much room inside to eat but there were a number of tables and chairs outside. As I said at the beginning, I've been in Davis 25 years. The Hotdogger has been here since the 1980's. Small shack in the heart of Davis. Lots of traffic passing through. Service was great. Greeted me with a smile. The buns are baked fresh from a bakery down the way. The dogs were good. I got the gut bomb, it's a hot link with chili beans, jalapeños, banana peppers, cheese, tomatoes and onions. The hot link had a nice snap to it but unfortunately the dog wasn't spicy. I prefer my dogs grilled, it'll truly brings out the flavor and the spiciness of a hot link. The beans were tasty, not overly salted and didn't over power the dog at all. I absolutely love The Hotdogger in Davis. I also love that I can go to the Midtown farmers market in Sacramento and they have a stand up there most Saturdays. Whether it's the actual restaurant in Davis, or their food stand, the food is great, and the customer service is awesome. My wife and I shared the Chicago and the thai chicken hot dog. The Chicago was pretty traditional, and good! The buns hold everything in and they're soft and easy to eat. Came for the first time on a drizzly week day. The place was empty save for the worker/owner(?) running the very, very tiny joint. There are two bar stools available at a very tiny wooden counter, which we occupied, but generally I would assume most buy and fly with their meals. You choose your type of hot dog from a variety of choices--beef, pork, chicken, vegetarian-- and then your toppings. There are a ton of suggestions for combos on the board to choose from as well. Lots of different toppings and mustards, too. Everything is cooked in a very small oven/warmer/air fryer thing. It all came out hot, though in batches. I loved the fries--they were wedge style and both crispy and fluffy. Hot dogs were good, but nothing exceptional. The buns, though, were freaking delicious!!! Not being a huge hot dog lover, this isn't a place I'd hit often, but for my kid, I would. I wish they would offer some Asian style dogs like Jappadog style. Went to Hotdogger after a stroll in Arboretum. Definitely one of our missed places since we left Davis. Had one Chicago and one Bacon BBQ with wedges on the side. As always we were very happy with fast service and delicious food. I must start my review by mentioning I am a hot dog fan, so I finally decided to visit the Hotdogger after my office moved down the street from them. I always start with my standard measuring stick, the Chicago Dog and added the Chicken Apple Sausage. This is a very small space, essentially take out only except for some tables right outside. The counter person was great, you could tell that they have many regulars by just listening to the conversation while waiting to get served. The Chicago Dog was really good, but the thing that really hooked me was the potato mac salad, a variation on potato salad with macaroni. I really want to go back to try the many variations, brats, Thai dogs, Polish sausage and the like. Give this a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

Ivan and crew are the best. The space is tiny and funky, but the dog (and other sausages) are great. A great selection of mustards and toppings too. It's the only local place to get a Chicago dog, that I know of. Besides the storefront, Ivan also sells at the Davis Farmers Market, where you can get your dog with a wiener and/or bun joke .
