This is hands down the best Jimmy John's location in the entire Portland area. On my most recent visit I was greeted with friendly smiles and waves the moment I approached the door. I thought there would be a line at noon on a Wednesday, but the cashier was too quick! It's like he knew what I wanted! The sandwich crew was firing out sandwiches so freaky fast it felt like they're coming from a T-shirt cannon at a Blazers game. You can tell each sandwich artist really takes pride in their craft. There was such a good vibe in the shop it made me wish I hadn't ordered to go. I even received a hearty fist bump from a delivery driver on my way out. When I'm craving a real New York sub, Jimmy John's is the only place that hits the mark. Their subs are legit. My go-to is the number 10 Italian, of course! This chain, as many of the sandwich shops, allow for customization, which I prefer. It's like we are all super particular on how we want our sandwich made! I'm all about the traditional NY/NJ sub from where I grew up. So I order the Italian sub and do my customizations: take the bread out (gets rid of the soft dough but leaves the outer crisp crust,) extra shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, onions, lots of hot peppers, oil, extra vinegar, salt pepper and oregano. Some people add mayo along with the oil & vinegar but I prefer to pick one dressing and stick with it. At Subway I have seen people put cucumbers, green peppers , black olives, carrots along with the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. That's a salad! I can't go there. They then put ranch, mustard, mayo and oil and vinegar. I have to walk out! People, please pick one condiment and stickwith it! Back to Jimmy John's, they carry what I would call the traditional produce (shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onion with hot peppers being an add on). There is an ample amount of quality meat and cheese, and even though they put the produce on top of the meat so when the sandwich gets folded, the produc tends to fall out when you bite into it, the taste is on point. Everything comes together in a perfect delicious flavor sensation. The bread has the perfect amount of chew inside with crisp crust on the outside. I order a large sandwich and have it for lunch two days in a row. The service is fast, it's what they are known for and they live up to it. Those working the registers and the sandwich makers are all courteous, efficient and get the job done quickly. While they ask if I want soda and chips, there is never pressure to up sell. When I want the basic, a tasty delicious sub made the NY / NJ way, with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, extra oil & vinegar, Jimmy John's is the only place in Portland that delivers to the NY /NJ standard. These Jimmy Johns are run like fine tuned machines. I've been to many JJ's and they all seem to have great customer service, the same menu, high-quality ingredients and the most wonderful tasting fresh baked sub rolls. By the time you pay for your sandwich is ready for the most part. Pretty simple, they offer sandwiches, chips, pickles and cookies. My favorite is the #9 "The Italian Night Club". It is made of Real genoa salami, Italian capicola, smoked ham, and provolone cheese all topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and our homemade Italian vinaigrette. You can add hot peppers also if you want to give it a zing. The chips and cookies here are really good. The Big kosher dill pickles are kind of old fashioned and yummy and they will slice one in quarters for you. We have used their catering lots of times for lunches. It makes me sad to see national chains entering Portland. We have better in almost every category from home-grown businesses. This may be "gourmet" in the middle part of the country. The word "gourmet" itself passed out of the lexicon here quite some time ago. I have fond memories of monster deli sandwiches from tiny mom and pops where the deli was connected to the family living room, or in an industrial area with hungry factory workers, like myself, from a real old school butcher shop, or from many a self respecting NY deli. This is not that. The bread is soft, sweet, Midwest. Uninspired spreads. Very finely shredded lettuce rather than whole. No attempt at ingredient locality, Uninspired menu. We have food carts, sit down and carry out options from local businesses on better bread - stiff Italian-style or French style, with more imaginative ingredients, which, bottom line, taste better. I understand delivery, but curious if at the price point of a sandwich, as opposed to a pizza, if this is a viable, or desirable business model. I have a chance to eat sometimes when I'm in a hurry at a corporate cafeteria supplied by Sysco. It's better at a better price. Subway is better, and that is saying a lot. read more

It is hard to believe this whole concept was thought up by a 19 year old kid! He went to a library and borrowed cookbooks, came up with a recipe for his bread (which is mother-freaking awesome!!) and started a sandwich shop with used equipment and no ice for his sodas because he couldn't afford the ice machine. The odds were against Jimmy John Liautaud from the start but he dug in and now he has 995 stores. I love America and I love a Jimmy Johns sandwich! The Wife and I were coming back from a wonderful Elite Event and since we were hungry and we came from a Yelp thing we were in the mood for something new, something quick, something.... Yelpable. It was hard to pick a sandwich, every one of them sounded like a winner. So we each ordered a sandwich, a pickle and a drink. The rolls are all 8 inches long which in my mind is perfect. Other sandwich places who shall remain tasteless have 6 or 12 inches, and there are just some times when neither will fit the bill. Think an 8 inch won't do it... fine, add extra ingredients, you don't need the extra 4 inches of carbs anyway. The roast beef was fresh, seasoned, tasty and plentiful. The ham was excellent. But the bread, the french bread... a sign on the wall said it all, "French Bread So Good It Has To Be Liberated". The pickle was good as well. I seriously don't think... and I don't type this lightly... I seriously don't think I can enjoy a Subway or a Quiznos sandwich ever again, at least not the same way I did before. So I finally made it here to see what the hype was all about. The menu is pretty simple, sandwiches galore with very few sides like cookies and chips to choose from. After glancing at the menu, I went for the Vito and added hot peppers for an additional 35 cent charge. I added jalapeno kettle chips for $1.25 so final total came to $6.45. My order arrived quickly; they had like 6 people working behind the counter so efficiency is obviously a top priority. The service was friendly. I was pretty hungry and scarfed down the sandwich. The bread wasn't tough but wasn't anything worth praising either. The hot peppers definitely give it some flavor. The kettle chips are similar to those of Time Cascade's so they didn't disappoint. The sandwich overall was just A-OK. I'll"ll probably come back again to check out their deluxe sandwiches for $5.85. I was still kinda hungry after my meal. Jimmy John's finally makes it to Portland. Oh how I've missed them. I went to school in Champaign-Urbana, aka headquarters of Jimmy Johns. I spent many a late night/early morning running to get a sandwich when all else was closed. My two sandwiches today were a bit of nostalgia and a lot of tasty. The bread they use is awesome. I've never had a bad sandwich at any of their locations in the midwest. They seem to do the the Quality Control right. If you're from the Midwest, you're probably already in the car/bike/moped/bus/walking shoes on your way. Upon walking into the store it felt as though my boyfriend and I were bothering the two guys behind the counter. Since it was my boyfriends first and now last experience at a Jimmy Johns he wasn't sure what he wanted and the guy taking our order was rushing him. So he picked a tuna sandwich. I ordered a the Italian Club and asked for extra items on it. So the first problem we had was the type of bread on the tuna sandwich it wasn't the bread asked for. So I walked up to the counter and asked if it would be possible to get a side of lettuce and tomato. I was told no and once the sandwich is made it's the way it is and no changes would happen. At which point I offered to pay and was told no. The two guys behind the counter didn't want to fix their mistake or help in any way. They only wanted us out of the store so they could get back to not doing anything. I have never encountered such rude employees, we feel like they treated us this way because we are gay males. I wouldn't recommend this place if you are unsure what you want to eat or have any questions with that order. Usually, it's better when you and your significant other have varying opinions on trivial things. I certainly wouldn't want to date my carbon copy. We'd both cry while watching episodes of Glee and no one would ever take out the trash. That's both lame and smelly. So when Ter could barely contain his excitement over the new Jimmy John's in the Lloyd Center quadrant, my reaction was, "Because what Portland needs in that area is another sandwich place. Meh." But I gave Jimmy John's a chance anyway. Heck, I rarely meet a sandwich I don't like, and surely the newest sandwich on the block in the old Quiznos location had some decent mojo going for it. Then again, Quiznos closed. Maybe the mojo is not so good. Personally, I rather liked Quiznos. It could never compete with the likes of Meat Cheese Bread or People's Sandwich. But if you were to compare Quiznos to a romantic companion, it'd be a solid "Eh, there are worse ways to spend a night," unlike most Subway lunches, which inspire that whole have-your-friend-call-you-with-some-halfbaked-emergency-to-get-out-of-it gambit. Well, the eight-inch Vito that I ordered from Jimmy John's falls into that middling section. You wouldn't say no to another night out with the Vito, but you're probably not going to be the one to call and get that ball rolling. The bread was fine. The meat was fine. The jalapeno pepper option made it a bit better. Zzzz. Sorry, I nodded off writing my own review. Maybe I need to give one of the giant club choices a try, but it looks like this is another instance where the Ter logic escapes me. Exploring their corporate website, they have been in business, apparently, since the early 80s. How could even a crashing bore, an insufferable ape, a poor benighted savage have this dandy litte franchise under his nose and within reach for any length of time, unawares, one can only wonder.... 5 stars isn't given b/c they're the absolute best sandwiches in town---- that distinction still goes, in my book, straight to the visionary wizards @ Shut up and Eat, with East Side Deli in the 'Top 3 or 4' mix as well. 5 stars is b/c JJs are not only so much better than Subway, they dispatch large group orders so much FASTER, and in some cases will actually deliver 'em to your party! So there! What is it about JJ's that makes such basics like turkey and bacon, Italian, even the plain veggie come alive and make your soul sing for about an hour afterwards? Added to that, Jimmy John's, indirectly at least, helped me realize a very big goal of sorts. A personal milestone, if you will. Segue... I was on the tail end of a particularly frustrating relationship w/an unbelievable ingrate who I am now embarrassed to admit how much time and effort and yes, moolah I invested in, long after it became apparent that this would always be a woefully under-reciprocating relationship. The looks of stunned amazement and bewilderment and, catch this: GRATITUDE on everyone's beleagured countenances made the little investment more than worth every penny. Let's review: Jimmy John's for everyone lit up these people's faces and their souls, it built esprit d'cor, it was humbly received and devoured in earnest by one and all. Nobody tried to pick a dumb fight with me, no bad attitudes, no spoiled whining. Everyone was simply too busy gettin' DOWN on that Jimmy John's for all of that drama. I have since duplicated this experiment, as it were, with eateries other than JJ's, but JJ's was one of the first, and the palpable excitement evinced was quite a sight for sore eyes. Thanks for everything, Jimmy John's! Not only did you conquer our hunger in the hours of our most desperate need; You helped answer a personal prayer, you restored a little faith in humanity---and you also made me personally feel a little more human, which is way more than any benighted savage could ever think he actually deserved.... *snapping fingers* oh yeah: thanks also for helping free me--albeit inadvertently-- from a really dumb relationship. We order JJ's no less than 3 times a week at my work (in Lloyd Ctr). Its so bad they know its me calling (good? Or so sad its laughable?) Anyway.. I'm gluten-free (not for fun diet reasons, allergies suck) they offer an unwitch! All the yummie insides of their normal clubs but wrapped in a lettus burrito! YUM! This joint is like one of the first Ford Motor company assembly lines altered into a sandwich making assembly line. When you walk in you will have about 8 people looking your way from behind the counter and saying welcome. In a bit of an overly welcoming way if you know what I mean. The bread was thin and had a buttery flavor to it. Weird. I think they need to spend more time crafting a quality sandwich and not worry so incessantly on sandwich making time. I guess I am a fan due to the fact I can not find any JJ's back home in NY..? Therefore this is change-up from the normal other chains like Subway or Quiznos. I order the #6; which is basically cheese, lettuce, cucumbers and mayo. I always ask for sprouts and onions to be added! YUM. They also offer their day old bread loafs for sale (50 cents) and if you go in late (before closing) enough they will even give these loafs for free! I'm from Missouri, where JJ's are abundant, so the addition of a store in Portland was long sought after and I was elated when they finally came to town. There's no bells and whistles to these sandwiches, but they are some of the most solid and fresh sandwiches you can get. Good ingredients and good sized sandwiches. The bread they use is great, they don't stinge out on the ingredients like Subway does and I think the atmosphere is definitely way better than a typical Subway/Quiznos. I think it fits into the Portland atmosphere much better than the other sandwich chains. #4 Turkey Tom is definitely the way to go though if you are really hungry, I recommend the Gargantuan! 2 recommendations but I won't ding them for it. - Cut the damn sandwich! I was a little embarrassed at how excited I was upon discovering this brand new Jimmy John's near the Lloyd Center today.. (I'd thought they were only in the South.) But after my sandwich (and customer service experience) there completely made my day, I decided they're deserving of my unabashed public praises. If you work near the Lloyd Center and have been eating lunch at Subway, Quiznos, or anywhere else, do yourself a HUGE favor and go grab a Jimmy John sub. Their sandwiches (full disclosure: I've only had the vegetarian and the tuna SO FAR) are more flavorful, have more structural integrity (i.e. not squished by a sadistic counter person every damn time), have more exciting veggies standard (sprouts!), and their tomatoes and cucumbers looked an order of magnitude healthier than the ones I've been watching the Subway person flop onto my sandwiches this winter (I know, the cold's been tough on tomato growers this year but still -- they're supposed to be red, not an unripe yellow-orange). Jimmy John's makes the best tuna sub I've had at a franchise restaurant, hands down. I ate Subway for years (6 inch tuna on wheat with all the veggies and extra spicy mustard) and still think it's one of the best fast food options around, but the squishy bread, the sickly veggies, the overly-mayo-ed tuna were really starting to grate on me. Now that there's a Jimmy John's in close proximity, they'll be getting all my tuna sandwich business and I am looking forward to trying their other offerings, as well. I do enjoy a nice Jimmy John's sandwich now and again and this is one of two of my favorite spots to get one. Always friendly, I don't need to say fast, and super tasty. I mix it up between the hunter and the lulu, bag of chips and a water. Change and lunch are handed to me almost at the same time (and sometimes has been). Plus, this place is clean. I'm sad it's taken me this long to give Jimmy John's a try. I thought it was going to be expensive but seriously. It's a little more than subway but the quality doesn't even compare. And they are extremely fast with delivery just like the commercial says but I work just a few blocks away. I love that I can order the sandwich and everything I want on the website and they just show up on their bicycles. Definitely an awesome substitution for the boring old subway. You can taste the difference in quality. 4 stars because A, Im always annoyed that they never bring napkins and the delivery people I would think would be a little friendlier considering they get tips but maybe thats just me. We have given Jimmy John's more tries since I wrote my last review. The staff has been treating us better lately, the sandwiches are better, but it's still a very unpleasant experience if you're going to eat in the restaurant. Same complaint about the music, but the temperature is to suit the employees, not the customers. If the air conditioning wasn't on today, I don't know what the strong breeze of frigid air was from. I'm not avoiding them anymore, but I don't have the only say when it comes to lunchtime choices, and due to the music, others I would go to lunch with are avoiding this location. If I am eating here, my experience is usually a 2 star. If I'm taking it to go, the experience would be 3-4 star. read more

These guys know how to do customer service well! I suspect that most of these folks actually enjoy working there, and they are happy to make your sandwich however you want. The food is basic, but fresh and good, made with care. The bread is baked freshly, and is good basic white bread like you would make it at home. I really like the crusty end pieces! I went over there and tried the door one morning about an hour early, when they were still closed (since I was across the street at Safeway anyway), and to my happy surprise, the guy behind the counter invited me in and very cheerfully asked, "what can I get you today?" I was blown away! I asked him about it, and he said as long as we are here, why not make you a sandwich? My hat is off to Jimmy John and his crew!! Jimmy John's for me falls into that perpetual niche of sandwich joints that is one step above Subway, and two steps below Jersey Mike's. Now if you're not familiar with Jersey Mike's they do have them in Seattle, and maybe one day they'll be Portland. For me they are the standard I judge others upon. The first and foremost thing that JM has going for it is they slice the meat when you place your order. It always tastes better. The bread is baked fresh (which JJ also does), and they take you through the accessorizing of the sandwich (which JJ does not do). Jimmy John's always seems to dump a crapton of mayo on anything I order. Even if I ask for it light, I still end up scraping a bunch of it off. As far as the taste goes the bread is really the best thing they have going. Everything else is non-remarkable to me. Is it better than Subway? For sure. It is however also more expensive. read more

The sandwich wad good, but nothing special. The bread was sorta hard and crusty; not what I expected. Also, my wife and I both got a bit sick after eating here. I would say, spend your money on a local sandwich shop, not some chain. read more

I had some errands to run around NE Broadway, so after hearing from a friend who heard from a friend that this sandwich chain is good, I decided to try it out. Honestly it was mediocre. I tried the Beach Club, which had a little too much lettuce and the bread was OK. The Avocado spread part was pretty good though. Also everything was sliding around like crazy because they only cut one side of the bread. If I come back I'd probably try out Italian Night Club. Honestly I doubt I'll be coming back with so many other tasty places to eat around. Also there were a total of about six people working which seemed really overboard considering it was lunch time and there were basically two tables that were occupied (and no one placing to-go orders). It made me want to get out of there quick because they were all just standing at the counter facing in my general direction making me feel pretty awkward! Also, since I didn't expect it to be wrapped up in a to-go packaging (since I was eating in) I didn't get any napkins while I sat down. Then they didn't hand me any napkins with the sandwich. Then there were no napkins on the table! Then I looked around and nobody eating seemed to have napkins. By the time I realized I had no napkin I could not locate them nor did I want to get up with my avocado and mayo-ed up hands to find them. Man, Jersey Mike's totally beats this place. read more

When you sink your teeth into these buns you will like! The bread I mean..it's really fresh and nicely baked. I got in and out so quick with my to-go order I pulled a hamstring. Seriously, I think I did.. The folks are embracing the culture of friendly service, and that's a pleasant change from the other two players in the sandwich game.
