I have a few qualms with Grand Central bakery. First of all they don't have any way of heating up their pastries. So if you want a warm croissant, don't go here. I think investing in a toaster oven would be great for their business. Maybe even an air fryer, those bad boys are great. Secondly, I ordered four coffee carafes for a business meeting, the coffee itself was fine, but they forgot to give us cream and sugar, and therefore we had to go out of our way to go buy some from the store. Grand Central came highly recommended by a friend who told me their pastry chefs had been trained in France. As I'm always on the hunt for a perfect croissant with my French boyfriend, I had to go. At first bite, I wasn't impressed. It seemed overbaked so the crust was much more substantial and chewier than in any other croissant I've ever had. And, at first glance, the layers didn't look particularly buttery. But you know what? That croissant was damned good and I'd definitely get another one. My latest visit here was very good. In the past, they may run out of clam chowder on Friday. Last Friday they were heating more when I arrived around 11:30am. It was not quite ready but I paid and was told they would bring it out in 8 minutes. 10 minutes later I went in and they said it still wasn't ready so I got a refund as my friends were ready to leave. Before I left, the guy who had been helping me brought out a cup of soup and said it's "on the house". I thanked him profusely and thoroughly enjoyed my cup of soup!!! Folks wake up early and hurry to this GC just to lazily sip their coffee and ever so reluctant to nibble at their pastries as they gloat with their smiles having a seat inside. Parking is a city code nightmare ~ strange triangular shape that can sometimes block in one another vehicles. Best to park off the street. The selection is made in-house daily from scratch with natural goods. Tasty sandwiches are fresh and filling. Staff must enjoy the morning chaos cause the service is friendly and chirpy. Amazing place to go grab coffee on your way to work or even if you're doing laundry next-door. The staff is very friendly, the place is clean, and the vibes are chill. The prices are reasonable, the coffee is delicious, and the food is pretty amazing. Literally the only complaint that I can think of is how dry and hard their biscuits are. It's like they think dental care is free. They're so hard, I half-expected Thor to show up and use one as Mjölnir. Hahaha all Jokes aside, I definitely recommend this place. I really enjoyed the ambience of this location. Very cozy and calmer than a lot of other locations, in my opinion. Lots of local from the neighborhood frequent this spot. Do these people that claim to be expert proficient bakers have ever tried a panettone? Sourdough? Oh my Lord! Sweet delicious bread made with sour dough? Yuck! I love their bread, baguette, sandwiches and any breakfast sweets. I got some pastries today for our team meeting, including their famous jammers, seasonal tart and cinnamon buns. Then got myself lunch, lentil soup and scallion and bencher's cheese bread just came out from the oven! Smelled good and tasted good. Coated with crispy cheese outside and moist inside. I also like to use their cookie dough when I have to bake some treats, all you have to do is to cut them out, lay them on the pan and bake them! Like this location, have enough parking (lot and street), can be congested during lunch time, but still you can manage to find a spot. A really hard find - not even in he hip and up places that have WHOLE in their name you find whole wheat as a stable in the aisles (and they even have GCB bread on offer). They also do sandwiches and serious pastries... OMG so good! Grand Central Bakery is a good neighborhood default bakery, where you are guaranteed well made bread, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. Grand Central offers safe and common choices, but you will not find unique items per say. It is not a bakery that I would drool over or designate as a "must try," but have tasty option nonetheless. We tried their biscuit, egg, and sausage breakfast sandwich and croissant egg and bacon breakfast sandwich. Both sandwiches were more filling than we initially thought, I would recommend the biscuit sandwich over the croissant. We also had the house coffee with oat milk and latte with oat milk, both well made drinks! You can order online for pick up or walk up and order. Grand Central is a PHENOMENAL bakery. They have many tasty breads and treats and you can even find many in local grocery stores. We have been to this specific locations many times, including during the pandemic restrictions. We always love their baked items and their sandwiches/lunch menu is usually pretty spot on. I had to give 4 stars instead of the typical 5 because of the problems we experienced on our recent visit. We went here, hoping the cafe would be open for dine-in but expecting that it probably was not, We arrived to find that they are still doing only walk-ups and mobile orders. No problem! We decided to order at the walk-up because I wanted a basic sandwich and this is not available via online ordering. The online system has a big negative as far as I'm concerned. There are a lot of options (additions, removals, substitutions, etc) but you can't change the bread type! The sandwich only comes on that type of bread. For this meal, we ordered a tuna fish on sourdough and a turkey on sourdough with only mayo. When we got the sandwiches, we realized the turkey was on wheat (as is the standard on the menu). My husband went back to the counter and asked for them to remake it. "Hi, we ordered the sandwich on sourdough but we were given wheat," he said. "It only comes on wheat," stated the counter person (not who originally took the order. "Yes, but we asked for sourdough when ordered", the husband explained. "When you order online, it only comes that way, on wheat," she said again. "Let me go check the ticket. Oh, you ordered it here at the counter and on sourdough..." So the husband went back to the car and we waited for my sandwich. Only then did he realize HIS sandwich was also served on wheat (instead of sourdough). At this point, he was getting really frustrated and ddid not want to ask for another remake. An employee brought my sandwich and indeed, it was on sourdough this time, yay! However, something was still lost in the ordering process as the original counterperson somehow heard "onions" in an order that was "turkey with only mayo". We checked the 1st sandwich and there were onions there too. So basically, out of 3 sandwiches, all were wrong. We should have checked the original 2 closely before re-ordering. We just didn't expect there to be so many errors on what should have been simple sandwiches. The sandwiches themselves were pretty tasty. The turkey sandwich, I just took out the onions and called it good. The bread itself was soft and fresh but the turkey was a bit dry and didn't have a ton of flavor. No complaints on the tuna. The cookies are always delicious. We went for chocolate chip and ginger molasses this time and both flavors were great. We also tried a huckleberry jammer, which is their homemade biscuit topped with jam. This thing is so big, I had to stretch my mouth to get a full bite. We loved it! We'll definitely be back, but I recommend checking your order for accuracy. read more

We love coming here as a family and always get the same breakfast sandwich for my daughter who is only 3. I asked for the sandwich to be cut in half for my daughter and the employee started arguing with me about the egg being an health hazard in the sandwich and advised to make scrambled eggs instead. I just wanted the regular egg on the sandwich. Appalled at the response I thought~ Then why is it on the menu, and why has no other employee ever had asked about that being an issue? Went here to pick up a quick breakfast because it smelt good. I was severely disappointed. I ordered the blue ribbon sandwhich and they forgot my pickle. The food was not great but not terrible. The meat on the sandwhich had a canned tuna texture. The breakfast sandwiches were not any better. You can get better breakfast sandwiches at Mcdonald's to be honest. We've been loving this bakery for decades. Used to hang out there every Saturday morning and often stopped by for midweek snacks. We no longer live in Portland, but whenever we fly into town, we go straight to GCB for their cinnamon rolls. We absolutely LOVE their cinnamon rolls. Also love their jammers. The display counter was full of fresh-baked breads that looked tempting and only sounded better with each description from the the very chipper elf behind the counter. She loves her job and she loves the baked goods at Grand Central Bakery. I think I love them, too. I got a Latte and box full of treats. This review has taken me months to write and I write it with a very bad taste in my mouth......literally. I had been a long time customer of the many Grand Central locations around town and had always enjoyed their baked goods. I started buying lunch from this location a couple of years ago and though the lunches they offer are a bit pricy, I liked them. Up until a few months back that is. I didn't have a ton of lunch time on this particular day so I had a driver drop me off instead of waking the 10 minutes it takes to get there. I was dropped off and walked in behind one other person. The place was pretty empty save for a few propel already eating lunch. The lady ahead of me ordered soup and was done pretty quickly so I ordered within 2 minutes of walking in the door. I ordered a beef torta sandwich and an iced tea. Easy, done and off I go to wait my delicious lunch so I can walk back to work. 22 minutes later, I have sandwich in hand and I am off, a bit miffed that it took so long to make a sandwich but hey, time was short now and I need to get moving. I started eating as I walked back to work so I wouldn't go over my lunch time and took my first bite of the sandwich. This was the must chewy thing I think I had ever had in my mouth and thought I must have gotten some gristle. I spit it out in the bushes and kept walking. I take my second bite and cannot bite through 100%. I tear away the bite from the sandwich and again it is super chewy. That's when I look down at my sandwich and I'm like WTF is that....(see photo).......??? I could barely keep from throwing up as I stare at this thing sticking out of my sandwich. My stomach is turning over on itself - repeatedly rolling over. I have already spat out the bite tougher that shoe leather bite in my mouth and I take a closer look. What was hanging out of my sandwich was an arterial vein, a big one. You could use it for s blowgun it is so big. I open the sandwich and my entire sandwich is the same, arterial veins and done weird fatty sack substance. I heaved a bit, dry heaved it it was close to being a complete and total Barfo-Rama. I took the photo and hoofed it back to work. I called Grand Central and got the manager, told her what I found and sent her the photo in an email. Her response was that that kitchen manager was HORRIFIED at that and they were immediately pulling that meat to investigate and talk to the supplier. I was offered 2 vouchers for free sandwiches and told that the 22 minute wait for my sandwich was due to phone orders and basically those take precedence. I got no real apology and frankly a free sandwich was a kick in the gut. I talked to her about how she handheld the situation and she asked how I would rather have seen it handled. Personally a heartfelt apology goes a long way, but show some sympathy and care. Your kitchen manager was horrified, imagine how I felt having this in my mouth and having swallowed some of it. She didn't care, it is what it is. I would have invited the customer back in to apologize in person and assure them this wouldn't repeat itself. Make the customer feel better about it and then make them lunch. Unfortunately or fortunately - depending on your point of view - I struggle eating meat now, especially beef. Jammers,cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, croissant, cookie....still has that special homey touch that I love so much. I came for lunch after my friend really enjoyed coming here. It was delicious! I've never had such fresh and beautiful salad greens. They were perfectly crisp and practically a work of art. I got the pesto chicken salad, and the flavorings were perfect. The potatoes were so creamy that I almost thought they were chunks of avocado. The accompanying bread roll was chewy and delightful.
