The customer service was really good for my first time at a dave's hot chicken. The area around was really clean and safe.

So I tend to avoid super hyped places because the quality usually ends up lacking as the popularity grows...but I do love a good chicken sandwich, and we've been curious for a few years; so come Thursday night after a long shift, I decided to order takeout. With delivery and tip, our total was about $79...which seems steep, but realistically their "sliders" are about the size of a standard Popeyes chicken sandwich with a HUGE piece of chicken. We got 4 sandwiches, fries, mac and cheese and the five piece mozzarella "slabs" (they're not sticks lol), plus I ordered a large ranch and Dave's sauce (like a better version of Chic-Fil-A sauce) and a small hot honey and Reaper ranch...so price pretty standard for the amount of food. The food traveled well and these were literally the best chicken sandwiches we've had. Chicken was juicy and crispy and a dry season that was insanely good. Slaw was crunchy and pickles were tangy. I added hot honey and Dave's sauce to mine and they were amazing. Fries are standard crinkle cut, but well seasoned and crispy. Mac and cheese was good, pretty much the exact kind you'd want as a kid...gooey and Kraft like flavored but with shells and a little wetter. Mozzarella "sticks" were good, I got them in Mild and if anything they were seasoned with the same seasoning they use for the chicken and very good, but surprisingly a bit too salty for me...I'd probably stick to the sandwiches and the fries to be honest. OKAY, but for the HEAT LEVELS: I debated for a while on which to order because I'd say we have a decent spice tolerance...like habaneros are my favorite, but I find them spicy. Buldak ramen is hot as heck, but manageable. To be safe, I got us each a Mild and Medium the first time and we noticed very little variation between the two, and maaaaybe a small spice kick on the back end with the Medium. That being said, we both agreed we'd like a little extra spice next time and considering the jump between Mild and Medium was so minimal, we figured Hot or Extra Hot would be good for us. WE WERE SO WRONG. We ordered again on Sunday. Two Hot sandwiches and one Extra Hot to share...and I highly recommend ordering either of those if you enjoy pain, anguish, are looking to smell colors and taste sounds; because I'm pretty sure we both almost simply passed away. I used half a large container of Dave's sauce on my Hot sandwich as well as an ungodly amount of honey...and by the time the tears in my eyes cleared I realized my fiance was just walking laps through the house in between bites. The flavor is still there, but at what cost? About 20 minutes after eating we both resigned to carrying the fireball in our stomachs to lie down and wait to succumb to our choices, only to awake 4 hours later with hiccups and burps that would make a fire breathing dragon envious. Just be warned if you like spice, you won't find it in the Medium except for at a totally normal amount, if you love spice...you'll find it and then hate that you did at the Hot or above amount. Suffice to say, we'll be returning often...or ordering (whatever)...but we're sticking to Medium even if that makes us wimpy. And if you know someone who chooses Extra Hot or Reaper for enjoyment, you should not only fear them, but get a restraining order...because something ain't right if you can enjoy that. And if you're chaotic like us and STILL want to try a higher spice amount, do yourself a favor and just order a single tender first to try the different levels so you can enjoy your meal fully without being surprised at how one level can increase the spice by 1% and then the next somehow jumps it up 50%. I wish there was a way to get a Medium-Hot one, but I'd still rather take the less spicy, more flavor. Anyways, perfectly cooked chicken, fast service and I'd highly recommend! read more

Stopped by Dave's Hot Chicken after hearing so much hype around it and finally decided to give it a try. Overall, I thought it was decent, but personally it didn't really stand out from some of the other hot chicken spots around. The chicken was crispy and juicy, fries were solid, and the heat level had a nice kick without overpowering everything. Good food overall, just not something that personally blew me away. What really stood out though was the customer service. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The restaurant was clean, the food came out quick, and the atmosphere had a fun energy to it. One thing my wife and daughter really enjoyed was the cheese sticks. That cheese pull was actually super satisfying and probably one of the highlights of the meal for us Definitely one of those moments you almost have to record before taking a bite. Would I come back? Probably if I was nearby and craving hot chicken, but for me it was more of a solid casual spot than a must-have destination. Still worth trying at least once if you haven't been before. read more

Forgot to leave a review in the moment, but this was a great post-concert spot. We rolled in at about midnight after seeing a concert nearby. Even though it was super late, they were super busy, but we still got our food out pretty fast. I will say, I'm not a personal fan of the loud and crazy decor, but they know their audience. I also ordered the loaded fries. They were a bit salty. I gave that feedback to the delivery service provider and Dave's responded quickly with a "come back and try us on us". I thought that was a great gesture and while I haven't taken advantage of it, customer service is huge to me, and I appreciate Dave's taking my feedback seriously and inviting me back. read more

Surprisingly solid chicken: tender, juicy, flavorful, and depending on your tolerance and preference, spiced well enough to be serviceable. Personally, having ordered the second hottest level ("Extra Hot") with my sliders (I'm not a big fan of the Carolina Reaper's flavor, even though I can take the heat), and it barely registered on my Scoville radar; my wife had a similar reaction to the Medium which, knowing how spice-adverse she USED to be, brought a tear to me eye! She handled a bite of the Extra Hot like a champ, too! Service was friendly, and the drive thru was quick. My only complaint would be the price, which seems to me to be a bit on the high end for fast food, but considering how good the chicken was (better than Chic-Fil-A and Raising Cane's, IMO), I'm prepared to cut them a little slack. read more

First off, I like this place. Its quality is top tier and is almost sit down restaurant that just happens to have a drive thru. Chicken is hot, flavorful, never dry and is fried fresh, I assume as I've never felt like it's been sitting around. So that alone is worth giving this place a try. Inside and out is super clean, brand new and bags, sauces and all the fixings are very well presented. The fries are just fries and to each their own, but they do have a "loaded" version that I think takes them up a notch from just, again, fries. Second, and where I'm a bit on the fence is the price. And yes, inflation, rising wages (a great thing!) and just things are going up and up, is totally understandable. We should pay for quality, but this place can be a bit cost-prohibitive or just a once and awhile treat as a meal is pushing $17.89 at my local, and with tip that rounds the $20+ mark for one meal (#2). Now that I've said that Popeyes (lower quality) is about the same, so they are competitive. I would say, it would be nice if a drink was included, as I don't think they are. Correct me if I'm off here. All in all, this place is great, and I do like how they ask for a name and introduce themselves, nice customer acknowledgement. read more

I had heard so much about Dave's Hot Chicken and I love chicken and spice and all things related to it. So when I finally went I was mildly disappointed unfortunately. I will say I felt the chicken was just okay. I got medium spice level and I felt like it was very heavily reliant on paprika which doesn't have much heat to it at all, It still had some heat but not what I expected from somewhere with Hot Chicken in the name. Everything was also salty, which isn't always a bad thing but this was borderline too much. The milkshake was delicious. Highly recommend a milkshake to help cut the salt. If I had only had a soda, I probably would have chugged it and been super thirsty by the end. I did drive-thru, which was really easy to navigate and communicate with the staff. Staff was super friendly even though I interacted with them very little, and the restaurant and parking lot and surrounding space seemed clean and very well taken care of from what I saw. First visit to this location. Its got a cool, urban, graffiti decor. The dining area at this location is pretty small, and so is the parking lot. Although inside at lunch was quite empty, the drive-thru and take-out orders seemed steady, making for a bit of a wait for our food. The guy working was super friendly and did a great job of explaining the spice levels (actually a healthy does of caution for my double reaper order). He talked me in to splitting it with a milder option, and I can't say he was wrong. For ONCE a place brings some heat! Went "hot" for my sannich and reaper for my tender, and will for sure go that route again. Nice to have a little balance. The quality of the chicken was some of the best I've had in a long time, too. Wow!! Chicken here is amazing and customer service is even better! The chicken in the sliders was tender and juicy. I loved the dry rub and the fries as well. The fries were nice and crunchy but also soft! When we came in the place was pretty busy but there's plenty of seating. My partner ordered for me and didn't realize there were pickles in the sandwich which I do not like. The server offered to replace my bun which was so kind of him. I wanted to update my review after eating Dave's for a second time. The first time we had Dave's hot chicken, it was very average and over priced. On a recent exhausting day, my husband suggested we try it again as they are just up the street from us. This time, the food was excellent, some of the best chicken tenders I've had, very moist, perfect meat and a crispy exterior. I'm a spice wimp, but was still okay with the medium level. The fries were very crispy and tasty as well. I love the pickles, don't understand the need for the white bread, but it was okay. The pricing seems to have gone down. However, it's very high for the cauliflower items, sorry vegetarians! I'm hoping our experience doesn't mean they are inconsistent, but rather that they have gotten it together. Was out with a friend and discussing food spots around town that have opened since I last visited, Dave's came up and the sides were highly recommended. Thought I would give it a taste test and tried the Mac&cheese and the Kale Salad. Not a kale fan really but this side was pretty good! The M&C was also good, very rich and creamy. Being third in line I thought the line would move faster. I get it chicken takes a little longer. How about we move the tables away from the door so we don't get pushed out of the way. Since being third in line puts you in front of the door. Maybe if we had our feelings discussion. After the order was taken or move the empty table away from the door. I've gone to multiple Dave's Hot Chicken and I've loved it every time. I like to go with their #2 which contains 2 sliders and fries. The chicken is always super tender and the bread is nice and soft. The slaw and pickles add a lot to the sandwich and gives it some extra crunch and sourness. The fries are covered in a really nice seasoning that make them taste amazing and the Dave's sauce is the real deal. I like to add extra to my sandwich it's just too good. The service was also really nice, they were extremely polite and served with a smile. When it comes to hot chicken Dave's is always a safe bet and I'll always enjoy it. Today, not so much. ordered No. 1 and when at window the very first thing they did was to shove their pad into my face asking how much of a tip I will leave starting at 15%. Had not even received my food yet! Anyway, when I check out the food is not hot. A piece of bread is in the takeout box and the chicken is placed on top and the bread will soak up the chicken juices. well my bread stayed dry as the chicken had been sitting around for awhile and the chicken is very dry, as are the French fries. Much of the chicken around the edge is inedible as too dried out. I'm wondering if the fact that I did not tip is what caused the lousy old food. The No. 1 selection is 2 chicken strips & french fries for $12.99. For the quantity of food I think just paying the $12.99 is sufficient and expecting a tip of 15% or more is totally ridiculous. Oh man, Dave's Portland, what happened to your sliders? I lived next to the original East Hollywood location and went there religiously. The difference between this and that location is simply the buns. In East Hollywood, the bun on the slider was decadent, fluffy, firm, warm, and every hyperbole you could think of an artisanal bun like you got it from a local baker. The one here? Felt like it was shipped from Safeway at the lowest bid. It was flat, soggy, and overall depressing. Just check out my screenshot of the bun (mind you it was like there the second we got it, so we ended up just eating the chicken).
