This was perfectly acceptable BBQ. If you want non-threatening, minimum flavor, no frills BBQ, this is the place. The iced tea was regular and a little dark. You have the option of adding simple syrup, but even that wasn't too sweet. The BBQ sauces were very basic. There was very little vinegar bite to the vinegar sauces. The hot and spicy was just sweet. The sweet and bold had very little sweetness, but I could tell they added spices to it. All in all, they were very middle of the road not unpleasant sauces that added flavor to the meat, but wouldn't offend, or even stand out to anyone. We had the leg and thigh chicken and the brisket as meat. The chicken had tons of meat, frankly too much. The skin was really fatty. I usually like eating the skin, but this was so soft and rubbery, I just couldn't do it. The chicken itself had very little flavor. It was cooked and it wasn't dry or taste bad. It just didn't have flavor. It could have been microwaved and tasted similar. (I know it wasn't because of the texture). I would have been happier with a smaller portion if it had more flavor. The brisket was a huge portion. You could see the spices that jacketed the meat as it cooked and it looked mostly great. It was grey, so I'm thinking it had been cooked the day before (we were there on a Sunday morning of Labor Day weekend). The meat was a little dry, but not bad. There was a bit of meatiness, a bit of spice, and a bit of smokiness. On the whole it was good and inoffensive. There was no bold spice or smoky beef flavor. It was just mild spice and not tough beef with a hint of smoke. The potato salad was soupy, but plain. Mayo and mustard mixed with very little standing out from either. The collard greens were nice with a bit of sweetness and zero acid, zero pork, zero smoke. The cole slaw DID have a sweet acidity and was probably the boldest flavor of anything we had. The Mac and cheese was creamy and tender without being rubbery. TL; DR; this was very safe BBQ. Everything was not bad and wouldn't stand out or be offensive to anyone. The portions were large and the staff was great (if super quiet. We had to ask the girl at the counter to repeat everything she said). I would recommend it if you are in the area, as there aren't many choices for BBQ, but I wouldn't go out of your way for it. read more

Jimmy's is real deal BBQ! I also consider myself somewhat of a BBQ snob. I enjoy cooking barbeque often (I own three grills) and can appreciate the time and effort that goes into doing it right. Jimmy's does it right. As far as what I would recommend, the ribs are very good, as goes for the chicken. I like the brisket, but don't consider it on par with the above mentioned. Was looking for a great BBQ place and I finally found it. Jim is a very nice guy and the food reflects his passion for BBQ. The brisket was extremely tasty and had a fantastic bark. My mom and I had gotten some wooden nickels at the roller derby for free sandwiches. So, I took mom out to enjoy some lunch. When we got there, they gave us hell for using one of the nickels, so I kept one in my pocket and let mom get her free food. We had the pulled pork sandwich, the brisket sandwich, and a side of smoked bacon. It was so delicious and very filling. We couldn't finish what we had ordered. As other reviewers have pointed out, this place isn't going to win any stars for the decor or location - if you aren't looking for this place, you are going to either miss it or dismiss it. But don't. A bunch of us ordered a Friday afternoon lunch and sat in our little cubes and DEVOURED our lunch. A bit embarrassed by the Neanderthal gnawing of the ribs, but they were so meaty, with a beautiful dry rub that held the right amount of peppery goodness, with a sweet BBQ sauce on the side. The appetizer of sausage and cheese was big enough to be a meal itself, the BBQ leg looked like something picked up a Renaissance fair, but actually moist, coming right off the bone. My family and I went there on Saturday night. Not many people there but we were very happy to not have to wait in a line. We ordered the family dinner #5( I think). The girl at the counter was really helpful in helping us pick. We also ordered some smoked chicken wings and smoked bacon. Dinner came with a pick of 4 sides. We got the Mac and Cheese, smoked beans, cole slaw and collard greens. The pulled chicken and ribs were excellent. The brisket was really good, a little dry though. As a visitor to the Pennsylvania area I was skeptic but Jimmy delivers some of the best barbeque I have ever had. His smoked salmon melts in your mouth. His briskets smoke is unbelievable. The brisket is some of the best I have ever had. I'm floored by the quality of his meat and the time and effort he puts into his craft is shown in his meat. His pulled pork isn't covered in sauce like others do to disguise a lack of flavor. The sides are phenomenal too. The cornbread is moist and delicious. We had the sweet potatoes, collard greens, Mac and cheese, and dirty corn salad. I am a big dirty corn salad fan and Jimmys is great, a combination of the sweet corn, celery and onion that is sublime. The BBQ sauces were good. I am a fan of the vinegar sauce. I purposely tasted authentic Memphis, Carolinas, and Kansas styles of BBQ. I cannot more highly recommend Jimmy;s for the brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken and those damn great ribs. Man oh man- those ribs are meaty and pull off the bone perfectly. I think I love his rub because it is just about perfect. It is not overwhelming- so that if I can't decide which of the 3 sauces I want- or all of them- well the sauces compliment the meat just right. Hey,I love the sides. The portions are rather large, so we just share among the group. They also have family packs of foods and the prices are very good. The site has long tables, and a hand washing facility in the dining room. You can bring your beverage from home- and be sure to wear comfortable clothes, because y'all can put on the feed! I've got to say do not judge A book by its cover. Driving past this very unassuming plaza on the Main Line (Lancaster Ave/Rt. 30) you might miss Jimmy's BBQ every time. That would be a huge mistake! This is some of the best BBQ I've had this side of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon Line. The pork and brisket are extremely moist and tender, the ribs are the right combination of tender to the bite, but don't fall off of the bone into shreds with a smoke ring and char to die for. The sauce (served on the side because you don't really need it)(the real sign of good BBQ) has the perfect mix of sweet and tang. The sides are all quite good as well. First thing I noticed is that besides the 2 females behind the counter there were only men here, not a bad thing just an observation. We had jimmy cater our wedding in May, and it was amazing. We had so many compliments on the food, and they did an excellent job accommodating our large guest list in a tiny venue due to rain. My wife and I, And some of our guests, have taken the long trip up from south Jersey to have another bit in his restaurant since the wedding! We chose them not only because the sides were awesome, but the meat was real, fresh and not smothered in BBQ, unless you made it that way with his own sauces. They have the best barbecue chicken I've ever eaten. It's really moist and tender and flavorful. Their bacon ends are also really good. They have three sauces, a vinegar-based and a hot sauce and a sweet sauce, all really good. As for their service, I picked up in order to go which I realized was incomplete when I got home. I had brisket, pulled pork, rib, hot sausage, smoked bacon, sweet potato, collard greens As barbecue should be tasted straight up no sauces First up the brisket nice flavors, tender and moist surprisingly, Second pulled pork also nice flavors, tender and moist Third the rib nice flavors, tender and moist surprisingly with a dry rub that is now apparent in everything Forth the hot sausage had a nice flavor and just enough heat if you didn't eat the outside that burnt to a cinder ( too bad) Last of the meats the smoked bacon burnt beyond recognition too bad again couldn't tell it was bacon! The sweet potatoes were good not overly sweet. The collard greens are not traditional and have heat (spicy) and seems like sugar was added haven't figured out if I like it but definitely don't hate it. The three sauces are definitely all the same spice base with some variances but all in all don't take away from the meats because they have the same spices I would have given better rating had the two items were eatable. The bread that is served with it needs to be better quality and not stale! I wanted to like Jimmy's. I'm a recently relocated Southerner fairly skilled in the art of BBQ. So I wanted to have a local BBQ joint to fill in when I wasn't smoking meat myself. Unfortunately, Jimmy's is not it. The most disappointing thing was that it misses the mark on even the basics of BBQ. I'll start at the sides and move to the meat. I had the pulled pork platter with coleslaw and collard greens. Cole slaw: the reason coleslaw complements BBQ so well is that it provides an acidic balance to cut through the fattiness of the meat. There are a million coleslaw recipes, but coleslaw recipes meant to go with BBQ are always relatively dry and vinegary . Jimmy's is sweet, creamy, and very liquidy. In Georgia, coleslaw is usually eaten on top of pulled pork - Jimmy's slaw was absolutely terrible in this application. Elsewhere in the South we tend to eat slaw on the side, but even here this slaw was simply a bad compliment to the meat. Collard greens: cooked correctly, but bland, bland, bland. Appears not to have been cooked with bacon, fatback. ham hock or any other pork product. No evidence of fatty shine in the cooking liquid. Also under/no seasoning. Bread: a pulled pork platter comes with a thick cut slice of white bread - frequently two pieces are provided. Jimmy's provides a single, thin slice of Italian bread straight from the bag. Iced tea: to be fair, I haven't found a good glass of tea anywhere up here. Jimmy's was no better or worse than others. I had just hoped that maybe a BBQ place would be better at making iced tea. Sauces: TOO SWEET. Even the vinegar sauce was sweet. Moreover they tasted like they were sweetened with white sugar. Real BBQ uses white sugar sparingly. Most sweetening comes from brown sugar (rubs) and molasses (sauces). Pulled pork: Now we get to the heart of it. When I walked in the door and smelled that smoke I felt like I was home again. But somehow that smoke didn't make it into the meat. Others here have talked about the meat being dry, I had the opposite problem. I would not be surprised if the meat had been kept warm in a steam environment. That's what it tasted like. Also, the [too thin] layer of "bark" was moist, tender and flavorless. Moist, tender bark is not a good thing. Bark is supposed to be textured and drier. The smoke and the heat should not only penetrate the outer layer of meat - changing it's texture and appearance - but should also interact with the rub to create an intensely flavorful shell. This just wasn't the case at Jimmy's. I hate to be so critical since I believe Jimmy's is trying to turn out real Q. Unfortunately, its not close. The final nail in the coffin is pricing. A pulled pork platter costs 7.99 at most - maybe 8.99 because everything up here is more expensive. 12.99?!? Uh, no. read more

I am horrified by my experience with Jimmy's. The girl that both took my call and handled my payment for a pick up order was awful. Very flat affect, messed up my order twice (once on phone and again in person) and told me she wasn't "allowed" to put the sauce on my ribs because the owner rations the sauce portions. What!?!? My partner, daughter and I got ribs, pulled pork, sweet potatoes, Mac and cheese and collareds. The pork was mediocre but not terrible. The "creamy" mac and cheese was okay. The ribs were extremely dry and tough, sauce was watery and tasteless (unless you prefer straight sugar), sweet potatoes tasted like they threw a whole stick of butter on them and the collareds were embarrassingly mushy and over-peppered with no hint of hamhock flavoring. I had a takeout order, but a guy that was also picking up asked if he could eat there and the girl said, "No, we are closing soon." They supposedly don't close until 8p and that was at 7:30!! I'm used to Texas BBQ and this was my first experience with Memphis style. I have to say I really like the taste. It's a different style but that's ok. Because the prices are a little high, I decided to go with the brisket sandwich... mmmmmmm. My husband was impressed with his pulled pork sandwich. The next time around I had the full brisket dinner (huge side portions!) and was good too. I recommend the smoked beans. I have the bacon, chicken, sweet potatoes and corn bread to try next time. The owner, Jimmy, is very nice and has stopped by our table each time to make sure everything is ok. I can't say that happens consistently ANYWHERE. The atmosphere is simple but clean and well kept up. My only real negative here is handicapped parking. There's only one space which looks shared with the bank. This isn't Jimmy's fault, the Malvern/Frazier area didn't think disabled people go out to eat. read more

I ordered the bacon, per the reviews, a side of Mac and a brownie that boasted it was home-made. The bacon was salty, but that said, duh, it's bacon. Don't know if it was just overseasoned. The smokey taste was ridiculously amazing, though and kept me diving in for more. I actually ended up dumping the bacon and grease into the mac to make up for the lackluster flavor there, though points for creaminess and texture. The downside was I tried the brownie on site and told the young lady it was hard and tasted old and her reply was, "really?". Yes, really, why else would I say it? Dumped it on my way back to the office. Upside is, the smells were quite inviting and I will try to come back and go for pulled pork or ribs to see if they delight. Beef brisket platter is the only meal I get here. The slowly cooked beef attacks the senses! Lightly spiced, visually appealing, and it smells delicious. There are bottles of vinegar and hot sauce on the table if you want to add additional spice. The thinly sliced beef is served up with a single slice of white bread.
