After all these years Texas BBQ is still fantastic. The most consistent of any local BBQ purveyor I've ever visited - no small achievement considering the complexity of making BBQ. On site at 3am doing their Q low and slow to make sure their customers get their brisket the RIGHT way - tell-tale smoke ring, deep smoke flavor, and not hacked and massacred to bits like most others. First you see it .... .... like a signal beckoning you, the smoke rises into the air. On a clear day, you get the message from as far away as a mile. Then you smell it .... .... because you can't help but travel towards that smoke signal. Moving to within a couple hundred yards, the pungent smoke pierces your sinuses. As your pace increases and you move ever nearer, that smoke is augmented by the unmistakable smell of roasting meats and soon enough you can smell the spices; garlic, cumin, GARLIC, pepper. Then you taste it ..... .... the smoke tingles your tastebuds. You step up to the window and order a half pound of smoked pork loin, half pound of brisket, two chicken legs, a pint of beans, and a smoked potato. Now that you've ordered for yourself, let the kind woman in the truck know what everyone else in your party wants; perhaps some smoked sausage, pulled pork, chopped beef, a rack of ribs, and some more potatoes and beans. The meats are cut to order, pulled fresh from the smoker and wrapped up quickly to contain the flavors and juices. A large container of sauce accompanies your order. Upon arriving home, the entire kitchen takes on the eau d' smoked meats. Slice into the tender pork, admiring the pink smoke ring and the dry rub that has hardened into a crunchy shell. A quick dip into the sauce (not too much, since you don't want to overwhelm the meat) and then into your mouth. If you've eaten food from Tex's, you know where the story goes from here. If not, well, you owe it to yourself to give Tex's a call to find out where they'll be stationed this coming weekend and then head on over. The meats from Tex's smoker are just insanely excellent. It was decided during one particularly fanciful food orgy courtesy of Tex, that the word "meatgasm" would be an understatement in describing the experience. Always tender and juicy, the meats are quite lean though delicately laced with fat inside the smoked shell of spices. The only meat from Tex's that I personally have yet to try is the smoked sausage, mostly because I love the pork loin and brisket so much. Tex's sauce is unique as it is predominantly peppery and garlicky (you can see all the minced garlic swimming around in the sauce) rather than tomato-y and sugary like most BBQ sauces. Personal preference, for sure, but I find the it to be utterly addictive. It is, however, entirely unnecessary since the meats have such intense flavor on their own. I'd recommend consuming at least some of the meat in a sauce-less state. The baked beans are indulgent, almost a meal itself, as there are ample chunks of smoked pork and beef in the beans, all mixed together in a legitimately spicy sauce. It is highly advisable to buy or order your food for pickup before 3pm. Around that time, he'll start running out of items and it is a rare occurrence for provisions to remain come 5pm since once Tex runs out of meat, he's done for the day. In my opinion, if you want honest-to-goodness BBQ, Tex's is the number one source in the area. read more

Is give this place 5 stars if only it were open more!! This isn't a restaurant... But a little food truck permanent parked across from Nudys. One day I was lucky enough to find it open. We asked for a large container of his. Most popular it.. Which was the pulled BBQ pork. We got a few sides to go as well. Holy wow it was amazing. So much flavor. So tended. I've always love food trucks but Texas barbecue takes the cake! I love their pulled meats, and their potato salad. It's nice that he changes locations so that it's available in a large part of town. His prices are superlow and the quality is high, you always see people driving up parking next to his food truck to enjoy the delicious barbecue. I live close by one of his hotspots and can walk out my front door and smell the delicious meat on his fire. This is a one-man operation and the guy who owns it is super friendly and knows what he's doing when it comes to smoking meat. Definitely give them a try if you haven't already read more

For around here, OK, but there are other options. I only was there three times, but each time the hickory smoke waaay overpowered the meat, the ribs were tough and the beans were canned. (I'm probably expecting to much from these places). I would give it a 2.5 star, but there is not an option for that so I rate it somewhere between "OK" and "I'll pass". read more

First of all Tex's BBQ is a mobile operation. He carries 4 large converted oil tanks in which he smokes all of his fare every weekend. You can find him in various locations in central to northern Montgomery and Chester counties in PA on any given Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I was out with a work colleague one Friday afternoon when we happened to pass Tex's trailer in Royersford. I told him he was in for a treat for lunch today. He ordered the brisket sandwich. The girl piled a healthy portion of smoked brisket and Tex's special BBQ sauce on a plain white hamburger roll and handed it to my colleague. He was shocked that it came on such a simple plain roll, being used to the roll making the sandwich at so many greater Philadelphia restaurants. But as soon as he took his first bite he realized what it was and said it as good as anyone ever could, "This bun is just a utensil with which to eat the brisket." Tex also sells whole BBQ chickens, racks of ribs, corn, and other fantastic goodies. If you're planning to get a chicken, ribs, or a large quantity of brisket I strongly recommend you get to his trailer early on Friday or Saturday, don't wait until late evening or Sunday or you may find yourself getting none as once he sells out he can't just simply prepare more as it takes many many hours to prepare all of his food. You can also call him and ask him to set aside your order for later pickup. So if you want some amazing authentic Texas BBQ in the greater Philadelphia area, don't mind a little driving to get it, and more than likely end up having to take it elsewhere to eat, this is absolutely the guy you have to visit! read more

We thought it would be fun to track down Tex's BBQ cart and see what they have to offer. We found them just outside Phoenixville. We had one of the meals with a variety of meat. The flavor of the meat is great...but the sauce is more like spicy, watery chili. Maybe I'm just not used to this style of sauce, but I didn't care for it. Without the sauce, the meat is delicious. However, I will not come back because while eating our lunch I was observing how the cooks prepare food in the cart and I'm not sure how sanitary everything is back there. Have smoker, will travel. We caught up with Tex's in a parking lot in Phoenixville, PA. This is traveling barbecue, and you have to check the website to see where he's going to be on any given weekend, but it's worth the chase. I was delighted to find this place on my visit here last year, and there he was again, sending a thick plume of smoke into the chilly Spring air. On the menu are baby back pork ribs, brisket, pork loin, kielbasa, baked potato with choice of barbecue meat topping and smoked chicken, although not all items are available all of the time. This time we tried the baby back pork ribs. I asked for a full rack and he reached into the smoker and grabbed one with a pair of tongs. Beautiful. He cut it into manageable pieces for me, as we're eating this at our table at a stamp show, wrapped it in foil and gave me a pint each of sauce and Texas beans. The ribs are smoked over hickory and really delicious. He leaves the fat on and it flavors the meat and keeps it nice and moist. The rub is pure Texas...black pepper, cumin and garlic powder, and the sauce is a rich tomatoey concoction flecked with crushed red pepper, so on the spicy side. The beans are cowboy style, in a brothy sauce that's flavored with cayenne and garlic powder and with bits of brisket floating in them. Worth the stop. read more

My wife and I just tried the ribs from Texas bbq today and they were awesome. We were at Bartos pools and saw the smoker and said to each other what the heck let's try it. We only had the ribs and are anxiuos to try other items. The ribs had an awesome smokey flavor that was accentuated by the homemade bbq sauce that was included. This is the real thing, and the real thing is hard to find up here. In the north it's hard to find BBQ that's been slowly smoked, with that telltale pink smoke ring. Yankees are too fast-paced to wait for the real thing and usually grill and just slop sauce on it, and call it barbecue. My brisket was smoked, tender and damn fine. read more

I'm a big softie for food trucks. Especially good ones. I go to the truck in Phoenixville where they're outside grilling right there in front of you (its like a big, damn bbq party) so what more can you ask for. Drive by, walk by, stroll by, whatever because you're gonna smell the grill blocks away. Look, I've stated before that after the food, I'm all about the decor but I also have a huge spot in my heart (stomach) for food trucks (I guess my years in Philly trained me well) and I still think that some food trucks stand up to a lot of brick and mortar restaurants. But they have to be rated on a different scale. This bbq truck gets a 5 from me because its fresh everyday and its made to order right in front of your eyes. I hesitate to give it only one star, because the kielbasa was exceptional. But on the other hand, how can you really mess up smoked kielbasa (its wonderfully fatty to start with and it is cooked before he puts it in the smoker already). The real problem was the brisket...out of a whole pound of brisket, maybe, and I mean maybe, only 2 ounces of it was actual meat, and not fat or major gristle. I get BBQ from smokehouses and trucks all the time, and this was by far the most egregious example of "poor meat/fat " ratio. I threw out 90% of it. Maybe it was just an off day. read more
