I was going to my storage locker on Blue Island yesterday about 1:00 and decided to get a polish from Jim's for lunch. I'm guessing it was only about 5 minutes before I started eating. I had a few fries while unwrapping my sandwich which were still hot. I then took a bite of my sandwich and the sausage was barely warm despite the onions and bun still being hot. It looked like it was cooked thoroughly so I wasn't concerned about eating it and have not suffered any ill effects. Just disappointed that it wasn't hot. BTW, I've eaten their polish numerous times right at the counter and they're usually so hot I've had to wait a bit for them to cool off so as not to burn my mouth. read more

Here's another place that makes the case for Yelp to have a zero star rating available! I had heard about this place's polish and pork sandwich in glowing terms, so I went out of my way to give it a try. It was awful. Definitely one of the worst tasting polish sausages I've ever had. I'm not sure what the sport peppers were spiced with, but I found those to be inedible too. The pork sandwich was edible, but it had no seasoning or flavor that would make it remarkable. Meh. So Jim's Original isn't any sort of upgrade in my book. I don't care if Jim's came before Express Grill or not because they were all around long before I got to this neighborhood, but it doesn't matter. This place was recommended as a must try. I will say it's OK to try but not a must I have had better polish kelbasa in NYC. I found it a bit bland not spicy or seasoned to my liking. I found the onions okay but nothing like the musty smelling onions use by Nathans. They were crisp and that's it. No spicy Gulden mustard but yellow salad mustard. Lol it was okay. I did like the bone in pork chop as I did not get with musrard. I loved the spicyness and snap of the peppers. The fries were brand tasting but then I like my fries extra crispy. The Polish is outstanding but my favorite sandwich at this iconic stand is the equally famous Pork Chop sandwich. Order this with everything which includes grilled onions and mustard, peppers on the side. At $5.25, I can't think of a better value. All sandwiches come with consistently great french fries. I'm a regular here, love that you can stop in here anytime of the day and grab a sandwich within minutes. On a Saturday late night (2AM) there was still a pretty long line. I don't believe I saw indoor seating. We just ordered our food and took it home. They do accept credit card and if you have an I card you can get a can of soda for free. We got polish sausages, fish fillets and cheeseburgers. They all came with fries which were all pretty good. The fish fillets were crispy and you can add onions and cheese. I recommend adding onions for sure. The polish sausage was topped with onions as well and was full of flavor. I recommend. The peppers on the side are really spicy but I would recommend trying it once. It really compliments the food in my opinion. Hands down the best polish ever!! I went to Chicago for my grandpa's funeral in May and me and my mom were starving after we arrived. We hadn't been to Chicago in years (we were born there but moved) and so we didn't know any good food spots anymore! My uncle brought us to this place and OMG the food was outstanding! It was fresh, seasoned, and a really good deal for that amount of food you got for the price!! The fries were also piping hot and didn't need any sauces!! So my boss says to me today, "Want to go to lunch?" and I say sure. But little did I know that I was in for a Chicago tradition on this beautiful day in November. My boss said he'd order for the two of us and came back to the counter (yes- there are no seats here- just an aluminum counter running along the outside of the building) with a couple of greasy bags. As I peered into mine- I asked what it was. And he said a "Polish" (like that was going to mean something to me!) Not only was it a "Polish" (sausage)- it was smothered in grilled onions and mustard on a very soft bun. As I bit into it- all I could think was "Where has this been hiding all my life?" OMG! Greasy, crackly, meaty sausage with tons of onions (I can only hope that my meetings for the afternoon have been cancelled!) served with more grease in terms of fries. This place is cheap (about $3.50 for a "Polish and fries") cash only, and just ignore all the no parking signs around. Everybody does. I should be glad Winter is coming as there is no way that I would stand outside on the service drive to the freeway eating a "Polish" in the snow so my waistline will remain intact. But for this one amazing November day, with the sun shining in my face and the sound of tractor trailers whizzing by- I ate a "Polish". Does this place even need my review? Probably not. The Good- There's a reason this place has been in business so many years and the food speaks for itself. Polish is my favorite thing to order here and at less than $4 it comes with fries. They are super quick and efficient and even though they have cheesy pick up lines, I keep coming back. The Bad- The area is a melting pot for everyone. That being said, there tends to be a number of ghetto ass people who yell at the cook because they didn't do something right. Usually this being something they didn't specify anyways. Can't knock the restaurant for that though. The Ugly- It's on a one way street with very limited street parking. This is a pretty good place to get a bite. Food is pretty good and cheap too, not to mention the fact that just about everything comes with free fries! Favorite thing I've gotten here is the Polish, it's juicy and comes loaded with onions that were grilled and caramelized to perfection. Burgers are very good and not too greasy, hotdogs are good as well but even though it's a hotdog stand, not my first choice. As far as lines and speed of service goes, you have to be mindful of when you go. Lunch time is pretty packed most of the time. If you wait about 30 mins or so after the "typical" lunch time, you should be in n out pretty quick . The king of all late night eating joints in the city! This is one of the places in Chicago that should be considered to be a landmark. This place has been around forever. Open 24 hours and you can smell the onions if you are on the 90/94 expressway. You have your choices of hot dogs, polishes, cheeseburgers, pork chop sandwich, chicken sandwich, etc... This place always hits the spot after a night of drinking and partying. This place was always the place to go for cheap eats before all the big corporate brands and new condo high rises hit the area. Prices have gone up a bit. 2 years ago a cheeseburger loaded with onions cost $1.80, now it will run you about $3. In the summertime, you can buy your eats and go to your car and sit there and shoot the breeze with friends or other patrons that are just standing around. For a late night joint, Jim's is awesome. They are open 24/7! It's a fun place to go with friends when you need a late night snack. Parking is a little hard, and a lot of people park illegally, but I personally wouldn't risk it. Just drive a little further down the street and there are usually spots open. Even though the lines are very long, they move very quickly because the workers are so fast and efficient! You order at one window and they assemble the food in front of you, and then you pay at the next window. We really enjoyed the 100% beef polish and the fish sandwich. They both come with grilled onions! The construction of the fish sandwich was kind of sloppy but it's easy to fix yourself. All sandwiches come with fries, which were actually my favorite part of the meal! They are so crispy and delicious. We ate at the standing counter and enjoyed our meal before driving off.
