It has been a while since I've been at this Jim's location, and it didn't take long for me to remember why. The service here is atrocious. Last time I was here, I ordered a simple breakfast plate at the counter. My server, actually the same one I had my last visit, forgot to turn in my order again. Last time I was here, she had to submit it three times, before it made it to the kitchen. Today, it only took her two times. However, still very hard to get a refill on coffee, and once again, shock shock no one checked back to see how everything was with my meal, or if I needed anything else to eat or... There is another Jim's restaurant a few miles further north on 183, and should I desire to go to Jim's again... It will be at the location at 183 and Spicewood Springs Service here is just horrible and management instead of helping Serve customers, is concerned about beating up staff with commentary on what all they are doing wrong. There is definitely a time and place for that, but when you have a restaurant full of people and customers who are waiting a unusually long amount of time to get their food and to get served, Might not be the best time to input it into that type of activity. read more

My husband and I went there for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised. Joshua our server was excellent and his recommendation was spot on. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs and my husband had the pork chop breakfast. It reminded me of an old restaurant from the 50's. We will go back again for sure. read more

This is the quintessential diner that you've been searching for! Jinger helped me at the bar and was so friendly and welcoming. I'm a first timer from New York. She told me everything was made in house and that the eggs are cracked for every order, not some fake eggs. You could taste that they were real. The biscuits were so fluffy and warm, the hash browns were amazing. I plan to be a regular here. Place was packed so expect a wait on weekends or sit at the bar (no wait)! read more

I love this place and the food doesn't disappoint. It must be miserable to work there though because I've had at least 3 servers at different visits complain about how they're glad they will get off work soon. Last week the man serving us mentioned it 3 or 4 times but never brought extra napkins that I asked for 3 times after using the ones we had to wipe up a spill. Jim's chain of restaurants are pretty standard. I got exactly what I expected for as 1am post-bar hop breakfast (except the grits - GAG - I'll get to that in a bit). There were only two of us still standing, so we chose to sit at the bar top. The service was TOP NOTCH; VERY friendly, down-to earth, courteous, and fast. No zombie, "I really hate my job and don't want to be here" type folks at this Jim's locale. One word of caution though - I somehow managed to slam my shin on a something under the counter that left a gnarly bump the next day. Ouch. Jim's 24/7 menu choices did not disappoint. Breakfast anytime, as well as soups, salads, sandies, burgers, country fair (CFS, Liver $ Onions, etc.), and even a seafood section (e.g., grilled tilapia; admittedly kind of scary!). The "Homestyle Breakfast" for me: 2 eggs cooked perfectly OE, bacon extra crisp, hash browns, and WW toast dry. Everything came out correct on the first try. Impressive! "Steak and Egg" breakfast for the hubby: Nicely seared charbroiled 6 oz. sirloin mid-rare with 2 eggs over-hard, toast, and sadly THE most disgusting, runny, flavorless grits I have ever tasted. In all honesty they should have been sent back, but my husband was pleased with all of his other grub. One fluffy, yummy pancake to share - and I don't even really like pancakes. Meh coffee, so the hubster said...and he knows his Joe. Overall: Sure, yay I'm a fan. At least for late night, buzzed munchies goodness, Jim's will do the job and hit the spot. As a bonus, their offerings seem to be a bit less expensive than the other "I" and "D" place chains - PLUS it's Texas owned and operated, so support local (kind of). 4pm on a Sunday afternoon 1 server so the service was horrible. Waited 15 minutes to be asked about drinks. Order took another 30 minutes. Order was wrong, fries and cheese sticks taste like they were fried in dirty grease. I've always enjoyed Jim's but it has really gone downhill. read more

The crew at store #11 in Austin is absolutely great. Keith, Danny, Oscar, Jinger, Scott, Mario, Ray, and the entire crew are so nice and professional and always make us feel at home when we visit. We dine in at this Jim's every Sunday and often grab to-go orders during the work week. The food and service is always great and has always been since 2001! It is obvious the management team at this store truly cares about providing their customers with a pleasant dining experience. The male manager was licking the front doors at 7. I spent good money on food and didn't even get my whole orde. He was not answering the phone so I went in and ordered to go. He was completely unprofessional and rude! Half of what I went into order he said they were out of. I eat at Jim's atleast every week if not more. Listen up! I LOVE JIM's and I go to my local on Research Blvd. at least two times a week. They know me there, they take good care of me, and I leave feeling valued for my hard earned money. That said, tonight was my WORST customer experience at any Jim's EVER. One young man was serving all 7 - 8 tables with NO SUPPORT from the manager. "Oscar" the waiter was trying to keep up with a seemingly positive attitude, but he was spread too thin and it made him ineffective for everyone involved. 1) I waited at the front for over 10 minutes before Oscar offered a table. 2) Waited another 10 minutes. Got up and ASKED for a menu and beverage. 3) Another 10 minutes and no order taken. So the manager comes out of his hole in the back to see 4 customers waiting up front to pay. He takes their money with his usual uninterested stone-faced expression, and as he starts to go back in the back I flag him down and tell him the situation. "The waiter has been in the weeds for 30 minutes and he NEEDS HELP." His response was, "I have things to do back here." He called to Oscar to take my order and disappeared again for another 20 - 30 minutes. 4) I have now been at Jim's for 30 minutes and Oscar finally takes my order. (Good news: Kitchen staff is fast, order is accurate and food quality is good.) 5) Oscar serves the plate at table and leaves. I then realize I have never been given any utensils. Oscar is now at the front desk taking payments, so I wait another 8 minutes for him to finish, and I get the silverware. My menu never left the table. 6) Halfway through eating Oscar brings the check and says, "No rush." Damn right there's NO RUSH! None in the wait service, none by the manager, no apology for any delay or neglect, NONE. 7) Finally, I am at the desk to pay the bill. I eat this exact meal often and I know what to expect; however, my card was charged $2 more than usual. Why?. Oscar charged me $1.99 for the "double rye" I order every time I have a breakfast meal. Up to today, for years, I'm never charged for a second piece of bread. I guess Oscar was following his training? In any case, If Oscar wonders where the other half of his TIP went, I deducted it to pay for that $2. piece of bread. He'll figure it out sooner or later. No rush... read more

Coming to Austin from San Antonio, (YEARS ago) this was a bit of comfort from home when we moved to Austin. The wait staff are always nice, even with short staffing and pandemic craziness. (Be nice to these folks, they work hard!) Breakfast is wonderful, food is always good, home cooking style, and the biscuits are almost always the best around. Only thing keeping my review at a 2 star review instead of a 1 star review was the actual food itself was pretty good. The place is cozy like every other Jims location but this one was a little more worn out than usual and is in some disrepair. Service was absolutely slow and very inattentive for how much was going on. It was 11:15 in the morning, hardly any tables yet it still took them about 5 minutes to great us and seat us at a table. Over 15 minutes for our waitress to acknowledge us and take our order. Our drinks came with in a minute of our food. What should have be a 30 minute experience turned into over an hour waiting. I do not recommend this location unless you plan of spending your entire afternoon waiting. read more

The night started out as all nights do, light drinking of water and heavy smoking. Midnight rolled around and our collective stomachs grumbled. We deigned to refuel at the nearest [insert late night national chain] and found ourselves waiting in the lobby staring at the claw machine, dazed with hunger, for ten minutes. Finally one server flagged us that he would seat us shortly. He never even welcomed us. We waited a few more minutes before we finally had seats and a few more for menus and water. After much deliberation and sorting through their need to stay relevant in current culinary arts trends, we reluctantly chose our dishes and waited for the waiter. 20 minutes and our cups empty, we were still waiting for our orders. Frustrated and hungry we absconded with our dignity. A small drive later we stumbled into Jim's. We marveled in hungry wonder at the pies on display. We must have looked desperate, because we were immediately welcomed, and seated at a booth. The butter was golden, the steak and pork chops were thick and juicy. The biscuits were soft and fragrant. The server was on point and friendly. He had us in stitches and we had to be wheeled out because we were so completely full. They even slid us a slice of pie as an apology for late coming toast. Ok at first look this place looks like a fifties dinner. When we went in it has the feel of of the dinner in pulp fiction both my husband and I thought it lol! The food was really good! I had the breakfast food and was very impressed! The pancakes are soooo big when they brought out all the food I was regretting adding the oatmeal. The oatmeal was worth it though! I am in love with their chili and eggs. I've gotten them for both lunch and dinner and they are always fantastic. I prefer toast to tortillas and they always accommodate. The service is very good with friendly waitresses that make sure you have an enjoyable visit and meal. Their sweet tea was very good at lunch, and they keep your coffee cup full in the morning. So I've driven by this Jim's a ton since my move to Austin and have always thought about stopping in but usually found an excuse not to. Sometimes this place even seemed closed down, but one evening I finally got the itch to check this place out and I'm so glad I did. I realized how I have been missing out. You walk in and it's definitely a different look. Some may be attracted to the blue/green carpet, or the white + orange booths, and some may think it's dated, I think it's cool and casual. It's wide open with large windows, I make my way to the bar stool and put an order in to go. Rikki was my waitress, she was very patient, friendly, and helpful. I was so fickle and didn't know what to get, but she went through the menu with me in detail and answered all of my inquisitive questions. In the end I went w/ safe and saturated choice: Chicken Fried Steak w/ 2 sides. I was all set with that, but Rikki turns on her suggestive selling jets and starts plugging the desserts. I'm not typically a dessert person and usually pass on it, but her explanation of the cheesecake was so decadent I had to give it a shot - especially since it's the special of the day. I got it topped w/ strawberries. CFC & Cheesecake..... I'm on a roll here. Why not throw in 2 sticks of butter to go? Food came out very quickly, I was impressed. The manager here has been working at Jim's for over 20 years, he was extremely friendly and nice. We discussed how Jim's has evolved throughout the years in Austin. He also told me that he'll make anything you want in the kitchen since he's flexible and open w/ the customers, if there's something you're craving and they have it - - why not? Okay, how about some crow gizzards and possum belly? His jaws drop. I was JK, dude. The CFS was pretty darn good, not too greasy. The brown and white gravy rocked. That cheesecake was awesome too - as I loosened the notch on my belt. While driving home form work the other day, I got a hankering for some eggs and just happened to be near Jim's. So as usual I dropped in to get some. I used to go here several times a month years ago because I worked nearby but haven't been in four or five years. I was seated quickly and started reviewing their very large menu. I remembered it well and sit at a table in the rear of the restaurant; I ordered eggs scrambled soft with sausage and French toast. The service today was OK at best and I didn't my tea refilled until I was ready to leave. The restaurant was well kept and clean. Let's talk about the food, the eggs were very soft a little more than even I wanted but were still good, the sausage was a little over cooked. However, the French toast was excellent. I sit around awhile watching the waitress staff clean tables and talk about being mistreated by various boy friends. So to make long story short I paid and left. As I left I was thinking that maybe IHOP or Denny's would have been better choice today. Would I go back? That is a question that remains to be answeed! read more

Jim's is solid and decent - and this applies to every Jim's in the chain. All the Jim's are the diners of movies and Norman Rockwell paintings without artificial 50's kitsch to say "I'm a diner! I'm a diner!". Just good food, lots of food and friendly people. I am always happy when I eat there. * It is also a major alternative to "Keep Austin Weird". There is nothing weird about Jim's Restaurants - and the people who go there go there because they like things that way. "Keep Austin Normal ". You get a lot of oldsters. (The last time I went, I was one of the youngest customers in the place, and I am over 60.) The younger than 60 crowd who comes regularly tends to be straight narrow and conservative. But everyone is friendly. The staff will have the cook make anything that can be made with what they have in the kitchen. The food is always fine. No matter what you think about Trump or Clinton or whether there should be more abortion or less abortion - Jim's is a reminder that sometimes it is all about being nice to people and having good scrambled eggs. I have eaten at Jim's for years. Back when I first arrived in Texas, my husband used to bring me to Jim's on a regular basis. And throughout nursing school, the tortilla soup was my 'after a long day of clinicals' escape as he would take one look at my weary visage and cart me off to Jim's. Their tortilla soup has since become the standard by which I judge all other tortilla soups, and probably my most revered menu item.... until now.... We went in last night for a late supper. I was in my usual fog of ambivalence. We opted for Jim's and made our way to this - our favorite one (probably for sentimental reasons). Rikki has waited on us numerous times, and as always greeted us with a friendly smile. Hubby knew what he wanted but I had no idea what to order. Rikki suggested one of the new specials. The ribs SOUNDED good, but I almost did not order them. The picture on the table tent looked kind of ... sparse. They looked thin and even possibly dry. Rikki assured me they were really good and meaty, so I ordered them, but subbed broccoli for the fries to fool myself into thinking I was being somewhat health conscious. Paired with a wonderfully bottomless cup of freshly brewed decaf and some water, and I was a happy customer. The ribs came out and were better than promised. I barely touched the included 'on the side' of barbecue sauce (I think the brand is "Sweet Baby Ray's" or something like that). Oh, yes, it was a very tasty sauce! But these ribs were so good I wanted to savor their flavor in all its naked glory. They were juicy and tender and wonderful. I was so surprised. What was on my plate was nothing like the picture that advertised it. It was a thousand times better. I will definitely be back for more of these luscious ribs. I only hope that they decide to make them a permanent fixture on the menu instead of a 'here today, gone tomorrow' special! Oh, and they also have WI-FI now!!! read more
