I have always loved Jim's and it really has not changed much over the years. I'm actually surprised it's still open. It's almost like a truck stop diner open late night and that kind of food. Unusual in that you will have a waitress but you will pay at the register on your way out. Bonus points for still having French dressing for the salads. Good burgers. Small chicken fried steak. Dry chop steak. Good breakfast choices. A lot of customers are regulars so there is sometimes shouting at others, so this is not a place to take a date. Also not that kid friendly. This review has been a long time coming. I remember the first time I ever went to Jim's. It was this location and raining like crazy and my friend didn't want to make the trek to Waffle House. We'd just been to an emotionally exhausting concert and wanted comfort food. To be perfectly honest, I think I very much prefer Jim's to the Waffle House, even if the United States Government doesn't gauge emergencies on whether or not Jim's is open. On said trip, I had the two eggs with bacon and toast breakfast. He had the pork chop breakfast. It looked delicious and we both enjoyed our takings. Since then, I've discovered that Jim's has surprisingly great steaks, great burgers, and great breakfast dishes. Also great appetizers. Probably great everything. All cheap. In my experience, the service has always been really pleasant and my tea has always been full. You'd be fine to end any relationship with IHOP and Denny's and go to Jim's. Simple, comforting diner food. My husband loves the place, probably because it reminds him of his childhood in Alabama. He always gets the chicken fried chicken, and it's always delicious (I know this because I always sneak a few bites.) As I said, there is nothing fancy about Jim's, regarding either the food or the atmosphere. There has usually been a wait every time I've come here (which I read to be a good sign), but there are counter spots if you're in a hurry. Service has always been fast, although not entirely friendly- they mean business here, and move people in and out of seats fairly quickly. Try the chicken fried chicken and you won't be disappointed. (Trust this Alabama girl, I know good CFC when I see it.) My pancakes were also very good- fluffy and warm. We met a friend here for Breakfast on a Saturday morning at 9am.The place still had a few tables open by the time we got there. We sat in Gingers sections. A very nice and friendly waitress There was 4 of us at our table and only 1 of us had a issue with our plate and Immediately Ginger took it back to be corrected and brought out a new fresh and hot. Pancakes here are awesome. Especially the Blueberry Pancakes. Don't get me wrong the Buttermilk pancakes are great too. But if you like BIG fresh Blue berries you have to try these!!! Let me first confess that I am a Jim's aficionado having grown up in San Antonio. That said, the service the food and the atmosphere are the one thing that my family can always agree on and we have Sorely missed eating here during the pandemic. My son had one wish for his "last meal "before school started again and it was to eat at Jim's so we ordered over the phone and picked up. It was the most satisfying meal we have had in a long time. I had been meaning to try this place for a while and did so last week. I went for lunch and had the CFS. Jim's serves the classic version that people want. It was Service was great, the dining and rest rooms were clean. My only criticism is about the sides. Potatoes were the instant variety and the squash medley had an odd flavor. The summer squash and zucchini were cooked perfectly but included pieces of tomato one of which had the black stem end. There was also a large piece of onion skin in the mix. My opinion is that they should use just the squash with salt and pepper, a little butter and maybe a pinch of parmesan. Clearly, this place is a popular spot with Austin natives. You really can't go wrong at Jim's. It's diner food in a diner atmosphere, so don't go in expecting much more. I mostly stick to the breakfast menu, but I got the club sandwich this time and it was great. It was Labor Day and nearly every table was full, but the servers were not running around like crazy and appeared to have everything under control. I was impressed. read more

Apparently the tea selection is pretty dismal, though. One of my dining companions asked for Earl Grey tea (not very unusual) and it baffled the server who produced 3 kinds of Lipton like you'd expect along an interstate. Oh well. Ok so I used to come here with a friend about a year ago and it was ok. Diner food, cool waitress in the middle of the night, bomb sweet tea! Well unfortunately my friend passed away and i havent been in in a while, was feeling nostalgic and came in late late night. Apparently people do really make the difference.. Came in and first thing i saw was half the resturant was blocked off my chairs.. apparently servers didnt want to have to walk too far...? Lady waves me to the other guys section. I go to sit at a table. Its dirty, needs wiped down. No biggy its 430 am maybe they they just got hit with a Saturday night drunk rush. I used to work in a resturant i get it. No prob move somewhere else. The third table i got to looked clean. :/ Asked for sweet tea, got unsweetened. Maybe he didnt hear me right, and asked to switch it out for sweet tea. I think he just topped it off... grinned and bared it with table sugar. Soup and sandwich comes out, soup is good, sandwich ok. Couple next to me leaves, guy comes over busses table but does not wipe it down. Guess they dont do that any more... :( Everyone is just kinda hanging out, no one is cleaning anything or doing any side work, manager is wandering around, the waitress is on her phone leaning on the bar. This place is a real joke. First of all when you walk in the place it smells like you just walked into a retirement home. The waiters are about 70 years old and are very slow, forgetful, and can't hear very good (I had to litterally YELL out my order 3 times). Food comes about a good 40 min later I ordered the chicken fried steak. Wasn't even hot it was warm, (they probably left it sit out for 20 min I'm guessing) very bland. Worst chicken fried steak I've ever had in my life (and I've been all over the country). The mac and cheese for the side just tasted so horrible it was unbearable. It your looking for old school American food Jim's is your diner. As a long time customer I will share some of my favorites. Fantastic breakfast tacos tip order with a side of ranchero sauce (It's like salsa served warm). Tortilla soup is fanatic and they have a great chef salad. There pies are awesome so save room. There are not many of these old schools diners left anymore and Jim's is and aways was one of best. It's very casual in atmosphere and menu and you can consistently count on a good meal. read more

I used to go to the Jim's at the Y all the time - the food was fine, the service was great. Last night, went to the Jim's at Burnet and 183 and it was *horrible.* Service was slow. Food took almost a half hour to arrive. When it did, my burger was burned and cold, and the fries tasted stale. There's no reason a diner shouldn't be able to handle a basic burger and fries, and this was literally the worst I've ever had. I will not be back. read more

I went here for lunch this afternoon (this was my first time experience) and Mary, Michelle and Jinger were very friendly and welcoming towards their patrons, today's experience at Jim's Restaurant is some of the friendliest and most welcoming servers I've ever experienced, Mario was my server and he was a really funny guy who seemed to be enjoying his job, I had the chicken fried chicken, mac & cheese and mashed potatoes & gravy, the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes were great and the mac & cheese was good, including a soda I was able to have my meal for under $15 which felt like I took a return trip back to the pre-COVID era of pricing. Slow service and ridiculous prices for basically being a Dennys. I just ordered a pancake combo which I thought to be under $6 but was actually nearly $10. The menu has fine print that I missed. LET'S TALK BREAKFAST!! This is a all American breakfast, lunch, and, supper greasy spoon, with a sampling of limited Tex-Mex. Basically, it is a local Denny's fused with IHOP kinda joint. Jim's is a non consistent doable when you are in a pinch. They are a bit pricey for the food, and, the quality is seriously lacking. Coffee is akin to that at a truck stop greasy smokey diner. The staff are usually friendly, but, I have had some bad experiences. Go in here between 0 hundred and 0600, and, you'll be ok, if you're drunk. I've been in here several times when they are busy (10 customers minimum), and, it is a frustrating disappointment. Many times I have refilled my own damn drinks. There seems to be a weird trend in North Austin with waitstaff not wanting to refill your drinks. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not everywhere, but, it is here. Seriously speaking, these guys are in the back of the line when it comes to breakfast and service. My suggestions? Vazquez (which is next door), or, Dan's (speaking for the immediate area). I went as far as contacting Jim's HQ last year because, they say they are committed and they care. I got no written or electronic response back, but, I do get random stupid emails. Hmmmm! This is the perfect "backup" restaurant. It's nothing spectacular, but the food is good and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I came here with my husband on a Saturday morning after we realized that our favorite brunch spot was packed. At Jim's we were seated right away, and even though there were lots of people, it was fairly quiet because the layout is spacious. It's very kid friendly and their menu has pretty much everything you would expect from a classic dinner for breakfast, lunch and dessert. My husband got a burger and I got eggs Benedict. read more

We got our bill before we got our food. Hmmmm. Maybe I haven't had a good Monte Cristo melt from House of Pies in far too long, that I thought Jim's melt was a little tasty. Maybe being away from the real deal for so long desensitizes your buds' capability to discern fodder. Maybe Jim's Oreo Heaven pie was actually as good as my abused sense of smell/taste perceived it to be. Or maybe, just maybe, I was used to eating oatmeal and canned soup sick at home for eight straight days that I became uncontainable at the prospect of eating outside my own kitchen, with human contact, at a 24-hr diner that is NOT 24 Diner (you know why). Service was shockingly slow with at most four other tables occupied after midnight. I get the feeling staff here are used to individuals joining parties that have already been seated. This is a diner. Late night shenanigans are expected. But when my associate and I joined a table of 5 at their rather large round table, I recall about three times a server delivered to our buddies before I called her closer to order food. Because I like to have food when I go to a restaurant. Otherwise why would I rendezvous with Seated Party Buddies... at a restaurant? Saving factors: - Tasty (I think?) patty melt. I'll know for certain once my immune system is back up and running at full capacity. - Definitely tasty Oreo pie. I've been to this Jim's Restaurant twice in the last 9 years. Jim's is like a Denny's, except with more truckers and a stronger odor of cigarettes and mildew. The last time I visited was with your friendly neighborhood police in the Northwest Hills section on the 9pm - 7 am shift. This review might be tainted as I might have gotten better service while sitting with the men and women in blue. APD also paid for my oatmeal. We strolled into the Jim's with 5 other officers. I'm sorry to say that though the police officers get a 50% off discount on their bill, the food isn't any better. I ordered a bowl of oatmeal, and my officer order a sammich of sorts. My oatmeal tasted like plain oatmeal. Probably the same oatmeal that has been stewing for the last 5 days. Nothing special. Brown sugar and raisins made it tolerable. Service was spiffy. The waitstaff was very accommodating and all smiles. I guess that's the way it is when you're sitting with the law. After we finished our meals, we headed out for some more criminal catching. No, we mosey on down the 183 to Jim's, where the plants are plastic, the music is mushy, and (most of) the guests have grit. Sure, Jim's isn't exactly a local establishment. And maybe the menu doesn't have many healthy options and the waitstaff isn't full of hipster-musician types. Why do these things have to constitute a praise-worthy Austin diner? What matters is that Jim's has tasty burgers and good, cheap coffee. What matters is that there are beautifully displayed cakes and pies greeting you when you walk in. What matters is that your waitstaff is always courteous, never standoffish, and never trying to be cooler than you. The difference comes in two parts -- 1) Jim's is a Texas owned operation which means you get some Tex-Mex options on the menu too. 2) The service is super friendly. The other night, two of my public safety colleagues and I met up here for dinner. The service was first rate. The food was quite consistent. Three stars is right on the money for this place. We went for breakfast the other day and it was pretty decent. There were some hits, and some misses. Jim's has a very 'truck-stop' kind of feel. It falls somewhere between a higher quality Waffle House or Denny's, and maybe a lower quality Perkins. The biscuits and gravy were probably my favorite. The biscuits were large and tasty, and the gravy was good with large chunks of sausage in it. The hash browns were also damn tasty. They tasted like they were cooked in copious amounts of butter and just lightly crisped on a flat grill, it was damn yummy. The pancakes were also a big hit. They were fluffy and tasty. They were also sort of crispy around the edges, which reminds me of the pancakes my dad used to make when I was a little guy. They were the highlight of the meal , no doubt. On the down side, my scrambled eggs SUCKED. Seriously, how do you mess up scrambled eggs? They had ZERO flavor. Also, the bacon is terrible. I love slightly undercooked bacon (if it is too crispy I hate it), but this stuff was like a wet noodle. It was just plain gross. Now that I kinda know what to avoid, I think I will definitely go get breakfast at Jim's again. They certainly won't win any awards, but if you want some good Biscuits and Gravy, and some pretty great Pancakes, head on to Jim's and get your grub on. I've been to a few different Jim's locations, but this one is my favorite. We end up there on a regular basis. I really love the whole Keep Austin Weird vibe around town...I love that you can go into restaurants and your waiter will have holes in his ears big enough to put your finger through and more tattoos than you'll see in a prison. But I also like the flip side of that weirdness...places like this Jim's location. It feels like it was built around 1972 and everything just got stuck. The staff is typically friendly, even if they sometimes seem like they really really want to go have a cigarette. You can eat here for next to nothing, or you can spend more for diner style steak if that's your thing. There are several things that I enjoy at Jim's...the Pioneer Breakfast is delicious and the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast will do in a pinch! I know that it's probably close to blasphemy in this city full of really solid Mexican and TexMex restaurants, but I also dig the Cheese Enchiladas topped with Frontier Chili. It's a simple concoction...shredded cheese rolled in corn tortillas, topped with chili and baked until gooey...but somehow it just comes out wonderfully every time! It's standard with a side of tortillas, but they'll sub biscuits if you ask, and if I'm ordering it around brunch-time, I always do! Their buttery biscuits topped with jelly make a great dessert! For some reason, the ambiance at this Jim's location always reminds me of Wailana Coffee House in Waikiki...and that's not a bad thing! read more

There are a ton of "regulars" who go there...talk about people-watching!! :) From the glamor 90 yr old ladies to the old men in zip up jumpsuits to the teen boys walking in with panda hats...it was fun to sit and watch the folks come and go. I'm sure that's not what you want to hear about though...I had a breakfast sandwich....2 eggs, bacon, on Texas toast with a side of hashbrowns. It was good. I mean...how do you mess something like that up? It had loads of bacon (just what I like) and was quite a big sandwich.
