Gang! This was my first visit to a Jim's Restaurant location and it won't be my last. This family-owned regional chain has the old school diner concept down. You can tell as the decor and layout doesn' seem to have changed in at least 30 years and that is a-ok with me. I love a good diner and this location nailed it. Our server was everything you want in a diner employee. She was efficient, friendly, honest, & hilarious. The food was standard diner comfort food but there was nothing standard about the taste. It was good homecooking-style breakfast. The portions are insane. I ordered from the "senior menu" for the first time in my life---apparently I have been able to do this for the last two year since turning 55. Anyway, the portion was SO BIG for a senior meal! Freshest tasting chicken fried steak Not Battered over load. Divine Gravy!, fresh mashed potatoes and Mac n Cheese with Sweet Tea at Lunch time. Service was greatly appreciated and kind, friendly and worked hard. Almost like sitting at your kitchen table eating lunch with your family and be able to talk to each without loud music playing. The crispy stuff is crispy, the cheesy stuff has plenty of cheese, and the eggs are cooked by someone who cooks like they've been at it since before you were born. Today my husband and I went to Jim's everything was great, until we were checking out. There was an older gentleman that was paying as well. His card was declined and the manager Mariah was extremely rude and very disrespectful towards him! He kept saying he had money on his card,but Mariah said "No your card was declined!" There were 2 law enforcement having lunch and Mariah said rudely to those law enforcement's "Can I get some help here!" They ask what the problem was and she goes on to tell them what happened about this older gentleman's a card. They asked Mariah what was it she wanted them to do? Mariah proceeds to tell the law enforcement " You tell me?" They tell her no you tell us what you want us to do? The law enforcement offered to pay for his tab which was only $25 and Mariah said No! My husband even offered to pay for his meal. And again she said No! Then she tells the law enforcement that she wants the older gentleman banned. Like seriously she had 2 people offer to pay for that older gentleman's meal. I don't understand why she just didn't accept the offer and call it a day?!? I love Jim's, but today Mariah the manager was extremely rude and made a big scene about it which was very unprofessional of her, but also embarrassing to that older gentleman. I did reach out to higher management and left a message and got no response. All I can say is Mariah at the Jim's located off Hwy 71 in Oak Hill is to do better! read more

It's not fancy, the portions are average but the service is always the same polite and friendly servers. I'm a huge fan of the "build your own" kind of breakfast. Jim's has been around a while and the design and style of the place (especially these older ones) are like old diners. The food is always exactly as I ask for it and it's delicious! read more

It's been years since I've visited Jim's so I'm happy to say that the service and food still has solid quality for what it is. We arrived on a Saturday during lunch and they were very busy. Fortunately there was available seating and we were quickly addressed by a server who clearly was working VERY hard. The bacon on my BLT was nice and crisp, yet not overly cooked. The tomato and lettuce were nice and fresh. The onion rings were awesome! I give them a 10 out of 10! The chicken sandwich was grilled nicely with well melted cheese. The amount of freshly cooked fries provided was terrific. Our server, despite clearly serving way too many tables, was on top of things, proving drink refills without us asking. He also came by at the end of the meal and asked if we needed to-go boxes. I appreciated that he noticed our need without me needing to ask. This is not a place for fine dining. I came here for nostalgia when I lived in San Antonio. It looked like the 80s still. The cleanliness was questionable. It made me sick about an hour later and I had fasted so there was no other place I ate. I had an omelette with vegetables. Service was good. read more

I always get the senior breakfast here and it fills me up. It's diner food and it's always tasty. The servers are mostly longtime employees and they really know their stuff! The atmosphere is very cordial and the other customers all say hi to you like old friends. It's definitely a throwback to earlier times. The building (and furnishings) are certainly showing their age but I think that's part of the ambiance. The place is in the shadows of busy Hwy 183 but you feel like you're out in the country. I hate to complain about Jim's. They have some respectable burgers and a better than average chicken fried steak which is harder and harder to find in Austin. The one star is for service. Twice in the last few months I have seated myself per the instructions on the sign where I entered. Twice, I have waited over 10 minutes without being greeted by a server. Neither time was the place very busy. Lots of empty booths. My time is valuable and I can't waste it on places that don't take time to at least greet a customer. read more

Wow for being in Austin for over 25 years I had never been to Jim's I had always heard good/decent things about this place but had just never gone. Well today was the day. I met some friends there and we walked in. Let me set the scene. Parking lot is huge for the space that is servers (+) The staff was so kind and welcoming very different the. Many places I currently go. No attitude at all. The space its self is a very lived in kind of space. One can tell the venue has seen some amazing times. I mean hell they even have ¢25 gum balls. We sat at the counter top dinner space. With in seconds our server / waitress was there to ask about drinks. Not before she greeted us and had a quick convo about our day The food was always amazing. There was no seasoning on the green beans. This place has not been the same since the pandemic. The manager Luis is worthless. My my breakfast was prepared perfectly. However, they used to provide some of the best service in the entire city, but that is long gone. Having breakfast, and only getting one cup of coffee throughout the entire meal is not acceptable. My server was nowhere to be found. If you are looking for a good breakfast that doesn't break the bank, I highly recommend Jim's Restaurant. It's a great alternative to visiting a chain restaurant. I had the Pioneer Breakfast which included biscuits and sausage gravy and my choice of 2 eggs. I've found that restaurants don't always offer poached eggs, but Jim's Restaurants did, and I was thrilled! The food came out quickly and wait staff was very attentive. Note: The restaurant building is pretty vintage and out of date, with chairs that have been well-loved. This isn't a place to get dressed up for, but a very casual, no-makeup joint. I just had the best dining experience since moving to Austin a year ago. To be honest I arrived in a bad mood. My morning was just not going right. For one, I skipped dinner last night and was absolutely "hangry". For breakfast I ordered the 10oz ribeye steak (medium), 3 eggs (over medium), hash browns, 2 biscuits (with gravy) and a bottomless cup of coffee for less than $20!!!! WTF?!?! Everything was cooked perfectly. The steak was at least 50% thicker than anything you would get at Dennys or IHOP. No A-1 needed. I added black pepper to everything and Tabasco to my hash browns but that was all that was needed. Everything was flavorful and fresh. I was truly impressed from the second I stepped into the building and I left satisfied both physically and mentally because the staff was so very friendly, fast and informative. The host was kind and addressed me immediately. The waitress was a true professional who was at least 3 tables deep when I arrived in her section. She didn't need to write a single thing down. My coffee cup was never empty and the kitchen had my food ready fast and it arrived hot. I was never pressured to leave after I was done eating. I got to enjoy my coffee, write this review and really take-in the environment. It was comfortable. Not fast paced and stressful like a Dennys or an IHOP. To my left I was lucky enough to overhear/eavesdrop on some elderly veterans talk about everything from WWII planes to, ammo, to other parts for the world they served in. To my right was another elderly man who came and went with a backpack. He was just enjoying his coffee. He seemed to have a mental disability. I heard him sort of moaning to himself quietly. That being said, my faith in humanity was restored to witness the waitress be so kind and gentle with him. This is the type of place I would be honored to become a regular. If you're hungry at 6am, there's no better place to go then Jim's. Parking is super easy in their giant lot. The food is great and served quickly. But what makes it outstanding is the service! Jinger wasn't just prompt but friendly throughout. Checking on us often and making sure our drinks were topped off. Truly a gem..jims makes you feel like part of the family. Recently ate at Jim's on Research. First time ever at a Jim's. The AC was barely working -- and yet the place was full. If I hadn't been meeting a friend, I would have left. The bacon tasted piggy -- which makes me think it was old. I don't know how a breakfast-serving place would have old bacon. The scrambled eggs and hash browns were fine. But the much-lauded biscuits were quite a let-down: super soft, no crust. I had to eat it with a fork! The service was kind and I feel for anyone working there without AC. It has been a while since I've been at this Jim's location, and it didn't take long for me to remember why. The service here is atrocious. Last time I was here, I ordered a simple breakfast plate at the counter. My server, actually the same one I had my last visit, forgot to turn in my order again. Last time I was here, she had to submit it three times, before it made it to the kitchen. Today, it only took her two times. However, still very hard to get a refill on coffee, and once again, shock shock no one checked back to see how everything was with my meal, or if I needed anything else to eat or... There is another Jim's restaurant a few miles further north on 183, and should I desire to go to Jim's again... It will be at the location at 183 and Spicewood Springs Service here is just horrible and management instead of helping Serve customers, is concerned about beating up staff with commentary on what all they are doing wrong. There is definitely a time and place for that, but when you have a restaurant full of people and customers who are waiting a unusually long amount of time to get their food and to get served, Might not be the best time to input it into that type of activity. read more
