If you are looking for modern decor and farm fresh vegan meals, this is not your place. However, if you are looking for a meal that will make you want to take a nap, this is the best place for it. The service is consistent. Consistent as in, I have seen a server working here that I have recognized for at least 15 years. You are not going to see any supermodels taking your order. You will see some super people though. You might think you drove here in a stainless steel time machine and arrived in 1982. The color scheme is that awesome. That said, you are going to enjoy a great meal for a great price. The same breakfast at a more "acceptable" restaurant would be double the price and not taste as good. Fried eggs taste the same if you pay $20 or $2 for them. Hand breaded chicken fried steak, fresh hash browns, pancakes like your mom flipped them in the kitchen. People bash this place because it looks like a truck stop from the 80's. Well, it does. It also has some of the best comfort food you can get in Austin today. My family and I have been coming here since I was in diapers. They have some of the best food and never disappoint whether you want breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Breakfast tacos = AMAZING (hash brown potatoes yum) chicken fingers, chicken fried steak, tortilla soup, fries, salads, and homemade ranch. Came to the Research Blvd location in Austin for lunch with my boys. It was my favorite place as a teen, and I wanted to share that experience with my children. They didn't disappoint! The food is still pretty darned amazing. Decor hasn't changed a bit in 30 years, yet it still, weirdly, looks contemporary and good. I happen to be a fan of Jim's. The food is always consistent and delicious. I try to try something different every time I go, and the menu is large enough that it's easy to do that. This time, I wasn't super hungry, so I just went with a simple cup of soup and a 1/2 sandwich. Chicken tortilla soup and a BLT. The soup says that it's award winning, and not to be rude, I'm curious about what award. It's good and I've definitely had worse, but I've had better. The BLT was just like you would want to make it yourself. Thick, perfectly prepared bacon. Fresh tomato. Crisp lettuce. The fries aren't the best ever, but they're good and I always enjoy them. The service has always been really pleasant and my glass never gets below half full. The decor is funny, insofar as you feel like you're in your grandmother's den that hasn't been renovated since 1970. This has always been a good time for me. Burgers. Steaks (PREPARED PERFECTLY!). My aunt hadn't seen the available senior menu and asked for only one egg and Sandi happily accommodated and recommended the senior menu equivalent, which was EGGsactly (hehe) what my aunt was looking for. Ambience - imagine an old 80's or 90's diner and that is exactly what you will get. That's not a bad thing thou. It gave me massive nostalgia of my childhood so that was pretty cool. Everything looks and feels completely outdated and they definitely havent remodeled or upgraded in decades. But it works, at least for me. I really enjoyed the retro feeling. Service - came in during the winter sleet storm a few weeks back and was greeted by a friendly young black lady who sat me at my table. It looked like it was just her and another older lady during the mid. I even overheard the lady say that it is going to be a busy mid. Both were super nice, my server was friendly and attentive. Since they got busy I was very easy going and patient since I know how it goes. But overall the service was good. Even the older lady was a throwback of nostalgia of your cliche 90's diner waitress. Menu - it's a home grown and country cooking kind of menu. It has a very fast breakfast menu and then a very large and varied lunch/dinner menu. It has all the classics you would expect from a country diner. Chicken fried steaks, burgers and so on. I made the mistake of ordering without reading it carefully enough to see that you have to choose your sides, which resides on the last page. Oops, sorry for being that person. But the menu is very solid and has everything you could expect from a country diner. Food - being a somewhat country boy I got the amazing classic of chicken fried steak. Two of the best things in life in one. Everyone loves beef and everyone loves fried stuff. Put them together to get this beautiful golden brown deep fried piece of dead cow goodness. Yum. And if you dont like either, or both, can you really call yourself an American.... let alone a Texan. Sorry not sorry. Anyways I got the sides for fried okra (because duh!) And then mashed taters with white gravy. The fried okra was good, nice crispy and a good veggie flavor. The taters were not so amazing and slightly broke my Texan heart. These taters were obviously a bagged instant tater solution, just add water and boom .... "mashed taters". Not so much, the texture was way too watery and soft. There was almost no density to it or flavor really. It was just a glob of white tater dust reanimated in water. So very sad. The gravy was also the same way, definitely felt like a cheap instant gravy. Now for the main attraction and hopefully redeeming factor. The chicken fried steak was almost on the small side. If it was any smaller I definitely would have been offended. Anyways, the breading was actually fairly good, it didnt just fall off as soon as you cut it. It was cooked nicely, so it was crispy and hot. The steak overall was still tasty. However with the other 2 items being almost pitiful, it made me wonder if this was a prebreaded frozen chicken fried steak. I dont know but it may be. Overall, my food was ok, nothing super good but it did the trick of filling me up. Overall - it was an ok experience. Slightly on the disappointing side since it was a country diner that had some pretty bland and instant food. The service thou was nice and I loved the retro feeling that was going on. Great food (when its not cold and soggy) terrible service. I had a door dash order tonight at Jims on 12000ish Research Blvd. When I arrived at Jims for my pickup I already had the email that it was probably done. There was one door dash delivery driver in line and 2 tables with people. The place was very quiet. I saw what looked like about 4 large to go bags packed on the counter behind the lunch counter area. After being in line for about 5 minutes Terry the manager who was frantically working on prepping to-gos greeted the doordasher lady in front of me, got her 2 orders and she was off on her way. I remained patient in line at the register, Terry never greeted or acknowledged me nor even made eye contact, but it was obvious he knew I was there...he seemed very busy, so I waited patiently. About 10 minutes in (still 2-3 bags packed on the back counter) and the waitress on shift asked if me or the guy who'd joined the line behind me were waiting to be seated or if we had a door dash. We both were awaiting door dash orders. Another 5 minutes (15 min. total) go by and I'm starting to get impatient....the waitress came back to the door and sat 2 more parties in the dining room and assisted the person behind me with his order. As she helped the guy behind me in line, Terry finally spoke again ....(he'd still not even greeted or acknowledged me or the guy behind me) Terry got upset with the waitress telling her if she was going to get that order then she should do them all...he briskly went to the kitchen. Waitress lady got the guy behind me out the door and she grabbed the only bag left on the counter, which was mine and checked that everything was packed. All but the gravy was accounted for and when we opened the chicken fried steaks the gravy was smother on them instead of on the side like they normally do. I was on my way finally....pretty upset that I'd been staring that my chicken fried steak for 20 minutes packed and ready to go....and now finding out that it was sitting there getting soggy as could be. I get to my car and Terry walks out right behind me for his smoke break. I worked in the service industry for a long time...pretty terrible service from Terry and Jims tonight. My food was cold and soggy, bad experience overall. Terry's either having a terrible night or is in the wrong industry/job. I love Jim's restaurants' food, next time I will just go check the to-go bags myself and be on my way!! :) read more

So many late nights pounding away on the keyboard and I find myself wanting breakfast. WHY did I forget about this place? I don't know but it will never happen again (making a promise to myself). I ordered the pecan pancake breakfast and it was beyond what I was hoping for. I love pancakes with a little crispiness around the edges. My visit was very eventful. What I ordered and what I first received where not the same thing. I didn't even have to tell anyone it was wrong. As soon as the person set my food down our waitress (who took our original order) came over and immediately starting apologizing. Then the manager came over a few seconds later and apologized. I never said a word. They left the wrong food sitting on the table and had the kitchen make my order again. My husband and I were recommended this place by many co-workers. After about 6 months, we finally went. I ordered a burger and fries which were very tasty. The burgers do have a grill taste to it, which is personal preference. I didn't mind it. The fries were quite good though, crispy. My husband got a special (breakfast) which had jalapenos and he was pleasantly surprised the kick it had in spice. We also ordered a short stack of pancakes. Now this is where Jim's shine. The pancakes are better than other pancakes I've had before at restaurants, the batter is sweet. Outside of the food, the staff are the most friendly people I've met. We love Jim's. I mean, really. My young son and I love Jim's, and particularly this location. We're there at least a couple of times per month. I've been taking him to this Jim's since he was an infant, so he's very familiar with it, and the long time wait staff know him too. He talks about Jim's all the time, and even asked me to take him there on his birthday. Of course, I've been going to Jim's since I was a kid myself, but this location is my favorite that I've ever been to. The restaurant is kept clean, and the original "Jim's decor" is still in tact and maintained very well. The staff is so nice, friendly, and professional. The prices can't be beat, especially on Sunday and Monday when kids eat free! The food is great here and it's always fresh. The pancakes are a winner every time, as are the burgers, the chicken fried steak (!!), the biscuits and gravy, and tortilla soup and salad. All of the breakfasts are awesome. My favorite thing about Jim's is that it really is a family place. People meet there to catch up - I see groups of ladies playing cards there all the time. Couples have a casual dinner, families take their kids out... it's just a nice laid-back family environment. Even on the weekends when it gets crowded, you never feel rushed or hurried. Ever since I was a little kid, I've been hitting the Jim's restaurants... Well, back home, it was the "Frontier Burger" on Goliad Road in San Antonio. To help locals here relate, the places in S.A. were, errrrr.... top notch. Sure, it was a little farther than "Burger Chef", but for special occasions, was so worth the extra miles in the old wood paneled station wagon. My wife loves their breakfast tacos, and the salsa they are served with. My stepson used to basically insert his face onto the biscuits with sausage gravy. The breakfasts are usually spot on, and reasonably priced. Wash it down with some solid coffee. And yes, I want ketchup for those perfect grated hash browns... But for me, Jim's has always been (and still is) about the "charcoal broiled" goodness of the hamburgers. Wrapped in paper, with one of those toothpicks with the plastic decorative fringe on them jammed through it. With a side of onion rings. Mr. Jim: Many reviews say your locations "need a renovation", or are "a little outdated". I say the opposite. Please undo your change in the onion rings, or tell me how I can get a Delorean to go back in time. You see, the old onion rings were just a pile of warm greasy stringy awesomeness, more like a haystack of oniony delight, flecked with a crispy light breaded coating. My last visit saw they had changed to be hard-coated rings, that I could use to play ring toss with a saltshaker, or roll towards a waitress if we needed her attention while waiting for a drink refill. Jim's gets four stars from me for being exactly what they try to be: a diner serving unfancy but good food. I have only been for breakfast, but each time I really like it. The place is pure diner-decorated, with booths, tables and counter service. Its usually pretty crowded on Sundays when I've been, but the wait has never been too long. I usually get one of the 'signature' breakfast plates like the "Panhandler" or "Pioneer". Couple of eggs over easy, some sort of breakfast meat and a couple of buttermilk pancakes, and I'm in a semi-coma on the couch later that morning in satiated bliss. They also came with a side of refried beans that tasted muy delicioso. The pancake was huge, it almost covered the entire plate, it was fluffy and delightful I just wished I would have told them to not put a huge glop of margarine on top. I pushed it to the side as it was melting all over my pancake and I pretended it never happened. I mean a girl has her standards, fresh butter for me please, never mind the fact I'm eating a ton of food at 1 in the morning, I draw the line at margarine! I just wanna say, this place is VERY dated. Definitely needs a renovation or a new restaurant design but it seems like this somewhat matches their concept. Old diner, friendly waitresses, quick easy breakfast, great for kids and the elderly. I would describe it as a local IHOP but better. I hate IHOP. I had the waffles, so delicious. Comes outs crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside with JIM'S big ol' face smack dabbed in the middle Served with butter and a little pot of syrup, I requested peanut butter on the side for mine. Honestly it's a coin flip on whether you're going to have a fantastic meal or one that leaves you wondering why you come to a place like this. My last breakfast there(At 1PM. I love places that serve breakfast all day long) provided me with perfect eggs and buscuits that melt in your mouth, but the chicken fried steak was drowning in gravy. The time before that my eggs were runny, the bacon tasted like it came out of a microwave and the hashbrowns were undercooked in the middle. Ok Ok so I am beginning to come to terms with my addiction in life: breakfast places. I grew up in North Austin. Always nice and settled in my lovely neighborhood. I passed this Jim's almost every day to hop onto 183. I have vague memories of eating here every now and then but never thought it was anything more than a brown version of my hated, blue ihop. Boy, does my child memory serve me wrong. The other day my brother and I were home (in North Austin) for the easter holidays. After going to the gym with my huge (powerlifting) brother I was dead tired and needed some energy. He, of course, needed a huge meal. So after much debate we headed to kerbey lane. Whoops. It's friday at 12 and apparently Kerbey forgot we were coming... not even one parking spot was open on their shady little gravel lot. So now where? Eh.. Jim's? "Yeah.. I guess... Thats fine.." We were seated immediately. Pictures flashed in my mind of soggy uncooked eggs, over buttered toast and gross looking meat entrees...OH WAIT I was thinking of ihop..JIM's was marvelous! We had a friendly waitress (whom we both thought should work else where and make lots of tips with her good looks--is that ok to say?).. I ordered "cereal combo." Don't let the name fool you--this oatmeal was complete with a bowl of very fresh fruit, two pieces of whole wheat toast, jam, and a cup of raisins OH and a cup of brown sugar. Now I'm a PICKY eater. But this was delighfully filling and delicious. My brother ordered two HUGE migas. They were monsterous and had like 4 different toppings in them. The bill: $9.95...amazingggggg. Long story short. I have only been to Jim's twice buy I can already say that I like it better than the other diners I have visited. This place is your typical diner...one that takes you back several decades...which in my opinion is a good thing. Upon entering, both times I was greeted by a friendly host. I requested a table no close to the ac and someplace quiet and he accommodated me as if my requests were no bother. The first time I visited I had breakfast and it came quickly. It was delicious. Their oatmeal comes with sides of brown sugar, butter and raisins. It was filling and the perfect consistency. Last night I went in with my husband to get a snack while I did some school work because they are open until 12. Our waitress Holly was genuinely friendly as if she truly enjoyed what she did which was pleasantly refreshing. We didn't have to ask for anything as she was great at anticipating our needs. We order the sampler appetiser with chicken strips, cheese sticks and fried mushrooms. I loved the fried mushrooms. Try them with ranch dressing. Delicious. I will definitely be back. read more
