Well, my wife wanted pancakes for breakfast and I wanted an omelette. Jim's, a restaurant we used to frequent for a long time, was just around the corner so off we went! You know, the memories flooded back as soon as we parked the car. To us, Jim's is like visiting the 1970's when we were growing up. My wife loves their pancake and so do I. It's fluffy and has that familiar old-fashioned taste of pancakes from eating it as a young person. Their omelet is old-school and still delicious. The service is fast and furious. Our server was friendly and felt like she wanted us to get our food quickly. We must have looked hungry! As for the ambiance, Jim's decor is very old school but has added some touches to be modern. A TV monitor in the waiting area and better furniture for their customers. We've been frequent customers of this eatery. The pandemic kind of pushed us away for a while but we always enjoy eating at Jim's. We will come back now and then so I'm glad Jim's still here. BTW, for lunch, try their Frontier burger and fries! This is one of my top 10 all-time favorite restaurants in the entire city of San Antonio. I take my mother to this location every Sunday for breakfast. Sometimes we have guest with us and sometimes we don't. It's usually my husband. We always asked to sit in in OKIA section or Joe's section I have absolutely no complaints. Their food is so good that the San Antonio newspaper ran in their tortilla soup as number one in the entire city. We usually come for breakfast for my mother Das her pancakes with three containers of syrup. She gets so much joy coming here, but I hate to miss any Sunday. That being said if you try this location is the number one location on yelp I don't understand why they rating is only three stars. I would give it 10 stars if I could. My only complaint is that they don't sell merchandise like mugs and T-shirts cause I would definitely buy one of each for everyone in the family and their restrooms are always dirty. They never have enough toilet paper. The toilets in the sink are always filthy the sink today in the ladies's room did not have any hand soap, and they don't put the trashcan close enough to the door that you can open the door with your paper towel and then throw it away but literally that is my only complaint I will try to remember to take pictures of my food today and post it on this yelp review until then. I ordered French toast which comes with 6 half slices cover with powered sugar. It looked great and tasted better than it looked! Sorry for no pictures. I ordered a side of bacon which was cooked to perfection.. everything arrived hot! I was served very quickly as well. The only word that comes to mind is disappointment. This is Jim's has been here longer than I have been alive and the quality has only gone down with every passing year. Today I decided to give Jim's another chance. After calling 12 times to put in an order to go, I gave up and just went to the restaurant. I asked the waitress if they had been receiving a lot of calls to which she responded "we kind of just leave it off the hook and let it ring" what a joke. I kind of just laughed at her as I didn't know what to say. I left without buying anyone and I don't really know when I'll be back. But it sure won't be for anything to go. An outdated diner with filling comfort food. I'm a long time fan of Jim's, but this location is a little further down on the list of locations I would recommend. As for the restaurant itself, the ceiling has a whole bunch of dirty and water stained tiles that are hard to miss, the lighting is extremely dim or out completely in some parts of the restaurant, the tables my group used all wobbled, and the whole place seemed like it could use an overhaul and update. Though the interior was pretty lackluster, the staff was great. Our server was very kind and patient with our larger group and checked in with us regularly. She was great and made sure we always had what we needed and wanted, and the gentleman running the register was also very kind to us as well. The food was pretty good, but not as good as some of the other locations I usually visit. I ordered the Chicken Tender Basket with Cream Gravy, French Fries, and Texas Toast. The Texas Toast was more bread than toast and we ended up referring to the butter on said bread as 'yellow' as it did not taste like butter and was rather chemically. Several of us ended up forgoing the Texas Toast because the 'yellow' really was gross. The French Fries were simply okay; they didn't have much flavor and needed a lot of help from the Cream Gravy. The gravy was fantastic, really thick and creamy with a delicious taste. The Chicken Tenders themselves were pretty good too. The breading was crisp and crunchy, the chicken was moist and fell apart pretty well, it's just that the seasoning wasn't as good as the other locations'. I don't know what it was, they just tasted slightly different. My fiancé ended up purchasing a Lemon Merengue Pie to take home with us to try (Yes, a whole pie because a whole pie is actually cheaper than two slices), and while I have mixed feelings about the pie, he's said that it's 'grown on him.' To start, the merengue on top had a nice, light and fluffy texture and looked really pretty, but didn't have much flavor to it at all, let alone any sweetness. The crust wasn't anything to write home about except that it felt a little stale, and instead of the expected creamy lemon filling for the bottom layer, it instead had the consistency of Jello. It was extremely weird, and after two bites I decided it was not worth eating. Overall, it didn't have any lemony tanginess or tartness, was rather bland, and the textures didn't match up well. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. While it's still in our refrigerator, I have a suspicion my fiancé will not end up finishing it all by himself. I'd definitely recommend Jim's to friends and family, but I don't think I'd be able to recommend this particular location. read more

They used to have a club sandwich called the "Frontier Club," it's a regular club with a hamburger patty and cheese on the menu but they took it off. I love this local chain. Known for breakfast but the burgers are highly underrated. Chargrilled with their version of burger sauce has always been a go-to and consistently made. I have had other foods that didn't really match up to the Bfast and burgers so I can not give a fifth star. I ordered a chef salad, today, for pick up. To my surprise, everything on the salad had been shaved down to paper thin, tiny, pieces, except for the hard boil egg! Talk about getting ripped off! I remember when these salads had chunks of ham, nice strips of turkey, nice pieces of tomato, strips of purple cabbage & bits of carrots. This was a random find--- but oh, what a find! The looks of this diner from the outside til you step into the doors has an old fashion, Hollywood movies feel. The decor is simple but classic. I came at 6am and a few folks were in there. Upon walking in, the waitress Carol gave me a warm smile and welcome. She immediately offered a cup of hot coffee as though she read my mind. The menu is large and assorted and they serve breakfast all day. I ordered the Jim's Quickie Breakfast that came with eggs, and diced sausage. I got the egg substitute because I can't eat egg yolk. I was very pleasantly surprised they even offered egg substitute. Most places I've visited to include high end chains don't. The food came out looking like something straight from my grandma's table! It was delicious! The waitress was absolutely amazing. She served that entire diner solo and I never had an empty cup of coffee and she did it all with a smile as if we were in her home. If you are looking for high end fancy, this might be the stop. But if you enjoy down home, classic diner feel and food, this is the place. By far the most wonderful breakfast experience since moving back to the US. read more

Great burgers, the best skinny onion rings you could ever find. a great homestyle breakfast. came for a family breakfast and we greeted with not fluffy biscuits, but an obviously hard and stale biscuit that have been put on the grill, broken up into pieces and put on a plate with some butter and brought to the table. The elderly couple I was with would never have complained, which I guess is what they are counting on, I ordered over medium eggs with crisp bacon and a pancake. I got one of the three. Why did I decide to try Jims for dinner? I have no idea. I gave it 2 stars because of the atmosphere. There was hardly anyone at the restaurant so we didn't think service would take long BUT it did. We waited 10 min for the waitress to come over and take our drink order. We ordered mozzarella sticks which weren't anything special, I'd say the same as the 99€ mozzarella sticks from Sonic. The marinara sauce was ice cold at least at Sonic it's room temperature. Onion rings were a joke. Club sandwich had a weird taste. I paid $66 for dinner we won't be going back. read more

Jim's on Hillcrest I highly recommend! My wife and I have been there for the last three times even though there is a Jim's closer to the house. The service is amazing the food is delicious but most importantly every employee greets you with a smile and is very courteous! I walked in and I wasn't impressed by the look of the place. I seated myself and took a look at the menu. My server was Nadine. The menu was the typical food you would expect. It took a bit to figure out what I wanted. After my order was taken and delivered I was forgotten about by Nadine. She cared more about her phone than her customers. I had ran out of water and she never came to refill it. I eventually had to get up and refill my water myself after over five minutes of waiting. That was very unacceptable. It wasn't packed at all. There was no excuse for bad service. The food was just okay. It tasted like you would expect it to taste like. With the horrible service I received I will not be coming back again. read more

I called the manager over. I explained I was Jewish. He said he didn't care and that they were the number one store. I said that was a tad racist. I have a soft spot for Jim's. It's been a San Antonio staple for decades. Let's be honest, it's a diner on par with Denny's or IHOP. They're not reinventing the wheel. Most of their food is frozen, not fresh. They have gigantic, Texas-sized portions, and finding more moderate offerings is hard. For instance, this morning I'm in the mood for some eggs, a single pancake, and toast. I can't get that here, I have to get the much larger Texas Two Step which I can't finish. But that's really a first world problem, right? Too much food? I like this location despite it being in Balcones Heights. The servers are *always* competent and *always* friendly. What's cool about this location is the variety of old-timers that come in here, and likely have been coming regularly for many a year. The food is decent, neither especially terrible nor earth-shatteringly good. Solid is how I'd describe it. Whether you're coming in after church on Sunday, after the club on the weekend, or anywhere in between, Jim's is a known commodity--and it's not too bad. read more

I've only gotten breakfast at Jim's before so I wasn't looking forward to coming here for lunch but the chicken over the rice pilaf was surprisingly good. Customer service was excellent. I had ordered a cherry pie for dessert and I noticed it was very soggy when eating it. I looked at the bottom and it was raw crust! It wasn't even baked at all. How disgusting. I have no idea why, but my octogenarian grandmother loves this place. She shops at Neimans, travels Europe, and prides herself on her refined palate... and yet, she suggests this place for meals more often than I'd care to admit. This past weekend we went for Sunday brunch, and she had a taco (did I mention she's also a size double zero?), while I tried the enchiladas (no bueno!); my boss suggested in the previous week and I'd had a Chef Salad then. Food is usually pretty good, service is attentive, and the restaurant, while outdated, is clean and well cared for. This is also a surprisingly busy location. I've been here countless times, and can recommend the chicken tortilla soup, any of the omelets, the burgers, and the salads, but I would personally go elsewhere for tacos and would NOT go for the enchiladas again. Your grandparents (or parents, let's not age-discriminate here!) may be as sophisticated or simple as they want to be, and this is easily an acceptable place to meet them for a quick lunch or weekend breakfast. read more

We drive past this restaurant probably a dozen times a week, but had been warned off by the description from some friends that it was "like Denny's." Well, in that it was designed in the 1950's and some of the menu is probably still the same, yes, that could be true. But Edward, our server, was fantastic -- a real professional -- and, although the wait was overly long) the food was above satisfactory. Not to trash another chain, but I've never been able to say either of those things about Denny's. Spouse had a Texas omelet - three kinds of meat and lots of cheese in a huge omelet which spouse pronounced as very good. He was in the mood for sliced tomatoes, so skipped the grits or hash browns. To please me, though, he did accept the biscuits -- Spouse is gluten free, so couldn't eat them. I've been hankering for Jim's biscuits after reading Cat C's and others' reviews and I'm sorry, I don't get it. The biscuits are big, yes. Fluffy yes, But biscuits are supposed to have their own distinctive flavor. These ones were essentially tasteless. It didn't help that they were served with a "butter flavored spread" that professes to be -- and tastes like -- 45% vegetable oil. Wrong, wrong, wrong. My order of a "senior grilled tilapia" with mac and cheese, though, was excellent. The piece of fish was grilled lightly, and almost literally melted in my mouth. The mac and cheese was just fine too. Overall, I could give them 4 stars within their "type", sort of a diner category -- except for the inordinately long wait -- my dish came out 35 minutes after we arrived, and Spouse's was another 10 minutes after that -- and the frigid air temperature which had me almost ready to plunge my hands into my mac and cheese to get warm. So three stars for the experience - sorry Edward, you are first class and deserve five stars all by yourself. read more

This restaurant is filthy. I walked in and was told to sit anywhere I wanted. Half the rest was seated or the tables were filthy. I finally sat at the least dirty table, and it took twenty minutes for a waiter to acknowledge me. The breakfast was fine, but the waiter did not bring any jam, and abandoned me after the food was delivered. Never check on me or refilled my coffee. He did wipe my table upon approach, and left a pool of water on the table. I dried the table with ten napkins. No one seemed to have a clue on how to run a restaurant. I saw a woman (maybe a manager) keep ducking into the back. I finally had to leave, and waked to the cashier to pay, and explained that I had never received a check.
