    Jim's old school marquis

What a cozy spot! I stopped in today for a late breakfast and was very well taken care of. My drink was handed to me as I sat down and the food was hot and delicious. Will definitely return on future lunch breaks to enjoy the comfortable atmosphere and helpful staff.

Chicken Tenders with Cream Gravy, French Fries, and Texas Toast
    Nayra B.

An outdated diner with filling comfort food. I'm a long time fan of Jim's, but this location is a little further down on the list of locations I would recommend. As for the restaurant itself, the ceiling has a whole bunch of dirty and water stained tiles that are hard to miss, the lighting is extremely dim or out completely in some parts of the restaurant, the tables my group used all wobbled, and the whole place seemed like it could use an overhaul and update. Though the interior was pretty lackluster, the staff was great. Our server was very kind and patient with our larger group and checked in with us regularly. She was great and made sure we always had what we needed and wanted, and the gentleman running the register was also very kind to us as well. The food was pretty good, but not as good as some of the other locations I usually visit. I ordered the Chicken Tender Basket with Cream Gravy, French Fries, and Texas Toast. The Texas Toast was more bread than toast and we ended up referring to the butter on said bread as 'yellow' as it did not taste like butter and was rather chemically. Several of us ended up forgoing the Texas Toast because the 'yellow' really was gross. The French Fries were simply okay; they didn't have much flavor and needed a lot of help from the Cream Gravy. The gravy was fantastic, really thick and creamy with a delicious taste. The Chicken Tenders themselves were pretty good too. The breading was crisp and crunchy, the chicken was moist and fell apart pretty well, it's just that the seasoning wasn't as good as the other locations'. I don't know what it was, they just tasted slightly different. My fiancé ended up purchasing a Lemon Merengue Pie to take home with us to try (Yes, a whole pie because a whole pie is actually cheaper than two slices), and while I have mixed feelings about the pie, he's said that it's 'grown on him.' To start, the merengue on top had a nice, light and fluffy texture and looked really pretty, but didn't have much flavor to it at all, let alone any sweetness. The crust wasn't anything to write home about except that it felt a little stale, and instead of the expected creamy lemon filling for the bottom layer, it instead had the consistency of Jello. It was extremely weird, and after two bites I decided it was not worth eating. Overall, it didn't have any lemony tanginess or tartness, was rather bland, and the textures didn't match up well. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. While it's still in our refrigerator, I have a suspicion my fiancé will not end up finishing it all by himself. I'd definitely recommend Jim's to friends and family, but I don't think I'd be able to recommend this particular location.

Drove across town just for their club sandwich and was HUGELY disappointed when they gave me this. According to the waitress they might be running out of bread? How can you call yourself a cook and be proud to serve this? They did take it off the bill but I was still greatly disappointed. Will NEVERA return to this location again.

    THE Frontier Burger n rings

I love this local chain. Known for breakfast but the burgers are highly underrated. Chargrilled with their version of burger sauce has always been a go-to and consistently made. I have had other foods that didn't really match up to the Bfast and burgers so I can not give a fifth star. But the speed of service, quality of food and local nostalgia (I have been eatin here since they had a drive up car hops) I will always hit up a location when I just don't want anything fancy/fusion.

    They offer egg substitute

This was a random find--- but oh, what a find! The looks of this diner from the outside til you step into the doors has an old fashion, Hollywood movies feel. The decor is simple but classic. I came at 6am and a few folks were in there. Upon walking in, the waitress Carol gave me a warm smile and welcome. She immediately offered a cup of hot coffee as though she read my mind. The menu is large and assorted and they serve breakfast all day. I ordered the Jim's Quickie Breakfast that came with eggs, and diced sausage. I got the egg substitute because I can't eat egg yolk. I was very pleasantly surprised they even offered egg substitute. Most places I've visited to include high end chains don't. The food came out looking like something straight from my grandma's table! It was delicious! The waitress was absolutely amazing. She served that entire diner solo and I never had an empty cup of coffee and she did it all with a smile as if we were in her home. If you are looking for high end fancy, this might be the stop. But if you enjoy down home, classic diner feel and food, this is the place. By far the most wonderful breakfast experience since moving back to the US.

I'm sorry to be giving Jim's a 1 star review because they've always been pretty good & have been around since I can remember. However; what they've done is unacceptable. I ordered a chef salad, today, for pick up. To my surprise, everything on the salad had been shaved down to paper thin, tiny, pieces, except for the hard boil egg! Talk about getting ripped off! I remember when these salads had chunks of ham, nice strips of turkey, nice pieces of tomato, strips of purple cabbage & bits of carrots. Hope y'all bring back the old way of making the great salads from the past.

    Onion rings?

Why did I decide to try Jims for dinner? I have no idea. I gave it 2 stars because of the atmosphere. There was hardly anyone at the restaurant so we didn't think service would take long BUT it did. We waited 10 min for the waitress to come over and take our drink order. We ordered mozzarella sticks which weren't anything special, I'd say the same as the 99€ mozzarella sticks from Sonic. The marinara sauce was ice cold at least at Sonic it's room temperature. Onion rings were a joke. Club sandwich had a weird taste. I paid $66 for dinner we won't be going back.

    The Texas Two-Step Breakfast($8.29).

I walked in and I wasn't impressed by the look of the place. I seated myself and took a look at the menu. My server was Nadine. The menu was the typical food you would expect. It took a bit to figure out what I wanted. After my order was taken and delivered I was forgotten about by Nadine. She cared more about her phone than her customers. I had ran out of water and she never came to refill it. I eventually had to get up and refill my water myself after over five minutes of waiting. That was very unacceptable. It wasn't packed at all. There was no excuse for bad service. The food was just okay. It tasted like you would expect it to taste like. With the horrible service I received I will not be coming back again.

    grilled pieces of biscuits.

grilled biscuits? raw bacon? no water? pancakes were fine. I've lived in San Antonio since 1968 and I can remember when going to Jim's restaurants was a fun and delicious experience. Great burgers, the best skinny onion rings you could ever find. a great homestyle breakfast. came for a family breakfast and we greeted with not fluffy biscuits, but an obviously hard and stale biscuit that have been put on the grill, broken up into pieces and put on a plate with some butter and brought to the table. The elderly couple I was with would never have complained, which I guess is what they are counting on, I ordered over medium eggs with crisp bacon and a pancake. I got one of the three. Runny eggs and raw bacon. we came because this older couple wanted to come here. I won't be back.

Yup that's a exactly what it is

It not hard to see why the restaurant is closing so many locations. The food, service, has gone down, and the prices have gone up.

We ordered the capoeira burger as a small combo. Also ordered one each of the following tacos: luchador fish, karate shrimp, and capoeira steak. The burger my friend ordered: she said it was good, but could have used a little more seasoning. (Ordered without the white cheddar). The fries were very good, hit and crispy. Not warm and soggy. The three tacos in order of my personal favorites: karate shrimp, capoeira steak, and luchador fish. The karate shrimp aside from the fact it had wasabi and I don't normally like wasabi, it pairs very well with the shrimp in this case. It was flavorful, the shrimp were a good size, meaty, and delicious. The capoeira steak was good. Flavorful, not chewy, and also paired with the Parmesan-onion crisp, made it. The fish taco was good, but it was a bit fishy for my taste. The service was friendly and nice. The place is very clean. I would like to go back to try the burger myself and some of the other items on the menu.

On the day of the party, we arrived about 20 minutes early to put tableclothes on the table and were introduced to our waitress, Tyler. It's was in those moments that I knew that Tyler was going to do the bare minimum and knew that Dave & Buster's may not have been the best option to host a child's birthday party. I've been hosting my child's birthday parties at various places and every associate assigned to me always helped me. Tyler didn't even offer to help put the tableclothes on the tables and it was only two. So yeah I instantly knew that I got a bare minimum waitress! I paid the required gratuity but didn't add anything extra. Tyler rolled the diced and missed out. She provided minimal service and got the minimal tip. The three stars are for the managers, Mario and Chris, who were very professional and kind. About the food: the kids had Mac and cheese and chicken. They loved it! I ordered a wing platter for the parents and a round of shots! lol I honestly wished I had a better server! Tyler was truly the worst part of the transaction. I ordered three tacos and a drink pulled up to the window when I got there. I watched a man who was the cook/taco maker on his cell phone. He stayed on it for about 1 to 2 minutes put his phone down, then proceeded to take tortillas out of the tortilla holder grab two shell eggs, crack them, and cook them carry the eggs over on a spatula and put them on the tortillas grabbed two pieces of bacon with his hands, went over to where they get the meat for the fajita tacos, used tongs to take it out and put it on the cutting board, chopped it on the cutting board put it in a bowl walked over to where the tortillas were poured onto the tortilla and kept it in place with his hands. Then he grabbed a handful of shredded cheese and put it on each of the tacos, wrapped up the tacos and foil while doing this I noticed he rubbed his hands on his shirt at least a couple of times. Here's the good part. THE WHOLE TIME HE WAS NOT WEARING GLOVES OR ATTEMPTED TO PROPERLY WASH HIS HANDS DURING THIS PROCESS. I tried to get his attention, but a female coworker saw me walked over to the window asked me if she could help me. I told her that I basically watched this man make my food handle his cell phone, raw product, and cooked food all without wearing gloves. Her response was did you still want the food? . I was like of course, not. Then the man walked over and asked what the problem was. I gave him a shorter version of what I told the lady and asked him , you doesn't wear gloves? He said no, and I said that that is unsanitary and against health department regulations and unsafe, especially considering what's going on with the recalls that are happening with restaurant food. I told him I work for a restaurant and yes, I mentioned the name of the restaurant I work for and that we always wear gloves because it is health department regulations, my companies policies, and just plain safe and the right way to do things. His answer was well we are not ( company name )! I was like are you serious? He replied yes the lady asked me again. Do you still want the food? ( R u F*CKING KIDDING ME ). I told them that I will take care of this the way I see fit and have a good day. Sidenote: there was somebody at the drive-through speaker ordering food. I purposely turned around, drove up beside them told him exactly what happened. He was disgusted and said I'm leaving and drove off. Guys nobody's perfect and sometimes things happen, Human mistake. But to purposely and blatantly do something that is 100% wrong and could get people sick or worse and not have a care in the world and have an "I don't give a shit" attitude thoroughly boggles my mind. So this is me passing on information that we should know about. Yes, I will follow up with this if for any reason, the fact that they didn't care and thought they were doing nothing wrong. Sorry for this being so long, but knowledge is power and I wanted to let you all know.
