a bowl of beef and vegetables
    Chris C.

I had a craving for Korean Pork Bone Soup and a Korean co-worker recommended this place, not too far from our workplace. It's located in the food court of Galleria Supermarket. The pictures of the other dishes on their menu looked tempting but I decided to stick with my original thought and craving. It was still literally boiling in the bowl when I picked it up from the counter and I had to wait a while for it to cool down before tasting it. It looked good. Mmm, it tasted good too. The broth was very flavourful and the meat was fall off the bone tender. It was accompanied by a bowl of purple rice, kimchi, and a couple of other condiments. While I can't say it's the best pork bone soup I've ever had, it was tasty and filled the void quite well. I might try a different dish next time. Yes, next time...

Foodcourt stall selling Korean dishes in Galleria grocery store. Picture menus hanged overhead with English names and prices of different dishes. I ordered Pork Bone Stew and waited in the foodcourt for my order number to be called out. That took around 5 minutes. For $7.99, the meal consisted of pork bone stew; purple rice, and 3 side dishes. The stew was spicy, but didn't have the myriad layers of flavors found at other restaurants. $7.99 was an ok price, though i have seen cheaper with unlimited tea, which this place did not offer.

Affordable Korean food served at Thornhill Galleria Supermarket Food court. Cannot expect the quality is as high as the regular restaurant, yet the portion is generous and quality is decent. My family favourite is always the Beef Soup with rice. This version is not the milky color and rich beef bone soup. They give you sea salt that you can adjust the saltiness on your preference. The rice cake soup is nicely done as well. Portion is generous with rice cake and some beef in eggy broth. Beef bulgogi has big portion but a little dry. Wish they would put more sauce on it.

This little restaurant at the food court area of Galleria has absolutely amazing food at a reasonable price. I ordered the seafood tofu soup with rice for only 8.99 plus tax. That's cheaper than a McDonald combo. The pot was piping hot when I got it from the counter. It was just delightful with silky tofu, tasty shrimp and the broth just had the right amount of heat and seasoning. The rice was also cooked perfectly. If you are around the Yonge and Steeles area, check out this small joint. You will not be disappointed.

    seafood pancake - $9.99

Getting a seafood pancake for $9.99 is a pretty good deal, especially because it's the same size as seafood pancakes many Korean restaurants in the area sell for like $16-$18. That being said, it could also be better. Pros: Half of the pancake was crispy, or well, most of the edge parts of that side were. There was a decent amount of octopus in there. There was a lot of green onion. The price was good. If you ask them, they'll give you roasted grain/barley tea. Cons: Half of the pancake wasn't crispy. It was slightly thick at parts, and that was chewy and not particularly pleasant. I'm not sure how they sent out a pancake that was that uneven looking in color, but okay. I think octopus was the only kind of seafood in the pancake. That being said, the amount of octopus in there did kinda make up for the lack of other seafood. I'm not sure why they couldn't just call it an octopus pancake. The green onions were in really big pieces. I like green onion, but I don't like to bite into just green onion. I wouldn't crave the pancake here, but I wouldn't mind ordering it again.

Combo#0: Marinated Pork Rib Hot Pot, 3 Sides and Purple Rice $9.99 plus tax

Located in the food court of Galleria Supermarket Jin Mee specialises in Korean Hot Pot dishes. Found myself in the area and decided to grab a bite in the food court. My Korean food expertise is limited to Kalbi, Bulgogi and Pork Bone Soup so tried the #0 Combo which was the Marinated Pork Ribs in Hot Pot. When they mean "Hot Pot" they really mean "Hot Pot"! Not spicy hot but temperature hot! The pork ribs literally comes out boiling in the broth so give it a few minutes to cool down a bit or you'll scald your mouth in it! Its actually not bad at all as the marinated pork ribs are in a spicy sweet mix with rice rolls and bean sprouts. The combo comes with purple rice and 3 sides (Kimchi, Sweet Potatoes, Daikon Radish). All for $9.99 plus tax. Service was polite and took about 5 minutes or so to get the food. Its not the best Korean food I've had, but it's a good value for money in the food court.

    Pork bone soup!

Jin Mee is a good place for lunch if you work around the Yonge/Steeles area. It is inside the food court in the Galleria supermarket. I can't say much about other dishes, because my default go-to is the pork bone soup, which they do a pretty decent job on. A year or so back before their store name changed, the pork bone soup is of variable quality. One of the big no-no's for pork bone soup is the pork not being tender and there have been some not so good ones there. Ever since they have changed to "Jin Mee", I find their pork bone soup to be quite consistently good (tender and flavourful). Can't go wrong with that for under $10! There is no ambience to speak of, being in a food court and all. So I would recommend going there alone for a quick lunch only.

Was doing some shopping at Galleria when the hunger bug hit. I saw a smallish food court with a good spread. I was tempted for kfc ( korean fried chicken) but the 30 minute wait was a little too much. Saw the selection of food offerings and was pulled in by the smell. I tried the pork bone soup and their version is a much cleaner broth with good flavor accompanied by wild rice. The food is good and very fairly priced.

The takeout kimchi jigae (stew). Portion is about the size of an adult fist. Business card for scale.

Bear in mind that when you do come here, the side dishes are limited to two free rounds. The main dishes however are large enough portions that you will probably need to take them home. Ambiance is casual, interior is clean, and service is fast and attentive. We ordered a couple of dishes and they all came out relatively quickly. The banchan (small side dishes) are refillable once only. My favourite banchan of the day were the bean sprouts and eggplant. There were lots of vegetarian and vegan options, such as the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings, Vegetables Bibimbap, Mushrooms Bibimbap, Vegetables Udon, Vegetables Fried Rice, Kimchi Pancake, Soondubu-jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew) in different variations, and more. The menu was pretty extensive, covering the most typical Korean dishes from the stews and grilled items, to a few Korean-Chinese dishes (such as Jajangmyeon) and everything in between. Steamed Vegetables Dumplings were quite small individually, but came in a sizeable portion. I liked the green onion garnish. Taste-wise, they were alright. Vegetables Bibimbap was excellent - good amount of mixed vegetables (spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, carrot strips, lettuce, bean sprouts) and the fried egg was perfectly crispy on the outer edges, with a still gooey and runny yolk. Grilled Croaker was also decent. It had a lot of small bones as it was a whole fish. It came served with purple rice, and we chose to add on extra lettuce. Seafood Knife Cut Noodles came in a big portion - with lots of slippery, thick udon noodles, pieces of seafood (mussels, clams, squid, shrimps, octopus), and a little big of vegetables (zucchini, carrot, onion). They came in a nice seafood-infused broth - perfect for a cold winter day. I'd come again for the variety of menu items they offer (especially the wide selection of vegetarian options), satisfying tastes, and great & efficient service.

Definitely not my first time here as I've come with family or friends over the past 15+ years, every time, leaving very satisfied. Made sure to arrive for opening time to get a table right away since based on past experience, the wait can take some time, especially for dinner or on the weekends. Of course, had to order my two favourite menu items: 물냉면 - Mool naengmyun (Cold Noodles) and 김치찜 - Kimchi jjim (Braised Kimchi with Pork Belly). Have tried their other dishes in the past, which are pretty standard, but always find myself still gravitating back to these two. The slushy broth is always so tasty and refreshing! They also bring out a good variety of 반찬 - banchan (side dishes). Parking was easy to find this time since we got there early, but sometimes you have to circle around a few times or park at a neighbouring plaza and walk over. Hoping they reopen somewhere else soon!

It was packed with the usual high-decibel level. This food is the closest taste-wise (spice levels) to Korean food which we have enjoyed in South Jeolla Province in Korea. I devoured a lovely doenjang jjigae (fermented soybean stew). Perfectly seasoned. Sooo satisfying. Spouse had the yukkaejjang (shredded spicy beef soup with lots of gochugaru - chili flakes). Both ttukbegae bowls came with purple rice and banchan. DIVINE. Service was efficient. Polite. PRO-TIP:.They've opened a store directly next door which sells house made banchan, Korean sausage (chapsal sundae) and other prepared dishes.

We also didn't see the previous owner when picking up. We totally regret that we didn't come back sooner to support the old man owner while he was still there. We really like him and his passion for his food and his generosity. I hope the owner who ran the shop before is enjoying his happy retired life and finally gets to move back to his country and reconnect with his family. Food-wise, it's been a while since we had the collagen soup, but it feels a bit bland compared to what we had in the past. However, I'm glad they gave us some salt and pepper on the side because adding that does elevate the soup a lot more and you can add to your liking. It's just a bit odd that they packaged the warmed soup in a plastic bag for takeout. The fried chicken is good but needed a dipping sauce (which it came with on the side) for flavour; it's not as juicy and the batter isn't as fluffy as I once remembered it. Also, the prices are higher, which could be due to the rise in costs, but there are no more takeout specials; we're paying the same rate as if we were dining in. Portion-wise, it's just barely enough to feed two for $45, including tax. Though I did have a side piece of bread at home, which was all that's needed for a more filling meal. The soup includes rice and two side dishes. All in all still a delicious meal.

Disclaimer: this review is for my visit in the summer of 2023…read more I can't get over all the 4-5 star reviews for this place. I have been wanting to try this place for a while since there aren't too many Korean restaurants that specialize in Seol-lung-tang in Toronto. So when I invited my sister out for our monthly lunch date, I was very very excited. Entering the restaurant, I was shocked by how dumpy the place was as some reviewers described the place as cozy. There were maybe less than 10 tables with wobbly wooden partitions haphazardly strewn about in between them. The black tabletops had visible wipe marks from being wiped down with unclean cloth. There was also an off putting smell that I couldn't quite pinpoint to and this should have been my cue to leave but we decided to give it a try since we drove some way to eat here. Since Han Oak claims to specialize in their soups, we ordered their Tteuk-Seol-lung-tang (Special beef bone soup) in both regular broth and spicy broth. Our soups arrived in tiny earthen bowls that the word "Tteuk" describing the menu item was put to shame. Despite that "Tteuk" was supposed to have extra meat and larger than their regular size, our portions were dismal. However, the small portion in this case turned out to be a blessing as I knew that the off putting smell I had smelled upon entering the restaurant was coming from the actual soups themselves. Against my better judgement, we ate the soups and both got sick later that day. There was nothing special about the flavours of their soup nor was it really a product of a long-boil as they claim. The soup was milky (typical of Korean bone soups) but light on depth and flavour which was beyond disappointing. Also, typically in Korea, any restaurant that specializes in these types of long-boil soups have superb kimchi; unfermented napa cabbage kimchi and well fermented radish kimchi. The kimchi that came out with our meal, both napa cabbage and radish, were too sour and well beyond being acceptable as a banchan. They should have cooked with it instead of serving it as a side. The lone server was busy staring into her phone the whole time we were eating and this ridiculous meal came to a little over $50. I will not be returning to this restaurant and my search for an authentic Seol-lung-tang in Toronto will continue.
