Entire store closed for a week during the hottest time of year for "an out-of-town wedding". Must be nice to have enough money that you can shut down your entire business for a week. But it would have been nice if you'd updated your hours or website so people weren't driving over to see a closed store. Equal parts proud and ashamed to say my fiancé and I get ice cream from here on average twice a week. It's maybe a block or two away from where I work and we've made it a regular practice on my later days to have dessert before dinner so that we can get to them before they close at 7 (the one time we cut it close they insisted on staying open for us long enough to order) I am positive on certain nights of the week they stay open later to accommodate late night customers which is really nice. Their cherry blossom is the best cherry flavored ice cream I have ever had. Pistachio and southern peach definitely get an honorable mention. I also had the soup of the day which was tomato bisque, it was good but sorry i missed the 10 veggie soup which they do on Friday. I also had the hand squeezed lemonade which was delicious. I played the juke box too and was a little disappointed that I only got 3 songs for a dollar. After my meal I learned they have a 10% veterans discount. They offer it to FD, EMT & PD as well. On a hot day while you are trying to walk off your big lunch, you see an shop sign! what is the 1st thing it would come to your mind? In my case I always remember my childhood and good memories and usually they are pretty persuasive. As you can probably tell I ended up ordering ;) They don't have indoor seating at the moment and they sell from side window. They have a big variety on menu. I had a rum raisin on a small cone. It definitely hit the spot. I loved it and I enjoyed it. Nice 50s themed diner/cafe. We only stopped in here for ice cream but they have a full menu including hot dogs and sandwiches. The family tried the chocolate, maple walnut, and blueberry flavors and all were great! If you order ice cream in the small sugar cone it's served in plastic holders which makes it nice and clean for the kids. Cute place, friendly staff. I give it three stars because honestly, the ice cream was nothing special. We spent $36 on the five of us. That's an average of $7.20 per person and we didn't even get toppings. We ordered one milkshake, three cones with two scoops, and one cone with one scoop. Not impressed at all. 1. Ice cream is subpar at best. Did not taste good at all. Way overpriced. 2. They have the cool car table which they promptly kicked a family of 6 out of just in case some dip wad members or charity contributors come in. How does this make any sense. Totally obnoxious. Like you're not important if you don't become an Investor. 3. The whole place makes you feel that kids aren't really welcomed. From the sign on the jukebox stating don't let your kids near this thing. 4. Literally they have a sign outside that says no photos allowed. So if you want to take a selfie with a friend or a family photo. NOPE. You'd think the world was ending. I find that so stupid. 5. One of the employees was just rude. Major turn off. 6. They locked the doors at 8:45 pm and as we were exiting we realiZes the door was locked. At least have someone stand by the door to let people out. I wasn't impressed. read more

This is my second stop at Jitterbugs and my first visit for a menu item other than ice cream. As an ice cream shop, this place is great. Giffords of Maine ice cream is irresistible, creamy, and delicious. As a place for a quick bite it is woefully deficient. My hotdog was $5 for mustard, ketchup, cheese, and chili (pretty sure it was from a can). The chili had to be heated in a microwave and still came out cold and $3 for a glass of tea. Man was I disappointed. The price point is way off in my opinion and should be far more tasty for the money. As a favor, here is the hot dog chili recipe from my hometown favorite diner. Soooo, I usually give a review after 2 visits. I think I've decided off of my first impromptu stop. I love to try local businesses and support small business. It's a hobby of mine. I was in the hunt for something cold like ice cream, but in my rush and seeing the moo moo ice cream place closed in a 91 degree day since it opened only at night, the Jitterbugs sidewalk sign beckoned me in to try a virgin daiquiri or colada. I realized it was a "diner" that served ice cream. This place is the case of, "let's open a store because it's fun, yet, we never ran a restaurant before." The most unhappy diner I've ever been to. A silent jukebox, 5 customers sadly eating their food, and big mouth me. I didn't grow up in this era. Four of the other customers did and I'm sure they were only there for the theme because the ambiance was not there and I'm finding this in a lot of places in the city. A discouragement and sign of why ppl don't move here, but when it comes to a "diner" or gathering place, music would be a good idea. It's a shame when you expect your customers to pay for it. Come on. Now I didn't read any reviews, but given the weird vibe I got when I walked in, I decided on getting my food "to go." It seems that every​ place I go to, there are underage kids running it. It's cheap labor and it's family, but it sucks. They don't give the right passion an adult or owner can give. If you aren't a chain, get with it. People don't want zombies or mice serving them. It's annoying and they are slow and always look at each other doing eye ebonics on what to do next. You know Mom or Dad is down the street gabbing about how great they are that they have a cute overpriced eatery. In this case, they donate their cash cab proceeds to the youth. I say, let people sit in that damn car and make some money in that place to donate a nice fat check.. When I came home and read the reviews, it was undoubtedly the vibe I received. "Is she going to sit in our cab while waiting for her food that we will take extra long scooping into bread for her sandwich so maybe she will and we can yell at her?" Well, I was oblivious, but I'm glad I did not. This will be lucky to stay open. I posted a picture of my chicken salad sandwich. I almost got tuna and saw this had my favorite grapes and walnuts. It cost more and I regret getting it. It tastes like a pre-made salad I've bought a grocery store. Aldi's comes to mind, but I will verify. I also do not think it is worth the price paid for it, 3 spicy crackers, and 3 sliced sweet pickles that I'll bet they cut a whole one from to save money. Sorry, this is bad. No free chips, pretzels or a break with a drink ( I got the fresh squeezed lemonade which was good and $3.99). It's like a slap in the face to people that try to find parking and out of allllll those places to eat, they pick you and they get stingy eats that they pay for. It's pretty, but so is a museum that has authentic memorabilia. If that's what makes you happy, then this is the place for you. Popped into this place for a quick bite during Old Town's First Friday night. It closes at 9pm on Fridays, but we were advised that their menu is significantly reduced at 7pm...limited to hot dogs, egg/tuna/chicken salad sandwiches. Hubs and I each got a hot dog topped with melted cheese and chili ($5.99/ea) and chips. Hubs got a root beer float and I ordered an ice water. (Which staff promptly asked if "a bottle of water would be okay." An obvious upcharge, but I was figured it was minor so I agreed.) We sat down in a booth and they brought out the hot dogs to us. It was just your average size hot dog, with 2 teaspoons of chili and a sprinkling of shredded (not melted) cheese. We paid extra for chips...I'm not sure how much we paid, but they are your basic Lays, barbecue or Fritos. Overall, it was a poor value. $26, including tip. One star. Constructive criticism: -You need a bit more chili and cheese to justify calling your hot dog a chili and cheese hot dog. Just saying. -Consider including chips when you're charging $6 for a hotdog. Or at least offer better chips, i.e. Route 66 -Train your staff that body language speaks volumes. (Clearly, our hot dogs were not something they were excited to prepare around 7:30pm...) Overall, tip for my fellow Yelpers is to come here for ice cream and the retro decor. (Which is how they got 2 stars.) Don't waste your time and money on food when there are other better tasting, better value options in Old Town. We won't come back for lackluster food, but are maybe willing to perhaps give the ice-cream another try. Maybe. However...not before heading to try out Moo Moo Junction or even going Fosters for our go-to milkshakes. Such a shame...I was really hoping this place would embody our small-town, Old Town charm. read more

Hot day, festival in the Harris pavilion, kids want ice cream. I wait in line, finally get our ice-cream, meanwhile my friend with her kids and my kids get into that cool "car" booth. what do you think? Can't sit there. Here's the deal: that pretty booth at the window is reserved for members-only use. No matter that other large tables are occupied, and there are 6 of us, 4 being young kids who would not be safe sitting at the "counter". Okay I said, let me just sit down and read up on your membership information (they gave me a sheet when I was buying ice-cream). NOPE. Even if I would pay $75 a year I'd still not be welcome there, because that booth is ADULTS ONLY. So there are adults who pay that money in order to be sure no kid ever sits in that cool car booth. I do not understand this. They were dying something about charity, but all I heard was: "you are excluded because you have kids". We got up and left, and sat on the bench near the book store. $17 dollars got me 3 ice-creams and a "kids are not welcome". Because even if the ice-cream was good, it is not worth the aggravation: I am not getting ice-cream if I am not with kids, if they're with me, they will want to sit there, and the story will repeat itself. And just overall, what a weird policy! A place that does not like kids can't have the right soul for ice-cream! Minus 2 local families for them, I hope those "memberships" offset that. read more

Jitterbugs Ice Cream is like stepping in a modern time capsule. While it maintains amazing interior design with a vintage 50's theme, it's modern and fun. The ice cream is very good, and remains similar to Hershey's brand ice cream. All the flavors taste very similar and are very delicious. The service is good, but speed needs major improvement. The employees look overwhelmed and it seems like they need more seasonal summer hires. I love the vintage car seat booth in the front (to your right as you walk in) but it's always reserved which is stupid. I've never seen a group sitting there. The flavor I like isn't always there (muddy boots) which takes away the dependability and stability factor for me. Once some customers find a flavor they like, they want to return and know it's available. I am okay with changing flavors because they're all good; however this is something the management might consider. Prices are about average and facilities are verrrryy clean from what I can tell.
