Great local ice cream for a visit with family or guests. You can't beat a true self-made ice cream spot that has a tie to the local community. May as well enjoy their limited summer season for what it's good for - exploring some flavors. They have a lot of options that tend to rotate through as they experiment and some staples. It's worth exploring some different things with cones, dips or other normal options. The space can get very busy in the on season so be ready to queue up. Be patient and just enjoy your visit and the neat walk up. read more

5 stars for size and quality, the portions are absolutely huge and taste amazing. Prices are a bit steep though, I ended up paying over $10 for a double scoop with a cone. Lovely and chill outdoor back patio area with a few toys for kids and such. read more

Oh my tastebuds!!! Stopped by after dinner nearby with some friends and the line was super long almost to the entrance sign, but this place gives Chick-fil-A efficiency vibes... they had someone about a third of the way down taking orders on a paper for people to give to the front window for payment and then another window for pickup! The only thing I could recommend is knowing the menu in advance because the menu board is not where the person was taking orders. It's been three weeks and I'm still itching to go back! This place is amazing. We went there after having dinner across the street. The quality of the ice cream is top notch and the portions are generous. The atmosphere relaxed and seating areas are well shaded. The service was pretty quick and for the portion size I think the prices are pretty reasonable. read more

Peterson's Ice cream Depot is on Main Street in Clifton. Very charming location . They take orders at the arrival window and then you go around to the Departure window for pick up. There is plenty of seating and the place is decorated nicely. I e creams were ok, nothing to brag about . They have seasonal flavors , shakes , sundae, malts and floats. read more

Peterson's is a staple in Clifton, VA. They have a variety of ice cream flavors, Sundaes and shakes. To place an order, you order through the order window in the back of the building and then pick up your order through the window in the front of the building. My husband I ordered a scoop each. All their seating is outdoors. They have a large connect 4 game you can play as well in the back. read more

Very cute and cozy family own ice cream spot with aesthetically pleasing decor and outdoor seating spaces. We tried the Chocolate Drama, Cafe Marcus and Cookies and Creams. which had a very nice and strong coffee taste. The chocolate had a very rich taste and cafe was strong. Okay ice cream place. While they offer a lot of flavors nothing about the taste really distinguished itself. The prices were a bit expensive for the offerings. Service gets a plus and the employees are polite. It helps to study the menu boards and know what you want before reaching the order taker. With that I noticed a bit of impatience on the part of the order taker when two sets of customers had a lot of questions about the menu and flavors and weren't quite ready to order. The location is very convenient if you are visiting Clifton, VA, as the parlor is located is the center of this small town. Parking may be hard to find especially in the summer as there are lots of visitors to Clifton; however, as mentioned previously, Clifton isn't that large and so at most one may walk 100 yards from parking to the parlor. Overall I give Peterson's a solid 3 out of 5 stars. read more

I've been coming to Peterson's for years and it's a great stop when you're in Clifton. A rotating menu with some staples, tons of seating, and an overall friendly vibe. The service is always great, everyone is friendly, and you get your order quickly. It's a bit pricey, but a nice treat every now and then. read more

It was pretty good! I ordered a milkshake and it was advertised that they make it very thick which I was excited about. Although, it was actually not too thick and had a thickness of a regular milkshake which was a bit of a let down. I ordered a blueberry and strawberry flavored milkshake and I did not taste it too well in the milkshake. I mainly just tasted the vanilla ice cream. Parking is difficult especially on a busy Sunday afternoon! Although, it was nice treat after hiking near by. read more

Let me start with the prices. $6.50 for one scoop of ice cream is outrageous. Especially considering there is no store front but rather just a window. The service was fine, everyone seemed nice. As someone who goes out of their way to find ice cream any time I'm in. A new area I was sorely disappointed but his ice cream. I ordered the golden toffee. It was just very over powering butterscotch flavor. There isn't much depth (no mix ins). I've had better tub ice cream from the store before. Overall for the price this location is not worth coming to. read more

Excellent handmade ice cream. I had a scoop of coffee and a scoop of dulce de leche (they have creative names for the flavors which I don't remember) on a waffle cone. I really enjoyed both flavors. The only downside of this place is how popular and crowded it is. On warm evenings be prepared to wait a good 30 minutes to place your order and another 10 mins to receive it. read more

Such a fun family place! While there's a slight walk involved, good to burn a few calories! A local favorite. I'm glad Peterson's Ice Cream is in the town of Clifton. This is a place all I know have enjoyed. Due to its location it's slightly expensive, but you're getting quality too. They have regular ice cream, with multiple flavors. Yet my Achilles heel is their tasty soft serve. A fantastic treat. Dig the train out front, as trains are quite active on the nearby tracks. This has been around for some time. Yes it can get busy, but the employees are friendly and efficient. I think they deserve an extra kudos, and their organization system is an impressive one. If you're in the area please visit this ice cream shop. They are special to my whole family, and we will be back again! read more

OMG I am in love with this place! Peterson's was named best ice cream and I definitely agree! The hemlock overlook park is about 5 min away and this was a great spot to meet up after a long hike. Not only do they have ice cream, but they have food, milkshakes, and soft serve! My friends and i all got our respective ice creams (cotton candy, orange sherbet, cookies and cream, and pineapple sorbet! We all shared a plate of fries. The fries were AMAZING. it reminded me of boardwalk fries :') The outdoor seating is very cute and comfy, and had lot of seating for people. A pleasant surprise after spending the morning/afternoon at the winery. The there was a line and a little wait, but not more than 10 minutes. From ordering in the back to picking up in the front, it was a great experience to share especially on a nice day. The flavors were excellent and tasty! I know this is a local favorite and I've been wanting to try Peterson's for a while now. But wow, I spent $40 on ice cream for five people. I'm not sure it was worth it imo. The flavors they had on the day we went were not that appealing to me either. I would rather save my money and grab cheaper ice cream elsewhere. So update... I just reached out and suggested instead of giving us a free sundae they donate to a local family in their neighborhood who experienced an unimaginable tragedy last week. They did so and much more generously than the cost of a sundae. This is why I like to support small family businesses-- they take care of the community. If only ice cream could take away pain wouldn't the world be a better place?. Thank you Peterson's for doing the right thing by reaching out but even more for helping a family in need. Superb ice cream! We visited on Clifton Day and had a minimal wait. I sampled a banana Carmel flavor, but ultimately chose a sea salt caramel with chocolate/Graham cracker pieces. My stepdaughter had cookies n cream and loved it. One scoop is $6, 2 scoops $9. Service was fast and friendly. There are places to sit on both sides of the building. read more

Great spot! - by the time we got there they were out of fresh ingredients (making my craving for a banana split sad) no fresh banana or fresh strawberry. Make sure you get there early enough- I had shown up at 9pm and they close at 9:30. Keep in mind the kitchen closes before the restaurant so only ice cream available the last hour of business. The shake was ok- I ordered the key lime. No graham cracker crust pieces in the mix to add some texture just a thick smooth shake. Size is one size and it's fairly large I only ate half! Whip cream and cherry is complementary on any shake or sundae. My boyfriend loved his brownie sundae- I think the brownie was made in house! read more

Went to Peterson's for some ice cream on a summer night. This little shop is worth the trip. It's in an old part of town. When you arrive, finding the line to order can be confusing because it's in the back of the shop. You walk up to a window and place your order. It was cool to see a bunch of teenagers and family members working together. Everyone was really nice. I got a Chocolate Scoop on a Waffle Cone. It hit the spot! My wife got a Georgia Peach Shake. Peterson's is great! Have been here a few times for ice cream and have also enjoyed a hot dog platter (not the one we ordered, but it was still good!). Staff are very friendly, fast, and will call your name/bring things to you if they remember your face. The worst thing about this place is the patrons. Every time I have gone, people are coming and going with no masks on. Disappointed that they don't refuse service to those willing to jeopardize the health of others. read more

Peterson's is a staple in downtown Clifton. It is a great treat when the weather is warm. They currently have limited hours through the fall season. Parking is very limited, usually along the street, or across at the Villagio parking lot. You order from a window at the back, and pickup at the window at the front. Seating is very limited as well, with a few tables and chairs at the back, and bench seating at the front. Prices are high for ice cream, but you do get plenty of ice cream. Kid's portion is enough for me, and a regular would be plenty for sharing. read more

The BEST ice cream I've ever had! (Soft-serve or hard) The place is so cute to take your partner on a romantic date or take the kids and play the games in the back. There are restaurants in walking distance and a park right across the street. The owners are very friendly and make everyone feel incredibly welcome. You have to try this place!! CLIFTON, VA 04/21/19 DESSERT +The french fries are excellent! I definitely want to try additional seasoning; i.e., Peterson's (garlic) and other sauces. The boom boom sauce was pretty good and it had a. Ice kick to it. +The handmade ice cream was a delight! We got a scoop of vanilla for the little toddler and a scoop of banana with chocolate, on a sugar waffle bowl. +Plenty of seating under a tent/canopy set up in the back of the ice cream stand. +Cool, cozy hipster atmosphere. -No loyalty rewards program. -I didn't really see any restrooms. Overall, this place is a great dessert shop to visit while in the Clifton area. I would suggest going to brunch or eating at one of the restaurants nearby, before stopping by here to grab dessert. Discovered this ice cream depot on a whim as it's hidden down an alley. Well organized with menus and history of the depot as you wait before someone takes your order. You give your order to someone and wait for someone else to bring it out. Enjoyed the hard almond joy ice cream that's not as sweet filled with chocolate chips and nuts. Strawberry ice cream had a fresh tart taste. Definitely recommend this place if you are in the area. read more

Their portions can be huge so I suggest not going here on a full stomach. We arrived around 8:28 on a Tuesday night knowing they close at 9. We thought we had plenty of time and as always there's a lot of people there. When we wanted to place our order they said we can order ice cream but no shakes because they stop making them 30 minutes before? Okkk well glad I don't live far as I may go back to try their shakes. I'll just give myself two hours before closing time to be safe. I got the Barbs Brownie Sunday and it was big. The vanilla had a minty taste to it and the strawberry was not bad. The chocolate seemed standard and not something that made me say wow. Plenty of seating on the side and in the back BUT it can get really warm and you may end up with ice cream all over your hands. The back part should have more lighting as it can get really dark. Customer Service: pretty standard and they seemed like they really wanted to go home. I was hoping I could sample some ice creams but I didn't want to bother. Wish the cashiers had recommended something but as I said....they seemed like they wanted to close shop. I wasn't too impressed but I will visit in the summer, see how it goes and update my review read more

This ice cream shop is tucked away around the corner, but easy to find with the well placed signs! The ice cream was delicious and definitely worth the wait. We chose strawberry + chocolate drama and peanut butter. All of the flavors we would recommend. The seating area is also a decent size. My only negative comment is that the place to wait for ice cream/exit is placed a little awkwardly. We almost dropped our ice cream from a traffic jam in the area to exit/return to the seating area. read more

History

Established in 2007.

The Peterson family loves ice cream and one day stumbled upon the recipe for the finest ice cream they had ever tasted. They realized that there was good ice cream ( but not this good ) and thought it was a shame that the stores were always located in a strip mall where they had to eat in an asphalt parking lot. Tom and Jean, parents of our three first employees, longed for a place they could enjoy their ice cream in a pleasant atmosphere. Living in the beautiful historic town of Clifton and having the perfect spot on Main Street, they knew they had a formula for success and so it began... Ice Cream wasn't our only endeavor as we conceptualized about what we could do to offer our town fun, family dining with a "come as you are" feeling. A year after the Ice Cream Depot opened we added the "Dog Pound" serving the hot dogs, BBQ, and homemade fries but unfortunately due to inflation and the economy, food production has been temporarily suspended.

Meet the Business Owner: Tom and Jean P.

Both natives of Northern Virginia, Tom grew up in Springfield, attended Lee High School, taught school at Laurel Ridge Elementary and then Robinson High School where he also coached varsity baseball for 23 years and basketball for 18 years. He retired from teaching in 2008 but still enjoys substitute teaching. Jean grew up in Fairfax and attended Fairfax High School and has been a practicing dental hygienist for 23 years in North Arlington. We have been surrounded by kids professionally and personally and have found it rewarding and energizing. Knowing our talent and passion is working with children, we believe we've created a family-friendly business where kids rule.

The candies were so hard I hat to spit them out. The fudge was nasty so I raked it in a plastic bag I had in my car. The bananas were good, and the ice cream was o.k., but not banana split good.

I'm not sure if he was covering multiple sections, but we visited on a Friday morning when the restaurant appeared to be about 65-75% full, so it didn't seem overwhelmed. Chicken & Waffles - Overall, a tasty dish. The chicken was flavorful, and the waffle was well prepared. My main critique is the ratio. There was significantly more waffle than chicken--roughly a 5:8 ratio. Personally, I prefer a 1:1 chicken-to-waffle ratio so that every bite has the perfect balance. The wraps come with a side, so I went with the homemade coleslaw. My friend got the buffalo chicken wrap (made with chicken tenders) and that was also very good. Overall, great food and service. The only thing I didn't like was that there a ton of flies outside. I wish they had one of those UV light bug traps so clients could eat in peace.

The DB wasn't for me, not too much of a fan of citrus and coffee. The next few times we went, we've tried the Clouds in Sicily, Cream Cloud Coffee, Hojicha, Chrysanthemum, and the Matcha Limeade and they were all great. The staff here really put care in the drinks they make here. Definitely our new go to matcha and coffee spot. Hopefully they add more coffee drinks in the future but it's still great. Also need to try the soft serve as I've only heard good things.
