I was looking for a place to train after a LONG hiatus and a friend recommended The Jiu-Jitsu League. After a while I decided to contact them and see what they had to offer. I went in for a private lesson and I was INSTANTLY HOOKED. Kevin Howell is one of (if not the) best grappling instructors I've ever met. He was very thorough in his explanations of different techniques and very patient, as well. My first class was awesome and all the students (on every belt level) are really cool and helpful. Kevin, Haley and the other instructors work very hard at keeping a good atmosphere within the school, which make training not only easier but fun. trained here a couple years back and loved it but quit due to my work schedule. I got the itch to train again early this year but my schedule was still hectic. I looked around many other schools to see if I could fit something together but even though most offered convenient hours none of them came close to the experience you get at the jiujitsu league. Kevin is a great instructor and the quality of students there can't be matched (no A-holes). What a place this is. We went to Long Beach from the UK for the kids Pan Ams and all being from different gyms, we tried to find a place that was neutral. What we found was much more than we were hoping for. Kevin and Hayley opened their arms up to us, allowed the kids a little area of the mat to train all week, ithe coaches included them in the adults warm ups, invited them to the kids classes and even picked them out to flow roll with. Everyone and I mean everyone at the gym was so welcoming and there were no issues whatsoever about gym affiliations or politics. Highly recommend finding this place to go and train if you're in the Long Beach area, wonderful people and wonderful clean gym. I can honestly say training at J2L was one of the best choices I made in my martial arts life. There are two main aspects I want to highlight here: Instruction and Community. Kevin and Haley are a husband and wife team of instructors whose teachings have been featured in a number of martial arts publications. J2L is a part of the ATOS BJJ network, and you'll see Prof. Galvao come by every so often. While other school's I've attended will have a technique of the day, the instruction of J2L is a week-long program. Each day will have a progression showing different aspects or approaches resulting in a broader understanding of the technique. I really appreciated that approach. The other aspect of J2L is the community they've built up. It feels like family when you're training there. The atmosphere is very welcoming and Kevin and Haley will work to make you part of the family. Other schools I might make a couple friends here or there, but J2L I felt like I knew almost everyone. Even after I took a hiatus for school, when I came back I got to meet so many more people and be welcomed back. I'm going to miss this school now that I've moved out of Long Beach. Well what can I say, For a while my brother Ziggy was asking me to come check out the the league. I would always tell him one day but that one day never came. Best jiu jitsu training in Long Beach! I always come visit whenever I'm in town. They are very welcoming and the training is awesome.

My husband and I wanted to start Jiu Jitsu just over a year ago. We both wanted to learn self defense and get a good workout. We had a groupon for the Gracie academy in Torrance and although the people there were extremely pleasant, it was both very expensive and as there was no sparring we never got a workout. In three weeks there we didn't break a sweat once. We tried another gym closer to us (Gracie Barra) and although it was more active they had very few classes and very little mat space. My husband found The Jiu Jitsu League online and we came in for a free class. Haley and Kevin were extremely welcoming and we knew right away this was the gym for us. We signed up on the spot. Fast forward 9 months, my husband lost close to 20lbs, we have friendships for life, and we are both about to compete for the first time... which is something we never dreamed of doing! The gym has a wonderful nucleus of people and a warming family feel. They have many classes offered on different days and times which is great for anyone's work schedule. We love it here. I plan to start posting about my journey and this is the first post but I saw it fit to go on here as it shows just how awesome Kevin and Haley are and how awesome this school is. My journey as a white belt began in 2012 and due to a small number of injuries and the Army I was forced to take some time off. About six weeks ago I joined the ranks of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner once again. As I walked into The Jiu Jitsu League (J2L) I was greeted by Hailey, the head instructors wife and essential book keeper for J2L. She gave me the paper work and rushed out to rejoin the class for the drill. I looked around and took in the essence of what I could see was a really good school. I walked back into the locker room and changed into a gi that I had from when I trained previously. As I walked out of the locker room and moved the few short paces to the mat the fear that I once had about stepping on to the mat rushed me. As I looked into the J2L and saw the people I would soon call my BJJ family doing a drill that looked like it was a real smoker. I would soon learn that they had done 500 arm bars each and it was called drill to win. I was invited in as if I was there the whole time to introduce myself. I coined the statement "Hey I am Shaun and that looked like it sucked". The academy laughed it off only to make me feel more accepted. As soon as that class ended I began rolling with Professor Kevin Howell, the main instructor at the J2L. While Professor Howell and I rolled he assessed where I would do well training and easily could see that I was ready for the advanced class because of my previous knowledge. I could tell that he had no ego just a love for instructing the sport that I had grown to love. Over the next few weeks I would see that Professor Howell is comparable to the Greg Jackson of Jiu Jitsu as he does not compete but he trains some serious killers in the art. He assessed some of my strengths and weaknesses and soon after set me up to roll with some of the other guys that were still there. I was pummeled! They destroyed me with technique and experience, all without so much as breaking a sweat. I had been twisted into a pretzel and choked more times in 5 min than ever before, and I was hooked. Call me a glutton for punishment but I couldn't get enough. It wasn't about the will to win, but with every match I learned something new. Kevin wanted to see if I had entered with the nasty and uncalled for EGO that most people come in with and slowly learned that my will to learn was bigger than ego. At the end of the beating I walked back into the locker room with a smile from ear to ear. I was exhausted but excited that I had rekindled my passion for the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As I walked out to the small lobby I was met with the expectations of Kevin in the time to come if I chose to train at J2L. He said "We will work on your guard game as well as knowing when to let go of the guillotine that clearly wasn't working". I asked about competition and Kevin said he doesn't compete but will make sure that I am more than ready for a competition if I sign up". I quickly replied "With where do I sign" and my journey as a white belt had begun all over again. read more

I have been "shopping" around recently for a high caliber training facility for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg and I found it! I've trained at A LOT of schools in the Orange County area before coming here and I have noticed that with most of the academy's out here they usually offer some combination of sub-par instructors, insane fees, and downright shady belt promotions that really make you question their integrity and also make you realize that it's more of a business to them and less about the development of their students. At Fight Zone USA I have found that not only are the owners (Kevin and Haley Howell) some of the nicest people you will ever meet, but you can tell that they truly love what they do and that they are committed in supplying their students with the best possible learning experience possible without charging you with outrageous fees. This type of atmosphere makes the whole school feel more like an extended family than some corporate establishment operating solely on a name. Now the Instructors. Not to be outdone by the other McDojo's out there. Fight Zone USA has stocked itself with some amazing instructors. Leandro Viera of the famed Viera Bros. (Little brother to Leo and Ricardo) is the head instructor here and after first meeting him you instantly feel like you've known him for a long time. Leandro is a black belt and the ability to train with someone at his level is a tremendous advantage. His classes go over a "theme" that is posted on a white board in the lobby. For example: One week might be about side control or a certain guard style. During this week he will go over multiple transitions and submissions as well as proper defense techniques. The well planned out structure for each class is one of the main reasons I choose this school. The owner Kevin Howell (brown belt) is also an instructor as well. He will assist Leandro in all of his classes, but more importantly teaches a Fundamentals class on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5-6pm. These classes are an amazing asset to a white belt like myself who needs to fine tune certain holes in my game. Another big selling point was their quickly expanding Kids classes, which are held on Tuesday's and Friday's from 5-6pm. I have an 8 year old nephew who absolutely loves it here! This place in an absolute must if you're looking for an extra-curricular activity for your kid to join that doesn't cost a small fortune. As far as the amenities go Fight Zone USA is set up extremely well. Walking in they have very bright and welcoming reception area where someone is usually there to greet you. Then you enter a small lobby area where you can put your shoes (no shoes allowed on the mats) and find out what is going to be taught for the week. This is also where the bathroom and Men's changing room is located (the Woman's changing room is located adjacent to the main training area). From here you enter the main training area, which is massive! This helps with accommodating a good amount of students. There is also an upstairs mezzanine where you can lounge out and watch any of the classes. A perfect spot for parents! My overall review of this place is extremely high and I would recommend it to anyone it the Orange County area looking for a very organized and friendly atmosphere to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from such a professional and amazingly talented staff for themselves or their kids. read more
