JJ Delicatessen has an excellent assortment of meats, cheeses and dried goods, many from European countries like Germany and Poland. My girlfriend and I ordered sandwiches on a Saturday morning. We had to wait a little over twenty minutes, and the woman advised that next time we call our orders in ahead of time because the hot sandwiches take awhile. So that's your tip for the day. But they were worth waiting for. Fairly priced, excellent quality, and came with a few sides. I got the Polish sandwich special and my girlfriend got the Mediterranean sandwich special. There is a small seating area in the deli, but we took them with us and ate them in the car. It was a great lunch that we ate right before an afternoon of hiking at High Point State Park in NJ. I really wish I could rate this place higher than this, but all that comes to mind when I think of this place is 'salty.' It seems like this is something of an institution and even for first-timers like us, it's not hard to see why. It's a European-leaning local deli that is clean, well stocked with interesting goodies, and that's is a cozy dining room in the front end of the shop. The two ladies we interacted with were fairly friendly and helpful, and after an agonising few minutes looking at the menu, we decided on the Polish and Italian sandwiches (vs heroes, which are bigger, cost a bit more, and are served on a roll). What I liked was the fresh tasting pickle that comes with the sandwich. In fact, the pickle may have been my favourite thing, period. The macaroni salad and potato salad were enjoyable if not particularly memorable. Now, the sandwiches. They look great, delicious even. We could tell they were made with care. From the first bite though, so I could think was, why's this SO salty? To this day, we're not sure what the culprit(s) were. Without the saltiness, I think they could have been delicious sandwiches. Perhaps this is how the locals like it. Maybe this is some sort of traditional way to prepare these sandwiches. All I know is that it traumatised my taste buds so much that I didn't have an appetite for another meal for the rest of the day. And of course I was quite thirsty for a few hours afterwards. This is a very busy little deli, so plan ahead. You may want to call in your order. Because there were several people ahead of me, I perused the store's merch while I awaited my sandwich, and lo and behold, I discovered a stash of one of my favorite candies (Kinder Katzen) from Germany (which I can no longer find in metropolitan San Diego, but in tiny Pt Jervis, it exists!). I bought most of the packages. This deli stocks many German products, and I bet they could order something from Germany for you. My yummy sandwich came with a cookie, one mouthful of salad in a tiny container, and a pickle, and a frequent shopper punch card. A good value, imho, and from one of the more interesting places in Pt Jervis. Friendly, but harried, staff. Limited indoor seating, this is mostly a take-out place. read more

This is my new favorite deli. I used to live in New York City waaaay back in the day, and this reminds me of how great the delis were then. Best Italian sub outside of Manhattan, fantastic selection of European deli foods and treats (Babka, bakery goods etc..), great deli meat selections, and somehow they have reasonable prices. We have recently ordered Italian hero sandwiches at an Italian place in Slate Hill, NY and one in Jeffersonville, NY. They were both $14 each and were satisfactory. Today we ordered one from JJ Deli and it was spectacular. It was $13.25 and came with a tiny salad, a yummy pickle, a cookie and a peppermint. This place makes me soooo happy!! I love finding a good deli that can accommodate gluten free requests. I was able to get a HUGE deli sandwich that came with chips, salad and a pickle. It was such a great deal and it was so delicious. This made me happy because I can't really get deli sandwiches often due to my need for gluten free bread. There are so many options on the menu and my sandwich was stacked high! I was so full after eating my sandwich and it really hit the spot. I was tired of sandwiches on the road at this point but JJ was still great! It's a good portion of meat in their sandwiches. I got the italian which was delicious! It can be a bit of wait, but it is worth it. You can also get deli to go, which I really wanted to if I wasn't going to be on the road for hours after. Stopped by here on a road trip to the south and was really impressed with the sandwiches, the Viking sandwich and the polish kielbasa. Left a great impression. So, On our way back home, we decided to stop by again to get more kielbasa, polish ham sandwiches and European cookies and other groceries. All I have to say is, I will drive 75 miles to this place. The sandwiches are amazing and huge with a lot of meat. The polish kielbasa is the best one you'll ever have. And the stuffed cabbage- was out of this world!!! You know how when you're traveling and step into an unfamiliar, small, local eatery and anticipate that you will be treated like an unwelcomed tourist? JJ's is NOT that place. After stopping at JJ's in the middle of a 9-hour drive because it was the only 5-star place in the surrounding area, we quickly realized why it was 5-star. As we stood to read the menu posted on the board, Josh welcomed us and handed us a menu for an easier read. When I asked if I could order a turkey sandwich with particular additions, he smiled and said, "you can do whatever you want... it's a free country." He put us at ease and made sandwiches for our party of 4. Their "Italian" sub sandwich is one of the best sandwiches we had ever had. Unfamiliar with the salads that come with the sandwiches, Josh gave us a variety of them all to try. The cost of everything was amazing - especially when you factor in the size of the gigantic sandwiches (the subs were like footballs) and the amount of deli meat that was piled on. We spent a total of $50 and received 4 humongous sandwiches, 4 salads, 4 bags of chips, 2 sodas, and 4 candy bars. Seriously, you can't beat the price! We took our sandwiches back to our hotel and they were delicious - easily one of the better meals we had on our long trip. The sandwiches were so good, that we decided to go back the next morning and pick up more sandwiches for the road trip back home. When we walked through the door, Josh smiled and said, "you're back!," which made us feel so welcomed. Josh makes the best sandwiches and was so kind to us out-of-towners. The food was excellent, the general ambience was very Old World in the most positive sense of the word. The ordering process was very difficult to understand, and the manager was peremptory, bordering on rudeness. Wifi is advertised in the menu. When asked about the WiFi password, the manager first said, "I am helping others." And then when we mentioned that he could just post the password he said, "I can't do that! Everyone around here would be using it." Not terribly welcoming, although the young man who actually took our order and made our food was perfectly polite and accommodating. If I lived in Port Jervis, I would return to this delicatessen, but we had driven out of our way because of the reviews, and I would not make that trip again. read more

Ordered a variety of subs over the phone for 8 people in advance. Everything was very good and you could tell was a quality deli. Everyone was very happy with their sandwiches. It was quite busy when I picked up the food so glad they told us it would be 45 minutes but when I showed up everything was ready and was quickly servied. Only suggestion, avoid the italian or ask that it not include Mustard. Not sure why spicy mustard would go on an italian sub but I guess that's my fault for ordering an italian sub at a polish deli. read more

Delicious... my first time to this polish deli and I am absolutely returning. The food is out of this world. I order an Italian sandwich and two spicy tv sticks which are basically homemade slim Jim's but so much better. The sandwich was fresh, loaded with ten different meats and cheeses.
