It's always comforting to find familiar places to eat when out on the road. This particular Black Bear diner is in the town Porterville off Route 65. You can't miss the building, with its whimsical signature black bear statues. I stopped on in for lunch. The customer service was terrific and the food was good, just like the typical Black Bear way. The main dining area had booth seating with some counter seating. I suppose there was table seating but I didn't see any in the main area. I ordered the customized breakfast of a waffle, bacon, and scrambled eggs. The waffle smelled like vanilla. It's a biggum... pretty large size. It has the signature bear claw waffle print which I adore. It could have been a bit crispier still delicious though. The syrup is maple syrup, so no High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). The waffle mix also doesn't contain HFCS. Even the ketchup they serve is free of HFCS. So appreciate that. The bacon was thick cut and cooked perfectly, the two entire pieces were cooked evenly to a perfect crispy doneness. Not an easy feat. Our waitress was great. Big smile and welcoming attitude. We were able to get multiple checks for our table. When it came time to pay the bill with the cashier, there was a long line. Not surprising considering it was the lunch rush. Well, that's what we did...located just off the 5 freeway heading towards the Sequoias...we all got a little peckish. A friend of mine that lives in another state wanted to surprise me with dinner one evening however because of a mistake on DoorDash my dinner was scheduled for delivery 7 AM so I'm going to say here that my rating may have been different had I been able to eat this when it was hot and fresh. I did end up putting it in the refrigerator and having it the next evening. The order consisted of Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken, side salad,coffee, and apple cobbler. The restaurant did not have cobbler but the delivery driver called and I was able to substitute banana cream pie without an extra charge. The coffee was fine it was hot and fresh. I did take one taste of the fettuccine when it arrived because I knew it was going in the refrigerator it had a good creamy taste and there was a lot of it. It came with garlic bread as well which is always good. My friend said she was unable to order the food without adding chicken and a drink which I don't think is true I think that was a problem on the DoorDash app or just her inexperience at ordering so it came with added chicken. When I was able to heat the food up the next night for dinner I found that it was a giant serving so ended up having some for dinner and some for lunch. Even though it had sat overnight the sauce was still creamy and was good. The flavor was a little mild not sure what I was expecting maybe just a touch more salt or garlic??? Garlic bread as expected was delicious. The salad was very fresh and I enjoyed it. You can't have anything negative to say about their pies. These pies are "individual" pies however they are large enough to serve two people easily and actually lasted several days. I really think that if I had eaten this or received this at dinner time I would have enjoyed it more. If someone were to ask if I would re-order this I would say most likely so in my book that is a win. I think I would've preferred it without the chicken and again eaten hot and fresh. The Black Bear Diner is an institution in parts of California. Nothing fancy here -- generally tasty enough, with no frills. Huge menu. Very friendly service. Prices are reasonable for what's delivered; again, there's nothing fancy about the place, nor is it intended to be fancy. Still, very clean, pleasant overall. I visited for lunch and chose the tri-tip dip, their take on a French dip sandwich. I added cheese and onions, at the suggestion of the pleasant waitress, with a green salad as my side. The servings were generous. Salad greens were fresh, everything good there. The sandwich came out soon thereafter, and it was certainly large enough. There was plenty of appropriate flavor, with or without the jus. It was generally as expected. I would note that the beef was not of particularly high quality. It was a little tough to bite through sometimes a lot of the membranes and such were still in there. I didn't expect thinly sliced beef tenderloin, but I was a bit disappointed in the quality of that meat. Still, I didn't leave anything behind. Dessert seems a little bit limited. Fruit pies are not an option (at least much of the time). Icebox pies are always around, but I am not fond of icebox pies in general. So I won't comment one way or the other on "afters." It would take a long time to try everything on the menu - you could be at it for months. While certainly not the place for a highbrow lunch, Black Bear provides consistent service and quality, and that's important to many people. read more

Black bear Diner is nicely tucked in the city of Porterville. I had to the chance to try this place out for breakfast while visiting some friends in Porterville. I came in around 1030am on a Sunday and it was BUSY! There are two dining areas, one of the left and one on the right. The middle section were the restrooms. The setting of the restaurant definitely gave it the a cabin feel. The staff was attentive and took our orders right away. The food portions here are gigantic! I ordered a chicken fried steak and it came with eggs, hash browns, and a choice of pancakes. It was enough food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Make sure you come hungry! read more

My husband and I ate breakfast here 5 days in a row and dinner 3 days in a row while visiting Death Valley. The staff was super nice and friendly. The food was good and VERY plentiful. The desserts are home made and delicious. I had the cinnamon bun French toast and loved it. My husband had various breakfasts and enjoyed every one of them. All of the servers were very pleasant and one in particular (Candy) even gave me a hug when I said we were leaving in the morning. You won't leave there hungry! As great as it is to have breakfast at a local diner like Black Bear Diner located just about anywhere. I would not recommend going here because of the quality of the food served. My order was a simple breakfast considered with eggs, bacon, sausage links, and pancakes, besides my pancakes being completely soggy like they had been sitting out my bacon and everything else were burnt. I went to this diner thinking of having a nice breakfast with my family but had to imminently leave after returning my plate. Making things worse as I was leaving I turned to notice the roaches crawling over the light chandeliers over the booth my family and I had been sitting at. Although the service at the diner is super attentive I can understand it's not their fault for the cockroach problem the diner itself has. Recently left my review and it was removed because a moderator said it didn't look like I ate there. So let me say again to give yall fair warning. I just had the worst "French dip" (tri tip sandwich). First of all it was a pick up order and when the food got to my work I realized they didn't give me any French dip sauce. HUGE FAIL. That's pretty much the whole point of French dip is to dip your sandwich. One pathetic looking side of the sandwich had about two pieces of meat. Tasteless with no seasoning. I bet they figure they don't have to season it and the French dipping sauce would cover the taste of the meat. The other side had about 6 piece of meat, sandwich barely even folded. This place is usually good and the more I think about it I usually only eat breakfast here. I will stick to eating breakfast here because this lunch meal was the worst. Whoever made this sandwich should be ashamed of themselves and take more pride in their work and pay more attention. This was a complete waste of twenty bucks. I will never eat a lunch or dinner here again. Maybe not even eat breakfast, I means it's not amazing or anything just good. Mediocre. Midgrade.
