This was my second time ordering here the first time I did not have a good experience as the food was extremely salty so I was a little hesitant to order again but I really wanted a something that wasn't the typical burger or tacos. I ordered the half chicken meal and chose beans and potato salad as my sides and added an extra chicken and dumplings just because I love them. The food was ordered through DoorDash and was delivered on time. And I have to say that I was very pleased the food was delicious! The chicken was fall off the bone tender and was well seasoned. The beans are very good as well as the chicken and dumplings. The potato salad is good maybe not as good as my mom's but that would be really hard to be. I ate part of the chicken and the chicken and dumplings tonight and will have the rest for another meal. It also came with a large piece of bread and that was nice as well. I heard about some good barbecue at Anvil BBQ in Porterville, so we took a ride over to check it out. I didn't find any problems that some of the ratings show. Overall , the food we tried was good. The tri tip, while often dry in bbq joints, was quite good - moist and tender. The ribs were delicious. A bit under cooked for my liking, as I would have preferred a bit more fat being rendered. The brisket was dry and I was told that the overnight pit worker got the temp up a bit high. But, it worked well on the small sandwich I ordered with some of their spicy bbq sauce added (something I normally never do) because it was a good sauce. Potato salad was the only side we tried and it was very good. The condiment table was the most complete I have experienced. Just about anything you might want with barbecue. I don't care much for BBQ sauce but the Anvil sauces were good, one very sweet and one sweet and spicy. The service was friendly, fast and very helpful. Vanessa is a boon to the business. The decor gets an "A+" and helps create the "Barbecue Funky" style that I like so much. We'll be back and hope to see you there. read more

It's a 10 out of 10 for me. I went in on my lunch break and got the pulled pork sandwich combo. The bread was soft on the outside and slightly toasted on the inside. It was perfect. The pulled pork had a nice Smokey taste and was tender and flavorful. (I added the spicy and original bbq sauce to the sandwich) both sauces were perfect. This is a nice little gem in Porterville. The food is always delicious if you're a fan of barbecue I haven't ever ordered anything except the Hobo Sandwich, which is tri tip shredded with grilled onions on a crispy, french hoagie roll, smothered in your choice if barbecue sauce (sweet or spicy). I always opt for spicy. It's about 15 dollars per person and well worth it, as the food is extremely filling. There is also a little side bar with condiments of your choosing, including extra BBQ sauces, peppercloncinis, jalapeños, salsa, etc. I recommend grabbing plenty of napkins, something to drink from either the fountain drinks or the fridge and sitting at one of the picnic tables outside. read more

Was driving back from the sequoias and found this great gem. We didn't want to stop for fast food, or go out of our route back, so we waited to reach Porterville and stumbled upon this amazing bbq place. We had a tri tip sandwich, ribs, sweet beans and potato salad and everything was absolutely delicious. There were no leftovers. The staff was friendly. Interior decorations were adorable. I got the southwest salad with brisket. I personally prefer shredded lettuce when it comes to certain salads because it makes it easier to eat. I got the brisket as per the staffs suggestion. DELICIOUS. Seriously top 3 best brisket I've ever had ( and I lived in Texas for 6 years). The dressing was SO a good! The pasta salad was good but definitely needed more sauce. I have had the tri-tip sandwiches, the chicken sandwiches, their cole slaw, and Chicken Dumpling soup ( TO DIE FOR!!). I had the (3) pork rib dinner with Spicy chili beans and the pasta salad. The ribs were seasoned perfect and the meat came off the bone, so delicious!! The spicy chili beans were good. They had chili's mixed and made the chili pop!! The pasta salad was glorious, with chucks of pepperoni and tomatoes, it was awesome. A bread roll came with it, and DANG!!! So good. I recommend this BBQ place you will not be disappointed. I was excited to have bbq today however I was very disappointed. I spent $27 on this plate. None of the bbq is fresh, looks to be cooked and reheated from previous day. Start off with the brisket: no smoke or bbq flavor, it was chopped up on small pieces, not exactly how brisket should be. I got 4 oz, not even sure if it was even 4 oz. Now to the tri trip, no flavor very bland, very minor smoked ring, fully cooked all the way through, cut into tiny pieces with some small slices. Not happy with that. The Chile beans was decent, the potatoes salad has no flavor very bland. As a bbq enthusiast, I would never recommend this place. read more

If you're a resident of the small city of Porterville, CA, and you're in the mood for some authentic, Texas-style barbecue, you don't need to travel all the way to Texas, as you're blessed with Anvil BBQ, which serves delicious barbecue, smoked, Texas-style. The wood-fired smoker is just outside the restaurant, and takes up a couple of very worthwhile spaces in the parking lot. Next to the smoker is lots of oak, which grows native in the Porterville area, and makes for great smoking wood. Oak is very similar to hickory, and totally interchangeable. At my home in Roseville, CA, I smoke with oak, as it's native, and all I have to do is to gather dead branches, take them home, and cut them to size with my chain saw. Anvil Barbecue smokes the meat, Texas style, over wood, for REAL barbecue. The dining room is long and narrow, and furnished with picnic tables, just the way a barbecue restaurant should be. The restaurant works on what I call the "taqueria format," in that you walk up to the, make your selection from the menu, pay for your order, and when your order is ready, it will be brought to you. Barbecue is an informal food, and I prefer to enjoy barbecue in an informal dining room, such as Anvil BBQ. As much as I enjoy a full-service restaurant, I don't think "full service" applies when it comes to barbecue. Anvil's dining room would make a Texas barbecue joint proud... Anvil BBQ's menu is very simple, to the point, and pure barbecue. The menu is posted above the counter, on an "old school" blackboard, and I didn't see any printed menus during my visit. From the "Sandwiches" section of the menu, I ordered a "Large Pulled Pork," and I added two optional sides; "BBQ Baked Beans" and "Potato Salad." The large sandwich features a generous helping of delicious, juicy, tender, smoky pulled pork, cooked to perfection in the outdoor smoker. Yes, it's Texas-style, but if you're a fan of Carolina-style barbecue, where pulled pork is king, you'd love this pork, as it's SO GOOD! The pork was served on a toasted garlic roll, which made for an outstanding sandwich. I added a little of the spicy in-house made barbecue sauce on my sandwich, and after taking my first bite, I was transported to "barbecue nirvana." Great barbecue! The side of potato salad was delicious, and is some of the best potato salad that I've enjoyed in a long time, but the beans were the real winner! I'm a fan of beans of any variety, especially baked beans. These beans aren't your mama's baked beans, as they're not baked in a casserole, as they have lots of bean juice, with chunks of barbecue been in them. The beans were juicy, flavorful and tender, and I absolutely loved them! If you're a lover of beans, like I am, do yourself a favor and order a side of beans. From Las Vegas for a few days while our son play baseball against the college here. We saw this BBQ place last year, went there and they were closed because of a family emergency. This year we finally had a chance to make it there, and so glad that we did. You are first welcomed with the BBQ pit in the Parking lot, on the door you read "11am-7pm or until we sell out" just from m that you know for sure it's made fresh daily. The menu was simple.
