Place has gone EXTREMELY down hill since covid+ their top nail tech left. Nails are not shaped properly or well, and glue must be low quality cause these lift faster than any other place I've seen. The nails are so brittle the tips snap off even with being careful and then they act like it's your fault they broke off doing something as menial as driving. The quality does not match the exuberant price point. Better off spending the same price ($80+) for better nails elsewhere. read more

My sister discovered JJ Union Nails on Yelp and I'm so glad she did! I've had my nails done by Hong and another nail technician and they always do a great job! I was late on both occasions due to traffic and they never made me feel rushed! Since its downtown they have normal office hours which are great for people who work downtown. They do have an online appointment system which is always convenient and they are on 5 stars so you often get discounts sent to you! The young guy even made a color to match my nails since they didn't have one, and the nail tech was so sweet and thorough! I'd certainly come back! Best nail salon I've ever been to!!!! I called the same day and got in right when I needed to. The place is kind of hidden and I couldn't find it but I called and was met outside. I got a pedicure and a full set with gel polish. I have never left after a pedicure and had my feet feel as soft as baby's feet! My feet are soft and my nails are perfect! The art was done just as I asked. Very friendly people working there, they all made me feel like I've been going there for years. I'm brand new to Honolulu, and the ladies in my downtown condo building unanimously said JJ Union Nails is the place for manicures and pedicures! This modest establishment, hidden down the hallway of the Union Plaza building, did not disappoint -- especially because of nail tech Vic! Vic did my fingers at my very first appointment and has ever since. I've enjoyed the services of many technically good manicurists over my four-plus decades of manis and pedis, and what sets Vic apart is his bubbling friendliness. It's hard for me to sit still for two hours, but Vic's light banter keeps me entertained and the time flies by. At the end, I have gorgeous looking nails, perfectly filed into the shape I like and a gel polish that lasts me two solid weeks. Vic also gives my toes extra attention; I can't believe how "clean" and perfectly shaped they now look. It's been years since I've gotten a manicure, and I didn't get the memo that it's difficult to find places that take walk-ins, even during non-peak times! I wanted to get my nails done for a friend's wedding, and after frantically looking for places on Yelp within the Kakaako and Downtown Honolulu area, making some calls, and walking to a couple places only to be turned away, I finally landed on JJ Union Nails. It would be my last stop before really giving up. The location of JJ Union Nails is tucked away in the first floor of the Union Plaza building. There's a security guard up front if you need help, but the entrance is just past them on the left. I walked here, but there a many affordable municipal lots in the area that are available to park in. When I arrived I was greeted and when I asked if they would take a walk-in, Jenny quickly came to the front to check the schedule. Luckily, because I was only looking to get a gel manicure done, she was able to squeeze me in. She even called a client to ask if they could push their appointment about 15 minutes so she could fit me in. Thankfully, that worked out better for her other client and I was able to get seated. At this point, I was only thinking that I needed a manicure and did not pay much attention to pricing. Jenny was very friendly, personable, and you could tell that she's been in this business for a long time. After picking a gel color, she offered some recommendations, which I think helped the final look. Although I didn't get what I assume is the normal hand massage, etc., due to the time constraint, I still left very happy with the outcome of my manicure. I did notice some wear after a few days but it has remained in great shape so far! I would like to come back to remove the color properly, as Jenny mentioned that ripping off nail polish damages the natural nail. The only downside from my experience here was the price, which was about $42, for a gel nail manicure. But honestly, when I walked in, I was prepared to pay since I don't regularly do this and the wedding was that upcoming weekend. Despite the price, I am very appreciative that Jenny was able to fit me into the schedule without compromising the quality of her services. I'll likely return to remove the polish and come back if another occasion comes along where I'd want to treat myself. :) read more

Not only did my nails turn out perfect but the service from Jenny and Hong was above and beyond exceptional! ANOTHER UPDATE: Last week, I went in without an appointment to fix some lifting nails and was accommodated with no wait time. I opted for a very simple design and jenny again created an amazing and unique design for me. Unfortunately on Friday while I was out, i broke one of my extensions. This was definitely not a result of poor work, I'm just really clumsy. Today, I unexpectedly had free time late in the day and called to see if they were available. Although they were fully booked til closing, jenny was able to squeeze me in between appointments to replace my broken extension. UPDATE: I just finished my second manicure from this salon, and I am so so happy with JJ Union Salon. First, when I called yesterday to make my appointment, hong remembered my name, which surprised me since I had only been there once before. Second, I arrived ten minutes before they were supposed to open and expected to just wait outside for a bit, but jenny unlocked the door for me and remembered me from last time too! I showed jenny several pictures of nail designs I was considering and she helped me think of something similar and completely unique I am very happy with my experience and will be returning and recommending JJ Union to everyone I know! After my old nail artist retired, I had a very difficult time finding a new salon to go to. After my first visit this week, I think I will be coming back to JJ for a long time. I got a gel manicure and brought in a picture of a design that I wanted. At first the girl was hesitant (I think she wasn't sure how to do the design at first) and kept asking jenny for help, which made it a little awkward since jenny was with another client. After reading these Yelp reviews, I had to check this place out, and it didn't disappoint! I walked in right as they opened for a mani/pedi, and I was really bummed to hear that they had some appointments coming in. I wasn't going to be able to return later in the day, but then they asked, "How about express service?" Sounded great to me! And, no joke, 30 minutes later I walked out with fantastic nails. Helen and Jenny both helped out (Helen did my toes while Jenny did gel polish on my fingers), and despite it being express, I still got a nice foot soak, cuticle care, and shaping. They have an impressive range of gel polishes, and I really appreciated that their polishes are arranged chromatically as opposed to the hodgepodge you see at lots of salons. Everyone was super nice to me: they offered tea or water when I sat down, they made sure I was comfortable, and they were friendly without prying. Great experience at JJ Union Nails last week. My friend and I decided to check them out after hearing good things from another friend. Located downtown, about a 1/2 block from Bishop Square makes for the perfect location if you work downtown. The location is a bit hidden inside an office type building but there is a small sign with balloons outside to help direct you. It was very clean and quiet. The brother and sister team did a great job with our manicures and pedicures, even offering the express pedicure because we were pressed for time. Very pleased with how our nails turned out. They offer a stamp card which will help you earn $20 towards services! Pretty generous! As first time clients, we were also offered either a free small gift bag or free design on our nails, we both opted for some small crystals on our gel manicures. Two of my girlfriends and I came here to get manicures and pedicures after seeing good yelp reviews, and the reviews did not lie! :) We also chose this place because they had enough pedicure chairs that we could all 3 get our pedicures together. We made appointments for 3 mani/pedis together at 430pm on a Friday and they were ready to take us as soon as we got there. The place is very nice and clean and nicely decorated. They had a large collection of colors of both regular polish & gel. The pedicure chairs were awesome: they were brand new massage chairs and all three of use agreed we were sort of disappointed when we had to get OUT of them at the end of our pedicures! ;) I had Jenny and she did an incredible job. She is clearly very passionate about quality and customer satisfaction and this definitely came through. She cared about the quality all of her staff were delivering as well, not just her own. For my manicure I got gel polish and a fade, and Jenny did a wonderful job. (see picture) Jenny also very kindly included a complimentary paraffin wax because it was my birthday :) & also because a previous allergic reaction on my hands had left them pretty badly beat up. Overall, all three of us were very happy with the overall service, and all agreed that 1) the customer service was great and 2) it was the best all around experience at a nail salon that any of us had had in a long time. My friend and I like to get pedicures together. We used to go to a nail salon in Pearl City as our favorite one near Ala Moana started to get difficult in scheduling appointments. However, now that I moved closer to town, we decided to try to find one near/in downtown so we could go together after work. As she parks in my building, we figured we would try this place out. It's definitely 5 stars convenience factor because like I said, we're already in downtown and we don't need to worry about parking. This place does NOT validate, FYI. So unless you're in downtown, that may be pretty steep. I heard one of the workers mention going to Walmart to spend $10 to get validation but hey, whatever floats your boat. If you're going to Wally World anyway, then it may work out for you. Anyway, let's get down to the pedicures. They're reasonably priced for being in downtown. I usually get the classic pedicure at $35. I've had varying experiences on this part. For the most part, they're good. Jenny does a great job in massaging, preparing your toes, and painting. However, I'd had other not so good experiences with others. Once I had a man do my nails and mind you, my friend is getting the same classic pedicure that I'm getting and we're both having very drastically different experiences. She's getting her legs massaged BEFORE her person paints her nails. The man that I had painted my nails and then massaged my legs... which is SO strange considering then your nails may get damaged in the process as mine did. I asked the man about a bubble on my nails and the response was it was my nail not him. However, considering it hasn't happened before or after, I think it was him. But oh well, just blame the customer. Also, he was not the best at cutting or shaping my nails. Oh well, just won't go to him again. That's the beauty of JJ Nails... for the most part, you can schedule your appointment online with the person you want to have service you.
