A few weeks ago, I had the honor of having my hair done here. I had called ahead of time because I had never been before. The salon had great reviews and was recommended for women with thinning hair. I was given an appointment with Jennifer, the owner. My shoulder length, fine , curly hair was an embarrassment to me. It was thin, shapeless and stressed me out. And furthermore, I had a bald spot, that added to my anxiety . I admit that I was nervous and self-conscious, but the minute I got there, I relaxed. Jennifer consulted with me first and then got to work. She recommended the best color for me. Although my natural color is very dark brown, it is a bit harsh now that I am 66. Jennifer chose a shade lighter and gave me a cute short cut. She added some highlights, so that my grays would blend well. We both felt that it was best to let my naturally curly hair, do it's thing. I came out of there feeling and looking great. I've received SO MANY compliments. I had been hiding my hair under a wig . No more. Thank you so much. I was not only impressed with my haircut and the service. Jennifer was a true professional. She made sure that her assistants and stylists were on their toes. She didn't miss a beat. Marcos did a great haircut with some bounce and a face-flattering shape. It was highly unusual for me to be a walk-in at an unfamiliar salon. More unusual was taking my senior dog with me! She had just had laser therapy at her vet a half-block away. Marcos greeted me promptly, said salon was dog-friendly and gave me confidence in getting a good cut. Several months ago, I booked an appointment with Sonata to get a Brazilian blowout. I was running a late and called the salon to tell them only to end up actually getting to my appointment on time. By the time I sat in the chair, I was placed with a completely different stylist than the one I booked with, and well, Sonata was actually at the salon. She didn't even bother to tell me why she put me with someone else when I specifically booked her. Whoever ended up doing my Brazilian completely put too many chemicals in my hair because in the weeks after my scalp was peeling. I'm now about 3 to 4 months out of the Brazilian and I can still feel my hairpart. It was a completely unprofessional experience, and it was really frustrating to have booked with one person who in the end did not do my hair but the person who did used way too much chemicals. read more

Pros: Great cut by Jennifer. She's professional and no-nonsense and offered helpful suggestions without overselling. I will go back. Cons: Scheduling problem with my initial appointment. That said, Jennifer did step in, and she handled it very well. I made an appointment with Sonata on a Sunday, based on the salon's website -- like most salons there are bios for all the stylists, and you can choose a specific stylist and time. Arrived on time to find she was busy with someone else and they just assigned me to a different stylist. I was very surprised; they were nice about it but said their system didn't show that I actually wanted Sonata (even though I chose her when making the appointment). I was frustrated and left. I quickly got a call from Jennifer (the owner) who apologized for the confusion and offered an appointment with herself the next day, Monday morning. Honestly, Jennifer would have been my first choice based on the bios, but she hadn't been working on Sunday. I came back the next day. Jennifer did a great job and was communicative, helpful, etc. The guy who washed my hair was very good as well. I see there are some reviews saying it's a hectic vibe and complain that the same stylist didn't do everything (consult, wash, dry, cut, etc.). But in my experience that's normal in NYC salons, even the most expensive ones in Midtown/Downtown. They are busy places and the stylists normally consult, cut and finish, but an assistant or junior stylist does the wash and often part of the dry. read more

I just had the most rushed, chaotic, non- lux yet lux pricing haircut ever here. To start- the only redeeming quality is that the look of my cut and blowout looks fine. Hence the 2 star. Everything else to get there is was mayhem. Why? 1. When I walked in, no one knew who was supposed to be helping me. Employees were frantically moving about the shop, shouting, and rushing to and from. 2. They had separate people for washing stations versus the stylist you made the appointment with. Oh and those two separate people expect tips. 3. The washers had no clue how to detangle/handle my naturally curly hair 4. Once I finally got to my stylist chair, she rushed her way through my cut and blowout so much so that my hair was getting badly tangled while blow drying. I wanted to like this place badly because it's so close to home and I just relocated from Chicago. I will find a spot in midtown for a nicer experience next time. read more

I reviewed the website. I made an appointment and received an email and text confirmation of my appointment for a cut and color with Marcos. I never met him. When I arrived, I was told my appointment was with Jennifer. When I said my appointment was with Marcos, I was told Jennifer would color and Marcos would cut. No one welcomed me or introduced themselves. I was shuffled around by three different people until Jennifer came over and told me she was the owner and a "specialist" in "my kind of hair." After I told her what I wanted and that I did not like my current cut, she proceeded to do a dry cut of exactly what I had and also tell me I am a "slave" to my dark hair color. After a poor recut of what I already had, another staffer came over to color my hair excruciatingly slowly. When he rinsed it out, I was sprayed with water. Walking back to the styling area, the unsecured towel he had placed on my shoulders fell on the floor and he would have put it back on my shoulders if I hadn't stopped him. The floor is filthy BTW.Next he started to dry my hair with no product to protect it until I asked him. I have fine, short hair that dries in less than 10 minutes. Jennifer reappeared and said she would dry the front (that was already dry) while her assistant dried the back. Then she left again. I am not naming her assistant because I felt sorry for him. I stopped the process, paid and left. RUN away from this salon. Absolutely terrible. read more

Booked a deva cut with Jennifer. I have multiple types of hair with very curly underneath and straighter on top. I have had curly hair cuts before moving to NY but never deva cuts. I have never had a stylist brush out all the curls while doing the dry cut. They would cut to the texture/curl pattern of my hair. Never had a deva cut so that might be the process. Previous cuts had dry cut, hair wash, drying, cutting again to make sure everything laid correctly. The salon was busy because of the holiday. I agree with other posters of chaotic environment. I had 5 people work on my hair: Jennifer, a hair washer, a person who put product in my hair, a person who started drying my hair, and a person who finished drying my hair. Jennifer did come back over for less than a minute at the end. Again, never had a deva cut but other curly cuts, the stylist will cut again if needed. The haircut isn't the best or the worst. My mistake, I did not come in with an inspo picture. I wanted a curly cut with layering so it wasn't poofy. It seems to be more of a blunt cut. I have few layers but two big chunks of my hair in front. This hair is straighter and should have been cut differently. They kept trying to twist the front hair back, but without as much curl pattern, it wasn't going to work. Overall, the hair doesn't lay nicely. I did appreciate Jennifer talking to me about hair care. She didn't try to upsell on any products but made some recommendations for easy maintenance. She said I could maintain with 1 product but then the salon ended up using 4-5 products. It would have been nice to see my hair with only the 1 recommended product. I was hoping for more of a polished cut but will need to go with half up, half down or braids until I can fly back to my previous stylist. read more

Update: they were able to redo my hair for free with the hair stylist I originally booked! She did a wonderful job and was super thoughtful and thorough! Thank you Sonada! I don't usually post reviews but I thought I might for salon. This is my second time coming here, but probably my last. I came in with really blonde damaged hair looking to get a reverse balayage, a single process root color that would blend into the blonde. I had an appointment with Sonada at 1:30, I was seated at 1:35 but didn't actually get started with my hair stylist till 1:50/55. I made the appointment for Sonada because her bio said she had a lot of experience so I thought you could do my hair well, but I was given another stylist named Angie. Angie was super sweet and walked me through what she would do with my hair but she did not understand entirely what I was asking for. I showed her pictures for inspo but the end result was not really what I wanted. Instead of doing the reverse balayage she just did an inch of uniform "root coverage" and the a toner. My roots are very orange instead of actually brown like I wanted like the picture, the color doesn't extend down past more than an inch like I asked, and my ends are kinda grey, but my hair feels GREAT super soft and she was transparent about price as she was working. I think Angie was really kind and tried her best, my problem is not with her but the salon itself. I made an appointment with Sonada on purpose for her experience, and then to be given to someone else was frustrating; I saw her working on someone else. I think their problem is they are overbooking their stylists; it was so busy there, everyone was running around, and it was like this the last time I went too. Also they charge $45 for blow dry, so you won't be able to see how your hair looks in the salon. I wanted a refund or for her to redo the roots but felt like it was a lost cause. I wasn't sure about leaving this review because I really don't like to leave less than positive reviews if I can help it, but maybe if I had known this myself I would've chosen differently. I currently have tape in extensions (placed elsewhere) and I called about getting them taken out and moved up/reinstalled. When I first called on the phone to get a sense of price, the person on the line wasn't really sure what I was asking for and then quoted me around 100/150 dollars but stated they weren't sure exactly. I said this sounded fine so I scheduled an appointment. The woman doing my hair (I forget her name) was super friendly, I don't have any problem with her attitude or anything. She seemed decently knowledgeable about these types of extensions so I thought it would be fine. The appointment itself went pretty smoothly. I indicated I had an event so I asked that they also blow out my hair (and extensions) into curls. The first problem I had was that when I went to check out, the price was around 320. I wish they had been more upfront about this and there wasn't much I could do at that point so I just checked out. Also, in the time it took me to walk from the salon to the subway, my hair fell completely flat and I had to re do my curls myself. The real problems came later on. I had indicated that I wanted the extensions placed so that I could easily put them up into a ponytail. Unfortunately, the angle they were placed at made this pretty difficult and I started having issues with the pieces near my face getting a little loose. The biggest problem came when I went to get my extensions taken out and reinstalled again at another salon. My stylist showed me how the tape had been placed poorly and how this caused the adhesive to stick too much to my hair and thus the removal was very painful and caused a lot of my natural hair to get pulled in the processes. Horrible. Just horrible. I asked the stylist multiple times for a tiny trim. I explicitly stated I DID NOT want a full cut. I am required to keep my hair a certain length for work and reiterated this so many times to the stylist (even showing pictures for length) to the point that I thought I was being over the top. Never in a million years did I think she would not only completely ignore me, but cut off more than you're normally supposed to cut off for a regular cut. For a regular cut, AT MOST you should be cutting off two inches. She cut off over 6 inches of hair. I actually measure it when I got home. OVER 6 INCHES. That's INSANE. I've never had a hair stylist cut off that much hair in one sitting in my entire life. I think the reason this is really bothering me is because it felt like it had to be intentional. I've never felt this way before after leaving a salon. I would love to show a before and after picture, but I would prefer to keep this anonymous. She also cut my hair dry (which I thought was bizarre) and was rushing, which made me nervous as well. Fortunately, my hair is growing back slowly, but I will NEVER EVER go to this salon again. You could not pay me to go here. This is a warning to the person reading this who wants a tiny trim. Go to another salon. read more

Great great experience. My first time booking a last minute appt for a wash and blow and they took my right in. I was scheduled with Fabiana and boy she really took her time to explain options beyond a wash and blow. Long story short, I learned about extensions, had consultation for color matching and purchase, got them in within 3 weeks time and I haven't turned back since. Fabi is professional, accommodating, and on time with everything. The salon is full of pleasant staff. Daveena whom I never worked directly with has been such a doll everytime professional attentive anytime I arrived. Liz who washed my hair weekly goes the extra mile to scrub wash massage and beyond lovely. And Jen the boss runs such a tight ship, offers water snacks for having to wait even just 2 minutes. well, wow. i'm not sure i've ever gotten this kind of treatment from a salon before. i did a gray transition and cut, a complicated procedure that took around three hours and for which i was charged a reasonable price. looked wonderful, everyone in my orbit agreed. jennifer told me to come back next week so she could take a look--then wound up trimming my hair even more and doing more toning on it so it's like i got a whole second treatment for free. plus she gave me a free tube of leave in conditioner. this is the first time i'd gone to salon west and i will for sure me returning. my only tiny, tiny issue was that the first person to rinse my hair said he didn't want to make the water hot and that hot water isn't good for hair. i don't accept that and i don't want to switch to a cold water rinse when i take showers! but that's a very small point to make; in general, i was more than happy. recommend this place. read more

Just had an amazing haircut here with Marcos! It was such a nice experience. I came in with waist length super damaged hair because I absolutely hate getting hair cuts. He was so warm, friendly and knowledgeable that I immediately felt at ease. He knew exactly what to do and the resulting layered, much shorter cut I left with is perfect. If I could rate them lower, I would. I should report them to the Better Business Bureau as they have shady business practices. My daughter went there this morning and they pawned her off on someone she did not have an appointment with. And when she questioned them, they ignored her. They did exactly the same thing to a good friend of mine. I would understand if they were walk-ins, but there were not. They had set appointments. This is a horrible way to do business, I would never treat my customers in that fashion. If you are reading this review and are unsure, I STRONGLY encourage you to go elsewhere. There are plenty of other options; there is no need for you to be treated in this fashion. EDITED - JUNE 3 After my review on May 13th, the owner reached out to me and offered to give me a free service. I would NEVER use them, even for free.
