INSANELY EXPENSIVE FOR NO REASON. $45 for Men's Haircut is just insane. My bf has been frequenting this place due to proximity to our place and I never bothered to ask since he always looks the same before and after, just sharper, u know how men are with short clean haircuts.... today he told me that he paid $50 with tip for his hair cut and I freaked! The worst part is apparently last month it was $40 but today she decided to charge $5 more. Worst pricing for mediocre service. I've been going to Salon 66(formerly on 72nd St.) for over 25 years. Haydee, the owner, is the only person who has been able to tame my wild hair. Her salon is immaculate and the vibe is welcoming and low-key. Her prices are posted as you enter the shop and I've never overheard any complaints. While my wife goes to another Salon. she finds Salon 66 prices equal to or a little less than others in the area. read more

Caution: this salon is incredibly devious about their charges! I decided to get my bangs trimmed since I was killing time while waiting for a friend. The sign at the front counter advertised bang trims for $8. Even though the interior was dated and lacked the modern "wow" factor as other salons, I thought I'd give it a try, especially since the price seemed reasonable. The bang trim was so elementary. Other salons try to texture my bangs or thin the hair. The stylist cut only a straight horizontal line--something I could've done on my own or had a friend do. The stylist seemed kind of distracted, so I feared asking for anything more technical. When I went to the counter to pay, I was rung up for $26! I immediately spoke up as the sign advertised bang trims for $8. The woman told me that it wasn't only a bang trim; she had apparently seen the stylist do some "face-framing" cuts. By this, she meant that the stylist had trimmed a piece of hair that was next to my bangs...!? (And which I would argue is actually part of my bangs!) That's right: if the stylist cuts any piece of hair that doesn't fall into their definition of "bangs," it's an immediate price increase of $18! Even if it's only one piece of hair! Again, no technical cuts, no styling, no use of any hair products. Just the most basic, crappy bang trim for a $26 charge. read more

I had to wait 3 days to even write this review. My blood was boiling so furiously up to this point and I want to give just the facts since this is Salon 66's first review. I'm trying to be fair. I went in for a hair appointment last Thursday evening at Salon 66. I had not had my hair worked on there before, but they sell the shampoo I like so I had been in the joint and thought everything checked out OK. I was excited to get warm highlights put in my naturally dark brown hair and get a trim. I am a former bleach addict, and was blonde for about 10 years. For about the last 2, I've been rocking the au naturale look and taking really good care of my hair. No dyes, no bleaching, and regular Keratin treatments. I walked into Salon 66 with nice well kept hair, and left in uncontrollable tears feeling utterly taken advantage of. I could go on for 5,000 words about what all went wrong, but I'll try to keep it short and simple. I asked for natural warm highlights to not deviate from my regular look too vastly, but to keep it fresh. I said I'd be open to lighter bits around the face, and also wanted a trim. What I got was a monstrosity of orange and green hued bleachy streaks that looked painted on and turned the whole effect of my hair into what my sister affectionately called a "goat $hit" look. And as for the trim- hacking off 3 inch sections has never equated with a trim in my terms. I broke into tears after the shampoo bowl, and multiple times through my hair dresser Antonia's (approximate- he's male, grey hair, Italian) stylings. That being said, I always stayed professional and said "if you think it will look different when it dries, fine, we'll check it then" and kept my cool. So, the color turned out disastrous, he took off too much with the cut (but was not the worst part of the experience). The proprietor looked at me bewildered as I got up to pay and tried to talk about solutions on how we could fix my hair. At this point, Antionia got very defensive and started to yell at me about how this was exactly what I asked for. I explained, no, I asked for natural highlights, and what I got is what looks like a terrible dye job. I also said, "I go to a hairdresser because you guys are artists, you do this everyday and will know more about hair then me". His response, "I am no artist, if I were an artist I'd be out there doing art". So, here's the kicker, it looks AWUL, I'm in tears, he's screaming at me, the owner seems terrified of him, and as I pull out the plastic, he barks, it's $200 for the highlights & $55 for the cut. These are very reasonable prices for New York, but when I called, they told me $160 & $35. First, I think if the price they want to charge is different than what they quoted, they should have mentioned that early on, and second, I was about to have to go to a reputable salon to have the mess fixed which would run me much higher. In my opinion, after everything, they should not have charged me AT ALL for the botched highlights and I would have paid the $55 for the cut. To fix it, my sister dyed my hair back the next night. I spent the day with the highlights, but every time I saw them I regretted turning my healthy well maintained hair into a mess. If you're looking for a place that is professional and consistent, Salon 66 is not it. They handled the entire situation terribly. They had the ability to fix the situation, and instead were more interested in having me pay and get out. I've done enough wacky stuff to my hair to know it doesn't always turn out exactly how you pictured and I always manage expectations. But when it turns out n a way where no person can say it look sOK, you've got to fix it. Actually, reliving this is making my blood boil again, so I won't go into more details. Being new to NYC, I was very apprehensive about trusting anyone with my hair. I know prices are higher here and I understand that, but I wanted to LIKE what I paid for. I decided to try Salon 66 because it was close to where I live. I was very pleased with the service that was rendered there. Haydee was friendly; but most of all, listened to what I wanted. I've gone to Salon 66 many times and have never had a bad experience. Salon owner Haydee, who is soft-spoken, is an expert hair stylist, who has tinted and permed my hair. I know she does her best to have experienced professional hairstylists work at Salon 66 -- because I always ask about new people who work at the salon. When someone's work and interpersonal skills prove unsatisfactory, she lets them go. During a recent visit, I asked about the previous reviewer's comments. The good news is the hairdresser in question is no longer working at Salon 66. I don't know all the details but I am told the former affiliate spent a lot of time working with the client to accommodate requested changes -- to no avail. He expected to be compensated for the time he spent with the client. There is a printed rate card for services so there should be no question about the price charged for each service; additional services would cost more. I would encourage prospective clients to make an appointment with Salon 66's Haydee or Maria. They do a terrific job of hairstyling, coloring, perming, and even Brazilian blowout if you hair is the type that gets too curly. They are very nice, professional, and accommodating. I live in the 72nd St Area in the West Side and after trying several places along Columbus Ave in the area, I found Salon 66 to be the most professional. I'm very satisfied with the results. I can really recommend this place. You do need an appointment if you don't want to waste any time waiting. read more

Very disappointed. No price list visible in sight. Hairdresser quoted one price, she then cut my hair. But when I needed a blow dry and styling, she asked for another $40. Very dishonest! I have been in the area for 20 years at different salons. This one is the worst and most overpriced. Cut and blow dry is $80, which is way more than most in the area. Decor and atmosphere of the place is not high end for this price. And the stylist came from a near by salon where cut is just $25. read more

Let me start by saying.... I should have read these reviews before going to this place!! Warning!!! before getting SHAMPOO confirm the prices, they will end up charging you an arm and a leg for something that can cost a fraction of the price. The reason why I made the trip all the way from the Rockaways to 66 street is because my stylist recently started working there. Unfortunately everything changed once I heard the price. When I got to the place I greeted my stylist, than we headed to the back to wash my hair and everything was normal until she told me the price... I normally pay for my hair cuts between $35 and $40 no more than that since I just trim the ends and blow dry. She said... I would like to let you know that the prices are higher in this location, I said... OK, how much more? she goes to the front and speaks with the receptionist, she comes back saying $65 for the hair cut and $55 for blow dry, Honestly at that point I wanted to get up and walk out... but I did not want to be rude. I told my hair stylist, why so expensive I normally pay $35.... she said, well you know it is the location. I said, I understand that they increase the prices but this is outrageous. At that point my hair stylist speaks with the owner, the owner stuck to her guns and did not want to give me a deal. I got up and was ready to walk out when the owner says... so, are you going to pay for the shampoo, I looked at her and said, NO!!! because I did not know this was going to cost so much... if I would have known I would have never made the trip. She started saying, well you know the rents around here are higher... I felt like saying. Does that mean I have to pay for your rent... but again, I did not want to sound rude. Honestly, the owner of this place does not know how to treat her customers and has no training in customer service. She should know the well known saying.. "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT" If they continue conducting business this way I don't see them lasting long. For a few years now I've been going to International Hair cutters which it was located at the same address where salon 66 is now located and where i met my hair stylist...International Hair cutters are now at 66 and Amsterdam... So I decided to go back there and get my hair cut, not only I got a great hair cut but they charge me what I had paid in the past $35. I am a very smart consumer and before I pay a dime I negotiate prices, that is why it took me by surprise when this happen today 10/2/2014. This place is very sneaky about their pricing and haircuts are very basic. I went in for a haircut and was quoted $65 which I was fine with. The hairdresser cut my hair and asked if I wanted to blow dry my hair and naturally I said yes (because what hair salon will only cut and not dry your hair, right?). Well, I go to pay and they charged me $55 extra on top of the $65 because they claimed I did a full on blowout. I was upset because I was not told of this extra charge and would never have agreed to this had they told me I'd be doing a full blowout on top of my haircut. Be very careful if you decide to go here as you'll probably get charged way more than you expect. read more

The owner of Salon 66, Haydee, is a wonderful person and, as the previous poster wrote, "an expert hair stylist." No nonsense. No frills. Dignified and trustworthy. Haydee has cut my hair for decades, going back to her stint as a hair stylist on 72nd St, and she gave my son his first haircut! She now has opened Salon 66--again no frills but top-notch work, customized to your hair style and preferences. Needless to say, rents are high, but her prices are moderate and I travel up from the Village for my monthly cut. read more
