Had my BMW for 2 years and I was taking my car to this place for repairs. The father is cool and knows his stuff, I have a good rapport with him. But the son Mark is unprofessional, crass, rude, and disrespectful. His customer service is horrible, no customer etiquette at all. I have been here several times while the son has mental psychotic episodes and starts yelling at his father for no reason. Last time I came to do an oil change, he starts yelling at his dad because my car was taken in before another customer, mind you I was the first customer there. Another time I brought my car in for repairs there he starts yelling to his dad "get this car out of here!" Made his workers lie to me about the issue I had with my car - his worker told me not to worry about the issue with my car when the suspension needed repairs. Had my car sitting there for a whole week and did nothing to it because he didn't want my car there for whatever reason I have no clue. I had to call several times for an update on the repairs and didn't get a response. I have spent thousands here (BMW is not cheap) in the last 2 years for subpar service at this place because the son wants to be a spoiled brat instead of running a business. It's other BMW repairs shops yours isn't the only one. I work in the auto insurance business and I will never refer this place. read more

Back in February, I was at a crossroad: do I buy a new car (a luxury if you live in NYC, or bite the bullet and pay to have my 2002 BMW X5 completely tuned up (which it needed badly - more than 125k miles!)? After consulting a dealership service manager, I was this close to calling Cars for Kids and begging them take my old car off my hands. Then I found L & M Foreign Cars on Yelp. Best search results EVER!! The owner Bill (who also still works in a well-known German car dealership service department) easily diagnosed most of my car's problems just from our phone conversation! Once I brought the car into the shop, he walked me through all the problem areas he diagnosed over the phone and proactively recommended a few other repairs to improve and maintain the car's performance. His son Michael also helps run the shop and is just as thorough as his father. In the end, I got a much better deal going w/ L & M and their work is guaranteed for a year. I found this shop on Yelp and was impressed with all of the positive reviews, but I had a pretty bad experience. I'm an avid BMW lover, and just moved back to NYC from California where I got my first 1988 E30 that I loved and cared for even though it was a problem-ridden rust bucket. I upgraded to a E39 wagon that I currently love and care for, even though its 15 years old and has its fair share of mysterious issues. One more thing to mention, I'm a smart, mechanically inclined female who looks about 10 years younger/more inexperienced than I actually am. I've owned and worked on motorcycles for years, and am very familiar with what it takes to be a good mechanic. First insult: I have a detailed record of maintenance for my car that my previous mechanic took into account when I first brought my car to them. It helps to know what kind of issues your car has had in the past when bringing it to a new shop to diagnose a new problem. These guys couldn't care less about any past records, and insulted me further by saying "How can your car be in this shape with all of these detailed maintenance records." Gee, I don't know, thats why I'm bringing it to you. Second insult: My car, because of a mysterious electrical issue, was operating in fail safe mode. This means the car locks into third gear, stays there, and shuts down most of its operating functions to save itself from failure. The mechanic actually used a bicycle metaphor to explain gears to me, as though I had never heard of a gear before. Super insulting. At least treat me like an adult when you're explaining something to me. Third insult and deal breaker: After my car was in the shop for 24 hours, no diagnostics were run, they hadn't taken a look at it, and had no idea what the problem even could have been. This is inexcusable, especially since I called the day before I brought my car in to see if they had the time for me. So, I picked up my car and drove it to a different mechanic. On the way out, the guy yelled "You'll never find a better shop than us!" Well guess what, I did. Their name is Bimmer Motors Group and they're in Long Island City. They were great, treated me and my car with respect, and had a pretty good idea of what was going on as soon as I started to describe the problems. They repaired it with grace and my car is running PERFECTLY now. In short: If you love your car and want to build a relationship with a mechanic that loves it too, don't bother with these guys. Further, if you're an intelligent woman who likes to be treated with respect regardless of how much you knows about cars, run away. read more

A new mechanic for a "new to me but quite old" car is always scary but the guys here are great. When I first brought my Volvo in, they lept in touch with me as they were doing the diagnostic on my car and gave me the opportunity to take it back to the previous mechanic that had screwed something up. I've been back twice since then, once for a fluid leak where Bill showed me how to check all the fluid levels for the future and then another time when some jerk smashed one of my front headlights. I didn't have a good experience at this place at all, expensive diagnostics test at $120 and they still couldn't properly diagnosis the car with issues that i know it had. Told me things were wrong with my car that weren't, very upsetting that they tried to rip me off. I fixed the car myself, they see a young person and all they see is $$$$, can't see why people praise these ripoff mechanics. I have a 08 BMW 535Xi. Car kept turning off with a "engine malfunction" & "fuel pump malfunction" message. After 15 min the car would turn on and run fine. The BMW dealership diagnosed the problem wrong 3 times. BMW had me replace high pressure fuel pump (warranty). Got the car back, same prob. BMW had me replace the low pressure fuel pump & low fuel pressure sensor ($1900) got the car back, same prob. I heard about L&M from a BMW forum and decided to give them a try. They fixed the car. Got it right the first time. Turned out to be the fuel pump module. This is NOT the place to come to if your penny pinching and on a budget. There fee just to look at the car was $120, there labor is $110 an hour and they only use dealer parts at least in my case anyway. But you get what you pay for in this world. There mechanics and owners really know there stuff! And they seem very passionate about there work. The thing I appreciated the most was 2 weeks before I even decided to actually bring them my car I called to ask a question and spoke to Mark, I was stunned out how much time he took to talk to me about my car. I wasn't even a customer yet and he's taking so much time to talk. Rarely will you find that in NYC. The other thing that blew me away was the follow up. The Dad, Billy and the son, Mark both called me to ask how the car was running. I thought 100% I must owe these guys money otherwise why would they be calling me lol. Fixed my complex problem in one try. Took them a few days. May be expensive to some people. I would recommend going here with your foreign car over anyone else in Brooklyn. I've learned that you can't have an average joe working on your way above average car. I'll def be back. read more

I have a 1973 VW Bus which means I don't have very many options when it comes to mechanics who know what they are doing. I've spent the last few years searching for one I could trust. And with L&M I've more than found what I was looking for. A few points -My bus runs better than it ever has, despite me trying varied mechanics. -I came in for electrical help, and the owner sat with me for 20 minutes for free, giving me tips on what to try on my own first, instead of just taking it and charging me for work. -They take the time to explain things in as simple a way as possible, even if you don't know cars. -They are outrageously straightforward and honest from the start. I've listened to them speak with many people in the office. Sometimes customers just want to be told a fix is cheap and easy. They are patient and honest when something is more complicated, and let the customer decide how to move forward. But they don't half ass things. An super honest, family owned business with integrity. I brought a used car I was considering purchasing here for a pre-purchase inspection. Michael and his father Billy went over the car top to bottom and identified a slew of issues that would need to be replaced and repaired (and what the car should be bought for given those costs). They told me cheaper places to get these repairs done if I wanted to move forward (rather than doing it at their shop). What was even more impressive is that Billy spent a long time talking with the two young men who came with me (relatives of the seller) encouraging their interest in fixing automobiles towards a trade in repairing cars. I signed up for an account just so I could give this family run father and son(s) establishment the props it deserves. I am by no means a car person and feel a warm glow simply by figuring out how to open the hood. So as you can imagine I am very wary of being ripped of or taken for a ride by a mechanic because everyone knows somebody who was victim to a dishonest mechanic I'm new to the city and found these guys by searching on yelp. I took my Audi A4 there because on an issue with the power steering. From the moment I walked in and greeted Michael and his father I felt like I came to the right place, and now that the work has been done- I'm still convinced of it. They were fast and even paid for my cab to the subway the day I brought it in! They were fairly priced and were very patient in explaining to me all the intricacies of the problem I was having and now I actually feel like I've grown a couple of chest hairs from that butch manly knowledge. It was a schlep for me to get over there from Hamilton Heights but it was well worth the trip and I will be going back the next time I need to (which i hope is not any time soon). 5 Stars easy. I've had a lingering check-engine light for more than a year that indicated a problem with the Catalytic Converter. I had taken it to 3 different mechanics, all of whom said "Oh, it's nothing, ignore it, it's too expensive to replace a cat" and cleared it out. A week or two later, it would click back on, and eventually my car started driving strangely. It just didn't rev like it used to. After reading the reviews on here, I took it to L&M, and they walked me through everything they were going to do to diagnose the actual problem. Turned out it was a leaking air boot, not the cat, they repaired it, and the check engine light hasn't returned and my car drives like my car again. Bottom line before I get into my long winded review, the guys here are awesome, especially Michael who I worked with. Go here if you want to get it done right without having to worry about getting ripped off or milked for your cash. They are not open on weekends, but it's worth taking time off during your work week to get it done, so don't let that stand in your way like it did for me in the past. It's excellent work for a fair price. They are super fair with the parts costs, labor costs are a bit more than a standard chain, but feel its fine to charge a bit more when you're the best (and I believe they are). I went to L&M for a very labor intensive overheating repair, and the costs came out being very reasonable. Definitely cheaper than if I went to a chain *cough* Strauss *cough*. Furthermore, you can tell that they were more concerned about doing a great job for you rather than getting your money. You'll see for yourself. Michael, his dad, and other staff were super friendly. They gave me detailed explanations of the entire process, possible issues, a walk through the garage, you name it. I'm not a car pro by any means, but they explained it to me in a way that was clear and instilled me with confidence. I got calls with any updates and possible costs as the work was being done. The repair was done by the next day in time for the weekend. And on my way out, I was shown the bad parts that were removed and given great advice on why the issue happened and how I can avoid it in the future. I am fortunate that I don't live too far from these guys, but they would have been worth the trip even if they were a good distance away. Highly suggested. So glad I discovered these guys. Had my 2010 GX460 Lexus side swiped. The damage wasn't huge, but because it covered multiple panels, the Lexus body shop quoted me an unreasonably high amount to fix the small dents and scratches. After walking out of there, I Googled shops who fix foreign cars and this was one of the first names that came up. I called them and made an appointment that same day, Bill was very helpful. After looking at my car, he quoted me an amount that was a third of what Lexus dealership wanted to charge me ($3,500-Lexus, $1,200 These guys). I was very happy with that amount and left my car there that same day. The next day, the car was fixed, as if brand new. Put simply, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who can do a better job, anywhere. These gentlemen are the absolute best at what they do. Their labor rate is in keeping with anyone who is actually competent to work on the types of cars that they specialize in and the level on personal detail and attention is unparalleled. Try taking your foreign car to a Manhattan dealership and see how much they will charge for a simple body job. My BMW stalled on me one morning after having a charging malfunction sign pop up. Turns out my last mechanic screwed me over with a bad oil job, brake job and my belt was chewed up as a result. Got towed to this shop with no notice to the mechanics and they took such good care of my baby. L and M was highly recommended to me by a family member, even though I have an American car (Saturn Ion). SO I gave it a shot. Not only did the son of the father/son team take the time to explain, in detail, what was and could be happening to my car, but went on to teach me preventative measures to keep the car from having further problems. He SCHOOLED me, I learned so much! And I was not condescended to for not knowing as much as I should about cars. These guys take their time with you, they ACTUALLY care! High quality! I needed new break pads and rotors, and the father ordered them on the spot and the parts arrived 20 minutes later. The $ is more than fair for the excellent service. I spent over $100 for a diagnostic test on my BMW. I was told that nothing was wrong with my car. That was great news, but since my BMW dealer said I probably had a head gasket leak and some other problems, I just wanted to make sure. So, the owner told me to go back the next day for another diagnostic test for free. In the meantime, I had him order two parts for my hood that cost about $35 each. I went the next day. He didn't feel the need to go through another diagnostic test. He just looked under my car. Then he installed the two parts that only had to be popped in (something I could have done myself). The next thing I know, I have to pay over $100 again for the cost of the parts and labor. Totally not worth it. read more

Good reviews for a reason. Took my car in for a scheduled maintenance which cost less than dealer prices even after factoring in addition of oil additive to counter low mileage. They have all the right diagnostic equipment and are very knowledgeable about German car issues and mechanics.
