Im really torn between 3 and 4 stars on this place. They had a good selection of beer, and the burger was good, but not as great as they boast it will be. I like selections! They only have 3 choices of cheese, and only a couple topping for the burger, and lacked my favorite topping of mushrooms. However, I did devour the burger, and the service was outstanding! I think they need more cider beers too! So all said and done I would absolutely recommend this place! read more

Not a lot of seating, so it's always full. Nothing Vegan except the fries. But the fries are good (cajun and bbq seasoning combination) and they have a lot of different beers on tap. read more

Found this place using Yelp when I was in Fargo (on business) a few months back. What a great find. I ate/drank here two days in a row. Pros: - Good beer selection - Friendly service - Amazing fresh cut chips - The cost of food is crazy cheap. Maybe that's normal for that area because it's a college town and Fargo is obviously not the big city. Cons - Small space and impossible to get a seat if it's crowded. I had the Humpty Dumpty and another burger (can't remember the name) and both were good. Very juicy and greasy (a good thing). But the burger was not mind blowing. Very similar to other burger joints. But for the price it's a steal. I couldn't get enough of the fresh cut chips. Seriously, they are that good. I would not hesitate to go back if I ever find myself back in Fargo. read more

JL Beers has a fantastic selection of beers on tap, and their burgers and fries are excellent. They do not serve any non-alcoholic drinks other than specialty root beer, and bottled water. Children are not allowed because it is considered a bar. I would visit much more regularly if you could get water for free. read more

I don't even like beer, but I was there with a friend who wanted one. The very sweet, recently college graduated bartender was determined to find one I liked. He asked me what sorts of flavors I like, in regular food and in booze. He brought some very interesting samples that IF I were a beer drinker, would have liked. I was travelling to Fargo from CA. Fell upon this joint by accident...no regrets. A VERY eclectic crowd and fine choice of beers. Their burgers are by far the best I have had in some time with their fresh cut potato chips w/sea salt were the BOMB! The bar is amazing, but the real find is the food. their menu is VERY small... basically just burgers with various toppings, fries and chips, but its all good. I had their Humpty Dumpty, which is a cheeseburger with a fried egg on top, which was an amazing experience. Went here after a RedHawks game with a couple of friends. Our waitress was very helpful and had plenty of suggestions right off the bat. The restaurant is small, but the size just lends itself to the casual and cozy atmosphere. The beer list is extensive with something for almost everyone. The only complaint I have is the lack of any options outside of beer for alcohol - it would be nice to order a drink outside of the beer menu. However, it's the burgers that have made JL a household name. And for good reason! I was skeptical going in - you never know how much praise is just hype. My fiance ordered the Humpty Dumpty with bacon and I the Rajun Cajun. Both burgers were good but the Cajun really blew us away! The burger was perfectly juicy (not overcooked which is often the case when ordering at many restaurants) and the seasonings just right - especially the cajun lime sauce offsetting the grilled onions. I was very impressed and would certainly return again. The homemade chips are also delicious and worth a try! read more

Fantastic beer and burger joint with great service and awesome prices! Lots of beers to choose from and same for the burgers, which you can also customize with cheap add ons. All of the JL Beers location are that same in that you can't go wrong! Every bartender has been awesomely friendly, helpful in choosing beers and burgers, and generous with beer samples and their time. Lots of decent beer options that they keep rotating for different selections. The burgers are a great price ~$5. Most recently I had The Classic and it might be my new favorite. It comes with your standard burger topping plus "special sauce" It actually reminded me of a A+ version of a Big Mac!! (I don't eat McDonalds anymore, barf). They also have fresh cut fries and chips that are ahhhmazing. I would definitely recommend trying some of the loaded options, especially if you like spicy. JL Beers is a fantastic, original gem for the Fargo/Moorhead food scene. The bottom line is that this place offers very affordable and tasty burgers, and has a pretty terrific beer selection to compliment the food. There are some downsides, but all of the food is made fresh right in front of you, and it's super quick. I often get takeout from either the downtown location (where I live) or from the Moorhead location (when I run errands). The menu offers standard fare for burgers, with nothing unique or over-the-top. Instead, each burger is made to order, and tastes/looks/feels like the real deal on fresh buns. The food is made quick, and I don't think I've ever waited more than 15 minutes for an order to arrive. The service is usually friendly and accommodating. There are some downsides/negatives though. First, I would avoid the fries altogether. I've never ordered them and been satisfied. There are plenty of good reasons why fresh cut fries don't work out as well, but the main point is that they are usually soggy, undercooked. The fresh cut chips though, now that's a whole different story--always order the chips. Every JL location is small, with most of the seating at the bar. It's always full, and there is almost always a wait. You're probably going to get really cozy with a total stranger. They pride themselves on this, and I actually commend them on it. It's very Fargo-esque. It does put a damper on larger group outings, and it's the opposite of intimate. One of my biggest pet-peeves about the JL experience is that they don't serve water. Well, they serve water, but only the kind that comes in a bottle from Pepsi Co. (or some other company) and costs you buck or more. There are no other beverage options for those of us that avoid soda, don't want beer, or never drink heavily sugared drinks (Brisk ice tea from a can, for example). I would happily pay for an overpriced, brewed ice tea that has no sugar. This being the midwest (sort of), I would expect it, but no-go at JL. The final gripe applies only to the downtown location because I often walk down to JL to treat myself to takeout after a long, busy week at work. They screw up my order about half the time. I've walked down to JL's to grab food to-go. Then, I walked all the way home (mind you ND winter), only to discover that they gave me the complete wrong order. Sometimes I think it's due to negligence and others because they could not hear my order because it is loud when busy. The Moorhead location has never disappointed on this front. Bottom line: Great, affordable and local food joint. The gripes are not flaws that should deter you from taking in the overall experience. Rather, I write about the gripes here to give others fair warning. Also, I think with some minor changes JL could replace most other "fast" burger style places across the country. It's hella better than In-n-Out. It's more interesting than 5-guys or Smashburger. Within the class of restaurant/bar that JL is a part of, it's the top of its game--local or not. The staff can be engaging and friendly if you have questions but will also leave you alone if you are there to converse with a friend.
