I guess my first thing would be not to order a chicken sandwich at a burger place. The Nashville hot chicken was absolutely terrible. It is not a fried piece of chicken, but a smashed chicken patty that I think might've been made out of ground chicken, but I am not certain. it was paper thin and the sauce was just poured on top of it. Ate here last night for the first and last time. So many problems, where do I start. The menu and the server made it sound like fries were included with the burger, they were not, so we found out when we received our bill. Ridiculous! Word your menu correctly!! Our server was the worst! He never came back to our table after we got our food, until he brought the ridiculously high bill. Food not prepared correctly and no one seemed to care. I practically had to stand up on the table and scream to get someone to get us more drinks. Food tasted good, but that is the only good thing I can say that was good. Extremely disappointing!! Tried this burger place as our favorite in Sioux Falls didn't open until 3:00. I appreciated that they had a walnut burger along with numerous beef burgers. It was a nice change from the usual black bean burgers that are the usual fall back at burger restaurants, but it was a bit greasy. My husband's creole burger was good but not terribly spicy. Great dive bar style burgers. MUST GET THE CHIPS with any sort of flavoring on them. The beers were also pretty decent and our service was outstanding! We tried a handful of beers, each, before finding one that we wanted to have a full glass of. The server was determined to help us find something we really enjoyed with a great attitude! The prices were good as well. After telling some locals we went here for dinner they also recommended the pretzels! They had a great mix of music on and a decent atmosphere for a Friday night with a group. I also liked being able to see in to the brew room near the back. Usually food along a road trip has a lot left to be desired, so I was ecstatic when our walnut burgers were packed with flavor and not over salted! We also ordered the coleslaw which was sweet and delicious. Best part of this experience is that the kitchen got our food out in 5 minutes. Im from out of town and had gotten a recommendation for the burgers here from an online forum. We usually prefer breweries or distilleries but not much here is open before 3 or 4 so we thought we'd try this place out for lunch and boy are we glad we did! The burgers are smash style with lots of unique topping combinations. I had the beer cheese and bacon burger and ommmmggg. The bacon was perfectly squishy, the beer cheese was delicious but didn't run or get messy. The fries or chips are made right in front of you - they have a machine where they put in the whole potato and push a button and it makes the chips or the french fries. They have all sorts of seasonings for these also. I got the Parmesan garlic and it was amazing. They have a great beer selection, most being regional... I wish they had more local stuff, as they only had one local Sioux Falls beer on. The staff was incredibly friendly and chatted with us. It's an amazing stop! The burger was just fantastic. I normally wouldn't go into a place that stakes their reputation on libations, but my coworkers wanted to go their for lunch, and I only went because they had a vegetarian burger that I could eat. Burger was actually nice! The ambiance was not overpowering and we could have a decent conversation without having to shout at each other. We visited from out of town per a family member's recommendation. We ordered to go as we just had gotten into town, but also because we figured in door dinning was closed. Wrong -- when we picked up our food there were a ton of people inside, including at the bar, and the only people wearing masks were the hostess, waiters, and bartender. I felt so bad for the workers, it was insane how busy they were on a cold December night during a pandemic. The food was okay -- it was on the pricey side and I had to customize my cheeseburger to get lettuce and tomato, paying for both add ons. The fries were a bit stale. We did enjoy the pretzel and beer cheese, but for $36 for 3 people I expected better. read more

I have never experienced such rude management. We came in with a party of 8, was told to wait at a 3 top and stand in the corner. We obliged. Then, not 5 minutes later we got kicked out from the 3 top so they could seat later customers. We proceeded to wait an extra 10 minutes before being seated in a shitty booth that didn't fit our whole table. When my husband approached the manager about the poor serve we received after being told to stand at the 3 top, he said "I'm the manager and if you want to give more attitude you can get the fuck out." Safe to say we left and won't be back. I've never experienced this before and was appalled at how rude the manager was. I love JL Beers burgers. The buns are soft and fresh, which I love. I don't love a grilled bun with crispy edges, which is what a lot of places do. To me, JL Beers get theirs perfect and just the right amount of meat and toppings on the burger so you can actually eat it. There are so many tasty options as well. I love the one with the egg on it, and my hubby always gets the one with bacon on it. (Phillips Avenue/Western Avenue burger). The fresh cut fries and tasty craft beer really make the meal special. My only complaint is the tiny dining area in these restaurants, as I feel they could do better with the seating. It is part of their shtick, I know, but it is sometimes annoying. Service is always great. I do miss the beer mail. They used to give you a postcard to send a note to a loved one. I would get little love notes from my husband when he had lunch there. There's a lot that goes into a great burger. It's not just quality ingredients, a patty that's cooked to perfection, appropriately prepped toppings in the right quantities (too much of a good thing can be a bad thing), carefully crafted condiments.. and almost as important as the rest - the assembly. Being from out of town and in Sioux Falls for work, I stumbled on this place due to a combination of location and time. As I rushed out of my hotel, I called in an order 9 minutes before the kitchen closed, and ordered the JL burger and fresh cut fries with a side of "Best Beer Cheese Dip Ever" and ghost pepper sauce. 10 minutes later I walked in the door, sat at the bar and was greeted with a plate that was nothing short of perfection. The JL burger, had "grilled onions piled high, cheese, special sauce and two hamburger patties" that were a perfect medium rare. Everything stayed nicely contained throughout - quite a feat for a double burger. The beer cheese sauce was true to its description, and the fresh cut fries were perfectly salted, reminding me as O looked at the the plethora of taps, that I would soon need a crisp IPA to wash it down. The beer selection is phenomenal - the menu divides into sections - from malty & roasty, fruit & spice to Hoppy, Saison & Farmhouse, tart & funky, wheat, light & crisp to cider & mead and Hard Seltzer - they had a bit of everything. This is a bar that serves burgers. Since I don't eat red meat, I went for the chicken sandwhich where the bun was literally 3x larger than the piece of chicken. Is was just ordinary. My three girlfriends from work and I ate at the downtown JL BEERS on Jan 4. 2022. We had a super kind waiter named JORDAN too. He was awesome. We spent 2 hours in their tiny restaurant. Besides our wonderful customer service, the burgers my friends ordered, they said were tasty... Mine, not so much. I ordered the Smokey the Beer Cheeseburger with dill pickle French fries. You MUST order these!!!! The seasoning was spot on and the quantity of fries was enormous. The taste was amazingly fresh and tasty. The burger....it was cumbersome to get your hands around it to hold. The beer cheese burger was a mess to be honest. And the bun that was used wasn't a good texture and it was weirdly awkward on the burger itself. After I got rid of the top half of the bun, it was a lot easier to eat the sloppiness of the burger. I wasn't a fan of this particular burger. I would have given this location 5 Stars but I am an ice cold [with lots of ice cubes] water with a lemon snob!!!! And I got my City tap water served semi cold with a tiny lemon slice and absolutely zero ice anywhere in the entire joint. The reasoning behind the "no ice" policy is really ridiculous too. We were told it was because they only serve beer so no need to offer ice. Seriously??? Such a weird and wonky rule to have...so I felt compelled to order an unsweetened ice tea.
